Katy Perry in Lucca Couture in NYC

Posted on August 13, 2013

Wow. SERIOUS ’90s rocker chick flashback, Katy.

Katy Perry at Z100 radio station in New York City to promote her new album “Prism” in a Lucca Couture velvet dress.

Lucca Couture Velvet Skater Dress

Sarah said to tell you she’ll meet you at Lilith Fair, okay?

It’s cute, though. You could argue it’s a look that’s passing into classic status and may never really go out of style. We honestly can’t think of one bitchy thing to say about it. We really love the boots.

  • Emily Dagger

If this had an empire waist, it would BE my 1997 Christmas dress.

(Which I believe I bought at Robinson’s-May, for somewhere in the neighborhood of $30. Back in my day… [shakes fist, clutches pearls])

    • Terri Ellis

I has this dress too! Same color velvet but with a square neck and gold buttons. Wore it to my 1994 sorority formal. Does this mean we are back to crushed velvet being a thing?

      • d4divine

      • Emily Dagger

Please, sweet baby Jebus, I hope not.

        • ankali

I saw (and wore) entirely too much crushed velvet in high school and college to ever think of it as a fabric that should be worn by anyone out of high school and college.

      • Heather

I’m really good at going through my friends’ closets and gently but firmly telling them what to get rid of. I recently did this for a friend and the AMOUNT of crushed velvet she had held on to, and even moved several times, was scary. I didn’t judge, but it all went to Goodwill.

      • Aurumgirl

And me too. New Year’s Eve, 1992. Except my crushed velvet had a print on it, and my boots were taller.

    • Danielle

I’m pretty sure I wore that whole outfit to a Christmas dance in 1993.

    • Liza Ortiz

I just have to say,Jordan, I love your work!

  • Karen Belgrad

That’s couture? I bought that same dress at Contempo Casuals in 1991… in several colors!

    • Heather

      Me too! OMG that fabric…..

    • Tanya Wade

Mine was in black, from the Victoria’s Secret Catalog. Aw, memories!

    • Catiline

      Contempo Casuals!! What a flashback.

    • LipstickForPigs

Lol, my very first thought was “Oh, is Contempo Casuals back then?”

    • MerBearStare

All it’s really missing are the bell sleeves.

      • zenobar

And a leather string choker. Bonus points if it has a large disc pendant of colored glass.

        • ankali

Sweet God, y’all are spot on. Maybe some really brown/maroon lipstick to go with?

          • Karen Belgrad

Ideally it would be Toast of New York lipstick by Revlon

          • ankali

Wow, you were rich back then. I was thinking something by Wet’n’Wild.

    • VictoriaDiNardo

That was my first thought too ….couture? Really? I suppose it covers a broad range of design skills…

    • tereliz

LOL, the only “couture” is in the name. I see clothes by this label in Urban Outfitter all the time. I had a similar dress in the 90s. And here I assumed it would never come back into style. What was I thinking? *eyeroll*

      • marlie

Interesting… And I thought that only real, legit couture clothing could use the name/word “couture.”

        • tereliz

The label doesn’t even really have a “look”, they just churn out cheap, trendy clothes. Lot of mullet dresses, lace, 90’s inspired on their site right now. Oh, look, a peplum dress! How bold!

        • Malice Grant

I’m not sure it’s like champaign. After all, Juicy put it on the inside of every waistband, making it the fashion equivalent of mom putting your name in your camp underwear.

          • marlie

Upon further reflection, I think only legitimate couturiers can present at couture fashion shows/weeks, but maybe there’s no regulation of the name, like it is for champagne.

    • marlie

And it doesn’t help that even the photo with the model looks like it’s from a generic catalog.

    • zenobar

Me too! I had one in emerald green as well. Replace her nylons for hole-y opaque black tights, switch out her footwear for reconditioned combat boots, ditch the belt, and throw on a black leather motorcycle jacket, and there you have my basic uniform of 1992-93.

      RIP, Contempo Casuals.

  • That large ass belt is doing her no favors; it’s hiding her awesome figure. Besides that, this will pretty much be my look for the upcoming Fall season. Pretty. Much. Minus that huge ass belt, of course.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

It’s August, Katy. I’m shvitzing just looking at you.

  • Its a great look for her. But MAN is that harsh lighting making her face look like its made of vinyl! Back off with the Klieg lights, dudes!

    • kmk05

I thought it was her makeup that was unflattering! Because damn that concealer is ugly. Maybe it’s a combination of both her preferred full coverage face and the lights?

      • demidaemon

The crazy eye stare isn’t helping her much in this department.

  • bunnieteeth

What the heck kind of top is she wearing under the dress? The strap looks really weird. It seems like too warm of an outfit to wear in August, however it’s been so chilly in Ohio I’ll just assume it is in NYC as well.

    • giddypony

I’m sort of loving the giant bra strap. It owns “I need scaffolding, dammit!”

  • Artesian_Belle

I wonder if the massive leather bra straps are part of the dress or her own addition?

    • bunnieteeth

I just pondered the same thing!

    • kmk05

That’s what I’m wondering too… Looks like something you’d find on Romwe! Steampunk goth style.

  • Miss_Led

The look in her eyes is just . . . odd.

    • NoveltyRocker

You may have glimpsed the look of Paula Deen.

  • Diego!

She looks fresh and happy! Tough the texture of velvet it’s not what I like in clothes, it does look great on her! I love her boots too. She looks great!

  • MilaXX

I can think of plenty of bad things to say. Bad makeup. The velvet dress looks cheap & the pantyhose give it an ice skater costume feel. It’s like something Michelle kwan would wear to do an interpretive free skate to West SIde Story.

    • love

    • Heather

I want to see Michelle and Tonya Harding duke it out.

    • Rand Ortega

  • stephbellard

    I’m a bitch, I’m a mother, I’m a child…

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I love love love your avatar. Gene and Roger are judging you, Katy. Judging you hard.

    • PinkySlinky

THANK YOU…the 1st thing to pop into my head upon seeing these pics

    • Bethany Roullett

Gah! And now I have this as my earworm for the day. But you’re totally right.

  • kmk05

Can we be bitchy about everything going on above the neck? her hair is lifeless and unstyled, and the Kim Kardashian concealer is too pink and particularly unflattering.

Oh If I could I’d just rip off everything she’s wearing and run off with it.

ETA: I really want those boots. Like, really.

  • gsk241

I had that belt in 1987.

    • majorbedhead

Me, too, except mine had fake turquoise stones in it. I wore it with my prairie skirt and a white, off the shoulder top. And cowboy boots. In Massachusetts.

  • The dress is whatever. The belt is hiddy, but the dress needs a belt, for sure. The things actually catching my eye are the industrial leather bra strap. Is that an outfit underneath the dress? Also, crazy eyes! I’m super curious as to where she is headed to or is coming from. I suspect that story is way more interesting than this little throwback frock. Love the boots, btw.

    • Heather

The boots are cute and also, MUCH better than the toeless version in the model photo. (Toeless boots = WTF?)

      • Adriana_Paula

Dude. Those boots are hurt-my-feelings ugly.

        • Adriana_Paula

I meant the model’s boots, of course.

          • Heather

I don’t understand toeless boots, except perhaps for that hour post-pedicure when one’s toe polish is still a bit squishy.

  • almondemy

I’m sorry, gentlemen, I am morally opposed to crushed velvet in FREAKING AUGUST.
I mean, seriously, she feels the need to roll up her dang sleeves.

  • Tatiana Luján

She’s perfect for this kind of look, but I wish the dress was a bit longer, because the proportions are a little off.

  • Fordzo

Crushed velvet gives me bad flashbacks.

  • crash1212

SO cute. She’d get high marks from me if for no other reason than she chose boots that covered her toes! Well done!

  • rebeemoon

Can someone tell where I can get those boots? Seriously.

    • Tracy_Flick

Agree with you there, I do love those boots.

  • Elbow21

One can only surmise that she is dressed as Xena the Warrior Princess under her dress. What else could that strap be?

    • Donna Tabor

      I know, right?

    • majorbedhead

      Maybe she’s packing heat.

  • Oh my goodness, is velour back?

  • eowyn_of_rohan

She’s that girl in tenth grade who told everyone in sight that she was really into Wicca after reading a description of it on an Angelfire website.

    • MartyBellerMask

      ((hiding now))

    • Heather

Except that the Internet didn’t exist in 1993.

  • shorty j

My mom gave me a belt that looked exactly like that when I was seven (my family had just moved to the Southwest) and I LOVED it. Coincidentally, it was 1991 at the time, but I’d still wear the crap outta that thing if I could.

  • I think I got that dress for my birthday in 1993. Huh.

  • teensmom99

Ummm, not exactly appropriate for NYC in August. . . .

  • Victor Beiramar Diniz

oh honey! when a dress is called a ‘skater dress’, let’s leave it to the skaters, shall we?

  • SewingSiren

One does not wear velvet in August (at least not on this side of the equator).

  • AmeliaEve

It’s cool and rainy in New York this week. That dress would not be too warm.

Maybe I’m just old, but I like that straight up rocker chick look. And the concho belt is pretty much a southwestern classic. It works well with the big buckles and the stack of silver bracelets. It’s really well put together.

    • sagecreek

Thank God, Amelia, I was starting to feel very lonely 🙂

  • MoHub

Glad she went with closed-toe boots.

  • queen b*tch

I am having serious flashbacks – teenage angsty moments to Alanis Morrisette, Alisha’s Attic and Shakespeares Sister, too much black eyeliner, dog collars, wet look hair, ripped fishnets…. ahhh happy days

  • Sonja Brisson

“Cheep cheep cheep” chirp all the fashionistas.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Just had a major flashback to high school. I had at least 2 crushed velvet shirts, one was a long sleeved forest green, the other a short sleeved apple green (why so much green, I don’t know).

I think that’s a cute dress, but I don’t get the huge straps showing. I thought at first it was from the purse, but now I think it must be an oddly designed bra strap with an extra large buckle.

    • Heather

Green was a very 90s color. I’ve only recently been able to wear it again (and going more teal these days).

  • HVM

    I’m not feeling this.

  • Julie Chase

I wore that dress in black to my Sophomore year Christmas formal.

  • stubbornthoughts

Can fashion please pole the public to find out if certain historical trends should be given CPR? Because I would’ve adamantly voted against this look.

  • bayusc

    Velvet in August?

  • Kate

Drew Berrymore had this dress in 1993, I think.

  • Lily-Rygh

    I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride…

  • d4divine

The nineties should stay in the nineties…why the heck is she wearing crushed velvet in August…the boots are too heavy…she looks like she is in costume. MAJOR FAIL

    • AmeliaEve

She always looks like she is in costume. I am just happy to see her branching out a little.

      • d4divine

Branching out?! This is not branching out…this is a rut and a shame. Lol

  • Lori

Not one bitchy thing to say about it? Not even about wearing maroon velvet in August and hose with those boots? Really?

  • Shawn EH

The hair’s tired, but the hose and the silver jewelry really enhance the dress.

  • Rand Ortega

Very Courtney Love circa Hole 1993.

  • bertkeeter

    Hmm…crushed stretch velvet….uh…NO!

  • Kate Andrews

All she needs is a ribbon choker.

  • Victoria Anzalone

Oh man. Flashbacks. I used to own this exact dress too.

  • Onika K Morris-Alleyne

Square neck and bell sleeves and I owned like 4 of this dress…

  • Cordelia_Gray

I’m pretty sure I had this entire outfit in the ’90s, but my Contempo Casuals version probably cost less than Katy’s belt.

    • Nondescript

Yes! I totally wore this dress to school dances when I was in, like, 10th grade. I felt SO SEXY. (As a result, I will forever love this style.)

  • tereliz

What’s happening with her bra? Did she not notice it was sticking out when she tried this dress on at Urban Outfitter’s?

  • marlie

The dress on the model screams “CATALOG.” I’m not loving it. This look should have stayed back in the 90s where it belongs.

  • bellafigura1

Sheer black stockings in those (divine) boots are not the way to go here, if I were able to even wrap my head around crushed red velvet in August. The boots are crying for an opaque tight or bare legs, like the editorial image.

  • sagecreek

I’m out of step, I can’t recall ever seeing her look this good.

  • I’m pretty sure that’s a tailored version of the Gwendolyn costume I wore for Halloween in 1999.

  • Tracy_Flick

I can think of a bitchy thing to say about it. It looks like she bought it at Hot Topic in 1993. Ugly and cheap-looking. The word “couture” has lost all meaning.

    Like the boots, though.

  • sarah jacobs

It’s the middle of August.,k too hot to even look at long sleeved crushed velvet black stockings and boots.

  • librarygrrl64

That’s a couture garment? It looks like a cheap velour dress from Kmart, circa 1995.

  • KikiAvocado

this just brought back all my repressed memories of 1994—- it is lacking a Blossom style hat and a choker…

  • formerlyAnon

I want her hair (and maybe makeup) to be harder edged for this dress. But I like the dress & boots, even if they’re not really seasonal. Especially not outside of the hours of 8 pm – 4 am.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

So crushed velvet is making a comeback? What bugs me is that she rolled up the left sleeve to reveal her bracelets and exposed the awful backside of the fabric. Next time push that sleeve up. I do have to say that I like this look overall.

  • alyce1213

Adorable, and even better that she wore great boots (I hate the ones with open toes).

  • Jeanne leCube

Le Chateau c.1994. I had this dress in several colours.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I, however, can think of several bitchy things to day about it. It is August and girlfriend is wearing a too short, too heavy, velvet dress with opaque tights and boots (although in December I will kind of love the boots). Unless she is a junkie with 0 percent body fat, this is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

  • susan6

I hope maroon or garnet or burgundy is having a moment. I like that color. Definite 90’s vibe, but she looks good. I kind of prefer her in cartoon mode, though…..I hope she’s not going to become some super-serious artiste any time soon.

  • muelonil

    Crushed velvet couture…huh.
Angela Chase would be so proud.

  • CommentsByKatie

Ugh, Katy. Crushed velvet and a cowboy belt? Really? I miss the pineapples and Christmas trees.

  • Fucksake, hose in August. Is that what this world is coming to?!?!

  • thecitysleeps

J’adore. I especially love the tights and boots combo.

  • Mazenderan

My inner 15 year-old is so happy right now! I can wear this again?!

  • Louise Bryan

OK, I know it’s bitchy, but I think it makes her look a bit like she took a nip at Alice’s “Eat me” cake that caused her to shoot up until her head hit the ceiling.

  • The Versatile Chef

Frankly? I’m just excited to see a ladystar wearing hosiery.

  • MartyBellerMask

Black velvet, and that soft, southern style……….

  • conniemd

I’d have said Katy Perry in Lucca Vintage not Couture. Very vintage look. Not summery though.

  • snarkykitten

noooo not velvet dresses again D:

  • amanda lynn

i’ll cut a biotch for those shoes.

  • I guess I must still resent the 90’s because this makes me miss Cartoon Katy. Not a fan of the look.

  • Claudia

I used to own a crushed velvet BODYSUIT in this exact colour…*shameface*

  • KayEmWhy

Have the same dress I bought it 1998. Classic. Info on the boots please.

  • pop_top

Perfectly 90s. I so wanted this dress in junior high – but mom said no. It looks good on her though.

“Crushed velvet. Which it turns out, can be uncrushed!”

  • chylde

She’s leaving the building where I work. Was a zoo on Monday morning!

  • NYCRecessionista

Makes me want to belt out some Four Non-Blondes …

  • KingCrazy

    Oh god, I hate this.

  • Aaminah Khan

…I would totally wear all of this. >__>

  • BPlease

The belt takes it into heinous territory to me. She’s too done up with the makeup to carry this look off.

  • Cz

I’m just glad she didn’t wear the open-toed boots. *mutterstupidestfootwearevermutter*

  • Imasewsure

    I covet those boots

  • Jacob Bowen

    NOT CRUSHED VELVET!!!!!!!! NO!!!!

  • Liza Ortiz

I had this same in dress in Ivory in 1993

  • Eileen Duffy

    I would wear it…. if I was 30 pounds lighter. 🙁
