Lady Gaga in Saint Laurent in West Hollywood

Posted on August 15, 2013

Oh, dear. Steffi fell asleep in her fingerpaints again.

Lady Gaga at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, California.

At the risk of being lumped in with all those mean bloggers you seem to hate lately, honey, we don’t think this look is working for you at all.  We’re worried, dear. Stay right there and we’ll come and get you. Then we’ll go to Sephora together and do something about your makeup. Won’t that be fun?

I dunno, apart from the paint thing she looks so like, young and healthy. That makes me happy.

    • Valdri8

Wow, I thought just the opposite: I think that she looks very sad and stressed out.

    • KC

I agree, she looks pretty. If it wasn’t for the paint (and kinda the coat) she would look like a really cute, normal, slightly messy, girl with a weird coat on.

  • StellaZafella

This is very like the face paint used in her latest vid single that just got leaked…

    • sweatpantalternative

But it’s not a look one tries to recreate in one’s own bathroom, without the video shoot army of stylists and set directors.

  • Sarah

That first pic – she has a phantom leg thing going on there, which is highly confusing. Like I thought she was dressed as a pegleg pirate, but that’s a human leg, and that human leg doesn’t look like it even goes with the girl behind her, and, oh, whatever. Wash your face.

    • kimmeister

I second your confusion! The dark human legs right next to her look like they magically appeared out of nowhere.

    • Constant Reader

Me too! I thought she was going for Crayola Pirate. Or something.

  • I think she is wearing the makeuip to draw attention AWAY from that horrible hot outfit.

  • hughman

    • Sarah

Hehe! But you know, I’d be able to get on board with fun-time makeup stuff if it was done as well as the sainted Mr. Gauguin. Unfortunately, I think it’s more like TLo’s assessment – fell asleep in paint. Half assed just looks it no matter what.

    • GorgeousThings

      Wasn’t that a Rhianna song?

    • SophiaPehawkins

“What are you, a pervert?!! I was married for 45 years, I never even saw my husband’s gauguins!”

    • Paigealicious

She used to be a Koons, but now the Koons is her.

  • Jessica Wyatt

I think that first picture is actually kind of striking. In a good way. But it’s just so “I’M AN ARTIST. GET IT? SEE THE PAINT? THAT MEANS I’M AN ARTIST.”

    • CommentsByKatie

Yeah, this. It’s kind of eyerollingly obvious, isn’t it? I love her but this is kind of a sad stunt.

      • Jessica Wyatt

Right? I loved her pre-egg days.

  • Rand Ortega

    Clown Dracula.

  • LadyCelia

It is August in Los Angeles. Unless an asteroid has hit the earth, plunging it into a nature-produced nuclear winter (and no one told me), it is just not cold enough in L.A. for that outfit. Ever.

  • Sobaika

Just when it was getting boring and I wondered what Stefani was up to… I realized this is the very last thing that needed to be seen. Go back into hiding, girl. Please.

  • homofascist

Is her next leaked single called “Tries Too Hard”? Ugh. And seriously, I will ask again – is it suddenly mid-winter in L.A.?

  • Because, ART.

  • Joyce VG

Woah…this is suspenseful. What she got under there?

  • Tatiana Luján

This is going to sound weird, but I think she looks really pretty with that warpaint going on on her face. Her skin looks great, her face looks fresh and rested and the clothes are interesting.
I feel ridiculous for tsaying this.

    • KayInSF

No, I totally agree! She looks gorgeous and healthy!

    • formerlyAnon

I agree she looks great, personally. But the makeup looks half assed compared to what we’ve come to expect from her.

    • Synnamin

I’m with you 100%. She looks fantastic (if too warm??) – happy and healthy and fun. Maybe she was playing with all those kids behind her?

  • marlie

She let a 4 year old draw on her face with markers.

Seriously, though, she doesn’t look… well. It legitimately concerns me that she doesn’t look half as “put together” as she usually does, batshit crazy as it may be.

    • ankali

Right? The ultra-fabricated, super-calculated, overly-polished craziness at least represents a sense of purpose and drive. She looks depressed to me here.

    • NC_Meg

Apparently she (or maybe someone in her camp) said that her look will be more toned down now. I hope it gets better than this because, Steffi, this isn’t working for you.

  • geans

Dunno: Trade those pants for leggings and this is how I’d dress everyday if I could.

  • Dylgeah

I feel like she has a whole secret life where she is able to walk around in the world like a “normal” and no one recognizes her. Kind of brilliant to be so ridiculous the rest of the time.

  • DilettanteDeconstructed

My first thought was that Amanda Bynes dyed her hair dark and got loose in public. :

Lady Gaga, I don’t understand you at all.

    • demidaemon

Don’t worry; Amanda is still in the psych ward, keeping her safe from herself and us safe from her.

  • unbornfawn

    Oh, that’s bad.

  • SewingSiren

Now she’s going all Leigh Bowery on us. In picture one I though that she had some how managed one brown foot. Very cubist.

  • schadenfreudelicious

I find her entire schtick exhausting, she looks like a clown about to flash someone. Also given others in the photos are wearing shorts and flipflops, that must be some serious Saint Laurent stank cape happening

  • mishka

I can kinda get behind this, though I wish she had done something else with her hair — a sleeker hairstyle, maybe?

  • Micaela Cannon

I would love to see Gaga shock the world by going out in a great fitting pair of jeans, some killer (although not literally, as her usual tastes would dictate) shoes, and a nice top, with great hair and fresh faced make up. …..It’s the only thing she could do that would blow my mind at this point.

    • imspinningaround

You should see her W cover with the Saint Laurent sequin jacket and jeans. She looks BEAUTIFUL.

      • NC_Meg

        I LOVE those photos.

  • bassfemme

I love Gaga very much, but everything is wrong. The cloak could work- in January and without those peg pants. The shoes, well I’m very sick of them. Get a new shocker shoe. The makeup? Reminds me of an old Rolling Stones cover making fun of the Cyndi Lauper’s unusual-ness, but CL actually looks better.

  • Bexxx

I hate her and think she’s an attention-seeking, exploitative racist, so I suppose I can’t judge her fairly. That aside, this is the look she sported in her recently released lyrics video for her new song, featuring Shannel, Morgan McMichaels, Willam (looking insanely beautiful as usual), Detox, and Shangela, along with some other popular non-RPDR performers in the WEHO drag circuit. In the video it seems that ol’ Shangie wasn’t actually performing that night but caught wind of the filming and got there as fast as possible to catch the publicity- she’s wearing a damn white sheet and TERRIBLE makeup meant to mimic Gaga’s here. Hilar. Luv huh. Love all of them.

    • Iva

I am just. So. Done. After the whole Burqa piece, it’s really just time for her to go away already or at least shut the fuck up and listen to criticism from Islamic women…which she won’t. So, seriously, Steffo, fuck off.

  • Lola Channing

You know that three-headed dog Cerberus that guards Hell? This is their mom.

  • rh33

“Hi! You’ll like Amy. She’s an Artist!” (Toy Story 2)

  • Teresa

Pretentious. Her attempts at standing out and creating “art” have become so juvenile. This is coming from somebody who found her a breath of fresh air when she first came onto the scene. Now she’s just a walking contradiction of everything she preached.

  • clatie

This is HILARIOUS. I haven’t laughed so hard in YEARS. Thank you, silly lady.

  • That young girl in the pink shorts (1st pic) is texting and tweeting as fast as she can — “U won’t believe who I’m standing next to!!”

And the lady in the 3rd picture is saying to her companion in the hat, “I don’t have a clue who she is, but everyone is taking her picture, so I will too and we’ll ask questions later.”

  • Joe J

Remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer invented a makeup gun with a “whore” setting? This looks like Gaga bought said gun and invented a new setting called “ksquvijazywx”.

    • tween00

I think of that episode often. The “whore” setting seems to be used a lot. (Oh god. I’ve turned into my mother)

  • Imasewsure

Sorry Stephie but feel free to look like an idiot… just don’t expect us to be fine with it

  • frannyprof

In pic#1 it looks like she’s missing a leg. Had me worried for a sec.

    • conniemd

I noticed that immediately, I still haven’t figured out where her left leg went.

  • Anniebet

At least she gives us bitches something to point at and poke fun. I’m wondering what’s in her left hand in the first pic.

    • Sarah

      Mechanical pencil…of Great Artistic Significance.

  • capybara_cafe

She could have at least run a lint brush over that thing. I don’t find her to be fashion forward and artistic. More like someone just trying to see what stupid s*%t they can get away with in the name of fashion.

  • LaSylphide

Lady GaGa … St. Laurent … Isn’t that an oxymoron?

  • GorgeousThings

Yeah, I’ll give her the weird Pierrot-after-a-bender-look thing in exchange for her being healthy again.

  • largishbearishAtlish

I was thinking more of an off, off, off, off, off-broadway production of Godspell, in someones basement..

  • MilaXX

I think she’s having trouble transforming to a new look. This mess ain’t working at all.

  • Did she have a little work done or am I being paranoid?

    • Susan Bigler

      You are NOT being paranoid.

    • formerlyAnon

This is not the first photo I’ve seen of her in recent months which gave me the impression she’s had her bite corrected or chin enhanced or something. I don’t have a good enough eye for such things to be sure, though.

      • Laylalola

I agree. I don’t have the eye, either, but I do remember thinking before her chin / underbite was weirdly almost exactly like Marilyn Manson’s, and suddenly it’s just not anymore.

  • elirt

I actually thought at first glance that it was a kid with paint on their face. LG as a brunette makes her look so much younger, softer, and less stiff.

  • crash1212

I’m kind of loving what’s going on from the neck down.

  • JDreesen

i’m just going to assume this is some kind of walking advertisement for that other lady’s Kickstarter campaign.

(yeah, i said it – sorry Other Lady…can’t remember your name.)

  • Not loving this incarnation, but the good thing with Gaga is give it 15 minutes and she’ll find something else. I think I like that coat though.

  • TonyGo

Remember that Cheri Oteri character from Saturday Night Live, Collette Reardon? This.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

This is not edgy. It’s just dumb. Hope she gets back to edgy again.

  • rks

Why don’t you just sing your songs and stop trying so hard to be so “out there”…I am so embarrassed for you Gaga. Also if your hip was so badly damaged and with a “big hole in it” how the hell are you wearing those shoes??

  • adnama79

Sweetie, honey, wear more supportive shoes. They make cute ones, even edgy ones, with actual heel and arch support.

  • Laurie Landry

OK, paint aside…this look does not say I’m young and it’s summer time.

  • KikiAvocado

Anna Nicole clown makeup… that all I can think of…

  • formerlyAnon

Is she struggling for a lower maintenance public look? I like the clothes, think the hair is fine but suffers in comparison to her much more mannered and slick presentations. The makeup looks half-assed compared to her usual standards.

  • minnye

normally can’t stand her style but I like everything about this… I’m sure it’s just another calculated Statement (w/ capital S) but this look is kinda natural and free spirited to me.

  • norseofcourse

I know it’s supposed to be art, but all I see is Cheri Oteri on SNL when she played the pharmacy lady.

  • PeaceBang

I think she’s flailing. One can’t keep up with the insane fabulosity that was Lady GaGa of the “Bad Romance” era, and she doesn’t know how to transition gracefully to what’s next. I do believe she has jumped the shark with “Applause.” She’s a talented lady + I wish her the best, but this ain’t it.

    • hellkell

That single is the most boring, bog-standard gay disco anthem I’ve heard in a while.

  • NinjaCate

Ugh. I know that the face paint is her “thing” the same way that the prosthetics were her thing the last go-round, but she looks RIDICULOUS. Between the choice of colours and the placement on her face, she looks like an actual clown.

    • Guest

Exactly. Sadly, I think when McQueen died she really lost some of her image omph.

  • MzzPants

I’m reserving judgement until her whole new publicity scheme reveals itself in the fall. I AM glad to see her evolve out of her last image, because I believe the ability to explore new paths will keep her in the industry for the long hall.

    • Paigealicious

      Like Madonna…? :

      • MzzPants

Ouch! Maybe what I mean is that if she’s going to keep ME interested, she needs to keep evolving. Madonna still gets my attention once in a while, but not because of her music.

  • quiltrx

The fabulous cape actually almost keeps me from seeing the nightmare of shit on her face!

  • snarkykitten

It reminds me of some other musician’s album cover (the one where the chick is covered in magic marker) & I don’t think that’s a good thing,

  • Sally3000

I’m getting a 1982 vibe. I don’t know if I’d say I’m a fan of the face paint, but I think she looks pretty great. Maybe it’s the hair, the lips, the smiling, I’m not sure, but I think she looks great.

    • Laylalola

1982 exactly — Boy George // Culture Club is what came to mind

  • Levedi

    Hogwarts art student?

  • bertkeeter

    Not her again!

  • HVM

I’m bored with her now and in the recent pictures, she looks bored with her shtick as well.

  • thecitysleeps

She seems so desperate to overthrow Katy off her throne.

  • altissima

What’s happened to her left foot in the first pic???

  • Did she get a septum nose piercing?

I kinda dig the face paint but if she’d mixed it with clothes that didn’t make her look like a black lump without legs it would maybe have worked.

  • Kathy_Marlow

Can TLo come and pick me up and take me to Sephora? That sounds like great fun! Then shoes after?

    • hellkell

A Bitter Kitten shopping trip with TLo would be beyond fabulous.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Soooo…. is this gonna be a look for her now? I get that she did the crazy makeup for her “Applause” video, but she’s NOT on the set of the video anymore. So you know – time to get some makeup remover on that face there, Steff.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I just downloaded the single last night, and it really is cool!

  • VictoriaDiNardo

Well, she’s been hanging out – literally – in the woods up here in the Hudson Valley with Marina Abramovic, chanting and hugging crystals ( raising $$ for Marina’s performance art center in Hudson – video on Kickstarter and vimeo I think ) and I think Marina hypnotized her or something…she’s even wearing her hair the same way!

They are making me more afraid to go into the woodlands than the deerticks!

  • Sara Brams-Miller

She should just take all the makeup off and go sans. I think that nude look did her MUCH better than the drunk, high clown look she’s going for now.

  • Danielle

  • Lily-Rygh

Forget the make-up issue — WHERE IS HGH??

  • What in the name of Anna Nicole Smith is this supposed to be?

  • Meredith

    I….like it… :

  • kittenwithaquip

This reminds me of that video showing Anna Nicole Smith in clown paint, vacant-eyed and obviously fucked-up. I honestly cannot get that image out of my head.

  • Sushy Gooroo

She looks boring and very forced to be somehow “original”. I never liked any of her looks, but now she seems to lack confidence as well. This kind of make up does not go with relatively conservative clothes and “hippie girl working in a bookshop” hair.

  • Ummy

I actually kinda like it. I think it’s the second picture that draws me in, with that smile. She looks just… relaxed. Or maybe relieved. Yeah, she’s got the colorful face paint (which as an artist I don’t mind), but everything else seems very low-key. It’s a nice change.

  • It reminds me of the face-paint I read about to deter facial recognition technology. Not that it works on the paparazzi. I appreciate it for the sheer “I don’t give a fuckitude.”
Also, I like that she’s a brunette. When did that happen?

  • nicewilliams

Isn’t she strictly a performance artist now a days? That means that at all moments, she is… art.

  • guest2visits

The cape-tarp thing makes me sad. Almost as much as the face paint. All that hair tumbling down would be nice with a dramatic lip and eyes; just not this dramatic.

  • Jessica Rose

Looks like a rainbow black eye.

  • Adrianna Grężak

This is what my hair looked like when I dyed it by myself
