Lily Collins and Kevin Zegers at The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Premiere

Posted on August 13, 2013

Darlings, is there anything more life-affirming and complexion-improving than judging pretty people? We say no.

Lily Collins and Kevin Zegers attend the premiere of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” in Hollywood, California. Lily Collins is wearing a Cushnie et Ochs dress paired with Giuseppe Zanotti pumps and H. Stern jewelry. Kevin Zegers is wearing Dior Homme.

SHE: Gets points for working yet another in a long line of increasingly eye-popping looks. There’s certainly nothing shy or demure about this one. It’s her big goddamn movie premiere and she’s gonna make sure all eyes are on her. We support her narcissism. Unfortunately, we can’t get behind this dress at all. It’s weirdly heavy, like upholstery fabric almost, and it looks like she put her head through an armhole. The results of her abs routine are impressive, but that’s an odd configuration of skin to show off. Hair and makeup are gorgeous as always. Score: 6/10. Most of that’s for effort. We’re not prudish about skin-baring fashion, but this is the second time we’ve disliked it when she tried it. We think it’s not her thing.

HE: Gets points for choosing a gorgeous suit and for being groomed to perfection, which is, depressingly, all too rare among his tribe. You may quibble with the facial hair here – as we do – but it’s groomed and shaped. He’s making us weep with his open jacket and hands shoved into pockets. We can’t really see how this looks on him because he seems determined to obscure it as much as possible. From what we can see, both the jacket and the pants are a little big on him. Score: 6.5/10. Try harder next time.

Combined Score: 6.25/10. Tsk. Beautiful people in expensive clothing should not be getting mediocre scores.

I’m sorry, are they wearing clothing? This post is all about BROWS.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Her whole body just hangs off those perfectly shaped brows.

    • JasmineAM

I have full brows, but hers give me LIFE.

    • Anathema_Device

      Amen on the brows!

P.S. I still adore Brooke Shields solely for coming on the scene when I was in high school and making my Brezhnev brows stylish.

    • Lucía Gavello

They are staring at me TO MY DEATH. And I love it.

    • While her brows are shaped perfectly, she needs to get rid of some of the foliage on the bridge of her nose. She’s coming very close to a unibrow.

      • amanda lynn

THANK YOU, GIFTED COLLECTOR! I was seeing the adoration of the brows, but wondering when someone would point out how close we are to unibrow.

        • Mazenderan

Yes! I don’t mind a thick brow – but she needs to pluck the bridge of her nose. Just back a little closer to the inner corner of her eye,

      • Sarah

Agreed. All I see when I look at her is that tragic 3 millimeter gap between her brows. Love the thickness, hate the unibrow! Also, the dingy eye makeup so close to her brows makes her look a little bit like a neanderthal.

Finally, that suit is just sad.

      • filmcricket

Yup. Edging too close to Frieda Kahlo territory.

      • annrr

Amen. They are waaaaay too close together

  • hughman

Madame Tussauds still kind of freaks me out.

  • Monabel

His jacket makes me think of English schoolboys. Not in a good way.

    • ringthing

It makes me think of Captain Kangaroo.

      • 3boysful

        Ha! Me, too!

    • GillianHolroyd

It makes me think of The Prisoner.

  • MK03

Kevin Zegers was the best thing about the Felicity movie.

  • Felicia Zuniga

Please tell me you guys caught Robert Sheehan’s look and intend to guide me towards defining my feelings on it.

    • giddypony

I have feelings about it – god, TLo could run a regular feature of “holy hell Mr Sheehan” of looks he sports. What he wore looked too small and god almighty those white shoes! But if you want to see a real horror look at what he sported to the opening of the ballet. (Google Robert Sheehan ballet ) Love his acting to pieces but his fashion sense…

      • Felicia Zuniga

It’s either too small or he has yet to figure out how to work clothes. His posing in general is hilarious. The shoes in many shots are absolutely glowing. And yet… Why the hell not? I mean, there’s a list of reasons as to why the hell not, but for people who haven’t seen Misfits, he’s at least giving himself an identity. Even if that identity is “Crazy Irish guy who may or may not be borrowing suits from my Great Aunt Tess.”

The Ballet was his political statement t-shirt, right? I think I liked his IFTA look more because who else wears black lady jeans to that? Or maybe it’s a thing and I’m just not up on my IFTA attire. I actually went to refresh my memory on his clothing history and it’s generally hilariously awesome. Emphasis on the hilarious.

If only he could donate some of that pizzazz to Aidan Turner because the fact that that man is beautiful and basically a giant puppy does not make up for his tendency to dress older than his age.

    • JasmineAM

I fell in love with Sheehan when he was on Misfits. WE NEED TO SEE HIM NOW TLO.

  • crash1212

I’d give her another point for deploying white pumps in a way that doesn’t make me want to weep.

  • Courtenay P

His shoes just look so inexpensive and that’s bothering me for some reason.

    • marlie

As in, someone loaned him a Dior suit and he couldn’t bother to get his shoes polished? Yeah, I’m with you.

  • Betsy

And what’s with that extra strip of upholstery fabric at the bottom of the skirt. Obviously, the designer never watched “This Old House”. Repeat after me: “Measure Twice, Cut Once”.

  • MrsAtaxxia

He looks like young Ethan Hawke, only far more…groomed and…sterilized? I prefer scruffier, plaid-clad version from Reality Bites, but man that is a very sharp suit.

    • kimmeister

I can see that, although “young Christian Slater” is what popped into my head first.

  • Diego!

She is gorgeous, and I agree on the dress, plus an all white dress and shoes means walking down the aisle and not the red carpet. He looks great. I love love love his suit. Bring one for me! 😀 At first I thought he was Zac Effron, but then I read and noticed he is just similar to Zac.

  • Karen Belgrad

I think her dress would look stunning on Lucy Liu. On her, it comes across boring, which is pretty amazing for that much skin.

    • sagecreek

This is so weird…I hope it’s just my monitor, but I gave you a vote up and instead of showing up as “1”, it’s showing up as a -1! Why????

  • Garcia Loca

It’s like a homemade craft project involving old-school waffle towels.

  • GorgeousThings

I’m sorry, they both strike me as Flavor of the Month. Come September the lenses will flip to the next Next Thing.

  • Her night to be bold, not her night to wear a repurposed bath robe tucked, rolled and held in place with boob tape. I’m not scandalized, but I’m not in love. He is looking well groomed but is somehow giving me 80s James Spader.

    • Mazenderan

I’d like it more if he were giving me 80s James Spader

  • filmcricket

She looks like the Audrey-bot (with worse make-up) and that dress looks like it’s made out of waffle cone.

I have no idea who he is, but that jacket screams ‘valet parking’ to me.

    • jen_vasm

Something evil is happening on the side of that dress (well, the side with a side). She tired valiantly, but the dress is simply not designed with the human form in mind.

  • elemspbee

    audreybot 2.0

  • MarieLD

I only saw a glimpse of President Obama on Jay Leno last week, but it was a clip of him walking out and then sitting down. He knew that if you’re standing, the suit is buttoned, and when you sit, you unbutton it. I pointed it out to my sons.

  • barbarienne

I would like her dress better if it fit properly. It’s the sort of look that has to fit perfectly in order to work.

I am bothered by the white piping on his suit. It says “doorman” to me.

    • Getoverit

Its like the breast on the pics right is sticking out to the side in an odd pointy way. A for effort on the dress but the fit and material are awful.

      • barbarienne

Yes, that was exactly the spot I was looking at. “What is happening on her left side?”

Waffle fabric or no, this could have been a superhero outfit if it had been tailored to her properly.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

HE’s kind of got a Sheen/Estevez thing going on in his look and styling (the hair, the skinny tie…) Nothing wrong with it, I just keep looking at him and seeing someone else. SHE looks great again – I agree with all you say about the dress, but she’s rocking another totally different look. I continue to be interested to see what next with her, so that has to be a good thing!

  • MoHub

Is her dress made of paper towels? Either that or a chenille bedspread.

    • ashtangajunkie

      Yes, it’s Bounty-chic.

      • kimmeister

I just imagined her hurtling herself heroically through the air to save the day the moment someone else spills a drink.

        • Celandine1

OK you made me spew my diet coke. I never learn, no eating or drinking when reading TLo or the BKs!

    • Jacob Bowen

THANK YOU! I was thinking super quality toilet paper!

  • marlie

I rather like her dress, but I think her makeup – especially the brows – are a teensy bit too severe. regardless, she looks beautiful. I’d have given her a 7.5. He… great potential with that suit, but poor execution. Totally agree with his score.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Maybe it’s because I miss her, but this is the second time she’s giving an Audreybot vibe. It’s odd, because they could easily play as sisters, but there’s something about Lily’s attitude and general vibe that makes it hard to sell these kind of looks.

Other than that, she’s as fabulous as ever.

    • marlie

Funny… Lily here looks more like she could be the Audreybot’s sister than her REAL sister. I still contend that they look absolutely nothing alike.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I love LOVE that dress. He looks like a bobblehead.

  • MilaXX

No quibbles with the scores for her. She needs to send that dress back to Audrey-bot Ronney Mara. I would down grade him to a 6/10 as well. The suit needs to be better fitted. It appears to be a decent suit but he’s making it look cheap and sloppy.

    • ashtangajunkie

The suit looks more H&M than Dior Homme.

  • ashtangajunkie

I really like that she’s willing to “go there,” so to speak. She tries new looks and always looks polished. However, that is a lot of visible oblique for a dress. Good advertising for her pilates studio though.

  • NoveltyRocker

She’s pretty competent at the face posing but I just feel so much relief when I see a shot in which genuinely smiles. She’s starring in a YA adaptation, the JLO level fierce face just looks a bit much.

  • I luv his outfit, every piece. I don’t like anything about her dress. I am glad that a heavier brow is back in, I think the face looks so much better with a decent brow.

  • Tamara Hogan

    Who embalmed Lily Collins?

  • Anniebet

Do not like his suit. Or her dress. But her face is close to perfection, until I noticed the need for some eyebrow taming.

  • SewingSiren

They make a very beautiful pair. I love the fabric of the dress It looks to be a very heavy cotton piqué, which is perfect for summer. I think it would have been more elegant if the cut outs were less open. I think his lapel piping is very sharp.

    • Donna Tabor

I think it’s cotton pique, too, and since I’ve owned dresses made of it, I don’t think of it as “heavy”. It’s cool and comfortable for summertime, and therefore perfect for this time of year.

  • Claudia Berry

It looks like the dress was designed to remind us of the ripped dress Keira Knightley wore at some premiere, where her bony chest was showcased for all to see.

  • Anne At Large

Audrey-bot called, she wants her look back.

  • formerlyAnon

I like his lapels and his grooming. She’s showing too much of the wrong slashes of skin – it just looks precarious. But I’d give her 7/10 and him 7.5/10 for a combined score of 7.25. Mostly because neither of them look like they’d be out of place if the restaurant they stopped in for dinner had actual tablecloths, salad forks and glassware for water and a change of wine with every course.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I would like her dress a lot more if it weren’t so lumpy at the side seams and a color, any color. He’s cute, whoever he is, but needs an undershirt. Ah, I can feel my complexion improving as I type.

  • conniemd

Yet another boring black tie on a white shirt. Sigh

  • Anathema_Device

I like that one shot of her from the back, with her face in profile. If the rest of the looks were that gorgeous, I’d be on board. The front is just kind of rumply and sad. I might bump him up to a 7.5. I think he looks pretty good. I agree on your deductions, but I just wouldn’t deduct as much.

So glad to see a female star with strong brows. My French/Italian brows approve.

  • nannypoo

She has an interesting and beautiful face, but she looks a little colorless here. She needs a little blush. He looks like he’s wearing one of those plastic hair wigs.

  • ThaliaMenninger

So The Prisoner escaped and slashed a nurse’s uniform on his way out?

  • bellafigura1

    They are other-worldly.

  • largishbearishAtlish

and rising from Crypt #32-b for this evenings RC is…(I refuse to scroll back to look up her boring name). She looks so…dead and dull. He looks like an extra from PS 432’s Great Gatsby production (mom made the jacket!) yawn

  • AnniNoone

Don’t they get an extra point for giving awesome FACE? You usually only see that caliber of FACE on magazine covers.

  • Trisha26

I think those are ribs, not abs, and that’s disturbing. The dress looks way too old for her. I’d say send it to Rooney Mara. I love that he took a chance with that suit but anything with piping like that won’t ever remind me of the original Prisoner series with Patrick McGoohan

  • In_Stitches

A 6!?!! I think she’s shutting it down, killing it, owning it, all of the above. I love the pure white look against her pale skin, the angles of the straps/cut outs, drastically revealing yet tasteful at the same time…I think she’s killing it.

  • elzatelzabelz

Rooney Mara does not need a double.

  • bertkeeter

    Dress is a train wreck!

  • ankali

Imma swim against the tide here and say that I think she looks amazing: very crisp, and totally carrying off the sexiness. She reminds me of PJ Harvey, though, so I might be influenced by that into having different expectations than I should of Lily (movie star vs. musician fashion).

I would have preferred black pumps, but one can’t have everything.

    • filmcricket

      Polly Jean, excellent call. Yes.

  • MzzPants

Boy, she really HAS been pursuing her version of the Audrey-bot, hasn’t she? I agree that a bit of taming would be more suitable for her.

  • quiltrx

    His jacket is pretty magical.
I find that odd line above the waistline on her exposed flesh very distracting. If the diagonal keyhole had not plunged so deeply, and her torso was covered, this might have been okay.
Except that it’s made from kitchen towels.

  • guest2visits

One slash would have been a little classier, and possibly would have made the fabric hang less lumpy. But she is gorgeous. I just don’t like the jacket piping. Although it looks better buttoned.

  • WittyCism

    Why, it’s Katniss and Peeta!

  • i think you guys were a little harsh with lily. her makeup here is perfection. her ample brows are shaped beautifully here, her eyes have just enough sparkle, and her mouth is defined as a luscious cupid’s bow. i like the dress, and the deep side part with bone-straight hair is giving rooney mara a run for her money. she has never looked better.

  • I think this dress required different fabric and it would have been fun

  • Eric Stott

It may be the hands in his pockets but the jacket fits terribly when it’s buttoned. Maybe an idea better in concept than execution.

  • Aurumgirl

I fear white pumps — as in lost generation of the 80’s white pumps — are making a big comeback. I just want to remind you that Kathleen Turner had to kill Patty Hearst over a pair. So let’s not let this trend go any further.

  • amanda lynn

Rooney Mara’s gonna be so pissed when she sees that someone took her dress….

  • DominoEstella

As much as I dislike the dress, she looks good in it.. but yes, it’s just a weird dress.

  • I’d give her a 9. Love it all, except for the tendency toward unibrow. Just a few hairs on each side would make a HUGE difference and she’d still have the very strong brow line.

I’d give him a 6. The suit seems to be well-fitting, but the color does nothing for those eyes, and that jacket is just sad. Black and white is simply too strong a color combination for him. Maybe a nice grey, with a pastel shirt and colored tie. Or a lightened version of navy. Maybe a blue-green tie to bring out the color of his eyes? Then I’d follow him around and slap his hands any time he unbuttons the jacket or tries to put his hands in his pockets.

    So, 7.5?

  • Imasewsure

I don’t know… I like the dress on her and I like the idea of the suit for him even though it seems off… would have like to see it buttoned up. They score much higher in my tally

  • Stacy Feng

Personally, I think Lilly looks better with LESS make-up, am I the only one?
