Julia Louis-Dreyfus at the “Planes” Premiere

Posted on August 07, 2013

We don’t love this – and it’s rare for us to say that about a Miss Julia ensemble. We get that it’s a Disney cartoon premiere and maybe glitz and sexytimes were off the red carpet menu, but that’s no need to rush into Pilgrim-hood, dear.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus attends the “Planes” World Premiere held at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California.

It’s just kind of stiff and matronly-looking to us. No real style or ooomph to it. Nothing wrong with being covered up or in a prim kind of mood, but this is borderline nun. If nuns wore platform pumps, of course.

Her hair’s disappointing too. That’s another thing she almost never gets wrong. It’s fine and all, but it’s not a hairstyle that really sets her off.

Honestly, the whole look makes her look like an ultra-conservative politician’s wife. That’s, y’know, not a compliment.

The shoes make me truly sad.

    • AC Simons

I am so sick of hoof shoes! They look like crap on everyone.

      • HVM

        This.

      • alyce1213

These aren’t the worst offenders we’ve seen, but I hate hoof shoes with a passion. And these appear to be satin. Oy.

      • mlle

I want to draw a hoof shoe flowchart based on the question “Are you a cartoon mouse?”

      • e jerry powell

        Even-toed or odd-toed ungulate?

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Oh Julia! We still love you unreasoningly, but do try harder next time, m’kay?

    • drdarke

Maybe she came straight from shooting an episode of VEEP…?

      • Kikishua

Her VEEP hair is better, though. Actually, so are her VEEP outfits.

  • Emily Giovanni

I would love it if it was a color. Pretty much any color.

    • mlle

It would look like an adorable mid-60s office outfit in a colour.

  • alyce1213

Aww. Not her best look. The shoes are worse than the dress — are they satin?

    • drdarke

OMFG – Cloven Hoof Feet, @alyce1213!

    • Cz

Minnie Mouse shoes at a Disney movie seems hilariously appropriate, but not fashionably so.

  • MoHub

On the plus side, she seems to be wearing her age naturally. Except for the hair.

    • MaryMitch

Yes, I like her hair in Veep a lot better. Looks like a little grey’s creeping in too – not that there’s anything wrong with that.

      • zenobar

I see what you did there! :)

  • newleaf1

I rather like it. I’m guessing it looks better in person. But then again, I’m a little conservative. But I never liked hoof shoes and wish they would go away.

  • filmcricket

I actually think the dress is really cute, although the idea of wearing it in summer is making me sweat. Honestly, it doesn’t feel matronly to me – I think it’s too young for her. Zooey Deschanel is furious she didn’t get to it first.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Hate the way she looks here, but I can’t help thinking that she could have saved it with better styling. As it is, she looks frumpy.

  • Sobaika

I think the look is fine for a kid’s movie premiere, the hair and makeup aren’t my favorites.

  • Poeta Paz

I don’t think is that bad, maybe a belt would help, but is not a dress for this event.

  • SugarSnap108

I think the dress is OK, and venue-appropriate. She might have saved it with a strappy, sexy shoe and sleek hair. A dash of unexpectedly funky jewelry could help, too.

  • formerlyAnon

    Heart not in it?
There’s nothing terribly wrong with it . . . but this is the kind of thing one chooses when one chooses one’s own clothes – sometimes looking less than the best that one could look just to reflect a mood – or just to wear something different. And I assume she has people precisely to keep her out of the “o.k., I guess” zone.

  • Chipster

I actually like the dress. Different shoes and a clutch with some color would help. That hair……Eeesh!

  • mjude

the dress looks so heavy. not my fave look on her for sure.

  • ashtangajunkie

She always looks good and it’s not that she looks bad here, it’s just not the best look for her. And this is the first time I’ve ever thought that her hair looked less than spectacular.

  • gabbilevy

She should hire whoever costumes her for Veep … she always looks smokin’ on the show. And classy at the same time. Because she the Fucking Vice President of the United States.

  • AlisonS

If Putty ran for office, this is totally what Elaine would wear.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

This outfit makes me want to double up on my antidepressants.

    • decormaven

Or send an appropriate floral tribute.

  • jmorino08

It looks so heavy for summer! That’s definitely a winter funeral dress, if I ever saw one!

  • MilaXX

This would have been a great time to deploy a nice pair of pants.

  • marlie

Funereal dress, and practically no makeup means that she looks horribly dowdy and washed out.

    • Shawn EH

      But, mascara!

      • marlie

I said “practically no” makeup. All she’s wearing is mascara and a dash of liner. Which is fine for office drones like myself, but even I can take it up a notch for an “event.”

(P.S. I didn’t mean for that to come off snippy.)

        • Shawn EH

Me neither, I’m just trying to look on the bright side for Tovah Feldshuh, I mean Julia!

  • Shawn EH

It’s totally nana having the Boss to dinner … but I kinda like it. Maybe she’s going for a Mad Men kitsch vibe?

  • fringebenefit

I was going to disagree with your assessment, TLo, as being a tad too harsh until you said she looked like a conservative politician’s wife. Oh-oh, you’re right. Which immediately renders the ensemble OUT.

  • charlotte

Why is she wearing a Christmas dress in August…in California?

  • RuthGo

It looks very wintery and not very fun, which an outfit to a Disney/Pixar premiere should be. Loosen up!

  • Trisha26

Maybe she’s working her “Veep” character?

  • NoveltyRocker

I usually really love black and neutrals where others may crave color but with her hair looking so unintentionally unkempt and her makeup washing her out, I think color would have lifted this. Blush, lipstick, nails, colored jewelry or bag—something.

  • quiltrx

I think this could have been better with a more fun hairstyle and some bright shoes. The dress isn’t bad (it isn’t great either, I’ll admit) but the styling really drags her down.

    • Lori

I agree. If she really wanted to wear this dress I think it could have worked with different styling. And by different I mean nothing the same. Different shoes, purse, hair, make-up and jewelry.

  • Tatiana Luján

She looks matronly and childish at the same time.

  • Denise Alden

But that third photo is so “Elaine Benes Kennedy Junior,” isn’t it?

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I love that dress and would buy it for myself and happily wear it. However, I am not on a red carpet (Thank you, Universe) and I’m also a bit older than Julia. But I would look fab in that dress.

  • Getoverit

Awful outfit and shoes. She could use some color on her lips as well. A little red might have went a long way.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

    nice purse, sister peregrine.

  • kim bunchalastnames

can a thing be “too matronly” and too twee, simultaneously? oh, wait. those pictures just answered my question.

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

We just glimpsed into Zoey Deschanel’s dottage.

  • unbornfawn

    Dowdy comes to mind

  • lobsterlen

Anyone watching VEEP? I love it, very funny. Furthermore the clothes she wears on the show are great. Whoever is dressing her for the that should dress all political women.

  • mickiemonkey

Her body language says she is having Spanx problems.

  • Contralto

    Comfort Choir™ dress.

  • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

I’d say she went in-character as Selina Meyers, but her character dresses so much better than that.
