WERQ: Ashley Madekwe in Diane von Furstenberg at the InStyle Summer Soiree

Posted on August 15, 2013

Miss Ashley is giving us Studio 54, coke-mirror-in-a-clutch, uber-bitch realness and we are breathless with love at the moment.

Ashley Madekwe attends the InStyle Summer Soiree in West Hollywood, California in a Diane von Furstenberg halter jumpsuit paired with a vintage Chanel No. 5 belt and Saint Laurent sandals.

Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Othilia Simon

We know our Bitter Kittens, and we know there will be some discussion as to whether a harem-panted, satiny yellow jumpsuit should ever receive finger-snaps and neck rolls of appreciation from us, but we don’t care. Sometimes the overall feel of a look is greater than its individual elements. The lady is SERVING and we can only appreciate. SNAPS of DISCO RESPECT, girl.

I love yellow and I love DvF but I absolutely hate jumpsuits. But I’ll give this finger snaps because she looks great almost in spite of the shape of the thing. And that canary-yellow color is divine on her.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

        I agree on all counts.

        • eowyn_of_rohan

It would have been nice if they’d have evened up the balance of fabric between the bottom and the top.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The runway version does that nicely with the jacket.

            • eowyn_of_rohan

Exactly. It just seems disproportionate here.

            • Tatiana Luján

That’s why the runway version looks flowy, while this just looks baggy.

          • 3boysful

Perhaps you forgot to count the strips of tape that must (I hope) be holding that halter in place.

            • StellaZafella

Undressing she says: “Just rip it off quick, like a Bandaid!”

    • Donyelle

She could be Pat Cleveland Jr in that ensemble

      • jen_vasm

I was totally going to play the Pat Cleveland fierce card here.

      • Clueless_Jock

        Or Tina Chow.

      • VictoriaDiNardo

or done in all white, Bianca Jagger, The Studio 54 Years.

        • Donyelle

YES! Has a bit of giorgio de sant’angelo vibe too

          • VictoriaDiNardo

Oooh, I had a giorgio de sant’angelo bikini – loved it! Such fun clothes…

            • Donyelle

alas, designer don’t not what sexy is nowadays.

    • MilaXX

I would have preferred the belt the model’s wearing, but I have to admit, she’s making it work. Not a look I’d recommend other try.

      • poggi

Yes, I like it too but it definitely needs a “don’t try this at home” warning.

      • NoveltyRocker

Yep, don’t really like the black on this chartreuse leaning yellow and the solid, wide belt on the model does a better job of defining the mid-section. This looks less like a belt and more just a purse hanging out on her belly. It reveals all of the seams there too. Not quite as polished as the runway styling but agree, she is making it all work.

    • Diego!

She looks stunning! But it’s no WERQ to me. The pants are too puffy for my taste… The ones the model is wearing look floaty, and it’s not the case here. Overall look is great. Attagirl (?)

      • 3boysful

Puffy pants are never a good look for anyone. 11th Commandment.

        • Diego!

          Nor puffy sleeves! ;)

          • Monabel

Oh, puffy sleeves can be divine….

      • DuBey2

This. Do you think its because of her stance? I do love her styling of it though.

        • Diego!

No, it’s not her stance. Those pants look like clown pants. Sorry, it’s not WERQ-ing to me. She looks great except those pants :P

    • HVM

She looks fierce. Her belt is all kinds of awesome.

      • RL McGruder

That belt sent me straight down an eBay rabbit hole…

        • HVM

If you find it can we go halfsies and negotiate a shared custody agreement?

          • RL McGruder

            Ha! I am SO down.

    • FunButNutz

To paraphrase Lou Grant….”She must have gone through 4 other belts before she chose that one”

    • flamingoNW

No, sorry, can’t go along with strips of fabric for a bodice and poofy yellow pants. No WERQ for me. Not at all.

      • charlotte

The only thing that looks good is her face.

    • imspinningaround

      Elvira Hancock realness.

(I caught Scarface last night for the first time in forever. I forgot how Michelle Pfeiffer looked FLY as HELL in that movie.)

      • homespunner

Exactly what I was going to post – how much this reminded me of M. Pfeiffer in Scarface.

    • DamH

Love the color/texture on her, her attitude and she’s selling it. I would love to add her bracelets but it’s already perfection.

    • frannyprof

      Love it, even with side-boob.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I think your intro tainted my assessing abilities. OF COURSE I’m going to love whatever pic I see after reading that. It can’t be denied she is working the shit out of it all, but had I stumbled upon this anywhere but here, I doubt I’d be feeling so much love for it.

      • eowyn_of_rohan

Seriously. I saw this on another website (sorry TLo!) last night and had a raging case of meh. But now I like it a bit more just because of the write-up here.

        • Denise Alden

The power of TLo is strong, isn’t it? We’re lucky they exert it only for good, aren’t we?

        • DuBey2

“a raging case of meh.” Loved that! I’m stealing it.

      • ShaoLinKitten

I think that she is culturally appropriating traditional Persian garments by wearing harem pants.

        Kidding.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

          You are my people.

    • Tatiana Luján

I love the hair, the makeup and that color on her.
      I hate the belt.

    • mmebam

I can’t award finger snaps to sideboob.

    • Jaeda Laurez

it’s like everything terrible in fashion came together to make something awesome. I love it, but I hate it at the same time. And i love the belt, which would be terrible with anything else, but is great here. WERQ.

      • TLJezebel

Exactly! Sometimes all kinds of wrong make a right. And attitude is EVERYTHING!

    • Tatiana Luján

If a bathing suit gave that amount of sideboob, I wouldn’t buy it because I would consider it’s a size too small.

    • Nancer

The pantsuit is all kinds of crazy in the crotch…. I see what you mean by the whole being larger than the sum of it’s parts, but really.. that pantsuit is a wreck!

    • A Shiny O’Connor

Only wish she’d have gone with the runway wide metallic belt – which would also be suitable (I’m told) for snorting coke off.

      • teensmom99

And I love the jacket-y thing (there must be a term for it but I don’t know what it is) that the model is wearing.

        • A Shiny O’Connor

Looks like an over-sized shrug or mini-cape. ‘Shrape’?

          • teensmom99

I was thinking over-sized shrug–so maybe it’s more of a crug. In any case, I love it beyond all reason. It should look Eileen-Fishery-middle aged but somehow it just elevates the whole outfit–yellow harem pants and all–to perfection. Princess DVF somehow knows what she’s doing.

            • A Shiny O’Connor

              Yes! CRUG!

    • Chaiaiai

Somehow, somewhere, Miss Diana Ross is smiling.

    • SewingSiren

I love the entire look, except for the #5 hanging from the belt which I hate emphatically.

      • TropiCarla

lol … You made me go back and look for the #5. I really just assumed that giant thing was a tiny clutch she had dangling from a finger. Perspective is a bitch, ain’t it?

        • SewingSiren

Now if it HAD been a square metal little dangling finger bag , that would be a WERQ! But the #5 would still have to go.

PS I accidentally pushed the down arrow when aiming for reply. Sorry.

      • SugarSnap108

YES. That godforsaken #5 is killing me. But she’s fabulous otherwise.

    • LondonMarriott

Classic example of attitude as an accessory! Lurve.

    • MartyBellerMask

Bianca Jagger meets Hammer Time. And somehow it works!

    • carnush

Flawless. That belt makes the look.

    • kimmeister

Now that is the right way to do eyelashes.

    • http://www.criminalmoviereviews.com/ Manon @ CMR

This is gorgeous, I have to agree!

    • sagecreek

I respect anyone who can pull off that yellow, and she sure can.

    • ashtangajunkie

Love this! I prefer the belt worn on the runway, but still a big win. The yellow is fab on her.

    • bertkeeter

As I remember …tiny sterling silver spoons and glass viles were the prefered mode of conveyance @ 54…w/ the mirrors reserved for home entertainment. Just saying!

    • Jake

Model’s belt is WAY better but I would give this a WERRRQQQ as well!

      • Shawn EH

Better than Vintage Chanel? No sir!

    • Lilak

Standing with her hip cocked may not be the best way to present the pants — which might account for the XS top/XL pants problem I had with this initially.

I much prefer the runway version — esp. the belt: (1) on account of general sleekness and (2) on the moddle, the flap over the belt works as an elegant design element vs. Ashley’s random bunching.

On the other hand, her attitude is real and effective, that’s for sure! So I’ve got to join the consensus here (sub-WERQ, that is) in liking this more than I should.

      • Nondescript

That was the problem I had with it too… the proportions of the pieces are off, and hence they make her proportions look off. It’s a great color for her, though.

    • marlie

I love this, on her. I don’t think any other ladystar could rock this look.

      • Shawn EH

        Zoe Saldana?

    • AnniNoone

Her attitude totally carries this. She updates it just by being herself — she’s a 21st century Gamine Girl (a la Carey Mulligan) nailing disco chic.

    • Tamara Hogan

      Perfection.

    • Trisha26

Not on board, just awful. If she took the pants off I’d expect to see the “top” was actually part of a monokini.

    • susan6

All it needs are some really huge sunglasses.

    • mishka

Pshh she knows she looks amazing.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Not on board with this one. She looks like she’s one of MC Hammer’s backup dancers.

    • Tracy_Flick

I think she looks great, but she was really walking a fine line. A tiny misstep in styling (bear trap or nude shoes, mermaid hair) would have turned this into a joke.

    • ChelseaNH

Diane von Furstenberg is allowed to make disco clothes. This is something most designers (especially those who did not, like DVF, experience the movement firsthand) should not even think of attempting. Besides, it’s not like the world needs a lot of disco clothes. (I know, some will argue the world doesn’t need any disco clothes, but I disagree. Some things should never quite vanish from this earth.)

    • crash1212

I’m loving something I would normally hate with all my heart and soul. WERQ indeed.

    • NinjaCate

      Do Not Want.

    • TSkot

Great… if she was made up for another Studio 54 flick; WAY too retro.

    • Qitkat

Love the outfit as DVF styled it, with the contrasting blue shawl/jacket (perfect color combination, soft and very springlike) and the wide silver belt. Not so enamored with Ashley’s version, although she does emanate fierce.

    • E. D.

Why the hip ruffles? It would definitely be a WERQ without that.

    • LaSylphide

Not crazy about the outfit, but I guess if you’re going to show off the merchandise, that’s the way to do it.

    • formerlyAnon

I’ll admit she brought it, though I’ll add to those saying it needs the balance the jacket provided. (Not, necessarily that jacket, but some balance.) I will allow y’all to bestow a WERQ based in large part on the belt, the hair and makeup, and her perfect poise.

Whilst simultaneously noting that without a jacket it’s a stupid garment which she’s wearing stunningly well. I would hope never to be seated near someone whose modesty depended so strongly on some kind of adhesive, however. That kind of suspense can detract from casual conversation.

    • Constant Reader

It’s a comfort to know that whatever befalls me, I can count on TLo to say things like “Miss Ashley is giving us Studio 54, coke-mirror-in-a-clutch, uber-bitch realness.”

    • chylde

      She purdy.

    • Just Me

I can’t be mad at her…she is serving fierce on a platter, outfit be damned.

    • Lilithcat

      No. Just “no”.

All that glue holding the fabric to her boobs must be terribly uncomfortable. And the material looks cheap and sleazy.

    • EdithP

She needs some big ol’ hoop earrings, though.

    • UsedtobeEP

More and more I see people on this site and my first reaction is not “Werq!” or “Auf!” but “…who?”

      • s elin

        She stars on ABC’s “Revenge.”

    • ewes_urn_aim

Did a quick scroll down of the comments. I cannot believe anyone could possibly not like this!?!
This actress? model? singer? (I have no idea who she is) is giving me solace that not all young celebs are cookie-cutter.
      I am a fan.

    • melanie0866

SERIOUSLY? A shiny Hammer-pants jumpsuit? SERIOUSLY?

Excuse me, I’m going to dial the Philadelphia police and request they do a welfare check on Tom and Lorenzo. Because clearly, someone has them tied in a closet and is posting crazy stuff on their blog.

      • s elin

When you put it that way, it sounds crazy, but you have to agree she looks fierce.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

      No. Just…. no.

    • DilettanteDeconstructed

Not to my taste, but the color looks great on her, and I love the red lips + nails and toes.

    • myristica_fragrans

i was expecting scroll down fug, but this looks great! she just needs red nails and big gold hoops.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Younger kittens, believe me when I say there was a time when Disco fashion was fierce and beautiful, and Miss Ashley is serving that up in spades here. The styling is what takes this look from tacky to fabulous, and the color on her is stunning.

    • Lilyana_F

Wow, I absolutely love this on her!

    • Anniebet

I’m not feeling this, except for the belt. That’s fun and quirky. She’s a lovely young woman with perfect skin who can wear that color well. There’s a bit too much makeup and flat hair here. But I cannot abide that jumpsuit. If it were any number of other young (or not so young) celebs in this outfit we’d skewer them.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      OoOoo. That is good.

    • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

I don’t get why this got a WERQ. The shape is awful and there is a dire need of more jewelry.

    • macwell

B************h – you betta WERQ it out! EVen your eyebrows are giving me LIFE right now! ;)

    • quiltrx

I dig the harem-pant portion, actually…but the top could use at least a half-yard more fabric, or much more.

    • kathrineb

Not my personal taste but I love the colour and she seems to be more than pulling of this look better than anyone else could. That jumpsuit only works on the less busty.

    • CeeRich

She lookks fabulous. So 70’s Halston. I love it. That Chanel belt is EVERY.SINGLE. THING.

    • tereliz

      BAMF WERQ

    • s elin

I would kill for that belt. Why all the criticism?

    • Warrior89

      Her skin is perfection.

    • librarygrrl64

      Fabulous!
