Adina Porter at HBO’s 2013 Emmys After Party

Posted on September 25, 2013

We’re kind of loving this for serving up “seventies variety show host” realness. It’s like something Ru Paul would wear if she was doing a tribute to Carol Burnett or Cher. Or rather, Carol Burnett AND Cher.

“The Newsroom” star Adina Porter attends HBO’s Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Post Award Reception at The Plaza in Los Angeles, California.

It’s definitely too long, but we think she’s the rare lady who can actually make this dress sing. Hem it, bring it in just a skosh, and give her some attention-seeking earrings and this could be a head-turner.

Once again, it’s a shame about that backdrop. It was actually someone’s job to get that carpet made to exact specifications. It’s sitting in a dumpster somewhere even as you’re reading this.

I think I like it. I think I’d like it a lot better if it wasn’t competing with that hideous background.

    • GillianHolroyd

That background would have been x% better if they’d printed it on foil paper.

      • formerlyAnon

Well. It would have been even MORE evocative of patterned packaging, wrapping paper, Saturday morning cartoons, and novelty goods of a certain period several decades past. Been *better* . . . ??

  • Latin Buddy

To be fair, knowing celebrities will be pictured on it and detract from THEIR product, they made sure to make it as obnixious as possible so its brand can be included in every possible picture taken at this event.

    • decormaven

Yes, but it’s giving me a serious hate-on for HBO. Not engendering the love!

  • NoveltyRocker

Oooh, I love this print, it looks like some geometric rock insides. I’m surprised this doesn’t look too beachy to me. I love the choice of a long necklace, really flows with the long lines of the dress.

  • MilaXX

Agree, some better earrings and a hem, but overall I like this.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Way too long!

  • Slade Thunderdragon

Looks like the smooth muscle which I learned about in biology the other day.

    • kimmeister

Great, now I’m seeing marbled meat.

  • stubbornthoughts

Reads too much like a nightgown to me, but that face is gorgeous!

  • Rand Ortega

Love it. So Leslie Uggams circa 1972.

    • MilaXX

YES! She even looks a little like her.

      • Rand Ortega

Jinx! But that 1st shot of her with her head tilted up is pure Lola Falana.

    • decormaven

      Nailed it!

  • VioletFem

I like this print, although I wish the colors were a bit bolder.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

    Gorgeous nightgown.

  • Jaeda Laurez

i like the fabric of the dress, but not the shape of the dress itself. The band at the top looks like it was too small for her boobs.

  • Kate Andrews

That carpet could work on the set of a 70s game show.

    • TonyGo

I half-expect Goldie Hawn and Jo Anne Worley to pop out of little doors in that backdrop and trade bad jokes.

      • majorbedhead

And then we’d see the Flying Fickle Finger of Fate. (God, I’m aging myself here.)

        • Rand Ortega

          Sock It To Me!

          • majorbedhead

I don’t know how I remember that show, since it started when I was one and ended when I was *does math* five, but I do.

          • Rand Ortega

Same way I do. The beauty of reruns, Darling.

    • AnneElliot

Match Game, or the old logo for The Price is Right!

  • RoseJB

Hate it. As Nina would say, “It just doesn’t look expensive.”

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I hope the person who made the decision about that backdrop got fired. Yikes!
This is not a dress for everyone but man is she ever pulling it off. She looks hot where most people would look silly in it. I would look hideous in it.

  • FashionShowAtLunch

    Killing it with that makeup.

  • alyce1213

Elegant pool party coverup. The second set of straps make it look like she’s got a suit underneath.
    But pretty.

  • Anathema_Device

Ironic that the backdrop is so “Laugh In,” given the other references.

This color is lovely on her, but I don’t like the double strap thing going on.

    • kimmeister

The necklace is also competing with the double straps.

  • mmebam

I’m trying desperately to will the dress into my closet.

  • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

The backdrop is completely ridiculous and over the top, and I love it.

The length of the dress is crazy, and the boys are right that the dress would look better if it were taken in. But she still looks fab. The make-up is pretty, and I dig the tight Afro. Good look all around.

  • Imasewsure

This is super cute (although too long). Ru would have rocked her giant blond fro with this (and so would Solange for that matter). Can’t wait for Ru’s Cher Burnett Show!!

    • AnneElliot

I can definitely see Solange in this.

  • kimmeister

She matched her eye shadow exactly to her dress. Tsk.

  • Shawn EH

Big plastic bangles would have really given this look the mod flash it craves.

  • Stella Zawistowski

I like the print except for the odd seaming at the top of the bust, which makes it look like there’s a random scrap of plain pink fabric that doesn’t quite go all the way around.

    LoveloveLOVE her hair and makeup.

  • e jerry powell

No, Carol Burnett/Cher are both BOB MACKIE GIRLS. I can’t see Mackie doing something so unembellished.

Still, a great look, and I love me some Adina Motherfucking Porter.

Oops. Spoke to soon. I just found something Mackie (on Chris March’s PR season six blog, no less) in a very similar print. Just not as long, wrappish, and with a more interesting — and strapless — neckline.

Sitting in a dumpster? No. That carpet should have been set ablaze as soon as the last guest left that party.

    • demidaemon

The only thing it could be recycled into is wall decoration for someone stuck in the seventies. And, really, do we want to encourage that type of behavior?

      • e jerry powell

Exactly. But really, fiber reclamation is still too good for it.

  • SinisterKid

Ms. P is the tits- amazing in everything. Remember her turn as “the most boring person ever” in American Horror Story?? Killed it. Tara’s mom? Campy ridiculousness, with a side of killing it.

    • e jerry powell

I remember her best in the Broadway revival of The Women, though. Her “These rich white bitches be crazy” looks won all the cookies.

  • jmorino08

Goldie Hawn needs to be wearing this! It’s like the “mature” version of the outfits she used to wear on Laugh In! And it totally fits her style now!

  • nannypoo

Here is a beautiful woman I have never seen before wearing a dress in the perfect colors for her lovely self, but aside from the colors I do not like the dress.

  • formerlyAnon

The drape on the floor seems to oddly upgrade this from fancy pool party, at least in my mind. I like it moderately well in theory and very well on her.

  • hughman

Melba Moore on the “Mike Douglas Show”.

  • bertkeeter

Probably not hemmed as on loan from Decades?

  • majorbedhead

That backdrop reminds me of the psychedelic Sesame Street cartoons they used to do back when Sesame Street was gritty and weird and no one could see Snuffy. *ahem* Remember the one where the kid gets lost? Go find it on YouTube and then tell me you don’t see the similarities.

  • AnneElliot

I love it. It’s kind of like a giant Pucci print.

  • uneasyjd

    Maybe a bit Lola Falana?

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

She’s so pretty when she’s not being Tara’s drunken mother.

    • Agador Spartacus

THAT’S where I know her from! Thank you! Her face looked so familiar yet I couldn’t place her.

Wow. Maybe now I’m just comparing her to her character on True Blood but I’m LOVING everything about this look on her.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

        I love your user name!

        • Agador Spartacus

          Thank you!

  • Janet B

A dress that belongs to the same decade as that carpet/background.

I love the color combination, but I’d never put it on a wall. (Maybe my 1974 self would have, but that time is long gone.)
