WERQ: Oprah in Theia at “The Butler” Premiere

Posted on August 06, 2013

You go and get it, Miss Oprah.

Oprah Winfrey (pictured with Stedman Graham) attends the premiere of “The Butler” in New York City in a Theia custom salmon crunchy sequin cocktail dress paired with a Bottega Veneta Knot clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Miss Lady is serving.

Oprah honey (because we’re just that tight), let’s talk about something. You are one of the most powerful, wealthy, and accomplished women people of your time. You’re making your triumphant, Oscar-buzz return to motion pictures. You look amazing in that dress and your hair is giving LIFE. So you can let go of your man for a second and have your picture taken on your own, you know. We realize you probably hate to be put on display like that, but like we said, you look great and this is (at least partially) your night. The way you’re hanging on him we’d swear you were shy. And sweetie, no one really believes Oprah is shy. Shine your light.

But change your purse, because that one’s kind of ugly.

    Oprah finally met a battle she couldn’t win… Oprah=0, Humidity=1

    • Jaeda Laurez

Except that’s supposed to be on purpose. She just did a cover of O with massive hair. 🙂

      • Karen Belgrad

And thus the difference between Oprah and mere mortals. When my curls look like that, I slather on the Redken Outshine!

      • andreawey

the hair is my favorite part!

        • demidaemon

Agreed! Hair to the heavens and back!

    • formerlyAnon

That’s gotta be mostly wig/hairpieces/etc., so I suspect it was styled relentlessly into exactly that look.

      • Lucie Smith

Yeah, she was on some show I wasn’t really paying attention to last night that was playing in the background on my TV (maybe Entertainment Tonight?) and they did a whole segment about the wig and her styling it for the cover of her mag, etc.

      • MilaXX

Actually that is her hair. Oprah does wear wigs and pieces, but she also has a very thick & long head of hair.

        • formerlyAnon

          Wow. I’m impressed!

      • Aurumgirl

Not so sure. My hair looks exactly like that now, and it’s all humidity’s gain.

        • formerlyAnon

I hope your life lets you own it and swan about, gracing those about you with your queenly presence! Because, after all, it’s a lot easier for Oprah to slap on thousands of dollars worth of sparklies and claim a WERQ than it can be for the rest of us.

(This may not entirely apply to you. I may be hyper sensitive. I was blessed with a truly well-meaning relative who would look at anyone’s (my) hair and open the conversation with “Have you ever tried XX product?” or “when are you going to get your hair cut/colored like YY? I think it would really help with your ZZ.” )

    • d4divine

That is not humidity…that is all of her authentic hair self. It Is Glorious!!!

      • andreawey

I was wondering what people thought her real hair would look like, if not that lol…it’s spectacular!

    • leahpapa

It’s still a pretty big deal for a woman of color to rock a ‘do like that. I say props to her.

    • kim bunchalastnames

teh fuh? i love her hair like this.

    • Nelliebelle1197

      The hair is magnificent.

  • Donyelle

Miss O is letting it all hang out! WERQ!

    • oekmama

It’s not hanging, it’s flying! As in Super-fly!

      • Donyelle

It’s the lyric from Commodores “Brick House”

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love the color, and I love grown women dressing like grown women, not trying to “still” look young. The purse is weird, but forgivable. WERQ. (And keep Stedman at a distance- he’s smooshing the hair!)

    • purpleprose78

I agree with everything you say. I would like to add that the dress is completely her color.

  • I think Miss O looks amazeballs here.

I need to say something at the risk of having a Harpo drone come find me and shoot me down on my way into the local Target today.

Miss O can’t rock heels that well.

    I know.

But as a lady of substantial curve myself (and one that used to have much more curve, around the size of Queen Oprah), I know that when I wear stilettos or really thin, high heels, one takes on the image of an orange on toothpicks. It looks unbalanced.

I’m not sure that any other kind of shoe would go with such a stunning dress, but when she wears pants or something less fabulous, a wedge or platform gives so much more balance. In my poor little, SAHM fashion opinion, of course.

But other than that, she looks like the goddess she is. Werq, Miss O. Werq.

    • MilaXX

I kinda agree. I lean towards chunkier heels myself. However, if the skinny heel come in wide widths, which sadly many high end designers don’t make, it’s less of an issue. I don’t think she looks bad here, I just think not everyone was meant to go hose less, but for some reason Hollywood doesn’t do pantyhose.

    • Jessica Freeman

She admittedly hates high heels, but in some instances they are what works with the outfit. You could always tell when she had on a pair of heels as she would painfully walk around on the show.

      • YES. And I have that walk, too, in heels. In wedges, I’m good. But that much booty can’t be held up with sticks. I know this.

    • I assumed that was why she was holding onto him for dear life. And gosh she has diamonds in every color doesn’t she.

    • YoungSally

I agree — but to add a friend once removed analogy — someone I know sat next to Miss O at a large charity event several years ago — and not only watched as she teetered dangerously in the heels (think newborn colt but not in a good way) — but then watched O kick her shoes off to watch the performance.

  • Its as though she is trying to hammer home to everyone what her relationship to Stedman is. Odd, that. Ladywoman looks smashing.

    • Karen Belgrad

Not shown: the leash that keeps him tethered, LOL

    • 1964edithgrove

Want to remind people to visit Bay Area Bitter Kittens on Facebook. Nice to plan gtg’s, but your seminar on fashion through the ages is beautiful and fun for anyone who loves clothes, no matter where they live.

      • Many thanks, m’dear! Just let me know if it all gets to be too much. I can really geek out about this stuff.

        • Aurumgirl

It will never be too much, it’s all so fascinating. I can’t look at clothes the same way anymore–and I’m happy to say that.

      • formerlyAnon

Yes. I have shared a few of the photos with friends whom I knew would enjoy them. And you even answer questions! Thanks, kind sir.

      • nancymae

Omigoodness! I didn’t know this group existed and I live in Oakland! I’m really looking forward to diving in.

    • leilah

^Agreed, nancymae! Berkeley, me–and I forgot to “dive in” …

      • Well, by all means, do! We would love to have you.

  • formerlyAnon

She looks great. What I really like is that they both look like they are amused/enjoying themselves, even though he also looks like he’s submitting to, rather than participating in, the photo op.

  • Jessica Freeman

The hair is a bit too much in my opinion, or maybe it’s just the frizz factor. I adore the dress, but the purse is a no.

    • MilaXX

Have you seen the cover of this month’s O magazine?

      • Jessica Freeman

Oh yes, but she is on the red carpet, not the cover of a magazine. You are no Diana Ross, Oprah.

    • Bexxx

I think that beauty standards dictate that black women’s natural hair is “too much,” and that’s messed up.

ETA: A criticism of the beauty standards, not of your taste. I just think it’s something important to keep in mind.

      • Jessica Freeman

It was not a criticism of her natural hair, just that its actually distracting its so big.

      • DTLAFamilies

I’m Puerto Rican, I have thick curly hair, and I think this is too much. It overwhelms her head. I love natural hair but that doesn’t mean I have to uncritically love someone’s hairstyle just because it’s natural.

      • Adriana_Paula

I don’t think this hair is “natural,” as in untreated. It’s curly, but that is not the way it grew out of her head.

        • leilah

          You’re correct; it’s blown-out, with a little curl-enhancing (i.e., moisture and scrunching).

  • Tatiana Luján

I really don’t like the shape of her haircut, the tiara or headband she is wearing, or the way her lips are painted.
The dress and the shoes are great.

  • teensmom99

Great to see someone wearing the right (if unexciting shoes).

  • MilaXX

I don’t think the purse is ugly, but I think she should have chosen one with a bit more contrast. I also think Lady O is a master at public affairs and the bug hair as opposed to her typical sleek do’s is a subliminal call back to her new movie The Butler. I do wish she had taken at least one picture without Stedman. Gripping him that hard makes her look a little insecure.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Didn’t Theia also do Angela Bassett’s divine Tonys dress? I like the cut of their jib.

  • Adelaidey

If that dress was a touch darker, I would INSIST that Oprah FedEx it to Christina Hendricks as soon as she’s done with it.

  • Sparkly, poofy and a wee bit clingy, but still magnificent.

  • Getoverit

The whole man gripping thing makes me wonder if she had a few drinks before hand. A few drinks plus the heels might make her teeter a little.

    • Snailstsichr

If I was wearing those heels, I’d be hanging on to someone for dear life!

    • formerlyAnon

That’s what it would mean if it were me.

  • decormaven

Great color of dress for her, and claps for those shoes.

  • GorgeousThings

Loving the Diana Ross ’70s hair.
I bet she owns every color of that BV clutch and just grabbed that one as she ran out the door.

  • MissMariRose

I would love to see Melissa McCarthy in this dress. I think she would rock it too.

  • Lori

She looks terrific. The clinging doesn’t read as shy or insecure to me because Oprah. I assume she was either having shoe issues or squashing another round of rumors about how she and Stedman have broken up because she and Gail are teh ghay.

  • Oprah looks wild. I wouldn’t like anybody else in this dress or this hair, but I love her because she’s opening up and letting it out. I rarely like this type of dress–on the Hollywood perfect bodies–but Oprah is divine and womanly in her not perfect body. She quit her show to do other things. I’m guessing she feels out of her element so she’s holding on to Steadman for dear life. I love everything here, including the purse.

    • formerlyAnon

Given that they’ve been seeing each other for what? nearly 30 years (since the mid-80s)? and that part of their deal, apparently, is that he is NOT a constant red carpet appendage, but escorts her to only selected events, I’d guess she’s hanging on because she’s enjoying herself & him. The enthusiasm/conscious appreciation waxes and wanes in long term relationships. And whether they’re long term lovers, or friends who’ve created a protective faux-romance for their own purposes, they’re in a long term relationship.

      • I’d love to be a fly on the wall for twenty minutes to listen to a conversation between Oprah and Steadman. Oprah is so competent in all the important areas of life. How many women have an actual and real BFF in a girlfriend and a BFF in a boyfriend? I don’t have either of those. I have friends, some that are awesome, some more awesome than others. I admire Oprah for lots of reasons. I’m curious about this movie. It looks interesting.

Back to the real topic of this blog: I think Oprah looks appropriate for her movie opening. She’s not under-dressed or over-dressed. It’s surprising to see her hair this large. I like it; I’m glad it isn’t big on the top. I like Steadman’s tie, also.

        What a handsome couple.

  • MaggieMae

The fabric of the dress is so sexy. She looks great. I love the purse, even if it’s matchy-matchy. I love me a big ‘fro, but the shape of her hair with the headband is not doing it for me.

Stedman, you have officially made me feel old today.

    • mshesterp

I think it’s shape of the top of her hair that I don’t really like–I kind of want it to be poofy all the way around, a la Solange. I love the sides/bottom, which look fluffy and luscious.

But…it’s Oprah. She cares not a whit what I think, and I love the dress on her. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

      • mlle

This, exactly. I like her hair except for the flatness on top.

      • demidaemon

Now I have that Rihanna song stuck in my head.

  • Cathy S

I think her hair is a bit much. I like big, but not quite that big. I love her dress though and Stedman’s tie. Actually, I think Stedman’s tie is my favorite part of both outfits.

  • crash1212

She looks beautiful. I love that the shoes have bit of texture – great choice. Excellent foundation garments I think deserve a bit of recognition. They make ALL the difference.

  • Eric Stott

I think the hair is a tiny bit much, but I LOVE that accessory.

  • bertkeeter

    She’s a gorgeous woman!

  • HVM

Next time Oprah is doing the rounds in South Africa I’m going to petition her to adopt me so I can get my hands on her jewels. She is looking fabulous of late.

  • flamingoNW

I’m not sure it’s very frequent for Stedman to show up on the Red Carpet like this. She might just be so happy he’s there!

  • Chuck Barthelme

And maybe she should share her stylists with the man. His pants are so voluminous you can’t even see his shoelaces. It’s a nice suit, but a bit lacking in modern styling.

  • ringthing

She looks great and I’m so glad that she’s acting again. She was fabulous in The Color Purple, before she became the force that is Oprah.

  • veriance

    She looks happy. ~love it~

  • Shawn EH

She is owning her curves lately! Which she should, she’s fly!

  • Joanna Carver

Stedman should really just drop his last name.

  • ChelseaNH

It’s funny — I don’t quite love the hair, but I love that she did her hair that way.

  • Betsy

“Can you feel the love tonight?!”

  • Perigee

Gorgeous look, from halo to heels. I hope to high heaven that Oprah can reclaim frizz as an acceptably sexy look for styled hair. I hate the fact that my curly and voluminous natural hair isn’t seen as professional or polished unless I load it with enough product to individually demarcate each curl with silicone or dimethicone. Even then I am advised by other stealth curly heads to straighten it if I really want to be taken seriously. I have never straightened my hair a day in my life, so seeing Oprah look this good with frizz just makes my heart happy.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I’m not sure this is the most flattering way to style a natural, but PROPS to Miss Oprah for giving stylish women permission to STOP. FRYING. THE. HAIR.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    Attagirl, O.

  • CassandraMortmain

Gorgeous dress that really flatters her. The matchy purse works for me as do the shoes. So I guess wild Diana Ross hair is now officially a thing again?

So nice that Oprah brought her grandfather to the premiere…

    • pop_top

I hope so, because the weave I’m wearing is serving up Diana in this humidity.

  • twocee

Really, I love this on her. She looks great.

  • mmebam

Can we talk about her latest magazine cover? Serving Chaka Khan realness!

  • TSkot

    Ugh. No.

  • majorbedhead

I kind of love (and by love, I mean am insanely jealous of) the hair. She looks great. She must have underpinnings made of some otherworldly material, because I’m about the same size as her and I would look like a bunch of pigs wrestling under a blanket if I wore that, even with Spanx.

    • formerlyAnon

I’m betting she has custom made corsetry.

  • YoungSally

Dear O — Thanks for reminding me that my cockapoo is way overdue for a groom. I have been describing his current hairstyle as “bush moving towards hedge” but now I will just say “Oprahrific!”

  • The bigger the hair, the smaller the hips…

  • marlie

Miss Oprah looks fabulous, from head to toe. And as I grow my (now natural) hair out, I hope and pray that one day mine looks as gorgeous as hers does.

  • lynnlee

Wow! That color, the big hair- love it all!

  • MzzPants

Metallic pumps alert. GOD, I want that hair!

  • Nancy Karpen

The whole look is great. I love the hair, and the purse, eh, well it’s only one element in a great look

  • e jerry powell

From those camera angles, they look as though they’re about to fall over, so Oprah’s probably holding on just to stay balanced.

    • Not applicable

I don’t know she walks upright with that significant boobage she’s got… Let alone how she walks in heels!! Damn, that bra is a feat of engineering!

      • e jerry powell

        No doubt.

I never realized how short Oprah is until now.

        • sunnycalif

Steadman is 6’7″, so she’s really not all that short.

          • e jerry powell

I’m 6’3″, so I’d still be looking down at the top of her head.

        • Not applicable

I don’t think she is short actually. I have read that a lot of people who see her in person are surprised bc they expect her to be 5’4 and she’s more like 5’8″ or 9…

          • e jerry powell

            5’7″, anyway.

  • LUV the hair, the shoes, the dress – the purse unfortunately looks like gingham when the light hits it wrong, but otherwise she looks AMAZING.

  • KaileeM

Oh, to play dress up in Oprah’s jewelry closet.

That color is gorgeous on her. WERQ!

  • stubbornthoughts

I’ve been noticing a severe lack of WERQs lately, so when I hopped on just now to see Oprah as a WERQ, I was like, “Totally makes sense.” That dress and that hair is marvelous on her.

  • ferngilly

As someone who uses Oprah as a litmus test for choosing clothes (would Oprah wear a portrait collar? Yes? I’M NOT EVEN GOING TO LOOK AT IT) I am impressed beyond measure with how pretty and lovely she has presented herself tonight. Typically she gives off a Chico’s kind of vibe, but this is definitely more chic and not Chico’s. Her hair also makes her look so young, approachable and carefree. I have always wanted a big Diana Ross fro but as an Irish italian Catholic girl from the suburbs with only minimally frizzy auburn hair it just wasn’t going to happen.

I want to be Oprah right now, so perhaps my fashion litmus test has reversed: Would Oprah wear Uggs? Yes? Well, um, maaaaaaaybe I would wear them inside. Maybe. If they were lined with her fro hair.

  • amanda lynn

  • Chickadeep

    The hair is EVERYTHING.

  • alyce1213

Oprah looks amazing and I have no problem with a little red carpet affection for Stedman. It’s lovely.

  • Monica De Leon

Why does Stedman remind me of one of her cocker spaniels?

  • Dan_In_NYC

There’s just something about seeing amazing jewelry on Oprah and thinking, “she probably owns that.” Those bracelets are great, and she is serving it all.

    • alyce1213

Not probably, definitely. Oprah doesn’t borrow.

    • mom2ajs5

Shit, the beads on her dress are probably real jewels! Love her and glad to see her so happy.

  • Fabulous hair. Really, the best I’ve seen her look, well, ever. The purse doesn’t bug me.

  • snarkykitten

bangin dress but that headband splits her hair in the middle so…she’s got poodle ears

  • fursa_saida

At first I was going to say I never want to see the phrase “custom salmon crunchy” again, but now I’m thinking about sushi and I’m okay with it.
