Jennifer Lawrence for Vogue Magazine

Posted on August 12, 2013

Wow. Miss Girl is just nailing it in this Vogue spread. Then again, it’s a Vogue spread. Once you put yourself in their not-so-loving hands, you’re likely to come out looking pretty fierce. Miss Jen likes to project a laid back, just-a-regular-girl vibe so the high-fashion requirements of her job didn’t come naturally to her when stardom came knocking, but she’s bounced back admirably and she’s really coming into her own on, well, owning it.

Jennifer Lawrence covers the September 2013 issue of Vogue Magazine  in a Calvin Klein dress photographed by Mario Testino.

On choosing to do the Hunger Games films: “When Winter’s Bone was getting nominated. I had only done indies, and suddenly I was introduced to this brand-new world where I didn’t feel like myself. I was in these weird gowns and listening to people talk about things I didn’t understand. And I remember reading that in the book and being like, Oh, my God, I know exactly what this feels like. I don’t know what it’s like to get ready for your death, but I do know what it’s like to be almost a puppet. And then when I was making the second film, I had become more acquainted with that world, and I think that’s something that Katniss experiences. She is different when she comes back. She does feel more comfortable in the Capitol; she understands the people more, and it’s not as eerie and scary and unfamiliar. She kind of knows how to work the system.”

On dealing with paparazzi: “If I were just your average 23-year-old girl and I called the police to say that there were strange men sleeping on my lawn and following me to Starbucks, they would leap into action. But because I am a famous person, well, sorry, ma’am, there’s nothing we can do. It makes no sense… I am just not OK with it. It’s as simple as that. I am just a normal girl and a human being, and I haven’t been in this long enough to feel like this is my new normal. I’m not going to find peace with it.”

On deciding to be an actress: “I know it sounds so stupid, but it was kind of like I finally found something people were telling me I was good at, which I had never heard, ever. And that was a big reason why my parents let me do this. One time, my mom was on the phone with my dad, saying, ‘We’re paying for therapy and all this medication, and we don’t need it when she’s here. She’s happy.’ ”

Is it really a Summer 2013 fashion spread if it doesn’t include the Gucci fish gown?

    • Karen Belgrad

Oh wait… I just realized this is the Fall Fashion issue. So sad that the summer of fish has come to an end :(

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I like to imagine them pulling it out and her cracking up, saying, “No. Not even on a dare. And I’ll do anything on a dare.”

  • berkeleygirl

How refreshing – I actually believe that she is not actively seeking stardom and not taking the glamour too seriously…

  • formerlyAnon

I like the Calvin Kein & the Rochas, though the Rochas is going to give mere mortals a lot of hip. I think it’s really meant to be photographed in riding side saddle on the grounds of some Brit’s estate.

    • gabbilevy

I love it with those boots. Gives it a little BAMF to its elegance.

      Also: PUPPIES!

      • formerlyAnon

Boots are almost always good. (And most of the exceptions are ankle boots.)

  • Sobaika

The doggies win this for me. I think Jennifer is a great actress, but she falls flat in photographs.

    • charlotte

I agree. I am also missing the Vogue glamour in these shots. The dog pic (in which she looks really cute though) could just as well be in Seventeen or something.

      • PeaceBang

That’s what I thought. Seventeen. Love her. The neckless pose is not working, though,

    • Sally Shield Mabadi

The gorgeous newfoundland! Although I love the picture of her in the Rochas too.

      • SRQkitten

A Newf and a Westie, two of my favorite breeds! Gotta love it! She seems to be making the transition to stardom with her sanity and perspective intact.

  • Little_Olive

Wow. Stunning cover. She has sort of an 80′s face, IMO, and the played perfectly to that with the hair and makeup.

  • carlaaxtman

Jennifer comes across as smart and articulate, as well as beautiful. And not jaded (yet). Also, the photography work in this spread is downright gorgeous.

  • amanda lynn

So happy to see fall fashion again. I know it comes every year, but it’s just so refreshing.

    • conniemd

Me too. Gorgeous fabrics in all three outfits. I want em all.

    • Nicholas

As a Scandinavian, so do I.

Summer collections might just as well be the Moon Base Alpha collection here.

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

Getting a Farrah Fawcett vibe with that cover shot.

  • SewingSiren

She looks fantastic in the Rochas, much better than the model.

  • Rand Ortega

Well, if I didn’t love her before (I did), I certainly do now. JLaw is the real deal, what the rest of the babystars try to be but aren’t genuine enough to pull it off. She wears couture effortlessly, makes them gorgeous &… wearable. Sorry. Gush over.

  • barbarienne

She is rocking the shit out of that Rochas. SPECTACULAR.

    • Clueless_Jock

Yes the Rochas looks amazing on her.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Love her in so many ways, for so many reasons.

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

wow that Rochas is stunning on her! Great shot :)

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the picture with the dogs.

  • MilaXX

That doggy picture is the smartest thing ever. It’s the perfect mix of fashion and her natural girl next door persona.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

    Love. Her.

  • PlethoraofBooks

I seriously love her! Her reaction to Jack Nicholson at the Oscars was the best!

  • prismamars

Wow- I think this may be the best she’s ever looked! I love her answers.

  • GorgeousThings

Luv. Huh. Who’s the stylist on this spread, do you know? It’s beautifully done.

  • RebeccaKW

I’m happy to see they didn’t do any (major) photoshopping to her face. I see freckles.

  • Diego!

I LOVE HUH!!! She is so down to Earth! And she is rocking the sh*t in this editorial! Go Jennifer! :D

  • Wendi126

Jennifer is that very rare being- a beautiful woman who women want to be friends with and men want to be with..(horrible grammar I know). And she’s talented and funny and very honest. She never sounds like she’s full of shit or full of herself. She’s never going to be mistaken for Gwyneth

    • Shawn EH

If only she can avoid helping us all cook, dress, eat and chat better!

    • Phoenix

“a beautiful woman who women want to be friends with and men want to be with.”

      J. Law is charming, but that ideal above is so yucky.

      • calimon

        *whom*

  • Candigirl1968

Can she find a way to translate this to red carpet looks? This is probably the best (or nearly the best) that I’ve seen her in quite a while.

  • Fordzo

Girl on fire? So original! How ever did they come up with that tag line?

  • Fordzo

I want that Rochas outfit (as Jennifer is wearing it), and then I want to wear it to Scotland and walk across some moors. With a big, dignified dog. And Colin Firth. Please.

    • insertcleverbit

Only if I can join you with Alan Rickman as we survey our landholdings…

      • Fordzo

OMG! I was going back and forth in my fantasy trying to decide if I wanted Colin or Alan by my side! At my house, we don’t call him Alan Rickman. We call him Sex on Legs. Ideally, I’d have Colin speaking with Alan’s voice.

        • insertcleverbit

Ooh a new fantasy to add to the list. I thought I was alone in my weird obsession of Alan Rickman, and also Bruce Willis – Die Hard is like porn for me. :)

          • formerlyAnon

The (1995) movie version of Sense & Sensibility completely fell apart for me when I realized that the casting required the assumption that anyone in their right mind would give Hugh Grant a second thought when Alan Rickman was available.

          • insertcleverbit

This. I have never found Hugh Grant remotely attractive. I mean what does he have to offer? His British accent is no where near as sexy as Alan’s. And he doesn’t have that dangerous sex appeal.

And Colonel Brandon immediately loved Marianne, where as Edward was all hemmin and hawin about honor. Pishaw.

That moment when Rickman says “To your sister I wish every imaginable happiness. As for Mr. Willoughby, may he endeavor to deserve her” – a real panty dropper.

      • formerlyAnon

Pardon me, but Alan and I have previous a commitment. On any day you might propose.

  • Jecca2244

I remember a few years ago (3 at the most) we were visiting my fiance’s grandparents in Palm Desert and they had the local magazine out on the table. Jennifer was on the cover as this girl to watch. Talk about sky rocketing.

  • Danielle

    I’VE GOT LADY WOOD.

  • The Versatile Chef

That tweed Rochas outfit with the circa 1948 Dior vibe? I FUCKING WANT THAT.

    • Fordzo

Me first! I have a date to wear it with Colin Firth.

He’s just not aware of it, yet.

  • unbornfawn

She’s really bringing it here. Love seeing the wools.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Good Lord! Can she rock that Rochas or what?? Stunning, and I love that they put her in classic silhouettes and fabrics. She does give off an ‘Earth Mother’ vibe that will just get stronger as she matures, and this is the right style trend for her, IMO.

  • kim bunchalastnames

i dread the inevitable backlash, because i love this girl. and she’s WEARING those clothes. plus: fall fashion = yay!

  • kimmeister

The hair strikes as very un-fierce and not fashion-y. More like what the next-door neighbor on an 80′s sitcom looks like.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She’s looking all Wuthering Heights in the Rochas. Fabulous.

  • snarkykitten

    DOGGIES!!

  • Cz

PUPPIES!!! And she does look beautiful in the cover. Like an old school beauty mag.

    • Fordzo

      puppies, Puppies, PUPPIES!!!!

  • BuffaloBarbara

Hmm. She’s managing “Girl next door who likes fashion a lot.” It’s a look. I like it. And that Rochas… I can’t wait until the cheaper knock-offs come out, because I’m buying the hell out of one.

  • HobbitGirl

Oh, the puppies. My heart, it melts.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    LUV. HUH.

  • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

    She’s making that Rochas sing

  • CommentsByKatie

Did she really compare Hollywood life to the Capitol? I knew I loved this girl.

  • H2olovngrl

    And…DOGGIES!

  • Anniebet

She’s the antidote to all the flimsy, silly, self absorbed young female celebs who bombard us with their attempts to be relevant on a daily basis. Bless her for being a beautiful, grounded person. And those pics are spectacular. Whoever thought a tree could be such a great accessory? And YES… DOGGIES!

  • kat89

Wow, the September Issue! Girl has hit the big time and looks fabulous!

  • ShaoLinKitten

Can’t wait to see her in Serena. It warms my heart to know that she is willing to play an absolute villainess this early in her career, when she could stick to playing romantic leads and heroines. Also very excited to see her in 1930s drag.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

wow, she is so open and honest about herself. i think i love her. and she looks fabulous. she’s gonna learn, though, that when you’re rich and famous you have to hire your own police to kick people off your lawn. or do it yourself! she sounds like she has the cajones to do it, too.

  • alyce1213

LOVE her. The Rochas is gorgeous.

  • Mike

She has such a round face…no interesting angles or anything that separates her from average girls in the mall. Plus, she comes across as very whiny in the interview.

  • Mike

Jennifer Lawrence’s persona ruins her for me. She comes across as vulgar and ignorant, having made homophobic and transphobic remarks under the guise of “keeping it real.”

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Well don’t just drop a bomb like that and run away. Tell us what she did. What homophobic and transphobic remarks did she make?

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Well that was a rabbit hole I wish I’d never stumbled into. And now I need to have a deep, humor filled, yet intellectual discussion with well rounded people about cultural appropriation.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I agree. I found that whole website rather challenging. Not sure if it was something with me, or something with its author. In any case, obviously cultural appropriation is a THING.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Right? A big, fat, panty twisting, THING.

        • ShaoLinKitten

I am afraid of kimonos now.

  • quiltrx

I want to be the lady who can and does wear the Rochas…it’s awesome.
Perhaps on a Midsomer Murders ep. But I’d like to live and not be the murderer, please.

  • kathrineb

    Adorable.

  • Fred Vaughn

    With this, in many ways.

  • amandafg

I… don’t know how to deal with this website. I mean, they have an ENTIRE section on Colbert (a lot of his quotes are actually jokes from his show, when he’s making fun of awful people by portraying them so I.. can’t) and Amy Poehler too. Because apparently Parks and Rec makes FUN of Donna? Who is competent at her job and has the most balanced social (and financial!) life, and has men fighting over her AND she is still nice to her co-workers? I mean… I really don’t think they’re making fun of her.

    • ShaoLinKitten

Hence annabelle archer and me wanting to have a conversation with someone who has a sense of humor. Do not even look at the Dita VonTeese one. It is so wack and nitpicky that I just couldn’t. It made me feel some kinda way.

      • amandafg

You gotta have some sort of standard when you do this kind of project, I think. Calling out Taylor Swift because she wore cornrows when she was a child? And JONH SLATERRY because of that blackface scene on Mad Men? That.was.the.whole.point. I just…. aaaaaargh why did you ever link us to it I cannot get out! *drown is craziness*
