Katy Perry in Emanuel Ungaro at the 2013 MTV VMAs

Posted on August 26, 2013

Darlings, the CIRCUS came to town last night! And all the little clowns and tumblers and sideshow freaks rolled out of their cars and onto the red carpet where they each demanded your love and attention, threatening at any time to expose their genitalia or fling their poop if you don’t give it to them.

i.e., The MTV Video Music Awards, of course.

Katy Perry attends the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in an Emanuel Ungaro animal print dress.

Emanuel Ungaro Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Jess Brown (WOMEN)

Oh, so the temporary grill is going to be a thing? Again? Try something new, kids.

We don’t mind the dress, although she’s surprisingly covered up for the VMAs. We realize she’s been working a more demure Katy for a while now, but still. It seems a little off. The slit’s too high paired with such a high-collared, long-sleeved top half. And those sleeves make her arms look big.

Actually, we do mind the dress a little, mainly because it’s so all over the place thematically. She’s a … leopard? Being attacked by bejeweled moths and dragonflies? Is this some sort of “Battles of the Animal Kingdom” thing in dress form? Are we supposed to take sides? Because as much as we consider ourselves cat people, we’ll probably always come down on the side of bejeweled dragonflies.

Also, if you’re the type of girl whose toes splay all over the place in a pair of naked 4-inch heels, then you’re probably not the girl to be wearing naked 4-inch heels. No one wants to see you gripping for all you’re worth all night.

A mess from head to finger toes.

    • Introspective

jesus wept for her toes. seriously.

  • Diego!

I like this dress on her… a lot. She looks gorgeous! This would have been a WERQ to me until I saw her teeth… WTF is this “temporary trend” we are seeing in music stars? Gee, get over it, it’s not flattering at all!

  • broke&fashionable

I think it’s just that the shoes are too small? How could you look down at your feet and think these shoes were okay?

Though I love less clown makeup Katy. That face doesn’t always need the shellac.

    • Sarah

Shoes on the model made the heavy, turtleneck top of the dress look more balanced. Not a dress for a naked shoe, even if it is summertime.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The grill thing completely kills this for me, and not in a good way.

    • Tess Danesi

I cannot agree more that the grill is an abomination but at least she appears to be wearing it somewhat ironically, given the face she’s making, at least I hope so. Madonna, on the other hand, seemed to be wearing it as earnestly as one can wear a grill and it made her look even more ridiculous. Maybe. I grasping for straws here.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Not a bit. I think you’re spot on in both cases. I simply want this micro trend to pass, immediately.

      • kmk05

But when did she even put it in? Like, were these pictures taken at different times? Did the photographers just nicely NOT photograph her as she was putting it on? *sighs* It’s no unsightly!

        • Montavilla

I watched the live feed as she was taking pictures. There was a stretch of wall with four or five distinct posing spots. She did the grill grimace in the first ones, then took out of the grill for the last posing area.

I didn’t like the grill at all, but I think maybe it makes thematic sense, since her latest single is called “Roar” and she’s dressed like a leopard. She looked like an animal baring her teeth when she posed.

          • kmk05

That actually does make sense. I’m just surprised no one snapped a shot of her taking it out since gossip rags love that stuff. Good for her, I guess!

          • Montavilla

It seemed like a very organized and disciplined photo shoot. Also, she was smart enough to turn her back to the cameras when she did it. (The video caught it, because it was shooting from a different angle.)

Incidentally, she didn’t put it in her bra. :) She handed it to an assistant.

          • kmk05

With that turtleneck, it would have been difficult! I am still awed at a turtleneck in August, haha.

          • Jacqueline Wessel

            Pity the poor assistant.

          • siriuslover

Yay, if only I can be an assistant and handle star saliva after they remove disgusting temporary dental appliances! oh, the life i am missing.

          • Montavilla

To be fair, any assistant worth her salt will always carry the necessities, including latex gloves, with her.

        The Importance of Earnest Grill-Wearing.

        • Tess Danesi

Thanks so much for my AM laugh out loud. I really needed that!

  • veriance

The toes were distracting for certain. I love those jeweled/golden dragonflies, but not on that dress.

  • clatie

The dress is almost matronly, especially for this event. It’s not terrible, it’s just a little “over the hill hooker”-ish. The grill is, of course, an abomination.

Her legs are so smooth. If I had legs like that, I’d be pantless at all times.

    • imspinningaround

Matronly? I think between the print, the slit, and all the embellishments it looks vulgar!

      • clatie

That’s where I was going with “over the hill hooker”. She’s the seasoned pro, with a heart of gold and a kid in private school.

        • Introspective

tonight on Lifetime TV after the premiere of project runway season 497: Hooker Moms!

          • clatie

            Season Pass please

    • conniemd

The back of the dress is total matronly boring. It’s just a leopard pattern dress with golden moths and dragonflies attached. Nothing about the design is unique.

    • Constant Reader

I got the same vibe — like I’m watching a movie from 1966 and she’s the sexy 40-year-old divorcee who just moved into the house at the end of the cul-de-sac.

  • Spicytomato1

While I like how her hair and makeup are understated, the whole look seems dated and aging to me. Aside from the grill, which just looks foolish to me.

  • HVM

She should ship those shoes off to Jen A.

    • kimmeister

Jen already has 27 pairs exactly like that.

  • Kate

Her toes are like the claws of the leopard she killed to make that dress, just waiting to attack any other poo-flinger who may stand in her way.

  • Jacquelyn

Her hair and makeup are decent but that dress hurts my eyes. The grill…oh lord. Why? And you can tell all she wants to do is get out of those shoes.

  • CB

This was Coco Rocha’s Met Ball dress. I generally expect more from Katy than a repeat look.

    • Lizzyisi

I liked the length on Rocha’s version much better. A slit that radical looks silly with a knee-length (or shorter) skirt. Seriously, just go pantsless if you don’t want skirt past your knees and you want a slit that exposes the entire width of your thigh.

  • Jessica Freeman

At what point did she stop and put the grill in? Ugh. No to all of the above.

    • sagecreek

No kidding…was it tucked inside her bra or something?

    • KELLEYKAT

LOL! I was wondering the same thing! She must have grill handlers! That’s a profession to make a mother proud!

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

If I’ve read the conspiracy website correctly, her Theme is right on to further feed the Illuminati mind controlled puppet, blah, blah, blah business. Both the print and the butterflies are a big thing with that set.

    • Tess Danesi

What the hell? This is news to me. Weird news.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Oh, to call it news is a stretch. It’s pure conspiracy theory and opinions of a select population. I like knowing how other folks think and what they see in this circus that is the entertainment industry.

        • Tess Danesi

From the really hyper-quick search I did it appears celebrities are sacrificing loved ones for their success. If the rest of us didn’t face tragedies with alarming regularity, all loss and no gain, I could maybe buy this. But it is interesting to see how some people have to associate fame with the supernatural. Now, if I can apply this theory selectively, I would say the Kardashian clan must have somehow be in with the Illuminati because there is no other way I can explain their fame.

  • Kelley Hannafin

Between the dress and the grill she’s taking the “Roar” thing a little too literally.

    • KC

I totally agree. Have you listened to the song? Its catchy but the lyrics are soooo literal and she uses so many cliches. I dunno…not very creative in my opinion. And the minute I saw this dress I was like “OH C’MON, YOU CAN DO BETTER” I’m also assuming the butterflies on her dress are referencing the “float like a butterfly” part of the song, I’m surprised she doesn’t have bees on there as well.

  • Tess Danesi

I liked the look better once I saw the bejeweled dragonflies, but I’m a sucker for dragonflies. I think they’d work much better on a less busy pattern, the leopard minimizes their impact. Then again, maybe that’s the idea, if the dress were a sold, she’d look like she’d been attacked by a swarm.

The grill, the shoes…so wrong. Her legs are lust-worthy.

  • anotherkate

I saw the grill and just thought, “Why are we doing this? Why, why, why are we doing this?”

  • DamH

I think she’s doing relatively well compared to the other songstress.

  • Deac82

She’s really going to work that “Roar” theme for all its worth, isn’t she?

  • Mary Featherstone

Her toes are really freaking me out!

  • coffeeandshoes

Those shoes must have been uncomfortably small, because not only is she falling out of them, but there also appears to be a blister situation. Band-aid on the right heel in the last picture! No judgment for the band-aid – we’ve all been there :)

    • Tess Danesi

Good eye! Or you have a much larger screen than I do :-)

    • Getoverit

I don’t think the shoes were too small, if you look in the pics theres at least a 1/2 inch between her heel and the back of them, her feet just slid forward…causing her toes to grip whatever they could to balance. That being said, I wouild rather see her manicured toes sliding out of her shoes than a pair of shoes with unpainted piggies.

And please can we just outlaw turtlenecks for women with no neck wrinkles?

  • Telperion

I keep expecting those moths to fly away any second, frightened by that grill above and the leopard below. Though the grill may have frightened them to death, so they’re staying put.

  • majorbedhead

I got nuthin’. I’m just going to sit over here and shake my head in disgust.

  • Garcia Loca

Real housewife, right down to French toes.

    • lobsterlen

I never understood french pedicure. You get a french manicure because it makes your nails look longer. Do women really want to have their toe nails look longer?

  • Sarah

For the love of all that is holy PUT YOUR INNER THIGH AWAY. The only person who needs to see that much of your inner thigh is the person who is banging you. If your skirt covers less than a bikini bottom, you need to ask yourself some hard questions.

    • VictoriaDiNardo

I saw a clip of her sticking out her leg and calling it “doing a Jolie”, so I just love it because now it’s a verb!

  • Danielle

    HAHAHAHA The toes.

  • ashtangajunkie

Those are not her shoes at all. This bores me, which is incredibly disappointing when we’re looking at Katy Perry. The grill “trend” (not sure if it counts as a trend yet if we’ve only seen it twice so far) is stupid.

  • kmk05

What kills it for me (apart from the grill WTF let us not talk about that) is the shoes and the length of the dress. If it were shorter, I think it would have balanced out the heaviness and fussiness up top. The shoes are just unflattering, making her feet look wide and making her look unbalanced.

  • Chipster

    Monkey toes!

  • GillianHolroyd

The back view is not flattering. It might have looked better with a low back.

    • embers618

And the pattern and shape are doing her no favors in the hip/bum department, which is sad because she has a nice body. This just makes her look a little dumpy.

  • jmorino08

She looked better on TV in this. Or maybe I was so distracted by the ridiculous ghetto/gay act she was working in her red carpet interview. “I’m working the Angelina Jolie here, mmmkayyy!”

I tire of you Katy Perry. Go away and come back when you’re not a caricature!

  • MaggieMae

    I am disappoint.

  • decormaven

Go up a half size on the shoes and don’t dress so literally. Jungle print dress and single entitled “Roar”? One dim lightbulb birthed this concept. Katy, you deserve better than this.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I was going to say “purrrr-fect” until she opened her mouth. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

A few days ago I asked the rhetorical question, “Who is Madonna’s peer group?” or “Whom does Madonna dress for?” This may be one answer, after all. Did Katy love Madonna’s grill?

I was impressed with Katy for two seconds for leaving her boobs unexposed. This dress is a bit too busy around the neck. Due to the high neckline, I don’t mind the high slit.

  • largishbearishAtlish

hate it. will spend the rest of the day trying to get the grill image out of my brain. Used to love her but this pushes it so over the line… pray the dragonflies sting her into a coma.

  • bellafigura1

I kept scrolling and hoping, hoping: Please don’t show the feet, please don’t show the feet. Eek.

  • MilaXX

dem toes! The struggle is real!

  • Judy_J

Her toes are hanging on for dear life because the shoes are too small! Next time have your stylist find a pair that fit.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

coco rocha wore this dress to the met gal, and she made it work with better accesorizing and styling.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

It bugs me the way that the slit makes the pattern curve to the side. I want that dark area of the leopard print to go straight down the middle. And, toes touching the floor??? Even if it is a red carpet, it’s still in Brooklyn.

  • bertkeeter

From 1 to 10..I’d have to give this look a ZERO!

  • Sonja Brisson

Sheena of the Jungle and toe claws. She messed up the theme with the grill. What up with the grill, girls?

  • VicksieDo

My big problem with this look is that the dress doesn’t fit, too tight around the hips. Otherwise, it’s fine and went with her “Roar” song, get it? :-/

    • GinaGeo

Exactly. This is the girl who wore a dress with Smurfette on it to the Smurf’s premiere. Of course she’s going to dress like a wild cat to the event where she will perform “Roar”. Subtle, she is not.

  • lobsterlen

My 10 month old puppy was in that very war with dragonflies yesterday. He spent a good 30 minutes trying to catch dragonflies. He did not have one successful capture. Actually the dragonflies seemed to be taunting him. We humans were entertained.

Dragonflies v Puppy in the Animal Kingdom Battle:
    Dragonflies 1 Puppy 0

Puppy still get points for being cute which Katy Perry’s dress is not.

Katy Perry Dragonfly Leopard dress is a clear loser in the Animal Kingdom Battle and all animal species should rise up and turn on that dress and destroy it along with her grill.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

    50 shades of fug (c)

  • marlie

Ladystars are clearly completely incapable of finding shoes that fit them. The dress is ugly, the grill is stupid, and I her hair is too severe.

  • lobsterlen

And one more thing … the close up of her face … her make-up is really aging. She is young woman and that makeup is adding years to her.

  • sewchick

The slit makes her butt look big. Or maybe like they had to slit the dress to get her butt in it? And the grill is just ugly. The shoes are the final insult to the whole mess.

  • guest2visits

Awful from toe to teeth. A tacky circus extra? Katy can wear some weird or unusual things but she usually never looks low budget in them. Maybe it’s just because it looks more like a costume than an expensive designer dress.

  • Zorkness

She needs to floss her teeth and get those yucky diamonds out.

  • formerlyAnon

I can’t figure out why I like the top of the dress with all the shiny, sparkly bugs all over it so much. I pretty much loathe the bottom of the dress, I hate animal print and this one is so literal and the print is the focal point of the dress from waist down.

The “kicky fun! grill” is not a thing. Don’t even TRY, mkay?

  • AnnPopovic

I just had a Scary Spice flashback.

  • unbornfawn

    She looks like a Kardasian.

  • Latin Buddy

Coco Rocha wore this to the MET Gala and looked incredible.

  • siriuslover

I don’t think the dress is that bad–it seems a Katy Perry thing. The grilles are beyond stupid. And I don’t get naked shoes on anyone.

  • ErmengardeGreen

She looks like she feels too old for this.

  • shelley514

Those shoes are a size or so too small! You know you wear a size 10 Katy, not an 8.

  • steeg of their own

I feel like if she’s gonna go crazy, she needs to go all out. I miss the days of the carousel dress or the ice cream cone get-up.

Plus, you never want to show up at a major event in a dress that Coco Rocha has already worn better at the Met Ball.

  • Michelle Wilson

    Team dragonfly!

  • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

    dem toes.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Just, really terribly horribly awful from head to toes. When you manage to tacky up the VMAs, you’ve utterly failed.

  • Fred Vaughn

The shoes wreck this in a BIG WAY.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I appreciate that she couldn’t hang onto the Cartoon Katy persona forever, but you can’t tell me this is the best she’s got.

  • Kassandra Silas

I totally agree about the shoes! Here’s your sign they might be a size too small…

That dress…. words cannot describe…. I think I’m having a stroke just looking at it.

  • Darren Nesbitt

Why must we recycle dresses from past Met Galas that super models wore?

  • Meredith

Mixing the yellow in the print and the yellow from the dragonflies is just not working IMO.

  • kimiakay

I don’t mind the recycling of the dresses, but the grills? I just can’t …. whoever in their right minds looked in a mirror and pronounced this good? Attractive? I realize taste is individual but…

  • Call me Bee

Huh. I kinda like it. She looks pretty and put together–her legs look great!
Still hate her, though, with a white-hot hate I cannot explain.

  • macwell

    ROAR!…? More like – meow…:(

  • laura magner

    Platypus feet…

  • CommentsByKatie

I completely hate all of this. I want the old Katy Perry back. I’m probably biased because I was a huge Katy fangirl, but I hated Roar, I hate that she doesn’t wear fun costumes anymore, and I definitely hate the way she looks in these pictures. Sad.

  • Alloy Jane

She bores me, utterly. I am a fan of her hair though, it is very nice. But she’s trying just as hard as Miley to be, I dunno, relevant? The dress doesn’t exactly bother me but it doesn’t work on her. E! has the pic of Coco Rocha wearing the long version and darned if it doesn’t look a billion times better on her. But she’s a model so, she knows how to wear these things. I’d actually really love to see Iman in the long version.

Oh, and South Park could base an entire episode on the conflict between Katy Perry’s toes and those heels. Vive la résistance!

  • superemang

what? she borrows clothes from the Kardashians now?

  • Erica_Vuitton

So she wore the same dress as Coco, ripped off Sara B for the beat to her new single, and stole the concept for her single look/video/performance from the movie Rocky. And jumping on the grill trend too apparently. SMH… she used to be so much more original than this.

  • valerie saenz

I think I’ll put the 1932 Tarzan The Ape Man on my Netflix queue. Maureen O’Sullivan would look totally awesome in this dress.

  • Lilyana_F

Meh… terrible fit on the shoes.

  • kathrineb

Yuck. Shoulder pads seem to be this years fishtail :(.

  • Kikishua
