Julie Bowen at the “Planes” Premiere

Posted on August 07, 2013

We’re of many minds on this look, which strikes us a little absurd, since it really doesn’t warrant so much thought.

Julie Bowen attends the premiere of “Planes” in Hollywood, California.

But here it is: We think this is a really snappy daytime outfit and she looks pretty great in it. But then we remember she’s on a movie premiere red carpet. But then we remember it’s a Disney cartoon and she’s probably contractually obligated to make a certain number of appearances at Disney/ABC events and this isn’t really her night. And then we also remember that so many of her red carpet outfits lack personality, which this one does not.

It comes down to this: fantastic for a luncheon or a maybe even a photocall, but this is a bit on the cazh side, even for a contractually obligated Disney cartoon premiere. But she looks fun. We want to have drinks with her and bitch about Disney cartoon premieres.

  • She looks like a well turned out young mom, on her way to do errands before picking the kids up.

    • DTLAFamilies

Not in those shoes, unless she has sneakers tucked in that bag.

      • Emily Giovanni

That is definitely a room-for-sneakers bag. She just made this appearance between errands.

      • gloriana232

Ah, reminds me of those Italian moms we ran across in Venice … all impeccably coiffed, made-up, designer-shoed, and chain-smoking like crazy while their kids ran around them.

        • Heather

      • unbornfawn

I’ve seen a lot of Mom’s pick up their kids from school in shoes like those.

        • Getoverit

Lucky you. In our part of the country you get to see moms with a messy bun, sweat pants and house slippers picking their kids up.

          • majorbedhead

Here, too. I always think “Man, at least I don’t look like them” when I’m picking up my kids, and I’m hardly what you’d call a snappy dresser.

          • drdarke

You need to move, @majorbedhead:disqus .

Come – join The Civilized World! You’ll like it here….

          • Emily

Ew. I’m so sorry you have to see that.

          • marlie

A couple of years ago, I realized that I can pull on a pair of jeans or khakis just as easily as a pair of sweats; and slip into some ballet flats just as easily as house slippers. I also got rid of the ratty t-shirts and got some really cheap ones in bright colors or with a graphic print from places like Target and Old Navy.

That makes such a HUGE difference regarding “errand” or “bumming around” outfits. After I did that, I wasn’t embarrassed to run into someone I knew while at the grocery store, gas station, or pharmacy.

          • FrigidDiva

Unfortunately I live in a similar part of the world except those same women come into the office looking like that. I have an eight week old infant and manage to put together some relatively cute skirts and tops, you’d think they could leave the yoga pants at home and NOT wear them to work. UGH.

    • Rand Ortega

Executive Producer/Studio Executive’s wife uniform. Except the bag would be Hermes.

    • MilaXX

I think that’s the point and I like it for exactly that reason.

    • drdarke

      Exactly, @kiltdntiltd:disqus !

      • Heather

She’s trying to seduce the cute soccer coach maybe?

    • Emily

PRECISELY. And in SF, the moms DO wear shoes like that while running errands.

      • marlie

        And on the Main Line.

    • Brian G. Cox

I was basically thinking she’d gotten a call to drop by on her way home from Target, and then I saw their logo on the backdrop.

    • Kate

At least she is catering to her current “MOOOMMMM! IWANNAGOSEETHISMOVIEPLEASEMOMPLEASE?” crowd.

  • Diego!

If that “grey” carpet is in Disney, then she is rocking it! I love this outfit and those shoes! She looks great! It’s daytime so I have no complaints.

    • buttercup

Yeah, they made the “red carpet” look like an airport runway to go with the theme of the movie. If I showed up looking all fancy and stuff, and I saw that carpet? I’d be a little pissed.

      I love the sweater.

      • Diego!

      • Shannon Beamer

I love that sweater as well. Wonder how many organs I have to sell to afford it?

        • Little_Olive

Don’t worry, there should be a knockoff at Zara in no time (if not already).

          • marlie

Learn to knit. That would be hella easy to make – if pesky things like work and school didn’t get in the way.

  • Love it. Those shoes should bug me, but I really like them and what she’s got going on here. I think the fact this is a daytime, kids movie premiere makes it all okay.

    • SugarSnap108

They’re exactly the kind of shoes that usually make me angry (I’m emotional about footwear). But I love them here.

    • Little_Olive

Ah yes, sock-sandals make me angry too. Don’t even talk to me about the ones that are flip-flops on the toe part.
But here they seem o have stopped at a decent length of the ankle wrap and they seem to be made of nice leather instead of stretch fabric, so I’m not as offended.

  • Joanne Abrams

    Love the shoes

  • Karen Belgrad

My guess: the bag contains Red Vines, Snowcaps, M&M’s, and a Diet Raspberry Tea Snapple.

  • Imasewsure

Gotta put more in to it even for a casual premiere… this is cute (give it to me for work or weekends please) but it’s way too casual and that bag looks stupid… and the shoes seem to be the wrong color…

  • snarkykitten

She looks like she’s about to board a plane.

    • largishbearishAtlish

well in THAT definition this works…but its just so…mom on errands (but again, maybe that is the point? I like what T’lo said- wouldn’t you love to see some scotch in here and *really* hear what she thinks of this nonsense? Wonder if she snorts when she laughs? 🙂

  • JasmineAM

    Those shoes are super fugly.

  • alyce1213

She looks great, but I think this is her Reese Witherspoon parking lot moment.

  • In_Stitches

Her face looks fantastic; I’ve never seen her looks so beautiful. The hair really doesn’t flatter her though. She needs to either pull it all back or figure out some form of a side part. The look is great. I don’t even find it egregiously dressed down. It’s a daytime premiere for a kids’ movie she isn’t in. What else is she supposed to wear?

  • SugarSnap108

Kind of casual for a movie premiere, but I think this is the best I’ve ever seen her look. Adorbs.

  • hughman

Well this certainly makes me want to go out and buy a bottle of “Charlie”.

  • decormaven

I like the pop of color in the bag against the neutral tones of the outfit, but those open toe shoes call for polish on the toes. The intricacy of the footwear would be more balanced, I say.

  • NoveltyRocker

Her expression does sorta look like she thought she could wander on past and they goaded her into standing for photos.

  • Chuck Barthelme

I wish it was a cool button-up shirt or something with a collar. Would have been a bit more casual chic I think. But she does look great in that.

  • MilaXX

I like it. I think she’s bringing the mommy factor to the event, even if it is the Hollywood version of mommy with the heels and bag. I think I saw on another site she brought her boys so it fits.

  • I can’t help but feel that the shoes, bag and jewelry and belong to a much better outfit.

  • kim bunchalastnames

yeah, i’m not liking those shoes with that pant length. everything else is great for grocery shopping, though.

  • formerlyAnon

No. Too many colors – brown, blue, white, grey – with too little to tie them together for a red carpet. The cuff is good, though. If the shoes completed the outfit, rather than just looking cute on her feet, or if the tank top looked less like underwear (or the sweater was heavier and there were no visible straps/tank top layer) or the purse was not blue but completed a “multiple neutrals expensive casual wear” color scheme – any of those would make it o.k.

  • Poeta Paz

I Like it but I don’t think the shoes match. Brown with grey?

  • Tamara Hogan

I want those shoes in black. BAD.

  • Miss wks

    Flashdance circa 1983…what a feeling!

    • Shawn EH

      But with an expensive sweater!

  • stellamaris73

Minus the empty-looking blue bag, which ruins the whole neutral palette, that is a smart errand-running / lunch with girlfriends outfit. Complete with yoga-hair and minimalist makeup.

Not complaining (except about the bag), but is it a premiere outfit? Nah.

  • Candigirl1968

This is what happens when you get invited by your best friend who just broke up with her boyfriend an hour ago and ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT go to the premiere by herself because all of his friends are there, and your excuse “I just had brunch with my sister and am not dressed for the red carpet dammit!” simply will not do.

  • JauntyJohn

fun and fresh she looks super-dooper pretty.
red carpet for a cartoon gives a lot of leeway, imho.

    Especially this cartoon.

  • MartyBellerMask

Like she picked up a tabloid, pointed to Reese Witherspoon and said, “I’m going to be her today.”

  • bertkeeter

She’s stopping off at Gelson’s after the RC to pick up some groceries?

  • Trisha26

Looks like she just came from the gym & grabbed a pair of shoes from Payless on the way. Seriously, a pair of silver sandals & it’s a WERQ.

  • Erin Hines

Those Shoes! I am a sea of WANT!

  • jmorino08

I want that outfit. PM me for my address, Julie!

  • To be fair, somewhere on the premises John Lassiter may be wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

  • HobbitGirl

Other than the shoes, she looks like she just left the gym. Not okay for a red carpet.

  • Spicytomato1

She looks so pretty and fresh faced and I love the whole ensemble. I’d like to see what others were wearing before I deem it too casual…because she just looks so good! Only quibble is her toenails could use a little grooming and color. It would have been cute if maybe she’d coordinated her toes with the bag to pull the colors together more.

  • Louise Bryan

She looks all ready to board, with her fashionable carry-on and comfortable but classy outfit.

  • marlie

Really, really cute outfit, but she looks like she’s just out taking her kids to the movies.

  • neonseattle

super casual and very “mom”. but she looks fresh and comfortable.

  • SewingSiren

What in the hell is she hauling around in that suitcase?
