Kate Hudson in Balmain at the “Clear History” LA Premiere

Posted on August 01, 2013

We had a whole set of Kate-Hudson-in-a-white-dress pictures from some talk show appearance ready to go, but we just weren’t feeling the idea of writing yet another “Kate Hudson really needs to stop dressing in boring white all the time” post. Then this crossed our desks:

Kate Hudson attends the premiere of “Clear History” in Los Angeles in a Balmain mini dress paired with Dana Rebecca Designs jewelry and Casadei pumps.

Balmain Resort 2014 Collection

Okay, new rule time: Kate Hudson needs to wear Balmain all the time. We’re serious here. We get that the skirt is way too tough for a mere mortal to pull off, but the top half of this does great things for her. Kate’s a little, shall we say, on the bland side with her looks and coloring. She’s a gal who desperately needs clothes with some real personality to them; otherwise she just looks generic. We get that a lot of kittens are probably not going to stand with us on this one but we really think this looks great on her. From the waist up, at least. Balmain puts out some fairly declarative, attention-seeking pieces. She should really consider pawing her way through their racks more often.

The shape is fine… it’s the “Christmas tree skirt that got left in the attic too long” fabric that bothers me.

  • buttercup

She looks like a kitchen backsplash.

  • Trisha26

The top gives her no shape at all, the skirt’s too short, and the entire thing is too “crafty.” Apparently I’m not with you.

    • AmeliaEve

I will be looking for this to show up on the next craft class calendar from Michael’s.

Recycle your old jeans into a stunning designer creation! Saturday, 10:00 – 2:30. Bring at least two pairs of jeans and any accessories you wish to incorporate. $45 + $30 materials fee.

      • RebeccaKW

You can probably find 15 tutorials on Pinterest right now.

(I’m a Pinterest follower, but there is some wack-a-doo shit on there.)

        • decormaven

Ha ha! All she needs is a funky braid, and a mason jar candle holder as an accessory. Butterfly tat, and it would be the Pinterest trifecta.

          • RebeccaKW

Wait, you have to have something made from toilet paper tubes.

          • decormaven

Or pallets! Maybe a pallet purse.

  • Sarah

    Denim potholders.

  • flamingoNW

I like it all. Interesting, looks great on her

  • Sonja Brisson

Protective potholders! Too pastel-y. Messy hair and messy material. Too short and silly putty, silly shoes.

    TLo, what are you thinking?

  • kimmeister

    It looks very heavy.

    • Kikishua

And rather uncomfortable to sit down in (unless the back is “we didn’t get round to decorating it”)

  • Lilak

Mutton (well, not quite) dressed as Fanning.

  • Sarah Caponigro

I thought that everyone had their all denim bad outfit experience in their teens early twenties in hollywood.

  • neonseattle

at first glance, i hated this but it’s a pretty cool dress even though it looks like she’s sweating in it. the makeup and hair is pretty, too. she also looks a lot like diane kruger here.

  • hughman

It’s great if you’re a stripper who wears a toaster cover while doling out chicken feed from your pockets.

What I mean is it’s a lot of look.

    • chowwander

Pinterest DIY: Turn your old denim into a tea cozy!

    • So my immediate thought to this (your comment) was “Gonzo porn.” But I was thinking Gonzo the chicken loving Muppet. Some things really have two drastically different meanings!!!

  • Ekw

    Craft project. Ugh.

  • Wendy Hester

She’s wearing a bedazzled denim quilt that makes her look top heavy, how is that a good thing?

  • This looks like something you could purchase at a flea market.

  • Louise Bryan

I really like this, quilting and all. Okay, maybe not so much the hip scarves skirt, but from the waist up, definite thumbs up.

  • roche

Yeah, she looks great but the dress is an 80s oven mitt.

  • Adrianna Grężak

    LOVE Balmain.

  • IamNOToneofyourFANS

It does look good on her, but, oh the denim. As Tim Gunn once said over someone’s failing attempt at a denim dress on an old PR episode, this outfit is looking very “happy hands at home craft circle”. It looks like the end result of everyone in the craft circle being given a bedazzler, a bag of old blue jeans, and a shot of amphetamines.

    • As Mommie Dearest is one of my all time favorite movies, may I genuflect at your name and avatar? Well played, so very well played.

      • IamNOToneofyourFANS

Thanks! The sublimely absurd climax of a film chock full of the highest degree of camp. Poor Tina. Poor end table and lamp.

  • alyce1213

    Fancy oven mitt.

    • 1964edithgrove

didn’t see your post before I said my piece…

  • filmcricket

I’m having this incredible urge to re-watch Deadwood suddenly. The wicker basket top combined with the six-shooter holsters on her hips perhaps?

I could actually get behind this if it weren’t for the hair & the shoes. It looks like the dress is wearing her, because there’s no styling at all.

    • frumpybiscuits

      First, yes! watch Deadwood again.
Second I love her hair and make up here – think it’s fresh and doesn’t compete with the outfit.
The shoes I *hate*. Everyone needs to stop with the platforms. The moment is Over. And flesh colored platforms are the worst. Weird cloven hoof looking things. Gaaaaah. (This is obviously a huge pet peeve of mine)

  • Susan Bigler

I don’t really think that dress flatters her. She looks lumpy through the middle and the skirt is just odd. The proportions are off. No.

  • MilaXX

Lose the platform pumps and give her a pair of skinny jeans and this works. Sorry that’s a shirt.

  • Glam Dixie

The white band around her middle hits at a rather awkward and unflattering spot.

  • clatie

Are you kidding me with this? This is HIDEOUS. It should be burned and the ashes scattered thousands of miles apart. This is COMICALLY TERRIBLE.

    • quiltwombat

      My sentiments precisely!

  • another_laura

From further out, I really like this on her. In closeup the fabric is not pleasing me.

But really, in truth, I wish she would just go away.

  • leahpapa

Add a few stenciled geese, and that’s what my mom’s kitchen looked like in 1987. However, as much as I want to hate this – and, in many way, really do – it’s a more becoming look that most of what I see her in.

  • d4divine

The top looks better on th model. The fit around Kate’s waist seems a little loose…not that it should be skin tight. It’s just that the fabric looks so thick that the extra bulk makes her look a bit boxy. IMO

  • Imasewsure

Make it two inches longer and get rid of those pumps and then I would love it too

  • JuliaInBlack

I’m with you, Daddies. I like it on her although I would love it to death in a different fabric.

  • CommentsByKatie

Love. This. SO MUCH. This might be my favorite non-gown T-Lo look ever.

  • MemHey

Love Balmain. Honestly. I think she looks really fresh, sweet, and lovely while still maintaining a sense of starriness.

  • guest2visits

I like this on her very much – but it’s almost a bit too short; wants to look like dress/wants to look like a romper.
For a dress so short, I would’ve thought strappier heels would have worked better.

  • Perigee

    K. Hud is fine in this, but just imagine how K. Stew would rock both the top and skirt. Plus she wouldn’t wear it with white suede platform pumps.

  • I love Balmain. I also like the fabrics of this piece, because Balmain can feel heavy and the chambray/white makes it so fresh.

  • Anniebet

First thought… that’s waay too short – why’d she have it shortened that much. Then I saw the model’s pic. So, Balmain peeps… Sam, you made the skirt too short! No matter though, she looks fantastic in this. I don’t even mind the bandoliers, but I do resent those shoes.

  • Natty Soltesz

One of the great things about this site is the tension that comes from reading TLo’s opening passage then waiting for the final judgement to come as you scroll through the pics. I love you guys, thanks for writing!

  • macwell

I love it on her and I love her make up. She looks great Channeling Mama Goldie a little even. 😉

  • elzatelzabelz

No. Just No. See also: weird ribbon side thing on her bum, and stupid flowers. And, no.

    • 1964edithgrove

      Oven mitts…

  • Nellie Wilson

Actually, I totally agree with you.

  • Aaminah Khan

I really like it, even the skirt (which is making her hips look tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny)! And that baby blue is great on her.

  • Glenn Johnson

Actually I like the skirt. She is one of the few women tiny enough to wear extra bandoliers around her hips. The top is denim jubilee jumbles crossed with Chain Maille.

  • This dress is unique; that’s for sure. I’d like to see maybe three or four inches added to the hem. Maybe a “hairdo,” instead of hair just hanging.

  • MannahattaMamma

yes! protective potholders, exactly! potholders holding in her…well, her stuff. Barely holding it in. And those shoes? She looks like a badly wrapped package.

  • MzzPants

I think it suits her. Thank God it’s not a talk show appearance.

  • ankali

I actually really like this on the model, but not on Kate. The top half looks so bulky.

  • Targettaste

Hey! Which Project Runway designer stole my 60s maxi dress and tried to update it? Fail.

  • j_anson

Huh, I thought opinion would be more divided. I actually like this a fair amount. It’s not perfect, but it’s interesting. Although I do think it’s one of those things that looks better from a distance than up close.

  • MiriamMc75

I agree and THEN some! She looks great full stop – I even think she’s pulling off the skirt. Bravo! Fabulous look for her.

    • carolynmo

      I agree. It is fabulous.

  • IngerMereteH

I look at this and all I see is upholstery.

  • KikiAvocado

looks arts and craftsy- like a bad craft show booth of “custom denim outfits”

  • Jessica Freeman

I can sign off on the top, but the skirt is too much. Hate the shoes.

  • MartyBellerMask

That dress is way, way ugly. But I can’t argue that she looks good in it. Go figure.

  • Tatiana Luján

The skirt part needs more inches to be in the right proportion with the top.

  • Diego!

I agree with the top… the skirt is way too short, but she has amazing legs too! I HATE the shoes! But overall this is a great choice!

  • Katie Wolf

Super surprised by all the negative comments! She looks great and its both visually and conceptually interesting.

  • Sorena

solid anxious interval: 1998 shopping mall attire

  • marlie

Huh. I understand what TLo are saying, but the dress is rather ugly.

  • julnyes

She is on my ICHL, but this look is interesting which is a huge step forward for her since she normally bores me to tears.

  • RuthGo

I think I would like this better on her if it was a print instead of three dimensional working on fabric. It’s just too stiff on her and it feels likes it out of her wheelhouse.

  • EEKstl

This totally works but that skirt is just too short. It’s throwing off the balance.

  • RebeccaKW

I like it. The side view on the top is kind of bulky, but from the front, it’s great. That’s a great shade of blue.

  • Tracy_Flick

I don’t hate it. It’s sort of stiff and upholstered, but I suppose that’s better than skin-tight and transparent. She looks pretty. Good enough.

  • Belvane

Wow, really disagree with this one. There have been a lot of contenders for this title, but that may indeed be the ugliest dress I’ve ever seen. It makes this willowy woman look bunched-up and stocky. And her hair is sad.

  • amber.

Send this to Kristen Stewart and maybe try again.

  • Getoverit

Would love it more in a non 3D version.

  • librarygrrl64

Wow, I had a visceral reaction to that dress. A bad visceral reaction.

  • lynnlee

That dress is so awful! I looks like some corny countrified toddler outfit from a discount store. The sort of thing my mom got a great deal on when my daughter was born that came with matching bloomers and one of those dorky elastic hair bows and I had to put on my child at least once to send grandma a picture. Kate Hudson must have a really mean stylist.

  • lesmaha

I hate it when we disagree…but I just can’t with this dress.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    No. Just no.
