Rachel McAdams in Roksanda Illincic at the “About Time” Premiere

Posted on August 09, 2013

This merited a semi-surprised “Oh” from us before we could stop it. And that’s a good thing, right? It’s not like we followed it up with a concerned and condescending “… DEAR.” It’s just that the look was kind of declarative and unexpected and we responded. So, points for that, Rachel.

Rachel McAdams attends the “About Time” premiere in London in a Roksanda Illincic top, skirt, and belt paired with Casadei Pumps and Norman Silverman earrings.

Roksanda Illincic Resort 2014 Collection

But we’re leaning toward not supporting this one. First off, that belt is really awful and distracting. It turns a highly dramatic gown into something from a child’s dress-up box. It’s clumsy and focus-pulling and you’d need to be a size 0 for it to look good on you. And it’s a shame, because we like the idea of this look. We like a dramatic non-bridal white gown with these coolly futuristic strips of color on the back. We like the idea of shoulderpads here. But the fit is truly bad throughout and you can’t half-ass such things when you’re wearing a dress like this. The fit has to be impeccable here. It could’ve been a real head-turner, but the best it can manage is a chorus of “Oh”s, we’re thinking.

And all I see is Princess Leia. (I’m also hearing the Imperial March as well.)

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I thought that was just because I’m the mother of a Star Wars fanatic.

        • purpleprose78

I am a Star Wars fanatic as well, but I don’t think that is why we think that.

      • Sarah Winningham

The least she could have done is amuse us by also having Princess Leia hair.

        • purpleprose78

          Agreed.

    • Lori

Wow, the bra & fit issues on the bodice are really bad. How did no one see how bad that is? And the belt is horrid. This could have been really good, but it’s not.

      • MoHub

When you can tell that a woman is wearing and underwired t-shirt bra from the outside, something is dreadfully wrong.

      • AnaRoW

I’m pretty sure it’s the same belt the model’s wearing. It looks great in a studio setting but on Rachel it’s reflecting the red carpet, giving it a multicolor hue. The poor fit of the dress isn’t helping matters.

        • Kristin McNamara

Oh wow. I did NOT realize that that was a metallic belt just reflecting the red carpet. That belt, together with the sea foam green stripe going down her backside, made me think maybe Lisa Frank had designed a pastel/Easter line of accessories and I’d missed it.

    • Danielle

      That belt is dreadful.

    • GorgeousThings

And adding insult to injury, her underwires are upstaging the rest of her.

      • decormaven

The stylist should be swatted for that. Totally ruins the drape of the dress in that area.

    • http://www.tweevalleyhigh.com/ Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

I was distracted by how amazing her hair looks.

    • Breatheinthegood

Plus she has on the wrong foundation garments- you shouldn’t be able to see the underwire in her bra. I love her hair this color though.

    • Karen Belgrad

I know so few celebs actually wear bras on the red carpet, but it’s so bizarre to actually be able to see her underwire!

    • NinaBoo

It’s never a good sign when we can see your underwire, dearie.

    • Cameron Turner

We can see your underwire dearest……

    • Sarah

I’d like to see somebody swanning around in that at any resort I’ve ever been to. Really.

    • SewingSiren

The needs a less obvious bra, but other than that she looks great.

    • iheartbuffy

she needs like another 6 inches of torso for this to fit night. Leave it to Nicole, Blanchett, or *god-forbid* Gywnie…. assuming they ditched the belt

    • kim bunchalastnames

i said “oh!” when i saw the red hair. what a GREAT color for her.

    • Jennifer Bober

Oh, this could have been so amazing if the fit were correct. The excess fabric just makes it look a mess. What a shame. It could have been so incredible. The belt doesn’t bother me on the model, only on her, because it emphasizes the fit issues.

    • Nicholas

The belt looks like something that would give a person superpowers.

      • iheartbuffy

        what would they be?

        • majorbedhead

Hopefully, the power to hide undergarments on a fitted gown.

        • MilaXX

The power to bore someone to death with a look

    • Emily

Echoing the other BKs, a bra fitting is in order. You should never be able to see your underwire.

    • MartyBellerMask

      Holy Hanger Bumps.

    • VioletFem

Her red hair is so pretty! I hope she keeps this color. Shame, about the dress. I can see why she liked it, but it does not fit her well literally and stylistically. She should pack it and send it to Tilda.

    • MilaXX

Looks like bad cosplay from Comic Con

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Honey, Tilda wants her dress back and to speak with you about underwear.

    • Kate

      Well…her one shoe is nice…

    • mlle

This needs to be fitted better and worn with a different belt (I think it needs a belt of some sort, though).

    • MissMariRose

I’m going to focus on the positive here and applaud her for wearing a bra in the first place. I also like the fact that she wore it as underwear, not as a top.

      • Heather

Also, no visible UPLs! (unsightly panty lines)

    • Tatiana Luján

I LOVE how the red hair suits her.

    • hellkell

If your underwires are showing, go change.

      • Adelaidey

There is a photo of me from my college days in a top so ill-fitting that you can see the underwire of my bra. I cringe when I think of it. I’m having a shame flashback now.

    • GillianHolroyd

I’m wondering if the bra was fitted into the dress; it’s so odd to see the underwire casing. The too-long sleeves and droopy shoulder seams are distracting as well.

      Mood belts!?!

      • Jackie4g

I agree. Those too long sleeves are throwing everything else off, including the shoulder pads. The excess fabric seems to be travelling up her arms all the way to the shoulder region!

    • Ruth Preston

At first glance, I thought, “What’s Reba McIntyre doing on TLo?” I like that hair color on her, but the style is giving me A Sad. The belt defies explanation and the back of the skirt looks like a maxipad.

    • Sweetvegan

The bodice and back waist length are too long. Look at all the fabric just pooling on top of the belt, and how it looks completely different on the model. The sleeves are also too long.

      • filmcricket

The fit is appalling. Too long in the waist and sleeves, too tight across the bust and hips. And honestly I think she’s too tiny to pull this off anyway, this requires – as others have said – a Tilda, a Cate, maybe even an Uma or Gwyneth. I give her kudos for wanting to do something different, but this is … not good.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

A giant of a woman is required here. Is Solange tall enough?

    • MaggieMae

THAT is a tough dress to pull off. Points for trying!

Guesses on what the fabric is?

    • SugarSnap108

I have a book on how to make clothes out of old T-shirts. It features a wedding dress made of Hanes. It is very similar to this dress.

    • Little_Olive

Also, the fit on her buttocks is… weird. And to think it could have been so good.

      • 3boysful

Not to mention that I believe we’re seeing the outline of her underwire bra??

    • Erica_Vuitton

It’s both too big and too small at the same time. Nice effort but the hair makes her look like Anna Kendrick.

    • Rand Ortega

      Hmm…uh…interesting.

    • crash1212

I’m giving this to her just because she gave it a valiant effort. And, I love, love, luuuurrrve this dress. It is a chic thing of beauty. If the fit had been better, this would’ve been a WERQ for me…even with that odd belt.

    • Jaeda Laurez

At least she went back to red hair…so there’s that.

    • marlie

I *want* to love this, but it requires a number of tweaks to be perfect.

    • Lola Channing

yes there is the training bra issue but otherwise it’s lovely. A size 0? Really? C’mon guys. She IS a size 0. Or at least close.

    • appliquer

It is too big for her. The sleeves are too long and she had to resort to clumpy shoes to keep it from dragging on the floor.

    • Trisha26

I’ll just say it “Oh dear.”

    • stubbornthoughts

Ah, this is SO close. I agree, the fit here is troublesome with that belt. The dress doesn’t have the same impact when the belt forces it to bunch. I also think, and hate myself for saying this, this dress would be better off on someone with little to no ass. Ms. Rachel here was blessed with a wonderful rump that this dress isn’t used to – IMO.

    • Ozski

Yeah, she looks like she is on ‘Logan’s Run’. Also, not a fan of that hair color. Stick to blonde or brunette, Rachel..

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

What everyone said about the dress, and this continues my Jodie Foster rant from yesterday. What the **** is up with unwashed hair with visible roots??? You’re an A-list actress, don’t you have some feeps who can run to the drug store and get a root wand before you leave the hotel? Jesus H. Christ on a cracker!

    • formerlyAnon

Fit. It doesn’t fit well across the chest. Too long neck to waist, which is showcased by the belt. I DO like this, but it needed to be custom fit on her.

    • MzzPants

Terrible fit. Plus…an underwire is not the bra for that fabric. Sometimes I’m stunned by the lack of attention to detail. So much money wasted to look like shit.

    • littlemac8

Such a cute smile! I am so glad she brought back the red hair; it is so much more flattering with her skin tone. BUT, take care of your roots please and style it differently. It looks fried and unhealthy. i know people are just so relieved she got rid of the blonde, but she still has some work to do!

    • Reality TV Casting

omg SO close. but at least she’s fixed her hari color and make-up so that her bone-structure is finally at movie star level

    • neonseattle

yeah this doesn’t fit her well. but i think she looks great. the hair with her skintone and that crazy belt does something for me. she’s radiating.

    • Diego!

I luv HUH!!! But Rachel, honey, this is AWFUL. Even your hair is orange! What is going on? Tell uncle Diego :)

    • ringthing

omg, this girl is so talented and pretty but her hair looks worse every time I see a picture of her. she started out brunette and that’s how she looks best, imo. this….thing…on top of her head is so distracting I can hardly see the dress.

    • charlotte

      Cyborg wedding dress.

    • Imasewsure

I think with the belt it could be ok as a short dress… as a long dress it needs to be on a more naturally dramatic ladystar… very Princess Leia as mentioned by other BKs

    • joanna dash

It’s ridiculously tight and yet also too long, in the arms. Her arms look like chubby sausages, which is ridiculous, they are not. It’s a terrible dress that can be worn by no one except a model.

      • omg_dora

I disagree — it must have looked iffy on the model as well if they had to photoshop it this much. It doesn’t look smooth and well-fitting in the model picture, it looks like a drawing.

    • omg_dora

I’m sure the fabric is really silk blended with unicorn fur or whatever, but it looks like swimsuit spandex.

      • DuBey2

Unicorn fur! From Timothy’s prize that he won his last night on PR!

    • Crystal

I’m just glad she’s not super blonde anymore.

    • d4divine

These children need to take a note from Oprah and start buying their own clothes. The fit of this dress is tragic and it screams ” I am borrowed!!” She looks a mess.

    • PeggyOC

And the hair. Oh sweet Jebus, the hair. I’m glad she’s gone from that terrible bleached blond, but now she’s got cocker spaniel hair with roots in a flat, drugstore looking red. The red is a great idea, but a terrible implementation.

    • guest2visits

She’s so pretty but the dress is just boring and she’s on the verge of getting lost in it.

    • PeaceBang

      Those unforgiveable shoes.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I hate the dress. But she is SO PRETTY. Who else has a smile that lights everything up like that?

    • jencapture

Mail this dress to Zoe Saldana, stat.

    • quiltrx

That fabric is really awful, and no one’s friend. When I can see the ENTIRE framework of your bra, and your shoulder pads, and the fact that you have a smooth bottom…well, the damned fabric is TOO CLINGY.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Pack that dress up and send it to Tilda.

    • kimiakay

I almost can’t believe what a mess this is. It has potential, damn it. But jesuschrist, that bra! You could probably go out and buy her an exact replacement just by looking at this picture! It could be such a original look, but those horrible shoes, her messy hair with dark roots, and the sleeves and hem being too long, pick one, or pick them all. No go here.

    • mickiemonkey

      Toothpaste for Halloween dress.

    • kathrineb

I like the hair but not loving the look

    • Lola Channing

I got that. You said Ms. McAdams would need to be a size 0 (or anybody wearing it) for the gown to look good. And yes, I do read what you write.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Actually, we said – of the belt only – “you need to be a size 0 for it to look good on you.” Your version makes it sound like we were criticizing Rachel specifically when that’s clearly not the case.
