Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke On the Set of “Girls”

Posted on August 07, 2013

It’s time once again to check in on the stars of HBO’s hit series, Girls Who Dress Really Shitty, you guys!

Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke filming “Girls” in New York City.

FUN QUIZ TIME: Is Zosia Mamet in costume for the show or on her way to a red carpet event? It’s just so hard to tell with her!

We reiterate that the costuming is very, very good for this show (you know exactly who Jemima is just by looking at her), but we’re gonna have to see this scene in context because even for Girls Who Dress Really Shitty, that’s one crazy-ass outfit Zosia’s got on.

Good Lord. It’s like the anti-Sex and the City.

    • Mb

In more ways than one…I actually found Sex and the City funny, but haven’t laughed once at Girls, and it’s supposed to be a comedy?

    • rh33

      My first thought exactly!

  • Ginny Ellsworth

This is the “we just got thrown out of our dorm by the Fire Department because some idiot pulled the alarm and I grabbed what I could find to put on because it is kinda chilly outside” episode.

    • alyce1213

What’s scary is that the characters “own” these items of clothing to begin with.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

Too true. My hair looked like that at one time as well. My roommate was a dance major and I got volunteered to be her big headed Barbie doll practice model a lot. My psych professor though I was having a breakdown most days.

    • JasmineAM

This is so scarily accurate. I hated those fire alarms at 6AM.

      • mmebam

The first week of my junior year, we had three fire alarms in one night between the hours of 4 and 6 AM.

        • teensmom99

Strangely, I thought I was brilliant for thinking there had been a fire alarm etc. I see that this was obvious to others, too.

        • j_anson

My freshman year the ADMINISTRATION decided to hold a surprise fire drill at 7am, in the winter, to which we all dutifully responded, only to find that is was just a drill – thus ensuring that if an actual fire ever occurred, we’d all die because we’d assume it was just another sadistic administration drill and not leave the building.

      • fursa_saida

I remember one time this happened in the dead of winter in Chicago, right next to the lake, and we were all wandering around feeling sorry for ourselves because no one was dressed for the cold. Then I saw a half-naked couple with a blanket and mostly felt sorry for them. What a boner-killer.

  • veriance

It’s like their apartment was on fire and they had to run out wearing the first thing they grabbed. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

    • Ginny Ellsworth

    • drdarke

      You owe @Gnny Ellsworth a Coke, @veriance!

  • save_the_hobbit

I know she looks crazy as hell, but that Zosia is really, really cute.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Ha! I was thinking the same thing – like her hair up is making so much difference!!

    • demidaemon

Maybe, if she didn’t look so cranky.

  • Danielle

Look, as a girl in my mid-twenties, I can honestly say that no quarter-life crisis I’ve weathered has ever driven me to wear Uggs with sweatpants AND a skirt.

    • decormaven

Thank you for redeeming my faith in womankind.

    • bellafigura1

Instead of the crossed arms, she should be hugging a bag of Doritos. That would truly tie it all together.

      • poggi

Hah! Yes, but to justify this look I’d go one step farther–a pint of Haegen-dazs, a bottle of wine and tissues.

    • NC_Meg

Same. I’m mid-twienties and having the shittiest of weeks but I am still nowhere near putting on sweatpants OR Uggs.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I’m guessing Zosia isn’t wearing a skirt over sweatpants, but actually wearing some sort of skimpier dress and wore that purple shirt over it when she wasn’t shooting.

    • alyce1213

Even without the purple top (which is ok on its own), this is a hopeless scenario.

    • roverrun

That’s basically my thought; on the way to the actual shot she is wearing comfortable, and when she gets there, the Uggs and sweats will come off.

    • Barbara Thomas

Fair enough, but it’s August! In New York City! It’s hardly sweatpant weather.

      • Adrianna Grężak

It’s chilly today in NYC! I wore jeans outside

        • I know! Exactly what I thought. There is no way this look WITH the sweatpants/uggs is the real costume. The top half is kind of ridiculous also, but Shosh is weird anyways.

  • barbarienne

It’s so…random. I don’t think I could mismatch like that if I actually did dress in the dark. The textures would conflict under my fingers.

I think the costumers must be playing a new fashion game. I mean that literally. Roll the dice, pick a piece. Somewhere on the chart there is a selection where they roll for what is on the bottom half, and this outfit came up “skirt + roll again” and generated “sweatpants” on the next go.

    • alyce1213

You must be right. There’s no other excuse for this.

      • drdarke

Given Little Miss Mamet has always had butt-ugly taste in fashion (just like Fellow Child Of Privilege Lena Dunham), I figure this is her personal joke on the audience…

    • rajf

and you would have to own those items…

  • kayleymaybe

I’m guessing (hoping) that she’s only being filmed from the waist up.

  • God, I love nearly everything that Jemima wears on this show. Those shoes, however, remind me of my grandma.

I know it’s been . . . a while since I hung with 20-somethings in the Big City. But the life-events progress these characters have made in the series doesn’t seem to me to be reflected in their appearances, by and large. Maybe I’m exaggerating the actual time elapsed (in my head it’s 2 – 3 years) which in your 20s is enough time for a lot of change. Which we’ve seen in the characters’ lives but not so much in their clothes, in my inexpert opinion.

  • MoHub

    Olsen twins’ castoffs.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I’ll just be over here drooling over the gray-shirted handler.

    • alyce1213

Come to NYC. There’s hundreds, maybe thousands of him.

      • eowyn_of_rohan

I appreciate the invite but I’ve lived in Manhattan my whole life!

        • alyce1213

Oh, cool. I thought you were from Rohan. lol

          • eowyn_of_rohan

LOL that’s just where I spend my summers. More glamorous than the Riviera!

    • MilaXX

      handler looks just as hipster

  • Trisha26

I haven’t seen one ep of Girls and based on this I’m not missing anything.

    • I tried to watch the first episode and quickly decided I wasn’t their target audience and that I didn’t have one shred of interest in those girls.

  • Imasewsure

“Is Zosia Mamet in costume for the show or on her way to a red carpet event? It’s just so hard to tell with her!” EXACTLY…

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

I just hope that it’s part of the script. Even when I wash the dog I dress cuter than that.

  • Imasewsure

Oh good… Uggs…. I’d hate to see that “darling” little trend go away

  • LipstickForPigs

Wow. Could they be on their way to the set? I was thinking that they might be chilly and that once the arrive on set the sweat pants might go…please?

    • marishka1

I’ll give you that, but …. it’s August in NYC fer cryinoutloud!

      • LipstickForPigs

        I know, right?

  • Town

Stripes, brocade, sweats, Uggs…….and a hair do that looks like a cross b/w Janelle Monae and Bo Derek.

In other words, it’s better than that blue & red hot mess she had on the other day. #why??

  • I appreciate what Girls is trying to do for those over 30. It’s saying to us, “SEE, you’re remembering it wrong. Your twenties were a giant hot mess, there’s nothing to miss about them. All that free time you lustily crave, you spent it looking like a total fucking idiot. That body you thought wasn’t good enough, that you’d kill for now, you covered it ill fitting, flammable fabrics. Don’t mourn for the lost years, you are so much better now.” Thanks Girls.

    • desi_girl

I agree. Even as a 20-something, the show tells me – Hey, it’s okay that you don’t have a fabulous job and an apartment straight out of a magazine and it’s okay that you aren’t going to the hottest restaurants and strutting around Manhattan in $500 shoes. There are other 20-somethings who are trying to figure their lives out. Just like you!

    • formerlyAnon

I work on a college campus. Some days, as I wend my way through the angsting crowd and overhear the bits of dramatic/dire/despairing conversation I feel I should be handing out cards saying in various specific ways “you’ve got something that trumps everything you’re feeling insecure over, I know I can’t make you believe me, but please TRY!”

      • You need to make those cards. Little, discreet, something you can slip into their possession without them knowing. That would be so awesome.

        • formerlyAnon

If only they would believe it! I didn’t, at that age. I look back and I shake my head.

  • Sheneve Butler

I’ll look for the skirt when I watch next season because I can’t tell if that shirt is a part of the outfit or something she put on because she is cold, like the sweats.

    • MilaXX

      Don’t they film in NYC?

      • AlisonS

Yeah, but Z doesn’t strike me as the kind of person to just hang around in as skirt that short. I’m also assuming high heels are required for this look too given the Uggs. If her character is actually wearing Uggs, then isn’t she off by a couple (10) years?

        • MilaXX

She’s worn skirts that short on the RC

          • AlisonS

I don’t doubt. It’s just her long series of ugly ass pants have been seared into my memory. Oh, I can think of a dress now. Great. That’s a whole plate of uggo that I can’t get out of my head.

  • MilaXX

The only positive is someone finally fixed Zosia’s brows.

    • demidaemon

For now. Chances are they are painted on for this scene, waiting to be washed away. (I think. Please correct me if she had the other problem.)

      • MilaXX

I think they are definitely filled in. What gets me is why she will have makeup on but not fill in her brows on the RC.

  • sparkleburnout

Zosia’s outfit looks like what half the 20 something girls here in Portland, OR wear daily. (Which makes me embarrassed for my city.)

  • SophiaPehawkins

I can’t take the hipsterness of Lena Duhnam and her show. These girls are just too cool to care.

  • hellkell

For the love of Karl, what is Zosia wearing? Burn it, burn it now. Jemima just looks like she grabbed a curtain on the way out, whatevs.

  • Coleen

Her eyebrows are filled in. As far as I’m concerned, Zosia’s look is an automatic WERQ.

  • Diego!

Is it written in the script they must wear awful clothes and hairstyles? Gee this is terrible…

  • judybrowni

No less that cray cray hairstyle.

    • Jaeda Laurez

The hair is the only part of the look worth keeping lol.

  • Sushy Gooroo

I think the guy or girl who is responsible for the clothing really really hates those girls and wants them to look as awful as possible. In this case: WELL DONE!

  • Oh good lord.

  • Darva Sutra

Zosia’s character must be back on the crack. Last time she smoked she lost her pants and ran around the NYC streets! I enjoy this show on a (far removed and superior) level. Babes, I was the angstiest rebel EVER through teens twenties but damn it, I did it with STYLE! I cannot with these girls’ looks. Girls Who Dress Really Shitty, indeed!

  • amanda lynn

It can’t be Zosia ready for the red carpet. Her hair looks like it was remotely done.

    • Candigirl1968

You took the words right out of my mouth.

  • Cynica

Unless you’re an actual refugee, there is no excuse for what Zosia is wearing.

  • Kate Andrews

    The boy looks good.

  • rkdgal

BUT, someone tamed the Brows of Sadness! That’s a real step forward. She can always take that stupid-ass outfit off, and when she does, her brows will still look fabulous 🙂

  • Jaime

I’m pretty sure I have panties with the same color nylon and lace as that wrap… not something that translates well to clothing!

  • kbshee

What is up with Zosia’s “Big Love” hair? In fact, the whole outfit has a compound vibe to it.

  • nannypoo

This is better than what Zosia usually looks like, so I would say it’s a costume.

  • bertkeeter

I can hear her humming ” I’m too sexy for this sidewalk”……

  • Having watched the first season (and not understanding all the fuss), Zosia’s character would totally wear the top and skirt, but not with Ughs (yes, I purposely misspelled that) and sweats. I’m betting they’re between shots or waiting for a scene to be set up, and Zosia threw on the sweats/Ughs to stay comfortable while waiting.

  • Ac-Cent Tchu-Ate

Perhaps that’s just her outfit on top and it’s cold so she just threw on something underneath…..

  • elzatelzabelz

Are they just screwing with us now? Let’s hope this has all been on purpose.

  • demidaemon

Holy shit those are some bad outfits. Do the costume designers hate these two? Going by Zosia’s face, the feeling is mutual. On every side of the camera. Especially mine.

  • Contralto

    WHAT is that HAIR?!

  • “Girls” is a great show with dialogue that is more than refreshing. I don’t have HBO, so I missed last season. I don’t know how Zosia’s character has evolved. She wouldn’t have worn this outfit during season one. Her character was tired of being a virgin. I think her look was more classic, as I recall.

I don’t mind the clothes, even though they aren’t color coordinated. But the hair. OMG. No one should leave the house with that “do.”

  • We’re witnessing the consequences of disaster nudity. The firemen will give you whatever random shit they have from the Red Cross box so you can cover the good china, but it never really quite goes.

  • Ugh, way too much hate for 20-somethings on this thread. Girls isn’t perfect, but please don’t make generalizations about all of us.
