Scarlett Johansson for Harper’s Bazaar Australia Magazine

Posted on August 06, 2013

Well there you go, Scarlett. We knew you had it in you. Trust Uncle Karl to pull it out of you.

Scarlett Johannson covers the September 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar Australia magazine photographed by Karl Lagerfeld and styled by Carine Roitfeld.

Dolce&Gabbana Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss

Prada Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Gina Bock

She never quite owns her beauty, if that makes any sense. These pics are refreshingly confident and declarative. We don’t love the Prada on her but the styling’s almost beside the point. It’s the attitude and face-giving that makes this work.

Although she does look pretty great in that Dolce & Gabbana, which surprises us because she’s had some problems wearing the label in the past.

She’s giving us face & hair in both looks.

    • Jaime

…a cardigan under a gold lame dress? o.O

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And wearing a cardi under a gold leather dress is gonna be SO comfy, right?

      • gabbilevy

And yet, it’s strangely working for me, as a purely editorial piece.

        • drdarke

I’m with @gabbilevy – this outfit isn’t anything a human would wear outside of a fashion spread, but it oddly works here.

And I LOVE TLo’s comment about Johansson being reluctant to own her beauty….

      • calimon

I find it a bit of a needle scratch. But as TLo points out, she’s really workin’ it, so it seems less offensive to me.

    • flamingoNW

I don’t love the Prada on anybody. What an ugly dress.

    • berkeleygirl

Just a guess – maybe she never fully owns it out of fear that she’ll be seen as too much of a bombshell… If she reminds me of anyone, it’s Uma Thurman – another woman ridiculously ripe in both face and body, but is careful never to oversell it.

      • filmcricket

Uma’s got the advantage of height. She can pull off the angry Duchess thing that she’s been doing lately because the height makes her regal. ScarJo is indeed luscious, but there’s nothing regal about her.

    • barbarienne

I wonder if she can hire someone to walk around in front of her carrying a portable fan.

      • gabbilevy

She just needs to borrow Solange’s wind machine.

        • drdarke

Or work in Bollywood, where stunningly beautiful women ALL come with their own wind machines, @gabbilevy!

    • Chartreusite

She is serving hair AND face. As a long time ScarJo fan, all I can say is go and get it, girl!

    • 3boysful

Showing my age, but the cover shot is reminiscent of Barbara Eden doing a Jeannie “boink.”

That Prada is so hiddy I will not be buying it this season. ;)

      • drdarke

::snicker!:: Yeah, but I bet she doesn’t call ANY guy “Master”, @3boysfull!

Blinks them out of her sight forever, yes….

      • ankali

I too shall boycott Prada this season. In solidarity.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She finally looks like a goddess, I don’t know why it took so long. I’ve always loved her, so I’m super glad she’s owning herself.

    • http://www.tweevalleyhigh.com/ Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

She looks like a high-fashion genie.

    • SugarSnap108

Eh. I guess I’m missing something. I just see the standard, open-lipped “I am somewhat angry about what you just said to me” expression. In both shots. Man, that Prada piece is just awful.

      • filmcricket

Agreed. It’s not that she looks *bad* per se, but compared to the attitude the models are giving, ScarJo’s just a blank.

She should wear more blue and gold, though, if the cover’s any indication.

        • mlle

I think the D&G model is working the dress better than her, but she edges out the Prada model since at least she doesn’t look mad that the stylists forgot to blow her hair out.

          • ankali

Agreed, but dude, can you blame that model?

        • SugarSnap108

Yes, those colors do look great on her.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Same here. Serving face? Sure. But not a great one. And she’s not reached Beyonce levels of fan working. I see contrived constipation.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

I’m with you guys – to me, the look is “pretend like you are not here”…I don’t know if I’ve seen or can recall “Owning her beauty” but I KNOW I’ve seen her own her “sexy” and looked better than these shots… IMO.

    • Glam Dixie

She looks incredibly beautiful. That Prada dress is distractingly hideous.

    • Sobaika

      I cackled – isn’t she the face of D&G?

At any rate, she looks fab on the cover. I’d love to see her in more saturated hues.

      • Kristin McNamara

I think the face of D&G should be the notorious botched version of the face on that dress.

    • Nikko Viquiera

This is why everyone needs a mobile fan to follow them around everywhere they go. Imagine entering a McDonald’s with your hair blowing around like that. Drama!

    • decormaven

She was meant to wear that D&G. While not a Prada-phile, I appreciate how she is working the look.

    • rivula

That D&G collection was perfected by Katy Perry at the Met Gala. No one can do Theodora again.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

I’m pretty in love with the cover shot.

    • Jen

I saw the prada shot and was dismayed by the styling, and then scrolled down and saw the runway version…. uck.

    • nowlo

It’s probably just me, but I could barely recognize her on that cover. I think they overdid the Photoshopping a bit.

    • Barbara Affolter

Did Uncle Karl pull it out of her mouth?

      Sex doll face is gross.

    • marlie

Best photoshoot of her in a LONG time (though the Prada dress is ugly).

    • NYCGlamourpuss

That cover is amazeballs! The hair, the face, the Dolce! Gorgeous!

    • calimon

Would jewelry have undermined these looks?

    • Not applicable

Grey sweater and gold lamme?? Yiiikkes

    • Shawn EH

It’s the shape of the D&G dress that works on her; she could always do that hourglass figure silhouette.

    • Bethany Roullett

I still kind of want to be her when I grow up. It’s totally beside the point that I’m older than she is.

    • María José Benites Peralta

ScarJo looks great in the Dolce dress, and surprisingly makes that awful Prada dress work.

    • sekushinonyanko

I think it’s because it’s rare for lace dresses of any kind to look good. Not to mention, they require looking sweet and twee, else you hit matronly mother of the bride. And she doesn’t look girlish, she looks like a woman.

    • alyce1213

I hate that D&G collection with a passion. It brings to mind the ruined fresco in Spain last year.

      The Prada is also ugly.

    • clairellis

I’m not seeing face in these pictures. Well not a different face. The same face. She is pretty but it’s the same face.

    • ankali

God, I love this D&G collection. Editorial, beautiful, candylicious.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Didn’t we see this dress on someone else, or was it just similar? I think Scarlett own is it. I think she’s confident, and she has every reason to feel confident.

    • j_anson

Ugh, I love ScarJo and I think SHE’S beautiful in these, but that Prada is AWFUL. It looks like a generic Ren Faire wench dress done in gold pleather.

    • desi_girl

I’ve had a lot of Prada outfits and shoes in their recent collections. Something’s wrong with that label!

    • deelup

Digging the styling. But she always has her mouth open like a fricking live blow up doll.
