Benedict Cumberbatch at The Fifth Estate Premiere

Posted on September 06, 2013

If T Lo was more like the New York Stock Exchange, this would be our morning bell.

Benedict Cumberbatch attends the premiere of “The Fifth Estate” at the Toronto International Film festival.

Sausage Friday has officially begun.

Well he’s a tall glass of water on a hot day! However, I do wish his hair colour wasn’t so severe.

    • majorbedhead

I just wish he’d leave it Sherlock-curly. It looks so much better that way.

      • sweetestsith

I also prefer it curly, but this is MUCH MUCH better than the slicked back nonsense he was sporting for awhile. It looks groomed and compliments his features. Nicely done, I’m glad someone talked him into it.

      • rumcg66

I don’t like his Sherlock hair. It looks sort of juvenile to me. I love it shorter on the sides like this, although curly at the crown looks yummy too.

        • Tatiana Luján

I love the Sherlock hair on Sherlock, but I really like this hairdo or the one in the Star Trek movie.

          • rumcg66

Yes, it definitely suits the character.

      • WendyD

He just cut it for his next film role as Alan Turing.

    • Jessica Freeman

Is there also going on with some orange-y make-up around his mouth? Is it just my screen?

      • RussellH88

I see it. He looks a bit like he’s been eating Cheetos.

If he has, I’m very jealous because I love Cheetos.

        • Maybe he’s been kissing an Essex girl?

        • Getoverit

Looks like his cheeks have jaundice.

        • fursa_saida

I am deffo in the pro-Cheetos camp.

      • filmcricket

I’m seeing it too. Orange is the official TIFF colour, so it could be reflecting off of any number of things.

      • KateShouldBeWorking

On my screen it looks like the bruises I had from getting my wisdom teeth out.

    • WendyD

It’s colored dark when he’s playing Sherlock and he just finished filming the third series.

  • majorbedhead

Oh, this makes my Friday so much better. He’s lovely. C’mon, November, hurry up and get here!

  • amanda d

lovely way to start the day. thanks gentlemen!

  • MrsAtaxxia

How to I buy shares? That’s how this works right? We buy shares? And then like, I can trade some of my Cumby for some of someone else’s Tom Hardy? I may have failed econ.

    • What do I have to trade for more of Cumby and some Tom Hiddleston? I’m assuming Rufus Sewell shares are very expensive.

    • Jessica Freeman

At the Bitter Kitten Stock & Exchange Co., that is exactly how it would work.

      • Bethany NS

        Sign me up!

    • Domo_Konnichiwa

I’ll take whatever shares get sold. This is totally an awesome market!

    • I assume significant shares of Joe Manjello are in the “if you have to ask” price range, but if anyone is thinking about starting a mutual fund, I’m in. That is a recession-proof investment.

    • fursa_saida

The men I’d trade it for tend not to be featured–not, I think, due to any particular passing-over, just because they’re less famous and don’t dress in particularly interesting ways. So given that, Tom Hardy would definitely be my #1 buy. (I love Jeremy Renner, but he doesn’t tend to do well on the carpet. He’s much better in motion, so his TLo stock goes down.)

  • Got it in one, Mr Cumberbatch. Nicely presented.

    • He’s a little odd looking for my taste (which I understand is his appeal for other people), but I will say he looks perfect in this tux.

Edited to add: I don’t know what T+Lo’s rules are on this subject, but it’s hard to think of giving a man a WERQ! just for getting a tuxedo right. But I could be persuaded otherwise.

      • I’m not on the Cumberbatch love train, myself. Just giving an attaboy to someone who gets it right. As to a tux ever being WERQ worthy: I would say it would have to be something unusual in the way it was presented to make that a possibility. the tux is too much of a uniform otherwise. to warrant it.

        • Eclectic Mayhem

But we do see it done so badly so often! It’s refreshing to see it done right.

      • Sobaika

I’m not into him either but he really steams things up for a lot of people, doesn’t he?

  • Kate Andrews

    Glorious. Good morning!

  • VioletFem

This is the best his hair has looked in a non-Sherlock style.

  • Oh YUM!

  • Nancer

Yum! What a great way to start the day. Thank you!

  • dancho

I don’t see the attraction. He looks vaguely alien to me. As in, extra-terrestrial alien. *shrug*

  • Jacquelyn

Perfect way to start the day!

  • Mrs. Julien

Benedict Cumberbatch looks like the unholy lovechild of my mother and brother and it never stops FREAKING ME OUT!

    • Tatiana Luján

      That is so funny.

  • Chickadeep

  • Matthew Davie

That’s pretty much perfect. See boy-stars? It’s not that hard to wear a freakin’ tux and look amaze-balls.

  • SusiePamudji

    Ding ding indeed!

  • MzzPants

  • Julie Ree

Well my weekend is off to a good start here as my nerd love runneth over!

  • Claudia

  • rkdgal

He sure rings my bell…but I wish his people would darken his brows to match his hair a bit more. I like his hair darker, but the brows are a bit jarring and remind one that he’s not a natural dark brunette.

  • alyce1213

The tuxedo is impeccable. he’s standing straight without his hands in his pockets. (Look boy-stars!)
He’s so much more charming in motion and speaking. He’s one of those people who photographs a bit wooden.

  • This is a man who knows how to wear his tux.
Now, will someone who has the lust in their loins please explain it to me? Is he one you just have to see work his craft to fully get the appeal?

    • Jessica Freeman

Yes, I think the BKs have decided that his talent is what makes him extremely attractive.

      • Strictly because he is Sherlock or is he spectacular all around? I seriously have managed to never see him in anything.

        • Jessica Freeman

I’ve really only seen him in Sherlock and Atonement. Both he did well in. He was the gross child molester in Atonement and he did such a good job it still skeeves me out to think about his character in that movie.

          • jilly_d

OMG I did not even realize he was in Atonement. It’s been a while – but that is creepy!

          • not_Bridget

His performance in Atonement was what convinced Moffat that he’d found his Sherlock.

He’d built quite a respectable career of extremely varied parts (stage, screen, TV, spoken word & radio) but Sherlock made him a romantic hero. (Byronic Romantic, not Harlequin Romantic.) His “real life” appearances (available on YouTube) show him to be intelligent & quite charming.

          • Jessica Freeman

Oh I had to go find him on YouTube after those vastly different performances. He does seem to be quite a gentleman. Which made me swoon. Hard.

          • Alloy Jane

Yes. Atonement. He was amazingly creepy. I can’t look at him and NOT think, “You bite it.” I’m not a Cumberbitch (that is a hilarious term) but I grew fond of him after catching a spot where TMZ followed him around being absurd and he was so very gracious. They went on about how he is what America thinks of when we think of the English: refined and charming with quaint names and musical voices, just like Mary Poppins.

        • Eclectic Mayhem

Spectacular all round. I was really interested to see if he could pull off ‘action star’ in Star Trek Into Darkness and – eee by ‘eck – he really did. Even horribly miscast in Parade’s End he was marvellous. Plus which he seems to be an all round good egg, just a genuinely decent chap.

    • Sobaika

I’ve seen his work and I still don’t get it. But different strokes and all that.

      • If we all liked the same sausage, there wouldn’t be enough to go around.

      • Yes – I think he is a fantastic Sherlock and I can see that he is attractive, as in magnetic, but not lust-inspiring. Of course, when I am watching Sherlock I am too busy lusting after Lestrade for Cumberbatch to get a look in. He has pretty eyes though.

    • Tatiana Luján

Or to hear him on an interview, he’s witty and kind and has a very pretty voice.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I first saw him in Sherlock and thought him very odd looking but compelling. And I have always, always fallen in love with talent over looks (explains my obsession with Joe Pesci, Joe Pantaliano and Steve Buscemi). And then there’s that incredible voice of his. The man rings all my bells. Ding!

    • Scimommy

I used to see him on Sherlock posters and not get it. Then I watched the first ep about 6 months ago and was floored. Now I can’t tell whether it’s the looks or the talent or the personality (what bits of it we can see) – it’s all one extremely attractive package.

  • Jessica Freeman

Sweet mother of all things sacred. Ding Ding indeed.

  • PastryGoddess

    Hey boy!

    Ding Ding indeed

  • veriance

He does look delicious, but why are his cheeks weirdly orange/yellow? Lighting? Cosmetics? What?

  • imspinningaround

Gee, I have the strangest urge to buy a box of Garnier Black Licorice.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I love the slim bow tie.

  • gabbilevy

Can’t we start every day with a morning Benedict Cumberbell?

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

      I do!

    • JP

      Yes, please!!!!!

  • wontons

    What a lovely young man.

I feel about 96 and a half years old now.

  • Scimommy

I was hoping you’d feature these! I figured if these don’t rate Sausage Friday, nothing can.

Also – thrilled to see that his skin isn’t hidden under a pancake of makeup (cough-Golden Globes-cough).

  • gsk241

I don’t bear Benedict any specific ill will, but I just don’t get the appeal. Oh well, more for the rest of you Cumberbitches, I guess!

I will say, though, that he cuts a fine figure in that tux.

    • amanda siegelson

thank you. i have liked him in the few things i’ve seen him in and he does have a great voice, but i was just looking at these pictures and trying so hard to understand the cumberlove… all i could think of is: i bet his school friends are wondering what in the hell the world is seeing, because i’m sure he didn’t get the love back in the day. but, you know, more power to him.

      • sfo2kids

I think it’s a love-or-hate thing. I think some people are into more of a “manly-man” (e.g. Chris Pine), but others are more into someone that is quirky and seems to have more depth (nothing against Chris Pine, it’s all superficial anyways, but I think you know what I mean). I personally am more into the latter…and he looks so much better with his hair short and off his face!

    • mlurve

I’m in agreement with you. He seems like a perfectly nice dude, he looks awesome in this tux, but I don’t get the level of obsession some of my friends have for him.

    • Tina Kramer

ITA he wears the tux well, but good Lord, he is ugly. The first time I saw him was in that awful “Parade’s End” where he was blond and I told someone I didn’t think he was very attractive. I was assured that once I saw him with his natural hair color I would change my mind, but nope, still homely to me.

Trivia: His dad played the judge in Mr. Bates trial in Season 2 of “Downton Abbey.”

      • not_Bridget

        I loved Parade’s End….

    • Bexxx

I am…really, aggressively not attracted to him, and he’s a total brat too. I remember when Elementary came out he said something about how he wished they wouldn’t do the show but he understood that Johnny Lee Miller had a wife to “keep in nice clothes” or something of the like…vomit.

      • not_Bridget

        Find the right quotation!

        • Bexxx

“It’s very odd. I did say [to Miller], ‘Well, I’d prefer you didn’t do
it but you’ve got a kid to feed, a nice house in LA and a wife to keep
          in good clothes.”

          • Corsetmaker

It was a joke. They’re friends. He spoke about being misintepreted/taken out of context at a later date.

          • not_Bridget

So, he understands his pal (they worked together on stage) has responsibilities. What’s wrong with that?

Cumberbatch also criticized Downton Abbey, although he’s got friends in the cast; his father even had a small role. He was much more gentle with that overrated bit of tripe than it deserved.

Generally, he’s witty & good tempered. But The Daily Mail will always find something to criticize.

  • Fanny_Trollope

A man-star on the red carpet without his hands in his pockets, a sheepish slouch, or finger guns, and looking impeccable to boot. This is a Friday win.

  • WendyD

I’m fully aboard the Cumbertrain and this is making my whole day.
Not that I hadn’t just seen a hundred similar posts on Tumblr this morning, but leading the day on TLo makes everything shine a little brighter.

He’s just everything, the voice, the acting, the intelligence, the wit, THE HAIR. He’s the total package and I am a smitten bitter kitten.

  • decormaven

    Thanks for WERQing it, sir!

  • Kimmu

the Sherlock fandom has ruined Baconbits Cucumbersalad for me

But his tux does look nice

  • I want to give him a standing ovation! By the way, he’s wearing a fetching blue suit at the press conference right now! 🙂

  • Tatiana Luján

This is my favourite Benedict Cumberbatch post in your blog.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Thank you, gay uncles so very, very much. Happy sigh.

  • crash1212

I believe that’s about as perfect as a man can look. Ever. Le sigh.

  • capybara_cafe

    Thank you, uncles.

  • appliquer

    Oh, my!

  • Adriana

Wow, he managed a good hairstyle and avoided the Sherlock curls. I think that’s a first! Am I imagining it or is there some sort of weird, botched fake tan/makeup around his mouth?

    • Lorax523

The first thing he does when Sherlock filming has wrapped is cut off the curls. He hates his Sherlock hair. Which I don’t comprehend, but hey, it’s his hair. It does look very nice here.

      • Eric Stott

I used to have a very full head of wavy hair- and I absolutely HATED it because it seemed to take over- I couldn’t wear it any way but brushed straight back or parted in the center. The first thing I did when I left home for college was to go to a cheap barber and get a SHORT haircut

  • LauraAgain

He stands like a man. No hands-in-pockets, I’m-uncomfortable vibe here.

  • joything

  • MilaXX

Looks like someone finally fixed him up. I knew he could wear that hair straight if he cut it short. well played Cumbie.

  • NBG

He needs to share his tailor’s name with…well, everyone.

  • Janet B

Why do some (most?) men find a tux so difficult to get right? It should be a no-brainer.

  • Karie

Yum! Thanks TLo. He can ring my bell any day of the week!

  • Eric Stott

Slightly dorky – in the best way.

  • Bexxx

    Bendydick Blumberbutt

  • jen

    Ding ding, indeed!

  • marlie

He looks positively smashing. Happy Sausage Friday!

  • Danielle

Sweet mother of pearl, that is one tall drink of water.

  • valerie saenz

He looks like a much (MUCH) younger Dennis Quaid. Cutie.

  • ConnieBV

Who is this dude and why should I think he’s cute? Nice fit on the suit, but meh.

    • Howard Sturrup

I think sometimes people for whatever reason think people in film an television are good looking just because they are famous, wealthy an on tv . This guy is dressed smart but he is not much to look at, to each they’re own I guess.

  • Diego!

The suit fits him like a glove, but I don’t know why, I am having problems with his pants… the suit is really thight but the pants look sloppy when you compared them against the top half. He went back to dark black for his hair, once more.

    • demidaemon

It does have a weird stumpifying effect, at least in some of the pictures.

  • Therese Bohn

Stepped right off the cover of GQ. <3

  • JP

You boys have made me one happy Cumberbitch today. *flails at the perfection*

  • Cheryl

Yikes, another dude with what looks like box colour. Too dark, and too flat, too solid, no tonal quality to it. Unless he’s playing a character that dyes his hair, there is no excuse for such a bad colouring job. The Sherlock hair is so much better, style wise and colour.

  • deelup

He looks like he has a short inseam… Or a very long…

  • Qitkat

My goodness. I am not a cumberbitch, but Happy Sausage Friday to all who are 😉

  • CeeQ

    I swoon…

  • melanie0866

Why does he look all yellowish around his cheeks? Is it the lighting, or is a bruise, or what?

  • Linda LaPaz

See boystars, it IS possible to get a tuxedo fitted perfectly.

  • d4divine

Stunning!!! I can’t even begin to talk about how talented he is…such a great actor…check out Parade’s End y’all will weep!

  • clairellis

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Oh god! Do it again!!

  • Kate4queen

    Beautiful! 🙂

  • GorgeousThings

If you want to see Benedict Cumberbatch being utterly charming, google “Star Trek Neutron Cream” and watch the video. It’s hysterical!

    • sunnycalif

Paramount made them take down the video. No longer available.

  • Joanne Abrams

    He cleans up nicely!

  • lalahartma

    Well done, ‘Snatch!

  • Rachael

I heard his voice described as a “jaguar hiding in a cello”

    • That’s perfect. PERFECT. (Especially since, as a former violin player, I always had cello envy. The voice of the cello moves me so much.)

  • Akemi

Now THAT is how you wear a tuxedo. A+, Sherlock.

  • steeg of their own

Does anyone know who the designer is on his tux?

  • Pterodactyl111

He looks very snappy and put together, so that’s nice. I just don’t see why people fawn over him. I mean, I don’t think he’s ugly by any means … I just don’t get the obsession some people have with him.

  • sweet jeebus that man can wear a tux.

  • Alloy Jane

Jesus, his voice is so hypnotic I can’t even hear the words…

    • I think it’s necessary to listen to it at least a few times… 🙂

  • And all I can think is, the acronym is a graphics file format. Sigh. He looks lovely.
