MTV VMAs IN or OUT: Holland Roden in Naeem Khan

Posted on August 26, 2013

Darlings, isn’t it well past time for hostess pants to come back into vogue?

“Teen Wolf” star Holland Roden attends the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in a Naeem Khan silver mirror beaded bateau-neck t-shirt paired and champagne silk faille open ballskirt over cigarette pants paired with Rupert Sanderson heels and a H. Stern ring.

Naeem Khan Resort 2014 Collection

Because this outfit made these two queens laugh and clap and shout “AUNTIE MAME!!” Which means we’re going to have to recuse ourself from performing our judging duties. We simply can’t be trusted on this one. Our gay genes force us to love it. You tell us: uniquely pretty or awkward and ugly?

Vote Now!

IN! Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!

OUT! Well I mean it was JUST GHASTLY!

All y’all thought Hailee Steinfeld’s Kid’s Choice Awards dress was the bomb-diggety. Or IN, as the kids say.

I f***ing love this outfit. IN, DARLINGS!

    • StellaZafella

I’ll say it was a good try at the wrong event. When Givenchy did it for Audrey Hepburn he remembered to put a pannier under the skirt to hold it out so the panted legs didn’t look like they were playing hide-n-seek.

      • zenobar

You’re right! I guess they just don’t make ‘em like they used to. But this is still one of my favorite looks in recent red carpet history.

      • Betsy

ALSO, I don’t remember the overskirt ever being this LONG. They just look dowdy like this. AND all of the ones that Aunty Mame wore were fun. THIS is such a boring, serious combination of fabric, top, shoes. TOO earnest, darling. The Hostess Pants are supposed to be fun. These look like the ears of an afghan hound!

        • StellaZafella

I just looked it up…The Edith Head version for Rosalind Russell was a coat-like overdress with an Asian inspired pants suit under and clasped open in the front for the reveal…still stunning and floor length. But you’re right…The open front skirt and Cigarette pants that I’m picturing, I can’t find…but I was certain it was Hepburn and Givenchy. If we both remember it, maybe I’m not crazy…maybe. ,:>)

          • Betsy

Well, Audrey Hepburn had that AMAZING “double-dress” in “Sabrina”, so it might be that. White with black embroidery. Givenchy, definitely. It was when he first started dressing her. Strapless, VERY slim fitted underskirt, with a BIG balloon-y skirt around it — at least as long as this one, but WITH the stiff tulle under it to hold it out and UP. This one just fails under its own weight and length.

    • H2olovngrl

Agree, Agree, Agree! I unabashedly, unreservedly love it!

  • sockandaphone

    yikes. no. OUT.
    top half is cute tho

  • filmcricket

Bless you boys for the Auntie Mame reference. Love it.

That said, I don’t know this girl, but she does not appear to have the required oomph to pull this off. I’m going to have to vote Out.

    • jen_vasm

I heartily agree. I kind of love the look, but it needs a proper hemming for her and she needs some Auntie Mame attitude to pull this off. And better shoes.

    • decormaven

I agree. She is not presenting this in the proper fashion, leg slightly out, toe pointed. And those are seriously ugly shoes. Last night was Attack of the Hiddy Footwear, for sure.

  • itsnotoveryet11

no, never in a million years, it made me gasp in the worst possible way
    OUT

  • Nicole C

I had a Barbie outfit that involved hostess pants. I unconditionally love them. IN

    • zenobar

By any chance was it Pink ‘n’ Pretty Barbie, or Golden Dreams Barbie (with the copper wires in her hair that “curled” when you wound it around the included plastic curling iron)?

      • Sarah

Those were my top two. I can say that Pink N’ Pretty did NOT have these, but you could create the illusion with her Change Around Stole. I loved Golden Dreams, and mostly remember her hair and her lame gauntlets.

        • zenobar

Well – Google Images is a wonderful thing. Neither GD nor PNP Barbie had what could be technically described as “hostess skirts” – they both featured something that was more of a sheer ass-cape – but they both had the feel of a hostess skirt. Golden Dreams was probably my all-time favorite Barbie. Maybe because of the gauntlets! Remember how that metallic fabric always frayed?

LOVE that you remembered the phrase “Change Around Stole”! :)

          • Sarah

OMG of course I remembered it! I was pretty sure all grown-up ladies had one in their closet! (How disappointing the truth is.) And yes, all that metallic stuff frayed. I loved her so well that she ended up with the full Annie Lennox haircut which turned green b/c I cut it in the freshly mown yard. BTW, I meant “lame” guantlets. They were most def not lame.

          • zenobar

Hear, hear. Mostly what’s in my grown-up lady closet is old yoga pants and regrettable footwear.

          • Sarah

LAMAY. I swear, I typed that properly. Whatever, you get my meaning. And yeah, if I’d been told that my wardrobe would contain almost 100% knitwear as a grown lady, I would’ve been very upset.

          • The Versatile Chef

My God, you’ve been to my house.

      • Nicole C

It was the Pink N’ Pretty one I think – I remember you could change the look, and that one was my favorite :)

      • ankali

You just sent me down a Google wormhole that was incredibly enjoyable. I’d forgotten about Golden Dream Barbie; she might have been my first one. My favorite was Crystal Barbie, though. Also Peaches ‘n’ Cream Barbie, who IIRC may have smelled like actual ( albeit reeeeeaaally carcinogenically fake) peaches.

My sister and I loved Crystal Barbie so much that we fought over her, and my mom got a second one so we each could have our own (and, not coincidentally, STFU). So of course I made sure that my Barbie haircut experiments were on my sister’s doll. I knew I’d done the right thing when I tried to give Barbie bangs, and they just stuck straight up. God, and then I gave my sister the same haircut. Good times!

    • teensmom99

My first thought was Barbie outfit.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

My first thought was Whoopi Goldberg.

    • http://thatswhatthemoneyisfor.wordpress.com/ lizlemonglasses

IN, for the same impeccable logic!

      • Rhonda Shore

IN! Too fabulous! She even looks good in that color!

    • MoHub

      I had that one too!

    • AmeliaEve

Mine was Patio Party, with a one-shoulder paisley jumpsuit, and a blue and green satin split-skirt popover. This outfit doesn’t begin to compete with Patio Party, sorry.

      • Margaret Nikoleit

I had this one too! And over the years, I probably made Barbie wear that split-skirt item over almost everything else she had.

      • Sarah

Daaang. I didn’t have Patio Party, but she sounds slammin’.

    • another_laura

      Dinner at Eight (I’m old…..)

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

OUT – Did she have any idea as to the event she was attending? And why was her face paint gun set to clown?

    • marlie

Right?! I thought it was the light, but… there’s like perfect circles of blush on her cheeks. Someone didn’t know what they were doing.

      • zenobar

True – that blush is awful.

      • 3boysful

The whole doll-like (ok, clown) face is awful. You never do dark eyes AND bright cheeks AND bright lips!!

And someone taller and ‘tude-ier could pull off the outfit. And I will take the bejeweled tee.

    • OffToSeeHim

Oh, well okay, that’s a good point. They might have been better suited to the Emmys or Golden Globes. But I don’t care – still SO in.

  • Sobaika

She looks fab but this is NOT for the VMAs. Maybe she got lost on the way to the Emmys?

It would have been fine if the skirt part was removed altogether.

    • Imasewsure

The skirt is what makes it fun and retro-unusual but as you say, wrong venue!! Emmys definitely would have been a much better choice (and maybe even one we applauded too)

  • Jessica Freeman

OUT. Damn shame that would have been a killer outfit without the skirt part.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

It is SOoooooooooo Auntie Mame. That said, the bottom half is too big on her. Plus its really not right for the VMA Awards, is it? Small case out.

    • zenobar

Agreed that this is not even a tiny bit venue-appropriate, but that’s one of the major reasons I love this: she’s like a little island* of icy-cool retro glamour in a sea of tacky, overwrought look-how-edgy-I-am getups.**

*Yeah, that skirt is crazy big.

**You kids get off my lawn.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Where I have an issue is the fit of the pants, which is way off. If the pants fit perfectly, I wouldn’t mind that vast skirt a bit.

  • AnnPopovic

How can you vote no on this??? IT’S MARVELOUS! In in IN in in and IN!

  • Tatiana Luján

    In.

  • jmorino08

Hostess pants, eh?! You know what? I don’t hate it. She’s working the look and it works for her. Might have been cooler and more event appropriate in black though. IN!

  • stellamaris73

IN on Rosalind Russell. OUT on this over-rouged Kewpie.

  • Luneowl

I’m trying to see past her glassy stare and lips being so tightly pressed together that she looks like she’s going to vomit. Outside of that, well…out. It’s too bland to warrant so much damned cloth.

  • marlie

I like it, but it seems WAAAAY to classy for the VMAs. Her hair is fine, though the makeup job is atrocious. And I’m really annoyed by the glassy-eyed perma-smirk.

    In other words… unfortunately, out.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

IN. Like picture windows, all pants look better when nicely framed with matching drapes.
And I thought of Lucy before I thought of Auntie Mame but I’m with you.

    • hillmad

Yes! I immediately thought of Lucy, too! O I always loved those hostess pants/skirt! I think Holland may be a little young and short for these, but kudos to her for giving the look a try! But I wish it were for a more worthy event; heck, the opening of a dry cleaners would be a more worthy event!

      • Barbara Thomas

Yes! I swear Lucy wore hostess pants on an episode of I Love Lucy. And I remember thinking she looked fabulous. Although she always looked fabulous. As did Laura Petrie.

  • Karen Belgrad

” I saw it in the window and I just couldn’t resist it.”

  • barbarienne

    IN!

For everything below the neck. What is with that harsh makeup? Was she performing on stage and wanted to be sure the back row could see her?

  • teensmom99

Squeaks by with an IN but I think you have to be a little more Rosalind Russell to pull it off. The top half is working but the bottom half is wearing her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

IN! Even though it’s really too classy for the VMAs.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

Well she needs to run briskly down a flight of stairs in that outfit, doesn’t she?

  • Ramon Figueroa

It needs an older, more fabulous person. In other words, a Rosalind Russell or Angela Lansbury.

    • hillmad

or a Lucille Ball (but NOT as Auntie Mame!)

      • Ramon Figueroa

Or Loretta Young. Lucille Ball as Auntie Mame is the stuff of nightmares. And yet I love the movie as a train wreck. And you get Bea Arthur as the ultimate drag queen.

  • kmk05

I wish her makeup was a little less clownish. Love the top, wish they had taken some volume out because she is TINY and that is a lot of drapery. Whatever, she’s cute: in. NO WAIT I CAN’T THOSE DRAPES. OUT.

I’m so happy she got rid of that little tie thing the model has on her stomach! What are they even knotting?

  • Nancer

IN! IN! IN! I LURV this! It’s so old and yet so new again.

  • DTLAFamilies

I love the idea but the execution missed the mark. Pants are too full and the size of the skirt overwhelms her. Too bad, I’d love to see someone like Solange successfully try hostess pants.

  • GillianHolroyd

    IN. Adore all things mid-century.

    But yeah, YMAs? (needle scratch)

  • Anne

I love it, but I don’t think she’s the person to wear it.

    • Chipster

Totally agree. She’s cute but this outfit requires someone more statuesque!

  • Michael_Jones

I just don’t think this is the right venue. Particularly from the back view (and all girl-stars know they get photographed from the back as well), it looks like a particularly grandiose ball gown, and that doesn’t feel very VMA. I don’t hate it, but I’m giving it an OUT.

  • amanda lynn

I love the concept, but I hate what it’s doing to her crotch. Third photo down – the camel toe is awful.

  • RebeccaKW

In. I love it. She needed better shoes, though.

  • c8h10n4o2

I’m sure that H. Stern is thrilled to pieces that they loaned her what I’m assuming is a pretty flashy ring (according to the credits), and she spent all of her time with her hands in her damned pockets. OUT for not pole-dancing appropriately.

  • kipper

Beautiful – But wrong for the cray cray event…

  • Badgirlsgoeverywhere

Love this but wrong for the venue, no? A different red carpet, yes. VMAs, no.

  • rage_on_the_page

    Way in. I love it!

  • Tanya Wade

I have no idea who this young ‘un is, but I love her style. Not a hair out of place, coral lipstick and pants! IN.

  • OffToSeeHim

SO in!!! I always just LUSTED after those when Lucille Ball wore them! I want a pair just for hostessing around here! Not this nice of course. I’d love to have somewhere to wear something like that, because I would ROCK that shit OUT.

  • prismamars

    I love it! In

  • Sarah

I just watched Ida Lupino in the “The Sixteen Millimeter Shrine” episode of Twilight Zone the other day, and she was sporting some hostess pants in her I-wish-I-was-still-a-star delusion, therefore, for nostalgia and good times, I vote IN. She looks purty.

  • boweryboy

I like this in theory (or in vintage fashion mags).

A better choice of shoe, something a bit delicate, and a pop of color somewhere woulda been an IN for me.

As it stands its an OUT.

  • amian3

IN. The makeup is completely unacceptable and the skirt would be better if it were less so. A bit to fancy for the VMAs but it is a great look and she would be WERQing if it weren’t for the Baby Jane face.

  • bellafigura1

IN, although the top skirt layer thingy is too heavy — a little shorter, a little lighter in weight.

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com/ heartbot

IN IN IN! My favorite of the night. Maybe of the year. PERFECTION.

  • melanie0866

IN, because it’s beautiful and she’s beautiful in it. But OUT because it’s the VMA’s and she does NOT fit in.

  • OrigamiRose

IN, even though I think it was wasted on the wrong venue.

  • Introspective

not the right venue. not the right age for the look. not even the right fit. its just not right anyway you slice it.

    girl bye.

  • formerlyAnon

    IN.

(Unless one must be disqualified from an in for makeup?)

    • marlie

Yes, I think the makeup is an important-enough part of the look that it can make or break it.

  • sleepycat

while wearing this to the vma’s is questionable, there is nothing questionable about this outfit. IN

  • MoHub

Absolutely Auntie Mame, although both Rosalind Russell and Angela Lansbury did it a lot better!

  • ChelseaNH

Out. I can get behind the idea of hostess pants, but these are stiff and curtain-y.

  • Luke Pacheco

I’m having a hard time deciding. I want to say in, because i think it’s a “still talking about it” look that isn’t vulgar or tacky… I want to say out because she isn’t doing it with any personal sense of style. She has so completely taken the model’s look and duplicated that.. the hair.. the clown makeup, the color on the shoe.. So perhaps I’ll say OUT due to lack of personal investment.

  • Anplica Fiore

I love the top but hate pretty much the rest of the look. That makes this an OUT

  • Emily

    IN! It’s AMAZING!

  • Belvane

Love it. Not necessarily on her, though. Let’s try it on January Jones.

  • Lizzyisi

Love the outfit, but it’s completely wrong for the event and she shouldn’t have ditched the tie around the waist. Hair and eyes are perfect–the blush is out of control.

So basically, the outfit is in; the deployment is out.

  • Donna Tabor

It’s a bifurcated ballgown! You guys asked for more ladypants on the red carpet. If you start complaining now it will be ungracious, right? LOL

She looks gorgeous, but the shape is not very flattering.

  • mmebam

    In

  • sagecreek

OUT. That’s way too much skirt.

  • CheriCPat

    Out. Sorry.

  • SephSki

I totally love it! All the froof and status of yards and yards of fabric, but with the practicality of pants. They are the mullet of textiles. You can have it all!

  • TSkot

    Wrong venue: OUT

  • Imasewsure

I applaud the idea but totally wrong venue. OUT simply because it’s the VMAs

  • nannypoo

From the back it looks like an interesting wedding dress. From the front it looks like a gaudy top with pants and an odd half-skirt. Oh, wait, that’s exactly what it is. She looks surprised that her lipstick contains super glue and now she can’t move her face.

  • paintedfish

Life is a banquet darlings! love it!

  • julnyes

I love this look, but must call it an OUT due to horrid make-up and the fact it is being deployed at the wrong venue.

  • DKBB

IN! Hostess pants NEED to make a big comeback! Go Auntie Mame!!! ;)

  • Kate Andrews

Yes, but only because it’s the VMAs. But she looks scared!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

IN, but way too much blush.

  • Janet B

I love this outfit, but not on her: out.

  • Rand Ortega

IN w/ conditions. Doesn’t belong in the venue. To me it screams Deborah Kerr or Ingrid Bergman as Cary Grant’s love interest at a cotillion, not edgy rocker event. Great for the SAG Awards or the Golden Globes, not the VMA’s.

    • silly little thumb

Exactly. This look is too sophisticated for the VMAS.

  • JuliaInBlack

I kinda see a little polternut going on, but it’s too far dramatic and interesting to take away points for that. Gutsy choice. IN

  • theblondette

Amazeballs. In! Even though the front of the skirt looks a bit awkward, this is one sassy outfit.

  • carrie

LOVE it, but the MTV Awards is completely the wrong venue for this outfit.

  • Diego!

If this would have been a dress, I would have given it an IN, but I HATE those pants and the how the skirt is open so it’s an OUT to me!

  • Adriana_Paula

I feel like an Aryan from Darien for saying this, but I can’t quite go to in despite my love of the idea. Dear God I wish I could have seen Cate in this.

  • Carrieanno

IN. A little out there, but in a pretty way.

  • Sweet_Fashionista

So far “IN” we need to invent a new word…..

  • mjude

IN. i would wear that in a flipping heartbeat!

  • crash1212

IN. So IN. I’ve always loved this look…not sure it’s the venue for it, but I’m all for bringing back hostess pants! Auntie Mame FOREVA. Also, those are the way wrong shoes for this outfit…how dare you sully the look?

  • siriuslover

The makeup is ridiculous, but the outfit is kinda cool. Just this side of in.

  • Kate

    EVERYTHING! Yes to EVERYTHING! IN.

  • Jangle57

While I rather like it on the model, it simply engulfs Holland. So that plus the hideous shoes and sorry, but not liking her makeup or hair either it’s just a big ole OUT for me.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

    In.

  • Danielle

Totally not venue-appropriate but I kind of love it. Balls to the wall.

  • Charlotte Karlsen

    LURVE ITTT

  • bertkeeter

AUNTIE MAME…perfect! Except that look was better executed. There is enough fabric in this skirt to make two more!

  • Poeta Paz

Not the right event for this, and probably, not the right person.

  • LadyCelia

For the record, I love a good pair of hostess pants. And perhaps without her hands in the pockets, this outfit would fall more flatteringly at the hip. As worn, I’m not loving these hostess pants.

Plus Auntie Mame’s were in a much nicer color, and she wore better shoes.

  • ErmengardeGreen

    Love it.

  • Guest

in In IN!!!!! L-O-V-E!!! I gasped when this showed up on twitter! Fabulous!

  • mznormann

LOVE! It’s time for the return of hostess pants!! Long overdue! ;-)

  • LaSylphide

Odd choice for the venue, but i do love this style. IN, even though I don’t think she is really carrying it off very well.

  • http://magnetgirl.tumblr.com Anika

I love this, but she doesn’t fit in…which may not actually be a bad thing… I can’t seem to decide in or out either.

  • Jennifer Ford

I think if she’d worn it with a bit more confidence, I would love it (because, yes Auntie Mame — my favorite favorite movie growing up) but she seems to feel a bit nervous about her choice and that’s undercutting the presentation. Alas.
    A very mild Out.

  • kirkyo

I have gay genes too but I think it’s horrible, except from the back where it looks like a normal, pretty dress.

  • Morales Mike

You know what happened when Lucy bought Ethel hostess pants for her birthday don’t you? “.. I did not call her a hippo, I merely said they made her look a little hippy but now that you mention it she does have the biggest pottamus I’ve ever seen.” That said, I kinda love this look. Very Lucy swanning around the hotel room in Hollywood.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT. I really want to like this, because I love the idea of it. But the outfit overwhelms her. She’s too petite and too young to carry it. I also really dislike the pleating at the front of the overskirt, and the way it fails to come together at the waist. Typically, this sort of outfit has more of a V-shaped opening that lets the pants peek through. This one is just framing the view of her crotch, and adding a lot of bulk at the same time. I love all the fabrics and it’s gorgeous from the back. I don’t even mind the gold shoes with the silvery top. But the front view is so heavy and fussy that it spoils the line. Sad.

  • Britney

Huh. I’m going IN. This is muy interesting and weirdly pretty?

  • thecitysleeps

OUT OUT OUT. She looks like she’s been eaten with all that fabric.

  • Judy_J

Too much fashion for this little girl to carry off. This dress demands Roz Russell….no one else can do it justice. OUT.

  • MilaXX

small IN. I like the look but it’s a bit aging on a 20something. Send it to Jane Fonda

  • kimmeister

    Out, because:
    1) Too high-falutin’ for the venue
    2) Beige satin peep toes give us a sad

On the positive side, that is her lip color.

  • Snailstsichr

I have loved Auntie Mame for decades, so I’m giving this an IN even though it looks like the crotch is ripping.

  • AnguaVonUberwald

    IN.

  • semirose

I’m going to go with IN because it’s fun and she looks great. Idk about for this venue and I wish she’d done something a bit more fun with her hair but overall it’s a great look.

  • jesuiskate

IN! Bold and different. Love it.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I think we need a little Christmas, right this very minute, even if it is Cheap Christmas Trash, and I am voting IN.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I think it’s cute, but the color is wrong – it looks like she stuffed cheap drapes into her pants and called it a train. Silver would have been better. I recuse myself because I like the idea in theory.

  • tereliz

IN! Wrong venue perhaps, but I have been waiting for more starlets to take the plunge with this silhouette and Holland did not disappoint. The top seems a little boxy and the skirt needs a pannier, but I hope this look catches on for more than just Met Balls.

  • Sadie-Ann

I don’t know why, but my gut reation is IN.

  • Bernadette

Love the outfit, but the wrong girl, wrong event.

  • lobsterlen

    Total In

  • JauntyJohn

IN — She’s working it, and it shows some stones to go in this direction for the VMA’s.

  • another_laura

I’m giving it an IN because I love Auntie Mame and because why shouldn’t hostess pants come back? My Barbie had them. They’re pants! They’re a gown! They’re both! But they do need a much taller, attitude-exuding woman to pull them off…..

  • hellkell

I kinda dig it, except for the shoes, the outfit needs color. An “IN” with some reservations.

  • steeg of their own

    IN.

I wish she’d gone less formal with her hair, but let’s face it: she likes to wear fashion and if she wore this to an actual high-fashion event she’d get mocked out of the building. So the VMAs were a good place to air this dress out and have some fun with it, while not having to worry about being the fashion flop of the night because someone else was guaranteed to grab the headlines by Just Being Miley.

  • alyce1213

IN. Wrong for the event, but I love it.

  • Fifi LaRoux

IN! She is giving me attitude and poise.

  • MalCo09

    IN! It’s dramatic and beautiful

  • ashtangajunkie

IN. If she had nailed the shoes, I would have been even more inexplicably excited by this but as it stands, I freaking love it.

  • appliquer

Out – too old for her!

  • DominoEstella

a little too much blusher my dear

  • MissFern

    VAGINA WINDOW! No.

  • Michelle Wilson

It’s pretty but worn to the wrong event. Out.

  • MarissaLG

It could work in theory, but not here. Not here at all. OUT.

  • Cathy S

I have to go with OUT because I like the idea of it, and the model looks pretty good in it, but she’s not werqing it at all. It is not her uh, lady-pants dress.

  • Paula Pertile

    I don’t think so.

  • rh33

Lady Iris meets Lucy Ricardo! I’ve always been a sucker for a dramatic hostess pant. IN!

  • Siobhan Connellan

LOVE the outfit! Hate everything from the neck up. Scary clown makeup! Eek! Would love to see Gwenyth Paltrow in that dress!

  • kim bunchalastnames

    i totally love this.

Out – if she had the necessary je ne sais quoi and better makeup it’d be in but she doesn’t have the dress-wearing chops to be fabulous in this.

  • MoreShoes

    hahahaha….OUT

  • carolynmo

I love this. It’s the best outfit of the whole train wreck.

  • Sarah Winningham

    In! Reeeaaaally Top Drawer!

  • Glam Dixie

    It’s an IN, unreservedly!

  • DuBey2

IN. Even those of us who never watched Auntie Mame can love it on its own merits and its uniqueness.

  • Merneith

    IN!

  • E. D.

    OUT. Major scrolldown FUG.

  • Kathleen

I feel it could have been a in but she didn’t sell it. Out.

    • conniemd

This is me exactly. Looks great on the model. This woman should have ripped off the skirt and just worn the pants and she’d have looked chic and cool. She doesn’t have the gravitas and face to sell the look. Out.

And I loved Auntie Mame, but she isn’t Auntie Mame. Mame was over the top wondrous.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Out waaaay too formal for the event.

  • rissa42210

    YES, GIRL. YES. In!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    HOSTESS PANTS!

I love them, but I’m not sure this is the woman or the occasion to bring them back properly. IN for effort, though.

  • Betsy

OUT — bad proportions. The Hostess Pants are supposed to be fun and flippy. These are earnest and boring, and the overskirt is WAY too long. Plus, it’s missing the layer or two of stiff tulle, to hold the skirt out. The sides of the skirt look like the ears of an afghan hound — even that boring color! And I have to echo what someone said before of the Attack of the Hiddy Shoes! (Also, what’s with the prissy look on her face, in EVERY photo?!?)

  • fuchaforeva

OUT- c’mon! Pants and skirt combo is ALWAYS out! There is a hacker attacking TLo!!!!! Someone report to the authorities!

  • gsk241

    I love it! IN!

  • guest2visits

This is a beautiful outfit; whatever it’s called. I think the model looks spectacular in it, and Holland doesn’t look bad either…but this is the wrong RC for something so dramatic and formal. This kind of thing is perfect celebrity-wear though. Mostly IN.

  • Dan_In_NYC

On style alone in a vacuum: in. On appropriateness for the venue – so far out it’s almost swinging back to in. Only not at all.

  • elephantasmagoric

I honestly think this girl is one of the prettiest young actresses out there; absolute bombshell material who doesn’t quite know how to showcase it to its best potential yet. In this case I think she’s stepping into the right direction- the right and interesting is over-riding the wrong for me. IN.

  • Constant Reader

I love the outfit but she’s not giving it the attitude it needs. I’m nowhere near as young, slim, or pretty as she is, but if I were wearing that outfit I’d be swanning around and calling everyone “little love.”

    Damn. I just recused myself, didn’t I?

  • kimiakay

Out. It’s not ghastly, but it is awkward on her. I actually love the outfit on the model but Holland is just not pulling this off. I think the bottom part doesn’t fit her properly, probably too long for her. Also her clown makeup is just sad, and someone else mentioned the look on her face. She doesn’t seem to have enough confidence to wear this. I do love that beaded top.

  • fashionzombie

Oh good lord. NO. OUT. NO.

    • SRQkitten

      What she said. Exactly.

  • ali meowmeow

For an actress (not a musician) at the VMAs, it’s an out there version of classy that I can’t help but love. IN.
(And I’ve never seen Mame, so I think my vote can count.)

  • amber.

    out. bye.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

That horrible thing that Demi Moore wore, that was part bicycle pants, that one time. Except in BEIGE. So bad it doesn’t even deserve my vote.

  • Louise Bryan

Culottes as ballgown. OUT! I didn’t like ‘em then, and I still don’t.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In heaven, Rosalind smiles. It;s always been a silly look but Holland is lovely in it. IN.

  • Shawn EH

My gay genes are also mighty pleased. IN!

  • Pennymac

OUT! Wrong venue. And her make up looks like it was done by the Ringling School of Cosmetic Artistry.

  • Hetha Innis

    GORGEOUS!!!
    Though not appropriate for venue/event.

  • elzatelzabelz

OUT- No. Maybe on somebody else, somewhere else…maybe.

  • Call me Bee

LOVE this! Takes me right back to Loretta Young or Dinah Shore wearing these “slacks” on their respective TV shows in the early 60s. Lucy Ricardo, too, of course.
That said–this is an hostess outfit to be worn while entertaining. Not on the RC.
Love the outfit, but I say OUT. I know. I am strict.

    • MRC210

Exactly — that’s why they’re called hostess pants. They’re for sashaying around your glamorous apartment, waving your cigarette holder as your guests arrive, not for the red carpet. I saw a fabulous pair on July Holliday in Born Yesterday on TCM the other night. Also, the skirt is too full. And it looks better if the top matches the skirt and the pants are a contrasting color. No, no this is all wrong.

  • Kelly

The makeup is downright scary, but I love the hostess pants. Yes, bring ‘em back! I say IN, despite its being a little odd for the venue. Then again, “odd” is what this venue is all about.

  • CatherineRhodes

    OUT

  • Aidan B

I never noticed how similar her facial features are to Emmy Rossum’s. They could play sisters!
Going to have to give this a big old OUT though. The skirt looks like curtains opening up to her crotch.

  • NOLA_gal

I love this outfit, but think Ms Roden hit her head and thought she was going to Cannes. No way this is a VMA’s dress!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN! If only for the Auntie Mame reference. :)

  • Adrianna Grężak

AHAH WOW. I totally said “Oh, this will be an in” when I saw the thumbnail, but TLO punked me!!

  • TigerLaverada

Out. Awkward and ugly. She’s no Roz Russell, who had the presence and charisma to carry off such an intrinsically strange style.

  • Linda LaPaz

Yes, it’s way past time for hostess pants to come back! I love this look, even though the skirt is too long and a little wrinkly. Still, great look – please come back! IN, IN, IN!

  • Sweetpea176

I really, really WANT to give it an in. I LOVE the overskirt/cigarette pants look, and want it back with all my heart (although I don’t think I, personally, could make it work). This, however, no. The proportions are wrong, with those heavy pleats in front. Looks more fussy than effortlessly graceful. Too earnest, someone said upthread. Sorry, but no. “A” for effort, though.

  • Mariah J

OUT…I can’t say a single redeeming thing about this look. Bad top to bottom.

  • ankali

I really like the ensemble, but she is NOT pulling it off. And her makeup is fucking awful. OUT, through no fault of my beloved Naeem Khan.

  • Greg

IN! Now I want to go read the two books and watch the film.

  • CommentsByKatie

LOOOOOVE this. She’s not quite giving me enough face, but it doesn’t matter because the dress is so fabulous. I would have j’adored Fan Bing Bing in this gown. Someone make this happen.

  • Judih1

This is a poorly executed knockoff of an Auntie Mame look. And this is totally the wrong venue for it. And she doesn’t have the attitude to pull it off OUT

  • KingCrazy

    This is stupid.

  • nicewilliams

LOVE!!! Fish face has to go though. Oh, and those crazy eyes.

  • mila_8

She seemed to get through the pole dance with a straight face, I say IN.

  • quiltrx

It pains me to say OUT. I love-love-love the idea of the outfit, and even how it looks on the model. But it’s the wrong venue, the wrong girl, the wrong make-up.

  • ItsDicey

Oh God, how I love Auntie Mame, which makes me kinda’ love this. But, alas, NOT at this event. OUT

  • MzzPants

    OUT with wax-head figurines.

  • mdcoon127

    Love it!

  • demidaemon

You know, credit for taking a risk. But that bottom half is crazy and clearly at the wrong venue. At the Met Gala, this would be IN. Here, she is OUT.

  • Reality TV Casting

    in in in in in

  • Constant Cat

I can’t even see the couture clownery. Can’t get past the….terrifying….wide eyed face. Perhaps she has the ability to possess? Those eyes are uh…Parallax-esque.

  • Ummy

    So very out.

Might’ve liked it if it was just pants instead of… whatever that curtain mess is. That is of course, ignoring the make-up. Also, the model’s shoes are a lot better.

I like the top though. So I guess it’s got that going for it.

  • unbornfawn

IN. They have their Ups and downs. Let’s get the hem right next time.

  • HVM

    Fun, fun, fun!

  • Yaara

    Most definitely IN!!!

  • Jenna Marie

    This is gorgeous. IN.

  • somebody blonde

    IN! It’s fun.

  • HM3

I love this outfit, but it’s inappropriate for the VMAs. Far too dressy.

  • librarygrrl64

IN as an outfit, OUT as an outfit for the VMAs.

  • Lilyana_F

Out. It looks like she cannot close her legs together

  • rougeort

In, in, in! It’s unique AND chic!

  • MandyM

In! This is fun and dramatic which is the direct opposite of Miley Cyrus.

  • zob rombie

IN! It has attitude and a sense of aesthetic reference. It’s not perfect, but it is refreshing! Pretty from a few angles too!

  • Katie McKinney

    In!

  • kathrineb

IN. The right way of doing OTT.

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

    UGH.

  • Mags

Love the outfit, hate the hair and makeup. They make her look like she’s in her mid-forties instead of her mid-twenties.
