Taylor Schilling in Roksanda Ilincic at the 2013 Hollywood Foreign Press Luncheon

Posted on August 14, 2013

Oh, hey. It’s Taylor, star of our new obsession, Orange is the New Black, which we have watched all the way through at least 3 times now. And bought the book. If they make a Litchfield Prison video game, we might be in trouble.

Anyway, it’s always fun for us to first encounter a budding star in their actual work, rather than on the red carpet, which is how we’re usually introduced to them. So now we have all kinds of preconceptions about Taylor and she gets to knock them all down, one by one, as we yell at her for disappointing us. Fun! The blogger/celebrity relationship is just as codependent and dysfunctional as … well, every other relationship, we suppose.

Taylor Schilling attends the 2013 Hollywood Foreign Press Association Annual Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California in a Roksanda Ilincic dress paired with Sophia Webster ‘Finn’ heels, an Edie Parker clutch, and Sophie Hughes jewelry.

Sophia Webster ‘Finn’ Hot Pink Sandal

Edie Parker ‘Jean’ Clutch

Oh, girl. We were more than fine with everything until our eyes made it down to your feet. We might have forgiven the matchiness (not likely) but all those bows and straps and everything are just too much for our delicate blogger brains to handle. They look like high heels designed by a 6-year-old. We love the dress, clutch, jewelry and makeup, though; so you’re off to a good start there, Tay.

Now, let’s discuss the show, since that’s the real reason we put these pictures up. Spoilers to those who haven’t seen it (and who should really see it): We don’t get why many of the viewers think Piper & Alex somehow make a better couple than Piper & Larry. Believe us, we’re not arguing for heteronormativity here. We’re not convinced she should be with Larry anymore than she should be with Alex, but we don’t quite get how the latter is a better option for her. We can’t help thinking if Alex was a dude with the same history (co-dependent, manipulative heroin dealer who ratted Piper out and lied about it), the audience wouldn’t be nearly as likely to ship them. Frankly, we think Piper needs to figure out who the hell Piper is and forget about pairing off with anyone until that’s settled.

  • Just don’t look above the neck or below the knees and this look is good! (except for the makeup which is beautiful, but the hair is a no)

    • Tippi123

Really? I think her hair looks great!

      • It’s limp, and I don’t like how half of it is pulled back (although this is how my hair looks everyday haha, so who am I to judge?).

        • Tippi123

😀 And I thought it’s nice and straight, her last haircut seems to have been recent and I actually like that she pulled back her hair on one side. I do that as well from time to time. 😉

  • Nancer

Don’t hate me, but I am loving the shoes! Maybe it’s the girlie girl in me – that is stuck in the six year old stage – but I think they are fun! And I also like the earrings.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

No hate here. I squealed (much like a 6 year old) when I saw them.

    • kmk05

Definitely love them too! I don’t mind the matchy-matchiness either because she didn’t do the bag and nails and the dress is so simple and short.

      She looks gorgeous.

    • Getoverit

      I love the whole shebang!

      • Nancer

SO glad I am not the only one! :]

    • She gets extra points since the shoes actually FIT!

      • Nancer

She must not be famous enough yet to get the free designer swag…

    • lulukittie

      They are totally Barbie shoes!

  • Emily Giovanni

Well I don’t really love Piper with either Alex or Larry. But Alex calls her out and counters her extreme self-involvement a bit more than Larry does which is very much needed. But very good point on the whole co-dependent – manipulative – liar issue.

    • LJCdoc

I’ve only seen the first episode so far, so at this point I like her better with Larry, because all the controlling/manipulative stuff with Alex definitely came out in episode 1. I’m guessing my opinion will change as I watch the rest of the episodes.

      • Emily Giovanni

Yes, my opinion definitely evolved over the course of the season. But at the end, I still don’t know what is best!

        • LJCdoc

As predicted, I’m 3 1/2 episodes in, and warming to Alex & over Larry. I’m on the fence about Piper. I mostly feel sorry for her. Oh, and I heart Nicky. But then I’ve always thought Natasha Lyonne was one of the most underappreciated actresses, all problems aside.

          • Emily Giovanni

Yeah I actually like Piper despite her self-involvement. But there are SO MANY characters to love on this show. Nicky is one of them. 🙂

  • ♕ Natalie ♕

I agree absolutely that Piper needs to worry about herself. Alex, Larry and Piper all don’t need to be with ANYONE to be quite honest.

    • Sobaika

The love triangle from hell. They are all awful and awful for each other.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I don’t mind the fuss of the shoes because the dress is simple. I know there’s a “thing” about matchy shoes but I’m good with it. What I’m NOT good with is the fact that the shoes look like plastic. That, combined with the fuss, just makes them look cheap. But a lovely color, overall.

    • drdarke

      Yes, @jaedalaurez:disqus !

  • Sara Brams-Miller

YES!!! I totally agree with you! Also, thank you for introducing me to the show, cause I’m now completely obsessed with it as well.

    • BarniClaw

Yes, yes! Another thank you to TLo for that. I devoured it and then went on line and read all the reviews I could find (including TLo’s, twice). Have only been able to convince one other person I know to watch, so I’m psyched to read BK comments here.

  • Heather

My question is always: what are some of these women doing in federal prison? I get how Piper’s and Alex’s crimes were federal, but the others who were in for everyday murder/drug charges (can’t believe I just wrote that) would, I should think, be in state prison?

    • julnyes

Well Ms. Claudette’s crime was federal (if she went in for the human trafficking along with the murder) and some of the other women might have been part of a a ring that moved drugs across state lines – that makes it federal, right?

      • Heather

Yes, that’s possible. I guess they don’t want to get too deep into that issue, but it always seems like a bit of a plot hole to me. I think of federal crimes as primarily financial and white collar (tax evasion, insider trading, etc.).

        • julnyes

I know for sure that moving drugs across state lines can land you in federal prison (I’m just not sure if that is a crime anyone on the show has been convicted of)

        • Meg0GayGuys6

I had to serve on the Federal Grand Jury a few years ago and I was surprised at how many crimes were Federal. Like the others said, if it’s anything having to do with crossing state lines, that’s Federal. Even if you’re not physically crossing borders, but maybe sending things through the mail, that’s federal. I’ve only watched the first episode so don’t know if this would apply to any of the characters, but just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in.

    • charlotte

And aren’t some of them a bit young to be in an adult prison? I don’t know much about the American judicial system, but Janae seems to be a minor, so shouldn’t she be in juvie?

      • VioletFem

I assumed she was 18 and that the flashbacks were of her as a senior in high school. Even if she got convicted as a minor, it’s possible that her sentence might have been long enough that she would have to be transferred from a juvenile center to an adult facility to finish out her term.

        • charlotte

That raises the question why she has to serve such a long sentence for a non-violent crime. We only saw her steal something, right? Or maybe her sentence was extended because she is not a “good” inmate, had to be sent to SHU etc.

          • I just started watching this week and am up to ep 6, I think. I think they are glossing a bit over some details (like a medical show where the docs can do heart surgery, brain surgery and plastic surgery – it makes it easier to tell the story). But I think Janae is a bit older and there is more to her story than just the first offense. For instance, the drug lord (for lack of a better word) that tried to protect her by throwing her out of the party also offered to help her financially. If that help came from the spoils of drug money, perhaps she got caught up in that.

    • Inspector_Gidget

Not to mention an informant would NEVER land in the same prison as the person they ratted out, for obvious reasons. That just never, ever happens because they are very careful about that. But it makes for good drama, no?

      • chelwi

I’m pretty sure that the real life Piper did end up in the same prison as her Alex (think her real name is Nora).

        • charlotte

No, she didn’t. That was made up to add drama to the show,

          • chelwi

On sharing a cell with the former girlfriend she had committed her crimes with

“Truth is much stranger than fiction when it comes to the criminal justice system.

“Actually being able to confront her brought me to the point of recognition that my situation was my own responsibility and my own fault. She offered me an ‘opportunity,’ but I chose to take it. She didn’t hold a gun to my head; she didn’t make me do anything. She asked me and I said yes. I think that if I had not been brought face-to-face with her I would never have gotten quite to the point of taking full responsibility for my actions.”

          • She did, actually. They were both transferred to a facility in Chicago for a few weeks to testify.

          • Inspector_Gidget

Interesting. They must have made an exception and determined there was no threat involved. I know this is generally a huge no-no because if anything happens to either party, it opens up the facility and the state for a potentially epic lawsuit.

          • Donna Luder

On NPR’s Fresh Air last week, Terry Gross asked Piper Kerman about it and she said yes they did end up as cellmates and, ultimately, she was very grateful for the opportunity to let go of the past. It was a fantastic interview…

  • HVM

My inner 6-year old wants to throw a tantrum for those shoes.

  • No to the bow!

  • Tatiana Luján

That salmon is really good for her coloring.

    • zenobar

It really, really is – and they got her lipstick shade PERFECT, which can be tricky with salmons and corals (which tend to read waaaay too brash in photos).

  • julnyes

AHHH – yes, I knew you guys would see how problematic Piper’s relationships are.. Both of them. I think part of the Alex love is that she is just hotter than Larry.

    • Totally. But I really dislike Jason Biggs. Nothing appealing about him at all from personality to looks. And the character is just the same.

  • Heather

I like the color of the dress, but the length (needs to be a bit longer) and raw-looking hem cheapen it for me. Looks very ‘I bought it at the mall, and I don’t mean Nordie’s’ to me.

  • Binge watched with my MIL – Am fully addicted.

I predict Taylor has an amplified need to be girly since she is so unglamorous on her show. Those shoes are pretty much the exact opposite of prison Toms.

  • charlotte

A good dose of Pi…Taylor is just what I needed today. I agree with your criticism both regarding her outfit and the reception of the show.
Does anyone except me actually like the Piper character?

    • I really like Piper. I think she’s naive, self-involved, and wallowing in denial, but I think she’s generally likeable. The beauty of the show is that there isn’t one character who isn’t deeply flawed. ~T.

      • FashionShowAtLunch

Indeed. I would also add that the beauty of the show is that there isn’t one character (besides many of the prison staff, of course) that isn’t also highly sympathetic as well. Very nuanced characterizations.

      • CatherineRhodes

Alex and Larry represent different sides of Piper’s personality — which is why advising her to get clear about what she wants before pursuing either relationship is really good.

But Alex and Larry aren’t the only two choices out there. Maybe Piper needs to find someone who is a little of both, someone who doesn’t represent either extreme.

    • Inspector_Gidget

I started out unimpressed, but wound up liking her more and more as the show progressed. And I’m pretty sure that was the intent. In the earliest episodes the Lifetime Movie Protagonist bells were tripping, but they neatly fleshed her out over time, into a three-dimensional person.

  • Bisous3

Ummmm Crazy Eyes tweeted me you guys. Just needed to tell you. It was the highlight of my summer.

    • julnyes

The actress or someone with a faux account set up as Crazy Eyes / Suzanne?

      • Bisous3

        No… seriously.. the actress! Verified.

        • julnyes

    • Bisous3

And Alex is funnier, smarter and a WAY better lay I bet than Larry.

      • julnyes

Funny, Sexy, Smart and got Alex’s butt thrown in federal prison after using her as a drug mule.

        • Bisous3

She didn’t mean it. She just loved Pipes so much she needed to make sure if she was going to be locked up, it was going to be with her. 😉

        • … then lied to her about it, then lied to her fiance about the particulars of their latest affair, as if Piper was some sort of aggressor and Alex was just along for the ride. She’s fun in a lot of ways, but Alex is clearly toxic for Piper.

          • julnyes

exactly. Piper isn’t an innocent bystander, but Alex is hardly A+ relationship material either.

          • Inspector_Gidget

Yeah, she needs to steer clear of Alex. She went out of her way to land Piper in prison, only to abandon her once she got in. Because PIper was too self-involved, which Alex already knew! And all because PIper didn’t drop everything to rush to her mother’s funeral after they broke up. Because she didn’t want to run drugs. Sheesh. Pretty lop-sided when you really think about it. One is self-obsessed, and one ruins lives and masterminds federal crimes.

I think some people like the pairing because they snark well together. But from a living perspective, it’s a time bomb.

        • julnyes

whoops meant Alex got Piper thrown in prison.

    • Denise Alden

I think that actress is fantastic, and I love/fear Suzanne! She’s just so sweet, and then absolutely certifiable. But I can’t help loving her.

  • marlie

The dress is rather plain, but it fits her well and is in a pretty color. The shoes are ALL wrong. They were the needle-scratch on an otherwise nice look. A gold pump or strappy sandal would have been perfect.

  • deitybox

Key difference: Alex is trouble, but she’s smoking hot and exciting, and gets Piper. Larry is a boring douchebag who made Piper’s imprisonment all about him. He’s really the worst.

  • ashtangajunkie

The shoes pain me. Now, more importantly, the show: I think that the preference for Piper + Alex has more to do with how hot Alex is. Larry is boring in comparison. That being said, Alex is totally bad news for Piper and both of her relationships are equally wrong for her at this point, albeit in different ways and for different reasons. I actually subscribed to Netflix just to watch this show (such a good decision!) and it has completely captivated me.

  • PastryGoddess

Frankly, we think [insert name here] needs to figure out who the hell [insert name here] is and forget about pairing off with anyone until that’s settled.

    Words to live by

  • nannypoo

I like the dress and the clutch but no kidding those are some tacky shoes.

  • majorbedhead

Those shoes are an atrocity. They DO look like something a 6 year old would make – at camp, out of gimp and contact paper.

  • Judy_J

I really like her dress. Shoes are a bit fussy. As for OITNB, my favorite character is Red. I adore Kate Mulgrew, and I’m so happy to see her back in a great series.

    • julnyes

What did you think of Red sabotaging the kitchen?

      • Judy_J

I understand why she did it, but she took it a step too far. Causing a grease fire was dangerous and stupid. She was desperate to get her kitchen back.

        • julnyes

Red (like many of the characters on this show) is wonderfully flawed. When I saw her first flashback I assumed she ended up in prison as an unwilling accomplice, but further episodes showed her as a burgeoning criminal mastermind.

  • zenobar

I keep waffling on this show. I tried to get through the first episode but it was so, so depressing. After reading all these comments, though, maybe I need to get back on the horse and give it another shot this weekend.

  • bertkeeter

    Agree….North of ankles…fresh, clean and understated…

  • kirkyo

I knew TLO would hate those shoes and I have to agree. Too bad, because otherwise she looks great.

  • MilaXX

The show sort of works my nerves. That said I think Piper & Larry deserve each other.
As for the outfit, I don’t mind the shoes being matchy, but hate the bows, however pair those shoes with a pair of skinny jeans and it could work.

  • I love the show and, like you guys, have watched it three times, some parts of episodes a lot more. I was really surprised at how my feelings for Piper changed through the season. I liked her at first and bought the victim of circumstance line, but as the season went on. . . . not so much. I like Alex for being self aware and wonder why she wants anything to do with Piper since she seems to know her well. I like Larry, but he is just as clueless as Piper and I think they were both just seeing what they needed to see in each other. Jail may have saved both of them from a disastrous marriage. Piper is interesting. She has less and less substance as each episode passes. Pretty soon she’s going to have to start deciding who she really is and I can’t wait to see her make those choices. But right now, I’m not liking who she is, but she has potential. Watching her is like a growing pain for me.

But, they aren’t even the most interesting characters. I want to know more about everybody else. Really excellent writing and great pacing with the character development. The show is a joy to watch. I’m totally hooked. After such a disturbing finale, I can hardly wait to see where it goes.

    The shoes are ick.

  • drdarke

it’s always fun for us to first encounter a budding star in their
actual work, rather than on the red carpet, which is how we’re usually
    introduced to them.

So, weren’t wowed by her on the ATLAS SHRUGGED RC – or THE LUCKY ONE Rc, @TomandLorenzo:disqus ?

  • bellafigura1

Love those shoes, not the color. Bright yellow!

  • SophiaPehawkins

I fucking hate Alex. Piper is too codependent on both. Neither is a good option.

  • CatherineRhodes

LOVE “Orange.” Best thing on television since “Breaking Bad.”

Those who want Piper to be with Alex are projecting their own desire for vicarious adventure. Alex is beautiful and exciting in an Ecstacy-on-the-beach-in-Cambodia kind of way, whereas Larry is a bit of a bore. But if Piper was your best friend, seriously, what advice would you give? This is not a choice between gay vs. straight. It’s a choice between outlaw and convention.

Let’s have a debate over episodes aired each week vs. the whole series dumped at once. The binge-viewing is really fun, but I’m thinking the better experience is having time throughout the week to process. (Just think, if the episodes were released weekly, TLO could blog. Kinda impossible with a series dump.)

    • AshBookworm

Well, the AVClub is writing about “Orange” every week. They review two episodes every Thursday.
And I think Vulture does so every week too, but I don’t read those so I don’t know if they’re reviewing or recapping.

      • charlotte

I never read the Vulture reviews because they just retell the episodes, no matter what show they are talking about. It’s a shame because otherwise it’s not a bad website.

  • martha

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion to declare on a fashion site, but when I see stilettos heels like that it calls to mind foot binding and corsets. I get that people should wear what they like but for something so un-natural/painful to be -THE- style is just wrong.

  • kimmeister

The shoes are an abomination. The clutch color, however, is an inspired choice.

  • sweet_potato

Neither Larry or Alex are the problem. Piper is the problem, she just doesn’t want to take responsibility for her actions. And yeah, TLo, you’re on point on those shoes, yikes.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Every time I see her I can’t help but think that she’s Katy Perry with blonde hair.

I’m about half way through the series (just at the point where Piper and Alex have their first physical fling in the big house). I am still far more vested in the stories of the supporting cast members.

  • mmebam

I do think that Piper is better off as a lesbian, but not with Alex.

    • mmebam

Also, I agree that she is best single until she figures out who she is. But her lesbian self is less… Condescending? Uptight?

  • BPlease

I love Taylor’s face. There’s something so 30s movie star about her to me. (I don’t feel the same about other blondes with strong face shapes like Laura Jean Poon though). I can’t wait to watch Orange is the New Black. The outfit is great beyond the shoes.

  • miriamvines

I got stuck on your second paragraph where you say you enjoy being introduced to her work before you were introduced to her on the red carpet. It struck a chord with me bc I just watched “The Lucky One” on HBO and was amused to see “Piper” as the love interest. So I did a site search and you did post about her at those premieres! Twice in April 2012. Now, obviously I’m not saying I expected you to remember every “Pairs Division” post there is, but I did want to point it out!

As always, I love you guys. Congrats on your marriage! My aunts have been together for 25 years but still live in a state that won’t allow them to marry. And since I view you guys as the “Uncle’ version of my aunts, your nuptials give me hope that I will someday soon attend their wedding!

  • LaSylphide

Like the detailing on the dress, and it’s a great color on her. The shoes are stupid.

  • Anna Cabe

I think the dress could be a skosh longer, but the color and overall shape is amazing. Agree the shoes need to be less fussy and cheap-looking for such a simple look.

I think this love triangle is actually a realistic, better acted and characterized way of how a love triangle like say, Twilight’s, would go down. Think about it: Alex = Edward, Piper = Bella, Larry = Jacob. Alex is crazy hot with steaming chemistry with Piper but she’s also a liar and manipulator who very knowingly made the choice to be part of a drug cartel. Larry is a “Nice Guy” who’s fairly self-centered and you get the feeling that while Piper does care for him (even loves him) she settled for him, and they’re mutually using each other. It’s a toxic, codependent mess of a triangle, and they all need to separate and figure out their lives (and probably different love interests).

  • Just Me

She looks fantastic. The color on her is lovely and I really like the shoes. For me, they keep the outfit from being a bit boring.

  • halleygee

I just discovered this show yesterday and starting watching it last night – love it. I’m only through episode 3; she wants to get back with Alex, really? So wish you guys did recaps but I guess there isn’t much fashion to talk about!

  • andreawey

totally agree, about the Piper/Alex/Larry relationship issue! Alex is just a better manipulator than the rest….

  • neonseattle

she looks a LOT like katy perry in the face.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Her face reminds me of Kate Middleton. I like the dress and the shoes, but not together.

  • Charlotte Karlsen

  • reebism

PREACH IT, TLO. (Also, I ship Alex/Nicky.)

  • Imasewsure

Actually could have lived with the shoes in black even with all the frippery… pink is a bit NO though

  • Warrior89

Wow. During OITNB I kept thinking, “Why is everyone talking about how gorgeous she is?” I see it now. And am reminded why I should wear makeup and do my hair….ha.

    • librarygrrl64

Her looks are not of a type that I usually go ga-ga over (very thin, blonde, classic WASP), but she is quite lovely. They obviously have to do some work to make her look as bad as she sometimes does on the show.

  • Anniebet

It’s so nice to see this new star getting her glam on and doing the PR stuff. She’s one lucky lady to land that role, eh? She’s new to pole dancing so lets give her a few more tries at getting it right. She might not yet be aware of the power of TLo to steer a gal in the right direction, style wise… and apparently relationship wise as well.

  • Sweetvegan

Was she going for a shade of orange, to support her show? This dress is more of a coral (on my monitor), but it would’ve been really cool if she went for a total orange-orange.

  • Diego!

I’m only going to say this: Jenny McCarthy on the works

    • julnyes

What do you mean by “on the works”?

      • Diego!

LOL This damned corrector… I meant “in the way”, as if she is going to be the new Jenny, because they look alike

  • rage_on_the_page

I think the main reason I feel that Piper & Alex are “better” together is that they seem to “get” each other better. The show seems to be saying that Piper gave up who she was to settle down with Larry: that all the whirlwind adventures weren’t a whim or a phase; they’re who she truly is, and it’s her life with Larry that’s more of an act. In that way, I think she and Alex may understand each other on a deeper level, since both of them are clearly drawn to danger and adventure.

I do, however, commend the show for leaving most of the guessing up to us. Alex is a convicted felon, but she is smart and funny and caring. Larry is a stand-up guy, but he’s manipulative and self-centered and using Piper to get ahead. Piper is our heroine, but you kind of hate her sometimes. These are the kinds of characters that I love to watch: real, human characters with flaws and dimensions. Neither Alex nor Larry is perfect for Piper, and Piper is far from perfect herself.

  • Jake

She looks like a young Diane Kruger! I don’t hate the shoes as much as I hate the matchy-matchiness of it.

  • librarygrrl64

I think both relationships are effed up. LOVE the show, btw.

  • Genevieve Pearson

I love it. Y’all need to get over your aversion to matchiness, that’s older than the ‘no white after labor day’ rule. Matching is fun and it takes its own brand of skill :). And I think the shoes are adorable, and a fun pop, and excusable given the comparable simplicity of the dress.
