Carey Mulligan in Alexander McQueen at the Inside Llewyn Davis Premiere

Posted on September 30, 2013

Why so serious, Carey?

Carey Mulligan attends the US premiere of “Inside Llewyn Davis” during the 2013 New York Film Festival in an Alexander McQueen dress paired with Lanvin shoes.

Ironically, when you mentally break this ultra-serious look down, you can see that the dress is pretty much a party girl dress. It’s just that she paired it with serious shoes and downright Puritan hair. This is a dress that needs gold sandals, a strong lip and a blowout to work.

We miss this Carey. Amish Carey is boring.

    God, that is bad.

You know, without the collar, this would look a lot like a Victoria Beckham dress.

  • I don’t think she is serious, I think that is her “sucking in my stomach” face.

    • andreawey

what stomach? I know I shouldn’t say it but it looks like she hasn’t eaten in a month….

  • Erica_Vuitton

Whyyyyyy does she always do that with her face?!?!?! That sour puss mousey nonsense? The dress is very cute, I actually like the choker-esq neckline. Wish she had thrown on a bracelet.

    • SouthernGirlRena

Her closed mouth smile looks like she just got braces but her mom is making her smile for the Christmas photo. Her genuine, teeth-showing smile is adorable and makes me want to smile back at her.

      • Erica_Vuitton

Reminds me of that old Olsen twins story about how they always say “prune” when they are about to have their pic taken to get that weird half smile half duck lips pout.

        • demidaemon

        • Little_Olive

I always thought they said “dude”

          • mhleta

I thought they had just eaten prunes.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

Amish Carey wants a sandwich, that’s why.

    • mightbewrong

I know, I don’t want to criticize a girl for her natural expression or something, but her natural smile’s right up there, and it’s adorable. But instead she chooses to always look tense, like she’s grinding her teeth.

    • ellisd123

I think that it’s her “I’m trying not to laugh” face.

  • porcupie

The hairstyle is awful, but I love that hair colour; it really suits her.

    • Alice

I disagree–I think the hair color makes her look perfectly ordinary. She doesn’t look at all celebrity-like with it.

    • gabbilevy

Agree. I love that coppery brown on her. Too many blondes.

  • PlethoraofBooks

But.. but.. Amish Carey with sparkles!!!

Alright, fine, I can admit she needs to amp it up several notches. But she still has some sparkle at least…

  • Chuck Barthelme

I really think it’s mostly the hair that kills the look. The shoes are boring, but wouldn’t have been as noticeable if the rest of the look was working.

    • Rhonda Shore

Very few people on earth look good w/a straight-down-the-middle part. A strong lip and different hair would have made all the difference.

  • Garcia Loca

I actually kinda love Amish Carey.

    • nowlo

She always brings a slight primness to everything she wears. I like it. It’s kind of refreshing given how exhibitionism is the new norm on the red carpet.

    • bellafigura1

I’m with you. I think she looks elegant and sexy.

  • sagecreek

I like everything from the neck down, but yeah, makeup and hair could have really jazzed this up.

  • Jessica Freeman

This could have been a fun dress, she, is making to Too Serious.

    • Little_Olive

It’s mainly that the bottom part is too big and long IMO. It called for some sass. Just a bit, it’s still Carey.

  • mshesterp

The styling completing distracts from the rest of the dress–if it IS cute, I can’t tell. She’s making it look all mumsy. And why does she have a dead animal on her head?? Is it just me, or has she been looking like such a bummer post-marriage? Carey, you’re adorable and young and talented and all of that is supposed to be fun. So be FUN.

  • Orange Girl

She is NOT a brunette. She looks pretty, but ordinary. She’s striking as a blonde.

    • Fanny_Trollope

That hair color is washing her out. The makeup is not helping. That, combined with the sour expression, is making her look ill.

    • gracedarling

She looked pretty great in ‘An Education’ – I think she’s a natural brunette. I like it!

  • Sara__B

That may be the least flattering hair style, hair color, and makeup combination I’ve ever seen.

  • Danielle

    She looks so pissed.

  • SewingSiren

I think she looks very, very, pretty here. The neckline/jewels are a perfect frame for her extraordinary face. Paired with the cut outs the length is perfect. The shoes I could do without, so I’ll pretend like I didn’t see them.

  • MilaXX

She looks a little better in the one picture where she’s smiling, but please, give her a stronger lip, fix that hair and at least give her a pair of studs in those ear!

  • hughman

    Clurbing with the Bronte sisters.

    • filmcricket

  • Caitlin Rain

Discount Audreybot. The Audreybot knockoff you can get at Walmart for $39.99 next to their version of a Roomba. So sad.

    • Little_Olive

      “Discount Audreybot”. This!!
(Not that I’d enjoy the original’s customary ennui either).

  • Imasewsure

Needs to be full length to balance out that choker I think. Not used to the hair but I think this could have been saved with cool funky footwear!

  • kimmeister

She and Lily Collins clearly have the same ab workout.

  • Why so down, Holly Golightly?

(And why is she wearing a wig? Also, don’t tell me it’s not a wig. Carey Mulligan’s hair is scarily important to me.)

  • Karen Belgrad

The dress is giving her droopy uniboob.

  • B-L-U-S-H.

    *pretty please, miss Carey?*

  • KayEmWhy

I hope the hair color is for a movie role. She should have and bangs here or much softer hair.

  • Pennymac

Amish is too progressive for that hair. I’m thinking pentecostal holiness hair helmet.

  • Donna Tabor

I think she’s depressed about not having time to do anything with her hair.

  • KT

Totally agree. I think she still mostly looks cute, but those shoes were a horrible choice, and her head looks like it belongs with an entirely different ensemble. I miss fun and sparkly Carey too — that was a great look.

  • quiltrx

Why so pale and wan, Carey? Now THIS looks like a lady with a headache.
You’re wearing a divatastic McQueen dress, darling. Smile, put on some sparkly shoes and some more cheerful makeup, and have fun!

  • Sunraya

I like this hair color on her a lot! Her face looks great!

  • WHAT is happening on her head? The dress doesn’t feel like her and i hate the shoes.

  • GoAwayKardash

Love her as an actress but she’s never going to work for me as a fashion icon.

  • Kate Andrews

    I miss her blond hair!

  • Heather

When you can tell you’re wearing eyebrow pencil, you know it’s the wrong color.

  • Shawn EH

    Is Zosia Mamet’s style contagious?

  • Ashley Stacey

The saddest girl in a party dress.

  • Tatiana Luján

At first, I thought she was Emily Mortimer.

  • River

I normally think she’s lovely but everything about this is bad. Her makeup and hair make her look ill, and yes to TLo regarding the styling. I try not to make assumptions about bodies and health but I can’t help but think she looks not well here. Maybe it’s just bad lighting and too severe of a look?

  • Bakerlooline

It looks like Golda Meier’s old hair

    • Lattis

      this made me laugh 🙂

  • Kimberlini

She’s been a sad waif ever since she got married.

  • Lilithcat

I’m crazy in love with that collar.

  • Trisha26

    She’s all eyebrows.

  • crash1212

This is pretty which could’ve been elevated to fabulous with T&Lo’s suggestions. I do love her better as a brunette…hope she keeps that color.

  • MannahattaMamma

mostly she looks freezing cold & like she’s really really wanting to toss on a big ol’fuzzy cardigan

  • VicD

I rather like this, although, she does look a bit like a high school prom-goer trying to be grown up…

  • Qitkat

Is it only me? She reminds me sometimes of another beauty with slightly unconventional petite features, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Often seen in many different hairstyles, serious and somewhat uncomfortable until a natural beautiful smile breaks through.

    Beautiful dress.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

I actually think she looks very pretty with the brown hair. I brings more life to her face cause I always though the blonde washed her out. It’s the hair style, muted makeup, and school marm-y shoes that make this dour. She looks cute except the styling is all out of whack and I think the length of the skirt is too long.

  • nannypoo

I think she does this face thing deliberately so she won’t be caught with an unexpected facial expression, but could she possibly look worse than she does in the first picture? And is there a shortage of makeup where she lives?

  • Tatiana Luján

The prettiest I’ve seen her look was as Sally Sparrow in Blink . The honey-blonde of her hair in that Doctor Who episode was really flattering.

  • Cindy Claussen

Maybe she missed her teeth whitening appointment this week. 🙂

  • Jacquelyn

What the what?! This is really bad.

  • rkdgal

Yes, but her hair is a good color again for her complexion. That scores points with me.

  • H2olovngrl

Better hair styling, alone, would have helped this look tremendously.

  • vidacelina

    because she’s HUNGRY

  • A Shiny O’Connor

I feel like her bitchy ninja abs are judging me.

  • E. D.

The center part is not her friend.

  • PastryGoddess

I went to the hairdresser and all I go was this shitty dye job

  • ShaoLinKitten

Her hair looks like a wig.

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

Let’s see a smokey eye, guuuuuurlfriend!

  • Veronica1022

I was thinking Little House on the Prairie for the head, Rumspriga from neck to knees.

  • allcapsERINN

She looks my age. And I’m 40(ish). 🙁

  • stacey

New hair color requires a new make-up strategy. Also, isn’t she going to end up with some weird ass wrinkles if she keeps pursing her lips like that? Agree that the hair is blah.

  • pop_top

    That hair…NO.

  • mhleta

God, it’s like someone dug up Emily Dickinson, threw a dress on her and dragged her to Studio 54. She’s gorgeous, but she needs to get her game face sorted out before she hits the red carpet again. BTW, this girl could rock the shit out of a pixie cut.

Girl, This is Not your Dress or your Face or your Hair.

  • KG

    Must be the Mumford Effect.
