Jessica Lange & Frances Conroy on the Set of “American Horror Story”

Posted on August 06, 2013

Oh man, the costuming for this season is going to be INSANE, isn’t it?

Frances Conroy and Jessica Lange films scenes for “American Horror Story” at a mansion in the Garden District of New Orleans, Louisiana.

O to the MG, you guys. This is going to be ridiculous – in the best sense of the word.  They look like fashion editor-witches. Which should really be a thing, now that we think about it.

So, is this season going to be Bewitched mixed with Absolutely Fabulous?

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

What if Vogue was ruled by witches. Oh, wait…

    • drdarke

Now WTF don’t the major networks put on a show like THAT, @RussellH88?

I would watch that show faithfully…..

      • jjtxgrrl

American horror story just COULDNT be on network TV!! Its waaay too twisted!

Which is why its perfect where it is. Thanks FX for scaring the crap out ta me!!

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      I’d watch it.

      • Rand Ortega

        Watch it? I’d marry it.

    • I may have to start watching that!

      • Rhonda Shore

        me too!

    • H2olovngrl

AbFab was my first thought. Jessica is obviously Patsy.

  • HVM

I want those sunglasses and Jessica’s dress.

  • VioletFem

Honestly, if these pictures were not captioned I would have assumed that Frances McCoy WAS Grace Coddington

  • I want to see this season more than ever now! Anna Wintour, as head of the Coven.

  • marlie

I think I said it with the last AHS post, but… I. CAN’T. WAIT.

  • PeaceBang

    Bitter Kittens, start your DVRs.

  • andreawey

Freakin’ awesome!!! Can’t wait! Jessica looks amazing, I’ve always thought she was underrated as an actor, she really is a chameleon.

  • imakeart

Can you imagine wearing all those clothes in New Orleans in August? Ick.

    • tereliz

If it’s 105 outside, it’s 65 everywhere you go inside. I’m writing this from beneath a blanket, lol.

    • MichaelStrangeways

LOL…I was thinking the same thing. Poor Ms Conroy. She has to be DYING in those heavy clothes/wig.

      • Wayne Alan Blood

That may not be a wig, her hair is that red. It just looks like someone went a little crazy with the crimping iron.

  • MilaXX

Should be interesting. I’m almost looking forward to it.

  • gsk241

I can hardly wait for the new season!

I want to love these pictures and the style they represent, but all I can think of is the 106F heat index in NO today.

  • zenobar

“You wake up one day and your baby’s stolen a foot.”

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I read that it is going to have some comedy elements in addition to the horror. It supposedly takes place in both in the 1800s and today, in New Orleans. It’s a battle between the “real” Salem witches (who escaped before the witch trials and made their way to Nola) and the voodoo witches from the swamps and bayous. With that cast, It sounds fucking delicious!!!!!!!!

    • Settled, I am there.

    • tereliz

Yeah, I’m really looking forward to this season, but like everything set in NOLA or with a historical bent, I will be unable to watch without half my brain picking EVERYTHING apart. (I work in a museum. In the French Quarter. Picking apart historical/nola things is my super-power. It’s a blessing and a curse.) Maybe the witches hitched a ride south with the Acadians? No, wait, I think there’s a 70 year time discrepancy there. See, I even ruin my own fun. 😉

That said, Frances Conroy looks amazeballs. Remember how Petunia Dursley was Marnie the coven leader on True Blood and she dressed a little weird? Yeah. Marnie ain’t got shit on Frances-Coddington-Conroy right now. Is that a scorpion brooch at her throat? I love her shoes, too!

      • Kent Roby

I got a little nervous when I heard that the show will mix in some New Orleans history (Marie Laveau, etc), but I will still watch it because (1) Jessica Freaking Lange, duh!, (2) last season was so awesome, (3) the costuming is just too much fun, and (4) the show likes to feature cute butts!

  • Eric Stott

LOVING it! Something tells me this season will have tongue firmly in cheek…until it gets ripped out in a bloody mess

  • Shawn EH

Is Jessica Lange the Agnes Moorhead of this generation?

  • Rand Ortega

Just think– Vivienne Westwood & Lauren Hutton as witches. Casting spells on Carine Roitfeld & Nuclear Wintour to make them style women under 5’6″ & weigh more than 110 pounds.

  • hellkell

Where can I get those embroidered boots Ms. Conroy is wearing?

I feel bad for them in those getups in summer–it’s hot as hell in NOLA right now.

    • janierainie

The first thing that came to my mind. It’s so HUMID there! Makes me have the vapors just thinking about it.

    • Sarah Winningham

Turkish import store, the one in Columbus, Ohio has a wide range of embroidered boots, sneakers and slippers exactly like Ms. Conroy’s.

      • hellkell

Dang, I’m about as far from there as you can get, but I’ll keep my eyes open! Thanks!

        • Sarah Winningham

Google Turkish Embroidered Boots and all kinds of shopping links come up.

          • Linda LaPaz

They appear to be Suzani Hand Embroidered Boots. $295 online.

    • tessasouthworth

Check Etsy and eBay, searching for “Suzani Boots.” You’ll find quite a selection, very reasonably priced, starting at less than $150. Suzani is the name of the embroidery technique, which is very popular in Central Asia. Back in the day, when I spent my junior year studying in the Soviet Union, I bought piles of Suzani linens and wall hangings in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) where I was living, and after the school year ended when we traveled across the country, making stops in Uzbekistan & Tajikistan. The amount of detail and the richness of color that goes into each piece is astonishing. What I didn’t give away when I got home, I kept, and they have held up amazingly 30+ years later. If you are interested in Suzani linens/wall hangings/fabrics, they also are available on Etsy & eBay.

  • jjtxgrrl

    I can’t wait!!!

  • bertkeeter

    Extras from Harry Potter?

  • This is gonna redefine cray, and I hope that cape is big enough to have an air conditioner stationed under it. I nearly fainted just looking at those clothes.

  • Onika K Morris-Alleyne

They look like Patsy and Eddie. Amazurrrrrr

  • RebeccaKW

I kind of want to crimp my hair now.

  • crash1212

Not sure what the hell is going on with Francis, but I love Jessica’s dress – it would be perfect without the collar. I don’t watch this show, but just might start…for the fashion!

  • CeeQ

    “fashion editor-witches”

I’m sure there’s a fashion faculty tucked away somewhere in Hogwarts.

Presided over by Madame Tabitha Snicklehorn and Professor Randolph Elmsworth. Both have a penchant for plaid & stripes, believing that if you’re going to be out of the ordinary magical folk, your fashion may as well clash too. They regularly bemoan the wide spread conventional black for witches & wizards who want to be taken seriously and were oft to be overheard sighing: “I would give my eye teeth to see someone show up at the Hogwarts Annual Alumni Luncheon in ruby slippers. Where HAVE the risk taking witches and wizards gone?!?”

    • MikeW_Vegas

Sort of a Wizardly version of Stacey London and Clinton Kelly.. 🙂

    • demidaemon

      This sounds awesome!

  • suzinrva

    Grace Coddington-esque? Vogue bitchy witchy?

    • bellafigura1

That’s got to be on purpose.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Is that… is that a lifesize scorpion brooch on Frances Conroy? Sooooo freakin’ cool. I want it.

  • YoungSally

Lord – I thought that first photo was Florence (or a drag impersonator)….and not in a good way.

  • Isabel

The house is on 1410 Jackson Ave. It started as a mansion, became Soule Business College, and is now a single family home again. Do a Google Maps streetview to see better details of the gate and the red paint or mold thing on the bottom part of the fence.

I was standing outside today in another part of the city (closer to Lake Pontchartrain), which is cooler than the Garden District, looking at the PODS guy dump a container on the driveway. I was under a tree, not moving. I was drenched by the time I went back inside.

I feel for Francis in the cape. I hope that she is well hydrated and doesn’t faint.

    • KudzuJulep

🙁 I used to live only a few blocks away on St. Andrew. Great, now I miss NOLA (but not enough to endure another August in that heat!).

  • nannypoo

Fabulous. Cannot wait. I hope they don’t make it so scary it’s unwatchable.

  • ankali

No, I really am getting ridiculously giddy with every single dribble of information that’s released. This is going to be so fucking good.

  • DamH

Better than most of the editorials in present magazine, most likely it’s those witches are working it .

  • quiltrx

Jessica’s dress and shades are too awesome.
And I think I could out-do that comforter cape. (it actually looks A LOT like it’s made out of some couch covers we have that protect them from doggy toes.)

  • julnyes

I think I might have to start watching this show. TLo and the BKs are wearing me down.

  • EEKstl

    Obsessed. Can’t wait.

  • pattie capet

this looks like preparation for an editorial shoot way more than a tv show. i haven’t been watching this show but could get behind the shoot.

  • Adriana_Paula

Someone, anyone, where are Ms. Conroy’s T-straps from?!? If they come in green, I will purchase the bejesus out of them.

  • Akemi

Frances Conroy’s hair reminds me of Johnny Depp’s hair in that terrible Willy Wonka remake. But I don’t care, I am so stoked for the new series!

  • GinAndPopcorn

I just saw the first promo for the new season. It’s only about 15 seconds but still all kinds of creepy. I’d post a link but I don’t want to end up in moderation purgatory. A web search on American Horror Story should take you right to a selection of links to it.

  • NinjaCate

Frances is giving some SERIOUS Grace Coddington in those shots.

  • Tina Power

Saw the first pic and thought this was going to be a thing about Vivien Westwood.

  • ailujailuj

OF COURSE the ladies are in N.O…. in the garden district. Couldn’t have been paired more perfectly. I hate waiting.

  • Leslie Amanda Courreges

Aggggghhhhh!!!! Most of that stuff came from my store! I am so freaking excited!
