Rosario Dawson in DKNY at the 2013 US Open Kick-Off Party

Posted on August 27, 2013

Sometimes a simple dress needs a little something to finish it off. Now, we’re not fancy design professors with our book learnin’ and everything, but we believe the term fashion people use is “accessorizing.”

Rosario Dawson attends the 2013 US Open Kick-Off Party in New York City in a DKNY Fall 2013 dress.

We think this dress really works for her and for the event. It’s simple, striking, and sporty. But those shoes feel 100 percent wrong here and we would have loved jewelry that felt more like a statement than these pieces.  It’s like the jewelry and shoes belong with a more formal, more night time outfit than this. And we’re sorry to say that her hair is really not growing in all that great. Although we sympathize on that one. Sometimes, you’ve just got to grit your teeth and wait it out. Maybe a head scarf or big floppy hat for a little while, dear? Think about it.

Sorry but that dress is not doing her any favors in the waist. She looks like a pilar. It should be a little bit tighter imho!

  • Sobaika

Wrong shoes, and the way she’s standing doesn’t help. There’s not much you can do with the hair, but at least brush it.

    • Rand Ortega

They might hurt. That’s what’s I’m getting from that pose.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

Could have used some emerald jewelry. And different shoes.

  • kimmeister

She definitely needed a long, metallic necklace to break up that column of orange.

  • nannypoo

The only thing I like here is the dress. The hair problem is partly the result of her own bad choice, but it’s actually the side that she didn’t shave that looks crappy. And she needs more makeup. She looks like she just rolled out of bed, put on whatever was laying on the chair, and came to this event.

  • Introspective

would a belt have helped at the waist? all i know is she needs something to break up that orange cylinder effect.

    • Imasewsure

I don’t think a belt would work since it’s supposed to be sort of a column which is why accessorizing in some way (any way!) could have saved this…

  • Rand Ortega

Love the dress, but the shoes are taking all the fun out of the look. A sandal, espadrille or even a wedge sneaker would be better for the look.

    • MilaXX

I like the idea of a wooden look sandal or an espadrille for footwear and a headwrap for the head.

      • Rand Ortega

Yes. Printed headwrap would’ve made the look more playful, the wood sandal giving a beachy feel. Well done, MilaXX. Your stylist instincts are perfection!

I love her so much, but this is not her best self. Makeup could have nailed it, along with some fuck-off turquoise jewellery.

  • Bexxx

Team belt. Go belt go. Roll belt. Belt nation.

    • Bexxx

      (it’s almost football season!)

    • imspinningaround

      War damn belt.

      • Bexxx

I like the spirit of your comment, not the views it represents. (cough, cough, RMFT, cough)

  • hughman

This is how your lesbian sister who swears she never wears a dress gets fancied up for your cousin’s wedding. She then ditches her shoes under the table during dinner and does the Chicken Dance barefoot with Grandpa Bill who keeps asking when she’s gonna have kids.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

The best accessory she could have gotten is a hairbrush!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Love love love the color. And the shape is OK – shows off her great legs!! But as you say – the hair is a big ol’ mess and the shoe is wrong. A naked gold sandal maybe??

  • alyce1213

Ugh. That haircut is a huge mistake. What was she thinking?

    • flamingoNW

a role, maybe? It’s an absolutely awful cut with no redeeming value whatsoever, even originally

  • flamingoNW

The problem I have with the dress is the cut of the top. It’s very schlumpy and unflattering. I like the bottom. Don’t mind the shoes. The hair is tragic.

  • teensmom99

    Love the dress.

  • elemspbee

Thank you for posting this. For exactly a year now, I have been going back and forth about shaving my hair like she has it here (we have similar hair–wavy). Seeing picture has made me see the light. My girlfriend will be so happy that I’ll be getting off this slow train!

  • Imasewsure

Really like this take on a simple sheath dress but everything else is awful. I’d even take an Eva Mendes headscarf over her nothing hairstyle.

    Too fancy Flinstones.

  • kirkyo

Is she glittery? Did someone throw glitter cuz it looks like it’s all over the carpet too.

  • tereliz

A long necklace with a cool pendant, edgier earrings that you can actually SEE, and gold strappy sandals. Coulda been a WERQ if she’d worked around the dress and bracelet. Necklace and sandals really could have changed the proportions here. Her current shoes and earrings are WAY too traditional for this dress.

  • MilaXX

Agree about the shoes and the bracelet. They don’t go at all. The dress is cute and could carried a nice, ethnic print turban or headwrap.

  • Glam Dixie

The carpet under her looks like she dumped glitter out of her lady parts. That’s a whole ‘nother level of awesome. Don’t like the dress tho.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Dress is perfect for a big, intricate necklace…where is it?

    • conniemd

Yep, my thought exactly. Some big necklace to cover a great deal of the neck area because it’s too blah. I kinda picture some Indian design look.

  • demidaemon

I think this dress is pretty dumpy and the color is all wrong for her. She needed something a bit more saturated.

  • BeeBeauNYC

    A belt – girlfriend needed a belt!

  • quiltrx

Looks like she remembered at the last minute that she had to be there.

  • SM

A turban would make this shit amazing. BRING BACK TURBANS HOLLYWOOD!

  • marlie

I’m not a fan of the shapelessness on her. The shoes are all wrong, and she needs a statement necklace or something.

  • Louise Bryan

A floppy hat, or a chic head scarf (do such things exist?), or maybe just cut it all off and go pixie for awhile.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Something in her hair – a scarf or adornment of some sort – would have really complemented the outfit and hid her grow-out. A necklace would have complemented her cute dress too. sigh…missed opportunity.

  • H2olovngrl

    Sandals, dammit!

  • Kent Roby

It sorta fascinates me that Rosario will often make appearances like this where she looks rather ordinary or plain (yes, pretty, but in a quiet, unassuming way), though she apparently has a KILLER body (evidenced in the movie version of Rent, and some movie I just watched where she got revenge on her rapist). I agree that she absolutely needs accessories here, but maybe she’s overcompensating at times to be considered A Serious Actress?

  • andreawey

color is all wrong for her, makes her skin look kind of orangey….. she is so beautiful and has such striking features, a little like Angelina Jolie, yet she always looks less than what she could
