Ne-Yo at Next Big YouTube Star Event

Posted on August 30, 2013

In the interests of providing you the widest array of sausage for your Sausage Friday, and after featuring the meat head, the hipster (both east and west coast reprezenting), the jock, the weirdo, the clown, and the Euro/alterna-dudes, it’s time for a little bit of classic hip hop style on the red carpet, wouldn’t you say?

Ne-Yo attends Crown Music’s Next Big YouTube Star Announcement at Studio 450 in New York City.

It’s a sad, TGI Fridays kind of red carpet at a particularly sad event, but we salute you, Ne-Yo, because you put the effort in on a look. It’s not our look (obvs), but it’s a well-styled, totally put together look. We also salute your ability to wear that hat. Most of us couldn’t get away with it.

Is he getting away with it? We’re asking.

That shirt is a touch too shiny. But… for who he is and what the event is, yes, he gets away with it. Granted, I say that as a white Southern woman who listens to Classical music, but, what else are Bitter Kittens supposed to do other than render judgement?

  • kimmeister

I think he is getting away with it. I’m dubious about the shirt button all the way to the top though. His little smirk reminds me of LL Cool J.

    • His little smirk reminded me of Sammy Davis, Jr. It’s a generational thing.

  • jmorino08

    neck beard.

  • RL McGruder

He’s getting away with it. He is NOT getting away with that neck beard.

  • Absolutely, he is.
Variety is the key to my happiness. Especially variety in sausages. I do love a sampler platter.

  • marlie

I guess he’s getting away with the hat as much as anyone can, but I think it’s too small. The rest of the look is nice, and I love the Chuck Taylors, but he doesn’t really flat my boat. And he needs to shave his neck.

  • Zaftiguana

You know, i think he is. It’s something about the really crisp hat and the precision of the angle at which it’s sitting on his head. And the way it ties into a really pulled-together monochromatic color scheme in the whole outfit.

  • clairellis

It’s Ne-Yo, he pulls it off just by being Ne-Yo!

  • ErmengardeGreen

I think he’s getting away with the hat, but maybe not the shades.

    • smayer

Agree. Those shades do not compliment his facial shape whatsoever.

  • Denise Alden

He’s not getting away with the lower chain. Otherwise, delicious.

  • MilaXX

I like his singing, but he doesn’t ever have to talk again as far as I’m concerned. I’m still low key annoyed at his corny instagram break up with his baby mama/fiance.

    • formerlyAnon

That instagram thing was not the act of a man over 30 with ANY shred of self awareness or common sense. I seriously thought someone was mocking him till the friend who’d retweeted it assured me repeatedly that it was for real.

  • Sobaika

He looks good, but he is capable of much better.

I guess anything else at this sort of event would have been overkill.

  • He is. It doesn’t look like it shrunk in the rain on the way over so I’m calling it good.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

THAT is how you do baggy jeans. This is not “swag”, this is true, old school hip hop, and he is doing it so well even this fat, middle aged white boy is jealous. Lose the gold and swap out the headgear for a baseball cap and I might be inspired to stop eating ice cream for dinner.

  • Glam Dixie

HATE the stupid hat. Shave the neck, the rest is fine. Please can’t we burn all of those stupid hipster hats?

    • AnaRoW

I recently found out that he’s going bald. I guess he just hasn’t gotten to the point yet where he’s willing to go out with a shaved head. LL Cool J went through a similar experience.

      • Imasewsure

He’s been rocking those hipster Frankie/Sammy/Dino hats for years. Bald is good too though!

  • conniemd

Love the hat. Love men in hats. – Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, Matt Bomer.

  • somebody blonde

He is pulling off the hat.

  • Nicole Walraven

the hat and the glasses together is maybe a bit much. but he looks pretty damn sharp.

  • Rand Ortega

He’s hip hop ATL cool. It works for him.

  • BAM. He’s getting so away with it. Stylin’!

  • fursa_saida

I hate his last big single (that I know of? Has there been another big one since “Let Me Love You”?) so completely and violently that it’s extended to him personally. So he’s barely getting away with existing, for me.

  • Ooh! Shiny! He’s getting away with it. But the shirt’s so shiny.

  • MoHub

Surprisingly, I find I like it—except for the neckchain.

  • Poeta Paz

Too many accessories. Take one one off (or two).

  • formerlyAnon

I vote getting away with it! And looking very good.

Though my opinion’s of dubious value. Being a middle aged white woman whose knowledge of current hip hop is heavily filtered through the tastes & opinions of my younger friends and relatives,

  • Jeff Warhurst

I find the whole look cheesy.

  • Daktari100

Looks like a Run DMC Halloween costume. it did make me laugh though!

  • Dan_In_NYC

It’s not a style with which I have enough context to adequately evaluate. I can just say it would definitely be better if the neck beard were cleaned up.

  • dschubba

I’m not much of a fan of his, but I can definitely get down with this. He’s Friday-era Ice Cube on top and mid-90s Snoop on the bottom. Not even that mid-80s, baldness denial-era Phil Collins fedora can ruin it.
