Jennifer Hudson in Christian Dior at the 2013 MTV VMAs

Posted on August 26, 2013

We’re usually fairly critical of her style choices, but we’re feeling this one.

Jennifer Hudson attends the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in a Christian Dior top and skirt paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

We don’t know… it just sort of feels like she owns this look. Maybe there are too many bangles or maybe the half-bustier could provide a little more coverage or maybe we don’t much like that hem, but the overall look just … works. For us, anyway. You kittens are, as always, free to rip it to shreds.

But really: Attagirl, Jennifer.

I feel like that hip flounce works better in fabric than in leather. And the hem needs to come up. Otherwise, I dig it.

      • Sarah

I LOVE that skirt but agree that the flounce would be more flouncy in fabric…I actually prefer the whole skirt in fabric, a la the runway look. Overall though, this exemplifies what I really don’t like about J. Hud’s style: she looks just plain uncomfortable! In everything she wears…I know she wants to (justly) show off her svelte body, bit she never seems very effortless, does she? The fabric skirt instead of leather and losing the choker would go a long way toward making her look a little more hip and laidback.

        • ballerinawithagun

So agree with the two of you. I’m sure she went with leather for that rock vibe but she would have been stunning in the fabric skirt. She needs a V necklace instead of the choker to elongate her neck. But, she is so beautiful!

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Finding myself wishing she’d lost the choker, but otherwise, this is fantastic for her. She’s giving the models a run for the money.

      • Rand Ortega

        Agreed. More earring, less choker.

    • decormaven

I like this look for her. Maybe a bangle or two less, but the jewelry is a welcome touch. Good job!

    • Darren Nesbitt

That piece of hair in her bangs! Where was the handler? they should have ran their fingers through that at least once!

    • Loola234

She looks good. She does have a bit of the “no-neck” thing going on with that choker…and is there something weird with the bangs??
Her legs look really long here.

    • PastryGoddess

This is the most proportionate she’s looked in a while. Her usual look is a bit bobblehead-esque

      • TropiCarla

Yes, but I cannot sign off on that hair. ugh

    • bxbourgie

It wasn’t cold enough in Brooklyn last night for leather. I was two boroughs away. No. Not leather weather. Also, too much going on around the midsection, kind of makes her look thicker than she is.

    • crash1212

I agree with T & Lo. This does work for her for this event. Nicely done. Also, I would cut a bitch for the bracelet on her left wrist.

    • frannyprof

Not feeling it. Ill fitting, too much jewelry.

    • Qitkat

This is a LOOK! but she is owning it. The top is a little too snug, as it cuts into her back, but shimmery houndstooth is a cool concept. I’m so proud of her for keeping the weight off. It can’t be easy.

    • Jacquelyn

The top is killer. The hem on skirt is odd, but she’s making it work. Her hair is so good!

    • Rand Ortega

Gurl looks BOOMIN’! She has her little affectations w/ the same amount of bangles, the gewgaws & the stick straight hair. But she looks stinkin’ hot, chic & ready for action. I say IN.

    • Introspective

she looks good here. nothing amazing but yes indeed, it works. which is more than i can say for 3/4ths of the RC looks last nite.

    • DuBey2

Love it on her. Maybe she’ll eventually use a little less jewelry (especially chokers) but I also understand her wanting to bling it up for this event.

    • hughman

Well well well, looky here… an adult.

      • MilaXX

and despite what Miley thinks, one of the few POC to perform last night.

        • Rand Ortega

& performing w/ a real artist who obviously knows what an homage to African American musical heritage is rather than using base tropes for shock value. & the song was about love, fairness & marriage equality. Extra score! Macklemore is the real deal.

          • MilaXX

You know as much as I do. So far I like him too.

          • rajf

Seattle person here…he IS the real deal as far as we’re concerned (not that I speak for all Seattle-ites). Look around on line for the home videos and news reports about the video he shot here this summer around a favorite local drive-in…cute. Plus, I just love the local talent that he’s featured on the “Same Love” (Mary Lambert) and another song you may like “Can’t Hold Us” (Ray Dalton). Also, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert with Macklemore is on line and a great view.

Sorry…home town pride took over here.

        • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Her hair during the performance was KILLER. I wish she’d worn it like that on the red carpet.

      • Darren Nesbitt

        The wig/weave/whatever isn’t nice.

    • Jessica Freeman

Really wished there was not a leather dinner napkin on her side. Even though her top looks like Sally Hansen nail stickers, I kinda like it.

    • MissFern

      HATE that choker

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Y’all know how I love the houndstooth (Roll Tide) so I may be biased, but I think she looks terrific here. Sometimes leather looks so cheap in photos, but she looks lux and fabulous.

    • Monzerrat Ontiveros

when did she cut her hair???

    • kimmeister

The outfit looks good, I’m just not sold on the eye makeup.

    • MilaXX

I don’t like the choker, but I’m not a fan of chokers in general. Overall the look works for the VMA’s even with all the jewelry.

    • KikiAvocado

I am a sucker for a well used houndstooth. Love it!

    • Diego!

It the skirt would be two inches shorter, this would be a perfect WERQ, she does look STUNNING anyway! :D

    • Dan_In_NYC

I can sign off on the top, the bangles on her left hand and the top. The rest – not feeling it. I cannot in good conscious offer an attgirl to someone wearing a choker.

    • Imasewsure

Really don’t like it but it is better than usual for her

    • Tracy_Flick

Is it the photo angle, or is the bustier sitting a little askew? It’s bugging me so much that I can’t form an opinion on the rest.

    • mjude

i just dont care for this at all.

    • thecitysleeps

Hate the hair, and that skirt looks heavy and unflattering, and sweaty.

    • bassfemme

The lady looks fine. A nice visual sorbet to cleanse my Miley eyeballs.

    • steeg of their own

I like it. I wish the skirt hadn’t been in leather, though. The fabric from the runway is much more flattering to the top.

    • Katesymae

The mega-long tresses are ruining an otherwise beautiful neckline, IMHO. Otherwise, quite a nice look.

      • alyce1213

The wig should have stopped at shoulder length to show clavicles and shoulder fronts.

        • Katesymae

Yep. Also, it looks like a curtain. A boob curtain.

    • Jennelle

      Duct tape runway challenge…ugly!

    • A Shiny O’Connor

Sweet Mother of Divine Tilda, NO. This look gives me a series of sads. Nothing works, most of all the hair.

    • nannypoo

      She looks uncomfortable in it.

    • kimiakay

It’s not a bad look for her; I’m just tired of black, and black and white. And leather. But I guess for the VMAs leather is venue-appropriate. Her makeup is very good, and her hair, well, ’nuff said.

    • Laurie Landry

Is it made out of duct tape?

    • Shawn EH

She always looks great in black and white.

    • teensmom99

Once again, Barbie country. I think this looks like it needs a jacket and then the 1950s Barbie I got from my cousins as a hand-me-down could become Office-Lady Barbie.

    • E. D.

I don’t mind the ruffle, which is shocking. She looks good.

    • Mori Rene

her eye makeup is giving me strength.

    • Danielle

I would have liked to see the skirt in fabric, but it’s cute overall.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I thought this was one of the best looks of the night. She’s chic and fierce. I love it.

    • kat89

She looks extremely uncomfortable in that outfit. It’s painful to look at. Technically she looks fine but the more I look at it, the more painful it gets.

    • Lesley

she over accessorized but the dress itself i love

    • marlie

It seems like Jen here always has on one item too many. I seriously want to yank that choker off of her neck.

    • conniemd

Love the top. Would have preferred the skirt in fabric and wish it was a tad bit shorter, being a leather skirt. The length looks awkward with such heavy material.

    • Aidan B

Love the dress on her! I just wish she would cut off some of that hair. That length/color effect is doing nothing for her.

    • largishbearishAtlish

sorry, houndstooth = culinary. So I am thinking, ripped chef coat + the naugahyde off the booth seat. And a weave? wig? both? (hope that skirt is lined….so some major wet wipes in the ladies room)

    • amanda lynn

Her boobs don’t look gross. So… WIN.

    • Nice_Shirt

That bodice looks like the houndstooth-print Duck Tape my teen daughter has put on every damned thing in my house. They both have the same sheen, too. Ick.

    • CommentsByKatie

Love this from the ankle up, but the toe cleavage is ruining the whole look for me.

    • quiltrx

Love the top portion…and totally with the other BK’s who think the skirt works better in fabric.

    • Alloy Jane

The bangles, sure, but not the choker, especially with that hair. Agree with the preference for a fabric skirt but yeah, this is fine. I dig the makeup.

    • lilyvonschtupp

I hate to sound overly critical, but does she look like she’s packed on a little weight? WHICH IS FINE, because I thought she was turning into a lollipop head. Or maybe a baby possibly on the way?

No matter what, its a WERK moment, and I’d rebury my grandmother for that choker.

    • lilyvonschtupp

When are we gonna get something on Fantasia?

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Overall, she looks pretty, but more “slightly edgy lady who lunches” than VMAs.

      • BrooklynBomber

I’m with you; she looks pretty, but the outfit? “slightly edgy lady who lunches” says it perfectly.

    • Erica_Vuitton

Please don’t let chokers be back. I can’t take it.

      • Jaeda Laurez

for the love of all that is holy.

    • MarissaLG

I really don’t like the houndstooth, but I think she looks good otherwise.

    • elemspbee

No. This isn’t working. The mid-section trying to be interesting just looks a mess. Looks stiff.

    • Lilithcat

On balance, I like it. However, the skirt looks much better, and has a better drape, in fabric. It’s too stiff in leather.

    • tereliz

The choker is a bit much with such heavy hair, but overall, I love it. The hint of pink in the houndstooth is fab!

    • guest2visits

The skirt is very nice on her, but the boxy bustier and the heavy choker do not work at all.

    • Fred Vaughn

One less piece of bling, and this could be even better.
