Kerry Washington in Giambattista Valli at the 2013 TCA Summer Press Tour Party

Posted on August 05, 2013

Who’s up for a little pattern-mixing? Miss Kerry clearly is. We’re not on board.

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington attends the 2013 TCA Summer Press Tour – Disney/ABC Television Group Party in Beverly Hills, California in a Giambattista Valli halter dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps, a Nancy Gonzalez clutch, and Vhernier earrings.

Giambattista Valli Resort 2014 Collection

It’s like we’re looking at two halves of two separate decent outfits. We like the top half and we like the bottom half (although the shoes bug), but we don’t see how these two halves go together. We’re big fans of pattern-mixing when it’s done well. To us, “done well” means it looks deliberate and thought-out, rather than half-assed and arbitrary. Sorry, Miss Kerry. This outfit falls into the latter category. You look like you got dressed with a blindfold on, dear.

She looks 30 years younger!!! OMG… I’m not fond of the outfit, neither the shoes but she looks spectacular!

    • Untangled

So… she looks like a toddler?

  • Miranda

Her makeup is ALWAYS so on point!

    • http://visceralresponse.com/ visceral response

Even the unblended line across under her jawline?

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I’m not loving how that skirt is shaping the lower half of her body, either. I too, love a great mix of patterns, and in theory this should work. It just misses in reality.

    • oekmama

It doesn’t work coz the patterns are going in opposite directions.

      • Rhonda Shore

It’s not flattering (even though of course she looks beautiful, as always)…prefer the model’s version.

  • porcupie

I think, like with Diane Kruger, that I constantly give her passes for weird outfits that don’t quite work because she’s so stunning and lovely.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

Perfection from head to waist. Oy vey from waist to floor.

  • Jessica Freeman

It just looks so…heavy…if she would have just worn the top from the model pic as a dress, it would have been really cute. Neck up she is looking really great though.

  • teensmom99

I think there’s something off about the skirt which is the big problem. If it were a more flattering cut and if she had a belt, I could like this.

    • gabbilevy

A belt could have saved this.

    • martha

Yes. A belt would help a lot!

  • Karen Belgrad

I’m not sure if it’s the halter, showing off her tiny frame… or the ginormous up-do, but the whole thing is coming off VERY bobblehead!

    • Tamara Hogan

      YES.

    • Anniebet

That was my first take as well. She’s another celeb that needs to take extra care to avoid this. Perhaps the makeup is a shade too light?

  • MilaXX

I like the outfit, but hate the shoes and bag, Also congrats! Mrs. Asomugha

I was on the fence, until I the close up shots, then I was liking it. But as soon as the shots went back to full body, I swung back to “meh”. The shoes and bag really take it away from a breezy, interesting, summer look. That face, though!

    • alyce1213

Right. The fabric detail is gorgeous, the texture is luxe, the color is beautiful. It’s probably much better in person, but it doesn’t hold up at a distance in photos.

  • RuthGo

I think I kind of love it.

  • Catiline

Nooooo… she looks SO BEAUTIFUL, but that horrid skirt draws the eye in all the wrong ways.

  • Danielle

Scrolldown fug. I wish she kept the paisley pattern through the skirt.

  • nannypoo

This is really unflattering. I was thinking that if she added a belt and boob support it might work, but I don’t think it’s worth the effort.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Those are SOME eyelashes! The outfit doesn’t make me twitch but I wouldn’t call it successful, either. Those shoes are awful.

  • marlie

I love the two patterns, and I might even like them together, if the dress/outfit didn’t seem so horribly ill-fitting. It makes her body look shapeless.

Also, her makeup looks terrible. The foundation looks a little chalky, and you can see where they stopped blending it on her neck.

  • Qitkat

Nope, nope, nope. The model has it done right, with the paisley print on the dress with the scallop outlines in red, and the separate head scarf; in total, a pretty cool resort look. Kerry’s outfit needed at the least that same solid red scallop delineation between the top and the skirt, with a longer top over the skirt. The proportions are all wrong. She looks lovely as usual from the neck up, although those fake eyelashes are a little cartooney.

  • ushoda

i’m such a bad person xD

i readed “It’s like we’re looking at two slaves”

  • granite5

    What? I love this!

  • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Did she get cast on Dexter as a surprise? That skirt looks like one of his blood spatter paintings.. :)

    Love the top though.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I was thinking she was on the SCANDAL set when Huck and Quinn (mostly Quinn) took a drill to Billy Chambers as “interrogation.”

  • stubbornthoughts

MY EYES. Scrolling through these pictures actually made my eyes hurt and feel dizzy. Apparently, this pattern mixing is my kryptonite.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I love it from the waist up. Hair, makeup, neckline, bodice… Lovely. But the skirt of that dress and the shoes absolutely ruin it. Oh, Miss Kerry. It’s a Scandal all right.

  • HVM

I think she looks amazing but then again my girl crush on her does make me biased.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Hair and makeup are great though. Wish the top was paired with a pencil skirt or some pants.

  • alyce1213

I love the fabrics, they are gorgeous. I just think the proportion of the skirt to the top is too great. A lower waistline, maybe even a dropped waistline, and slimmer skirt would have been better. She’s rockin’ the big lashes and her lipstick color is perfection.

  • julnyes

She is giving face, but that outfit is a misstep.

  • amber.

lies & fallacies she looks fantastic. i’m not on board with the shoes but i love love love the dress.

    • Rebecca Jay

I do too. The whole thing, both prints, mixed together, sans-a-belt. Fantastic indeed.

  • formerlyAnon

She’s GORGEOUS. Not in love with the skirt pattern.

  • MzzPants

    Love the makeup.

  • DamH

It’s just doesn’t make sense why would anyone mix then together.

  • melanie0866

I disagree. I wouldn’t wear it, but she looks terrific. We all complain when people wear boring stuff, and then someone tries to mix it up a little and we complain about that.

    • demidaemon

It’s all right to try different things, so kudos to Miss Kerry here for that. However, it is our sworn duty as BKs to call out what doesn’t work, and this does not. The patterns don’t go, they compete with each other, and the skirt design is weird and unflattering. Sometimes boring is good if it works; sometimes wacky is good if it works. When something doesn’t work, it’s bad.

  • amanda lynn

lollipop. she’s shrinking into a lollipop.

  • guest2visits

She’s beautiful and I like the dress – I just think the model’s version is better.

  • crash1212

Well, I like it the way she mixed better than the model version. I don’t hate this. She’s a beauty, isn’t she?

  • Therese Bohn

I can count her eyelashes! She’s lovely, but I do like the original better

  • rajf

Is it just me, or is that a creepy manicure? It looks like she dipped her fingertips in blood.

  • Imasewsure

There’s also the problem of a great pattern on top and a boring ugly one on the bottom.

    • alyce1213

I agree the print on top is great, but I don’t think the bottom is as much ‘boring ugly’ as it is secondary and low-key, and should be used much less. The bottom fabric can’t compete with the top, it should be used to complement.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I have less of a problem with the pattern matching (although the model did it better) and more with the fact that this combination completely obliterates her waist.

  • YoungSally

My first instinct (those over 40 please help) is that there is something wrong with my TV and I have to play with the horizontal and vertical buttons at the same time.

    • alyce1213

      Try wiggling the antenna.

  • pookiesmom

Her face is outshining the outfit for me, which is not a bad thing. She looks so gorgeous I actually think she’s making the clothes work. Not a ringing endorsement for the outfit, but enough, I think.

    • Lilak

Ahh … finally found someone to say “agree” to! You read my mind.

  • fursa_saida

Her posing here is so cute it’s ruining me.

  • ankali

I don’t mind the patterns together, but this isn’t flattering to her shape. Also, I don’t like how her hair is making her head look like a rectangle. Great makeup minus the eyelashes, though.

  • quiltrx

I think it’s the proportions that make this bizarre. If her top were a shorter version of what the model has on, with the hem hanging down over the skirt…so we were getting mostly paisley and some stripe…I think this would be a lot better. The grandpa waistline is pretty bad–even on her, as skinny as she is.

  • Sadie-Ann

It’s like the bottom half of the outfit has static.
