Taylor Swift in Hervé Léger By Max Azria at the 2013 MTV VMAs

Posted on August 26, 2013

Taylor Swift apparently wore a Taylor Swift mask to the VMAs.

Taylor Swift attends the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in an Hervé Léger By Max Azria dress paired with Prada shoes and Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira jewelry.

Hervé Léger By Max Azria Priscilla Beaded Wire-Neckline Dress

That is some seriously pancakey makeup, girl.

Also, it appears that her hair stylist was going through a manic episode and just randomly pinned her hair while cackling maniacally. In other words, everything north of her neck is seriously problematic. Her head looks like it’s floating away from her body.

Dress is fine. The color suits her. Not in love with the shoes, though. Too clunky and not-quite matchy.

But that head is frightening us.

  • Love this dress for her. And essentially, I like the retro thing going on north of the neck. But a more polished version would have slammed it.

    • ballerinawithagun

I love this whole look also but not for VMA.

      • I does seem de rigeur to release one’s inner tramp, no?

        • ballerinawithagun

Absolutely! We must do it every once in awhile.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, she looks fabulous here (except for all that highlighter), but it seem too nice for the VMAs. She should have saved this dress for another red carpet. And that manicure looks bad, like she did it herself in the limo. I love that she’s doing something different with her hair.

        • Qdahling

Yes! The nails are so distracting

          • Getoverit

She looks to be a nail biter. Hard to clean that up.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I agree – I think she looks fantastic, actually, but it’s a totally wrong venue.

  • DinnerIsServed1972

It made her look so old. So very old.

    • KC

I disagree and I kinda feel like she can’t win. Everyone was always getting on her about how she dressed and acted too young. They hated the bangs, they hated her hair down. They hated when she wore her hair too tight to her head. Now she’s trying something different and now she looks too old and her hair is all wrong. I personally think she looks very pretty.

      • SugarSnap108

I agree. I really like the dress on her, and I like the *idea* of the hair. I just think the execution is wrong; it looks like the stylist gave up half-way through. But overall, I think she looks great.

      • leahpapa

I think it’s hard for her to win because everything she wears looks like one kind of drag or another. Alice-in-Wonderland Drag, Hipster Drag, Humble-brag/Dork Drag, and this, which is a sort of Ava Gardner Drag. I have no idea who Taylor Swift “really” is, or even what the Taylor Swift brand-identity is, because she always looks like she’s adopting a persona. (You could say the same about Gaga, but she knows that it’s drag; part of her brand is making her “authentic” self inaccessible and enigmatic. TS comes off as not having an authentic self.)

        • sekushinonyanko

Maybe her thing is that she’s super draggy. Like her makeup instructions are “drama! More drama, dahlings!” And when they show her heels she screams “higher! I must tower over the tallest of strippers!” And when they show her low key looks she goes “do you know who I am! Maybe if I add enough lipstick and liner…” Like I imagine Christina instructs just with “CLASSIC HOLLYWOODER!” shouted instead of “EDGIER! AND MORE ORANGE!”

        • KC

That doesn’t seem fair either. Taylor is only like 22/23, she’s playing around with styles, trying new things. Maybe she hasn’t found herself yet, we shouldn’t be criticizing her for that. From what I can tell she likes girl/cute/sparkly things still, but people complain when she wears that stuff as well. Most people complain when she wears something very girly and “twee”.

          • Could we please dispense with the idea of “fair” or “winning” when it comes to red carpet commentary? This is meant to be fun for the participants; it’s not a judgement rendered by an international prize committee.

          • KC

I’m sorry, personally I feel like Taylor is often criticized unfairly. I can understand criticizing a person’s outfit if it doesn’t work or if their look is starting to get stale, but I feel like people are constantly criticizing this girl no matter what she does and it just doesn’t make much sense to me. I don’t necessarily place you guys (TLo) in that group because I have seen you give her props for a really great look, but I do think there are too many people on the net who just grumpily hate on her for some weird reason. I personally think its a bit more than just red carpet commentary in certain cases.

  • I love this. Sorry, boys.

    • KC

I think she looks great as well. I like the hair. A lot of people were complaining about her hair getting monotonous and now she’s trying something new. I dunno, I think she looks glamorous.

    • Kate

Me too! Though, the makeup could have been toned down a little.

    • amanda siegelson

agree. when i saw this posted online last night, my metaphorical jaw dropped in appreciation. i couldn’t disagree with T&L more, really. i think the only thing i MIGHT agree with them about are the shoes. but i really don’t hate them at all… i think she looks amazing. absolutely amazing. full stop.

    • conniemd

      I love it too.

    • Agreed. My jaw dropped at how perfect that dress is on her. And she is confident in it which goes a long way towards selling it to me.

  • deelup

I thinks she looks lovely. Nice mix of sexy and glam without looking like a try hard.

  • Jessica Freeman

I wished her dress appeared more ‘retro’ like her hair. The shoes are a definite no.

  • I absolutely get what she was going for, and frankly, I applaud her for trying, but she should have changed stylist teams if she wanted such a radically different look. They clearly don’t know how to turn their syrupy Tay Tay into whiskey Taylor.

    • decormaven

A little more oak, with a hint of blackberry.

  • Tanya Wade

It’s the blood on the fingers that’s killing me. You bite your nails. Must we highlight it with blood-red polish? I kind of like Queen Possum’s hair, though.

    • kmk05

It’s the blood of her enemies/competitors, and she is wearing it with pride. Same thing on her lips!

She is really made for those bandage dresses. Her cleavage is tasteful, which is such a feat with a dress like this!

    • Jessica Freeman

I dont think its blood…it looks like she quite literally painted her nails in the car on the way over.

      • Faerie Nuff

I just scrolled down to read the comments to see if anyone else thought that.

    • BrooklynBomber

She plays guitar, so she keeps her nails short. She may or may not bite them. But I agree they look terrible. I’m guessing it’s polish, though.

      • Tanya Wade

While we may never know for sure what her hand deal is (although the blood of her enemies is a good guess!) I know many guitar players, both men and women. They all have longer nails on one hand and shorter on the other for playing purposes. Tay Tay has always been a biter from photos I have seen. Hers are just too painfully short and ragged. But again, I actually like the hair, and for me to pay a compliment to this possum is a sign of the apocalypse. As are the VMAS, in general.

        • BrooklynBomber

True. I know many guitar players whose fingers don’t look like that. As for the VMAs, I think Brooklyn is officially ruined.

          • Sarah

Yeah, WTH. I saw the location and my eyes rolled so hard that my temples hurt. Keep that biz west O’ the continental divide!

        • Lily-Rygh

As a guitar player myself, I do think that explains the fingernails on her left hand. (She IS right-handed, yes?) But the right hand, where you’d think she’d want at least slightly longer nails for picking? That’s a whole different story. (My manicurist lovingly tells me I have one city hand and one country hand.) Regardless, one can have short nails without looking cheap and janky.

That said, any hair style that vanquishes the booms is going to be a hit with me. So overall, I think this look goes into Tay’s win column.

      • bassfemme

The index finger looks like it could be smudged polish. It’s the hangnails that are chewed within an inch of their life.

      • Watts

There are short nails, and then there are “puffy fingertip past the end of the nail” nails. The latter indicates a biter, like my dad and my best friend and Miss Swift.

    • barbarienne

I like the blood-red polish, but if she’s going with a full-on vixenish look, she needs LONG NAILS. I hate long nails, but they were required with this look. Not dragonlady, but dammit, just some tips to get past the ends of her fingers by a millimeter or two.

  • Julia

I think the dress is gorgeous and it is nice to see her wear some color (even if it is navy blue) but I think it’s a little much for the VMAs.

  • NightOwl

You can tell the hair person was out of her depth – note the bobby pins they tried to hide in the faux-fingerwave. Fingerwaves are a very precise and sleek style; this is totally a haphazard last minute curling iron job. I think they attempted a fingerwave, realized they f’ed it up, and went crazy trying to do *something* to the rest of the hair.

  • Telperion

That dress is fabulous on her! She needs a new hair stylist though.

  • alyce1213

I love her hair. In general I dislike bandage dresses but this one’s pretty nice.

  • anneland

She looks lovely in every way.

  • DamH

As long as my love for Tay-tay, still hate bandage dress and her hair is kind of overdone to go with her makeup.

  • I think it’s gorgeous. Hair and all.

  • Leah Elzinga

taking a turn down Julianne Hough Lane… I love this colour for her, but that is not HER dress, but I’d cut a bitch for those shoes though I’m pretty sure it won’t come to that. If Taylor’s next song is “Bitch Cut Me for Shoes” though…

  • anotherkate

I have a feeling that is performance makeup, so I will forgive it. I actually like the hair–or the idea of it, anyway. I even like the look in general; my only quibble is that it feels a bit formal for the VMAs. (that is one where everyone dresses like a skank on purpose, right? I can’t keep up.)

    • Taylor didn’t perform.

      • anotherkate

No? Ha, I didn’t watch (just wait for the TLo recap). In that case: Tay, WTF?

  • Introspective

not bad. not great. just meh.

  • majorbedhead

It’s better than Katy’s look, that’s for sure.

  • Nancer

While I agree about the hair and makeup, I am just pleased to see her stepping away from her comfort zone. I like that she is moving away from the bangs. Though I love the image of the hairdresser cackling maniacally…. I can see it!

  • kmk05

SHE LOOKS SO EVIL I LOVE IT. I think it’s the cat-eye makeup and the red lip which, paired with that dress, make her look extremely fierce, and also, incidentally, age her. Villainous Femme Fatale Tay Tay FTW!

  • DTLAFamilies

Since the 90s are coming back, do you think matte makeup is coming back as well? Along with those overplucked brows? And the dark red lips?

    • kmk05

If you look at the recent makeup lines (end of last year, this year), matte (especially matte red lipstick) is everywhere. I think the brows will remain full, though (see Cara Delevigne).

  • suzinrva

Eh, she knew she would have serious camera time and probably little time for touch ups….bandage dress, extra bobby pins and pancake maquillage made her battle ready.

  • bunnydiet

    She looked gorgeous!

  • Danielle

She cut quite a figure on the RC, but I HATE the hair.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love those shoes – not with that dress, but I’m sure I could find something else with which to wear them. Everything else leaves me cold.

  • Cameron Turner

I think she looks great and a bit like a young Charlize Theron

  • Emily

I want to feed her but I think she looks fine, as much as it pains me to type that.

  • Chipster

I really like the bodice of this dress on Taylor but everything else is just a little too much. The hair is too complicated and the makeup a bit overdone.

  • teensmom99

I love the shoes–great retro look for a young woman. And I kind of love the hair. Tay-tay needs waves.

  • HVM

Bandage dresses are so tired. It doesn’t help that this one is on such an equally boring person.

  • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

    I think she looks fabulous.

  • wisdomy

Taylor also hurriedly did her own nails.

  • BrooklynBomber

Much as I’m not a fan of bandage dresses, I think she looks fabulous, if a bit wooden.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I get what she’s trying to do here, but I don’t think she’s matured enough to pull this off

  • clairellis

I too must disagree. I think she looks wonderful. Love the dress.

  • filmcricket

The make-up’s a bit much, but otherwise I think she looks pretty spectacular.

    • decormaven

The MUA Is applying the paint with a heavy hand. This reminds me of her look last week. It’s referencing Mae West’s make-up in Myra Breckinridge, and that’s way too much cosmetic for such a young face.

  • Jacquelyn

Her eye makeup is a little heavy for that dress and the shoes would be great with another outfit. But that dress does make her look very statue-esque.

  • sagecreek

    I Want Those Shoes.

    • kimmeister

They’re amazing, just not with that dress.

  • MaggieMae

It’s definitely a matte foundation, isn’t it? I wish I looked that good, though!

  • MissMariRose

I’m so sick of bandage dresses and Taylor Swift that i feel like this is a perfect match of boredom.

  • lrober03

Her face looked like a drag version of Taylor Swift

  • Let’s give Taylor much credit for wearing something very different for her. Not the same boring hair. Not the same boring shorts. I don’t like the hair but she stepped out of her comfort zone.

I’d like to have a better look at her shape and the fit of the dress but her pose–with her hands on her waist–gets in the way.

  • Denise Rambo

It looks like she did her own nails. In the dark.

  • largishbearishAtlish

sigh, its like everyone is trying to out-whore the others…sigh

    • She looks nothing like a whore. I had to scroll up again to view the pictures and see it from your POV but…nah. Nothing is screaming ‘whore!’.

  • Poeta Paz

I think she looks great. I especially like that I can see her whole face without bangs.

  • Tatiana Luján

The makeup wouldn’t look so bad if she changed her facial expression and closed her mouth.
And I like the idea of the hairdo, but I wish the hairpins were either fully visible or not so badly disguised.

  • Akmall Razlan

oh Poor girl!! poor girl. Her head was like bullshit.. yup! its all over the place. The dress was nice on her, btw, she is 5f11 so, nothing could go wrong, yes,the fit was amazing. GOD!! the head, what the hell happened with her stylist. Did they die of something? ugh! Fugly!

  • Town

    Her cuticles are scaring me.

  • crash1212

Not a big fan of bandage dresses, but I love this one and I think she looks stunning. We’re always telling stars to get out of their comfort zone…well she did and I think quite successfully. I like her version of this dress better than the flared bottom one on the model. Nicely done.

  • MilaXX

She looked over dressed. Cut that dress to just at the knee and maybe we’ll pretend the head doesn’t look weird.

  • embers618

It’s like someone caught her in the middle of her transformation from Disney princess to Disney villain – the hair just wasn’t quite done yet.
That said, I do like the dress. It’s just so drastically different from her normal style, and the styling is poorly executed, so it seems like quite a jolt.

  • shawna

I LOVE that she has her actual, real nails and not the horrible fake claws most people you have featured lately have.

  • sweetlilvoice

Overall, I like her look but her nails are killing me. I normally don’t nitpick so much, but she looks so classy and grown up everywhere else but her nails looked bitten and rough. Her cuticles look horrid. Did she do her nails herself? Because mine look like that to when I attempt to polish them which is why I go to a professional. She couldn’t have gotten a manicure? Plus, how short is she? Those shoes are monstrous!

    • broke&fashionable

As a nail biter, I have to give her a pass. I am 27 and for the life of me cannot kick the habit. I have been scolded by many a manicurist, because there is so little they can do to clean you up when you have ragged cuticles. We all have our things.

  • Judy_J

What, no grills? Get with the program, Taylor!

  • nannypoo

I think she looks fabulous. Well, not the nasty manicure, but the rest of it is beautiful.

  • julnyes

if her hair was a little more polished (I think this hairstyle works better with shorter hair) then I would thoroughly like this look.

  • Love the dress. It’s fantastic on her, sexy, feminine, not trashy despite being banded. Shoes are fug. And I don’t like exsessive highlighting/contouring they did to her face. Hair is fine by me.

  • bertkeeter

Fit is right on, though I find the dress a tad boring. And agree on hair and makeup…

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

  • marlie

The dress is very pretty, though completely unoriginal – right up Taylor’s alley. It’s a great color for her, though. Agree that the shoes are too clunky for the dress, and her hair… It looks like an up-do after a night of dancing and partying has caused all of the curls to droop.

  • largishbearishAtlish

you know, the more you look at the hair the worse and sloppy it looks. this woman has MONEY and can hire more hair people than you can dream possible. how could she make this look like something she did in the little truck, with one hand on her way to the part time job at Piggly Wiggly (a chain of small grocery stores in the deep south), while fixing her dress and checking to make sure she has her work smock in the truck with her…?

  • Laylalola

Fashion-wise she’s really starting to trend toward Country Music Plastic Female Star to me.

  • Diego!

I love it!!!! Tough, I must say, she seriously reminded me of Mariah Carey’s look in the “I still believe” video, go check it out in Youtube. She looks gorgeous, kinda WERQ’ing!

  • emilaweb

I hate that I loved this so much, and dear god i tried so hard to hate it.

  • Stella Zawistowski

As much as she annoys me, this is a great look on her. I wish the dress were the navy that it looks like in some of the photos, and not the black that it probably is based on the other photos and the model photo.

  • Amy Lawson

After I’ve done my hair and I’m putting on my makeup, I put a bobby pin in my hair right where she has one to keep my hair off my face so I can do my eye makeup.

I feel like that’s what’s happened here. Maybe somebody forgot that pin? That’s happened to me before, but I am 43 and have not one single handler so that’s probably not the case here. Just trying to offer helpful suggestions for the hair.

    Love the dress though.

  • Danielle

Adding: I used to be a fan of Taylor, but watching her reaction gifs to Miley’s performance where she looked like every single hateful popular girl I ever encountered made me lose any respect for her.

    • For me, her reactions are pretty much like how everyone WANTED to react when they saw Miley’s performance. I know that’s how I was viewing it at home. And at some point, I couldn’t even watch it anymore. It was embarrassing.

      • Arjay Gallo

Basically Miley (and Robin Thicke, equally as awful) were both cringe-worthy.

But with her public shaming for Harry from 1D (which I must point out; the relationship lasted 2 months and it’s been over for 9) and her general slut-shaming, “cry for me I’m Taylor” antics, sh’e basically that one girl we all knew in high school that’s still in high school.

  • guest2visits

I LOVE the shoes. I’d wear them even if they’re not perfect. I think she looks amazing, as usual.

  • Jeff Warhurst

She looks amazing. You’re blinded by hatred lol.

  • Is she going for Baby Charlize Theron?

  • CakesOnAPlane

She needs to stop with the Paris Hilton swayback before she gives herself lumbar issues.

  • formerlyAnon

I think this look is great, though a bit fuzzy round the edges with the hair. Meaning I LOVE the idea of the hair, but it looks a little less polished and smooth than my vision. Can’t argue that there’s a face full of makeup, there, and we can definitely tell.

  • seelebrennt

did she do her own nails in the car while driving over to the VMAs?? wtf.

    • susan6

That was the first thing I noticed. “Honey….you’re rich. You can PAY someone to do your nails.”

  • calimon

Can we all just agree that she is a professional model, with a little talent on the side, rather than vice versa? That would make it so much more acceptable for me that she garners this much attention.

  • melanie0866

She is beautiful and looks amazing in that dress, but man, what a personality deficit disorder she has going on. Yeah, honey, keep beating up on cute little Harry Styles and see where that gets you.

  • dschubba

This is the best a Real Housewife has ever looked.

  • neonseattle

    too severe and aging.

  • ErmengardeGreen

I’m happy to see someone eschewing nail trends, though that is kind of faint praise. I don’t think anything here is hideous, but it’s kind of Oscars Taylor Cutout, not VMAs Taylor Cutout.

  • KikiAvocado

she was trying her hardest to muster up some babyheads …nice effort Tay! Her retro vibe is not quite there – but i see where she was going

  • tereliz

Hey, at least she didn’t so the mermaid skirt. I love this dress. Her face does look a little plastic and the hair is too cute for it, though.

  • JauntyJohn

The color is gorgeous on her and she certainly knows how to dress her figure, but this look just accentuates what I feel every time I look at this young lady: Girl be wrapped WAY too tight. Gonna snap. Any minute.

  • NinjaCate

Did she do her own nails? Because….. O.o

  • steeg of their own

She does not have the upper body for Herve Leger. That dress looks like it’s about two sizes too big for her chest, and the straps look about an inch longer than they should.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I hate what that dress is doing to her boobs. It’s kind of an ugly dress, too.

  • frannyprof

Did she paint her own nails?

  • Erica_Vuitton

Eh gotta say her BFF Selena rocked the navy better but I love this dress. Very sexy without tipping over to slutty.

  • Vanilla pudding. Yawn.

  • kimiakay

Does Leger only make bandage dresses? Every time I see his name it’s on a bandage dress. I admit this one is pretty good on her, but the top of it could be better. Hair is just barely o.k. She does a lot of cat eye and it’s o.k. too. My problem here is the jewelry. There’s too much. Rings, earrings, large bracelet. I’d say drop the rings. Oh, and your manicure is sad. Wait. I take it back. Hair is not good.

    • steeg of their own

The label makes other stuff too (and I find their other stuff more appealing personally), but the bandage dresses are their signature item. Bandage dresses seem to be the only thing they give away to starlets to wear for free on nights like this, that’s for sure.

      • kimiakay

BOGO, maybe? lolol Just kidding. I know Britney S. wears bandage dresses a lot.

  • Darren Nesbitt

Anyone else getting a little Karlie Kloss from this?

  • DuBey2

I think she looks fantastic, especially in the last shot.

  • Meredith

T Lo, I was sure you would LOVE her hair…. 🙁 I guessed wrong

  • Shawn EH

She looks pretty. Let Kanye interrupt her now!

  • Susan Bigler

She needs to stop biting her nails, stat! They look painfully short.

  • Laurie Landry

The dress is very pretty but for the VMA’s?

  • Lauren Lynch Fox

She looks lovely but did not think it fit the occasion and it was just a yawn

  • Gina Mondzelewski Small

I think she looks absolutely fabulous!

  • Aidan B

If she had better makeup, this would be a WERQ in my book. Fits her like a glove and she’s giving face. Love it!

  • macwell

I think she looks great here, but the makeup is so unfortunate that it kills everything that’s going right with the look…

  • loopy

tay-tay needs to lighten up on the nail biting.

    • Glammie

Yep, I have crap nails myself–look at them and one breaks–but I don’t paint them red. I’m surprised she didn’t go the acrylic route for the event.

  • CommentsByKatie

I actually love all of this, even the heavy make-up. It feels like blonde Dita Von Teese, or something? Except a teenager version, still a little sloppy and unsure. I hope she continues in this direction. It’s much better than the Innocent Princess of Etsy garbage she used to sell.

  • nicewilliams

I’m pretty sure Taylor Swift enjoyed her Sunday night at home, and had this obvious Madame Tussauds fill-in take her spot.

  • martha

love the shoes, hate the nails, LOVe the bracelet

  • lilyvonschtupp

I don’t care. I want her to spontaneously combust.

  • Perhaps too much makeup, but overall, she looks fantastic. While I agree that the shoes are too clunky for the outfit, I’m totally jonsing on them.

  • superemang

love the dress. but she’s trying too hard to change her image. TOO hard.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I actually really love the whole look. But agree….for the VMA’s??

  • Jenna Marie

I don’t love the face and makeup here, but I really liked it all on camera. They did it right for the show, maybe too much for the red carpet.

  • coffeeandshoes

Tired of the ubiquitous Herve Leger bandage dress, tired of the ubiquitous girl who can’t sing.

  • Lilyana_F

Yeah… no. Femme fatale you are not.

  • Danielle West

It was painful to watch her during the awards. She is clearly always “on.”

  • titaness25

Dunno if anyone’s mentioned it, but she reminds me strikingly of Karlie Kloss with this make-up. I think she looks lovely, btw. Maybe her hair could’ve used a bit more brushing, though?
