Selena Gomez in Vera Wang at the Getaway LA Premiere

Posted on August 27, 2013

Just one day after bestowing the coveted International WERQ Award on her, we’re afraid we must retract our love for Miss Selena at the moment. That might seem harsh but her dress is hurting our eyes and we’re just reacting instinctively, like wounded animals.

Selena Gomez attends the premiere of “Getaway” in Los Angeles in a Vera Wang dress paired with Jimmy Choo heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Way too much going on, especially in the undercarriage region.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

You know, I liked it until I got to the shoes. Boy, did she literally match the lace shoe to the exact same lace of the dress – they look custom! I like everything but what’s on her feet.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Agreed. With the exception of the shoes I kinda sorta really like this look. She is turning into an elegant, sophisticated young woman. Good on her.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

A new superhero for the younger generation: CouchGirl!

  • MilaXX

Frankendress. That looks like it was made with the scraps in the designer’s workroom. The earrings referencing the purple in the skirt was a bad idea and the (snake print? lace?) shoes were just a step too far.

  • Wow, Ms Wang can usually be relied upon to present flawlessly tasteful work. This is a horrible, overwork mish mash. no one’s dress.

    • MoHub

I’m so disappointed in Ms. Vera. I wonder if she let an assistant design this.

    • kimmeister

Yes, I blame Ms Wang entirely for having even designed it in the first place.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I remember seeing this on the runway and thinking “what the hell has Vera been snorting”. Was this maybe the leftovers?

      • Kent Roby

That’s it; Tim Gunn obviously ran into Vera’s workroom and said “You must make a dress with nothing but the scraps of fabric on the floor, and you have one hour for this challenge. MAKE IT WORK!”

  • broke&fashionable

The hair is distracting. And in the first photo she looks sleepy/possibly hungover. She is on post-VMA crash.

  • Karen Belgrad

It’s as if there was a clearance sale at Mode!

    • ballerinawithagun

Exactly! Only remnants under 1 yard available! The worst part is that lace insert and then that it was just randomly lopped off, not following the design of the lace or finishing the edge. Bad Vera!!!

  • Andrea Lentz

but her face and hair and shoessss…

  • Stella Zawistowski

The curtains open to reveal…more curtains!

    • MoHub

Pay no attention to that underskirt behind the curtain.

      • Jessica Freeman

You win. I literally lol on that one.

        • MoHub

The beauty part is that we all seem to share the same cultural references and consistently get each other’s jokes. How cool is that?

          • Jessica Freeman

            It’s a BK thing.

          • MoHub

            And it’s a good thing.

  • random_poster

Everything is wrong. I hate her eye shadow, the dress, etc. Perhaps a longer shower was needed to wipe away the effects of the previous night’s collective VMA stench.

  • Are we sure this isn’t Marchesa? I like her hair back, and it’s all better in motion, but even a hot, young, thing like Selena is not enough to save this dress.

  • Kelly

I’m really over this trend of hip pockets and poofs and flounces and what-the-hells.

The upside, I guess, is that you don’t need to bother with a clutch; just stash the trash in the weird extra hip fabric.

    • kimmeister

I’ll bet the hip flounces collect tons of crumbs. There’s probably a whole bagel in there.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

    Get away indeed

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I dunno what couches y’all are sitting on these days, but I wouldn’t even upholster a couch in that fabric. I like the idea of it, not the execution.

  • formerlyAnon

Now THIS is a dress she’s too young in appearance to wear. It takes more presence than she can project.
    Like the shoes.

    • demidaemon

I can’t see any wearer overcoming that. I don’t think it’s too young for her; I think it’s too ugly for her. At the very least, Selena wearing this might keep everyone else from wearing it, unless it becomes like the dreaded feather Gucci dress.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Yikes. Grab a pitchfork and torch! Let’s burn the dress!

  • amanda siegelson

that dress is so ugly, it hurts my feelings.
remember when vera wang was a name that meant sleek style? well, that was a long time ago apparently.

    • kimmeister

Probably before she started her (mostly terrible) line at Kohl’s.

      • amanda siegelson

i wouldn’t own this dress even if it were on a ‘take this and we’ll pay you’ table at kohl’s.

        • kimmeister

Come now, you could take the fabric and make a fabulous valance for your dollhouse window!

          • amanda siegelson

hahaha… i had not thought of that. ok! you sold me! dollhouse drapes, it is!

  • frannyprof

Looks like Princess Sustainicorn made that dress out of fabric scraps from the Mood dumpster.

    • MoHub

Except that it’s too well executed.

      • demidaemon

Yes. It misses that distinct quality of overworked and not fully thought through. It’s a fully thought design, just one that came from a very ugly thought.

  • kirkyo

Probably looks better than anyone else would in this overly busy & complicated dress.

  • Loola234

I think this might be a “Monet” dress – I saw just a thumbnail and thought it was a great floral. On my jumbotron monitor, I see issues, many, many issues (or fabrics/upholstery)…

  • sagecreek

That’s Vera Wang? Looks like a failed Project Runway assignment.

  • Sheneve Butler

The purple really kills it, but I’m not sure what could save this look.

  • AnnPopovic

I had absolutely NO opinion on this whatsoever until I read “booth babe at an upholsterer’s convention” and then I was truly full of joy that she wore the dress ’cause if she hadn’t, that sentence NEVER would’ve happened, ANYWHERE in this world and now it’s mine to pull out and laugh over whenever the need arises.

  • WintryMix

I actually LOVE the interplay between the shoes and the lace on the dress. But the dress itself is horrid and should be burned with fire.

  • siriuslover

Well, I was going to disagree with you guys and say I think she looks very cute and maybe we should blame Vera Wang on this one, but then you said “booth babe at an upholsterers’ convention.” How can anyone in their right mind disagree with you after that bit of brilliance?

Her hair and makeup is youthful and fresh.

  • mmebam

Lord, bless, it’s as if Vera Wang ran out of the black that she was going to use for the underskirt, so she picked up the first fabric she saw.

  • Jacquelyn

Random bits of leftover sofa fabric sewn together.

  • Donna Tabor

The dress is weird, but she’s working the hell out of it.

  • SugarSnap108

Head-to-toe, so wrong. That dress is so random, I’m kind of shocked it’s Vera Wang.

  • Danielle

That’s a whole lotta overworking, there, Vera.

  • “She looks like a booth babe at an upholsterer’s convention” gave me LIFE!

  • Qitkat

Tell me she hasn’t had those damn lip injections.
But the shoes fit, with no toe cleavage.

    • aahlife

Her original top lip was much thinner.

      • demidaemon

Maybe she enhanced her lips with make-up?

  • Imasewsure

Fashion hangover? Bad dress.. bad hair… bad makeup… oh yeah and the shoes are ugly

  • flamingoNW

    I don’t mind it, strangely.

  • conniemd

Let me echo comments already made? This is a Vera Wang, looks like Marchesa, way.too.much.going.on

  • TAGinMO

One of the ugliest Wangs I’ve ever seen.

    …and that’s saying something! {rim shot}

  • martha

the waist of the dress is too low on her, making the dress look droopy instead of structural as it is on the model.

  • another_laura

Bummer. See, I could have gone for this but the lace inset wrecks the dress and I hate lace shoes – and using lace shoes as a reference for a bad lace inset? kills it. pteh!

  • decormaven

I can’t get past the earrings. Bad Etsy Mod Podge hiddy jewelry. Bad stylist!

  • Constant Reader

I think I wouldn’t mind the dress if she’d left off those MOB 1987 earrings and chosen a less busy shoe.

  • librarygrrl64

I actually like the….outside of it. But it would look 100% better if the…inside of it was a solid color and not so shiny.

  • tereliz

I really want to like this dress. The silhouette is interesting, but the fabric is just too upholstery adjacent. Trying to think of what would work better and still hold that shape…

  • guest2visits

I still love it – though the earrings and the shoes are both too much for an already busy look. Nail color is a bit hard.

  • MandyM

At least she has clothes on. And no teddy bears or Robin Thicke. It may not be a great dress but that makes a win this week.

  • quiltrx

This is SO weird…I like the three textiles individually, but why on earth did they coalesce in this way?

  • Louise Bryan

For a pannier dress, it’s not too awful. Lace shoes? Give me a break.

  • Samuel Joesph Donovan

She looks like a Project Runway Auf.

  • rh33

    Thank you Mood!
