Miley Cyrus in Proenza Schouler at the “Paranoia” LA Premiere

Posted on August 09, 2013

Every dress has its wearer, darlings. Sort of the flipside of the “Girl, that’s not your dress” philosophy. Many may try to wear this one, but it clearly belongs to Miley and Miley only:

Miley Cyrus attends the premiere of “Paranoia” in Los Angeles, Califonia in a Proenza Schouler dress paired with Saint Laurent pumps and a Chanel ‘Boy’ bag.

Proenza Schouler Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Kel Markey

Chanel ‘Boy’ Bag

To be honest, we don’t even like the dress all that much. It’s too busy, distracting, stiff and heavy-looking to our eyes. But she’s a girl with a lot of personality and the kind of easily changeable look to pull something like this off. She looks a little grownup but still like the loudmouth attention-seeking youngster she is.

We just used “youngster.” Shoot us in the face right now. It’s over.

Anyway, we go back and forth on whether the white accessories are fun and smart or too distracting. And while we love the Chanel bag, we question whether it works with this outfit or on the red carpet at all.

Also: Girl, that’s not your lip shade.

The lip shade is awful, but if this is anyone’s dress, it’s Miley’s. It works well enough. HATE the shoes though, and the purse is all wrong.

    • 3boysful

I was thinking same: how can we not mention (ok, I know there’s other issues here) the glaring white platform pumps? Talk about your focus-pull.

  • Lori

A huge “no” to the shoes and also “no” to the bag. Otherwise I’ll give her this one. Like T&Lo I don’t actually like the dress, but she’s working it and seems happy in it.

  • TonyGo

Cute. She looks like a modern take on a the Queen of Hearts.

  • Shawn EH

Yeah, she needed to refer to the red in the dress for her lips; and am I wrong, or would the blue version of the bag have looked better than the black and white? The blue one is fun, but the B&W looks stuffy, somehow.

    • Getoverit

I was thinking the same thing, the blue one would have really popped. However, I for one am glad to see she didn’t do the big red lips this time. At least none of these show her tongue hanging out for once. That being said, they do need to be darker/brighter.

  • gabbilevy

Love this dress on her. Could have done with better shoes.

  • Constant Reader

She looks so much better than usual that I am willing to give her a pass on my minor quibbles.

    • Diego!

      I agree!

      • Rhonda Shore

        me too!

  • Diego!

I have to say this dress is perfect to her. It even looks great on her. BUT those aren’t the shoes for this dress and her make up is so so. But I like the dress on her as I mentioned before.

    • drdarke

I think the shoes and bag…. “Work” is too strong a term, but they aren’t distractingly bad to my eyes.

And yes – Girl, That Is Your Dress. It fits her Just Out of Her Teens persona rather too well…!

  • formerlyAnon

I like the dress on her. I think the whole look works, but her makeup is leaving her looking a little waxy and pale, IMO. Is that just down to the lip shade?

    • mlle

I think there’s too much highlighter. She looks shiny — but like plastic instead of like she’s got a natural glow, and the Barbie lashes don’t do much to counter that.

      • rajf

And those brows! I appreciate a heavier brow, but the painted on element is bad. Combined with the shiny face they’re making me think of elderly ladies (one of my grandmothers specifically).

      • snarkmeister

Yes. And did she get a collagen injection in her lips? I mean, I know the lipstick color is awful, but is it just the color that’s making her ducklippy, or is she starting down the ridiculous path (paved boldly by the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Tara Reid) of girls getting plastic surgery when barely out of their teens?

  • MilaXX

Like the dress and the shoes (on her), but not the bag, That’s a twee too far.

    • mjude

      love your new kitty face!

      • MilaXX

  • Chartreusite

She looks like she’s enjoying herself and is somewhat comfortable wearing it, which always did seem to be her greatest strength as a fashion wearer. Even though she wears some cracktacular stuff every now and again, she always commits to it somewhat with her public attitude.

    • largishbearishAtlish

yeah, there is something goofily joyous in this pic….god love her (or as we say in the south ‘bless her heart’

      • Chartreusite

        She’s like the nega-Ginnifer Goodwin 😉

  • hughman

This is what second grade teachers wear in Whitesnake videos.

  • charlotte

I think the dress belongs to nobody except the trash can. But she doesn’t look tacky, I give her that.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

With the exception of the too-light lip, this is a ‘WERQ’ for me. It’s a Frankendress but on her, it’s delightful.

    • calimon

I was really starting to loathe the clown red lips she had going on for a while. But now I’m wondering whether this would have been the time to bring the bright red lips(?)

  • Catiline

Cute! I like the top more than the bottom, but I don’t mind the shoes at all. The bag’s another story.

  • KateMaryC

The one time I wish she’d fallen back on her usual red lip.

  • flamingoNW

Not sure I will ever like white pumps anywhere except a wedding….

    • Aurumgirl

Not even there. A savvy bride will wear any other coloured pump and look much better.

  • Erica_Vuitton

She’s been on a no pants/no bra trend lately so to see her looking so lady like with upper thighs covered and no nips is refreshing, especially when attending your fiancee’s movie premiere. “Know your venue.” MY only quibble is I would’ve loved a Pairs Post for her and Liam. 🙁

  • fringebenefit

All good except that wretched two-tone hair and the missed opportunity for red lipstick.

  • bellafigura1

Incredible how a dress with that much going on can end up being just meh. I don’t mind the white shoe, just not that white shoe — it looks big and clunky. But yep, love the bag and I’m not a Chanel fan.

    • mlle

A white single sole pump would be an improvement.

  • Glam Dixie

I pains me to admit this, but I think she is adorable, but I really don’t remember her lips being that, er…puffy? Is it just me? Were they always that full or has there been some plumping going on?

    • Sarah

No, it’s ducklipping. They remain their natural size.

  • Perfect for her. The white shoes are so expected at this point, it’s a bit depressing. I also appreciate that she came out as a fashionable, supportive girl friend and left her grill and fuzzy panties shorts at home. Way to not be an attention whore, Miley. Why does she struggle with lipstick so much? I know she’s got a quite the pout on her, but it’s always either too hooker bright or too corpsy pale.

  • Claire

It’s odd that she looks remarkably like Chris Hemsworth’s wife/girlfriend Elsa Pataky

  • KSuKim

I’m not crazy about any of the accessories here. All she really needed was a kickass pair of earrings, but the dress really works for her.

  • alyce1213

She looks better than the model — it truly is a fabulous, crazy dress just for her.
This could have been a WERQ, but the shoes must die.

  • teensmom99

I think Lily Collins could also pull it off–but maybe that’s because there’s so little she couldn’t wear well. And possibly a personal best for Miley (even if that bar is a little low).

  • Ali B

I think this would be so much of a better look for her than that weird ratchet nonsense she keeps trying to make werq.

  • JauntyJohn

Usually with a Miley post I feel the need to issue a little disclaimer first, like “.. she’s not my cup of tea…” and then note how smart she (usually) looks.

But Miss Thing is winning me over through sheer personality and red carpet vamping.

I’m a Yes on the White Accessories — there are white notes in the dress itself, so it coordinates without competing with such an admittedly busy (grandiosity check: I almost typed “kinetic” lol) dress.
She’s grown up in the spotlight, and presumably is high half the time, but she seems to have a freedom with herself that a lot of others lack.
    Also: knock out jewelry.

  • unbornfawn

Draco really is working the dress. The changes made from the runway version really help too. Agreed with the lipstick and I can go either way with the white.

  • majorbedhead

STOP IT WITH THE DUCK LIPS! God. And get off my lawn.

    • Cz

But leave the purse before you go!

  • mlle

What is that to the left of her neck? Is it a necklace that got stuck beneath the dress?

  • ashtangajunkie

Definitely Miley’s dress and I am loving her hair like that.

  • cmb123

Great dress, poor styling. I wish she had worked her messy hair and chosen accessories with more bite to them.

  • decormaven

She’s working it, even with the white shoes and bag. Credit goes where credit is due. Salute!

  • another_laura

I guess I’m just happy she’s wearing pants. I assume. Under the dress, I mean. You know.

  • Cyprienne Zed

I like it. A lot. Dammit.

  • Monabel

  • bertkeeter

Dress could be nice except for that front panel, distracting at best. NO, NO, NO to the white pump…n black n white bag!

  • mhleta

I am not now or ever will be a fan, but butter my butt and call me a biscuit, she looks really good in this dress. Lets hope this trend continues. Now if someone would please teach this child some manners.

  • kayleymaybe

I think it’s nice to see her tone it down when she’s stepping out to support her man.

  • Beth513

I like her shoes with that outfit, and maybe only with that outfit.

  • frannyprof

I wish she would STOP with the weird duck lips.

  • d4divine

Love the dress…on her, but hate the bag, shoes, and makeup. This is a dress that could have been really cool with the right accessories….shame

  • Imasewsure

Like the dress… hate the shoes and bag… and not really agreeing that it’s Miley’s dress only… I think lit might work on other ladystars if they kept the styling simple…

  • nannypoo

It pains me to say this because I can’t stand this little snot, but it looks better on her than it does on the model.

  • ThaliaMenninger

So the fact that she and the Hemsworth were at the same event… Does that mean they’re still engaged or whatever? Sorry, but he’s way too cute and seemingly normal for a Cyrus. As for the dress… Miley has found her niche. It looks very good on her, and I’m even willing to go for the bag. Not the shoes. They’re hiddy. But yes to the bag and the dress and how both look on her.

  • stubbornthoughts

Why can’t Miley look like this all the time? Or at least in this wheelhouse? This quirky, non-whorish punk side suits her far better.

  • getouttadodge

I’d sell organs for that bag. Mine or other people’s.

  • Tracy_Flick

I hate the white pumps trend. They always, always look cheap. Like doll shoes on an cut-rate, off-brand Barbie. Just when you thought NOTHING could be worse than the ubiquitous silly putty shoe.

  • Rachael

is it just me, or is she starting to resemble the “lollipop girls” of the ’90s (think Callista Flockhart or that chick from Twin Peaks)?

  • guest2visits

What – no nipples no crotch shots…? How do I know it’s Miley?
This really looks good on her, but the white shoes are taking it down a notch. Grey? Black? Cobalt?

  • largishbearishAtlish

Omigod- this would be hysterically funny on anyone else….but on her it oddly works. Good call.

  • jmorino08

I don’t know. I think Mara Rooney could totally rock that!

  • Is that a safety pin in her ear??

  • Overall, I like the dress, but it should have been just a bit shorter, and while the dress screams “I’m all edgy and s**t,” the accessories whisper, “but we’re ladies who lunch.”

  • quiltrx

I think I feel almost as harshly toward white pumps as I do toward poorly-used silly putty pumps.
They make me want to go on a Beverly Sutphin killing tangent.

  • Sonja Brisson

She looks great and not stoned.

  • I say, that’s a correctly deployed white shoe. And yes, that’s her dress.

  • RuthGo

I love, love, love that dress and, in a minority opinion, I’m on board with the accessories. Maybe more of an off white pump that was a better match to the color of the snakeskin, but I’m not mad at the white shoes.

  • Town

She should’ve stuck to the red lips and changed the shoes to black.

  • Danielle

This is perfect for her. She should buy one in every color.

  • Peeve

I’m with you, Gents. I don’t like that dress at all. If I were to see it on a hangar, I’d call it fugly. But, somehow, it works on Miley. Don’t know why, but it does.
