Jane Fonda at “The Butler” New York Premiere

Posted on August 06, 2013

Question: Does Jane Fonda just get up some days and say, “Hmmmm. It’s about time someone proved the 70+ crowd can rock a skinny jean and the smokey eye. Time to get to WERQ?”

It’s quite possible.

Jane Fonda attends the premiere of “The Butler” in New York City.

Mama expects you to bow down.

It’s ridiculous how fabulous she looks. The thing about JF is that she’s always had an intense, striking look about her, even if her features have always been more or less all-American girl. She’s brought that intensity to her senior years without diminishing it a bit. There’s a lot to be said for that. The elderly are expected to recede and tone things down a bit, but it’s good to have people like Jane, willing to say “FUCK THAT” and give their best shot at aging loudly instead of gracefully.

Love the outfit! I just wish she’d go with sleeker hair, a la Helen Mirren. And maybe a slightly fresher shade of lipstick. Love the pants and boots combo though.

    • Tatiana Luján

Yes, that hair is not as modern as the outfit.

      • Monabel

        • DilettanteDeconstructed

Great. Now I can’t unsee the resemblance.

          • Tatiana Luján

            Me neither.

        • snarkmeister

I was thinking Dolly Parton hair, but I think you nailed it.

        • kim bunchalastnames

          or carol burnett?

      • Guest

        carol burnett?

  • marlie

The smoky eye is a little overly aggressive, but that’s really a minor quibble considering how awesome every single other component of this picture is. She’s amazing!

    • leilah

I’m thinking not so much “smoky eye” as “cosmetics eye-lift–evening-style” … and applaud her refusal to go for the scalpel (any further?) …

  • Glam Dixie

The necklace is a bit much but she looks pretty freaking fab here.

  • decormaven

I’m getting a Linda Evans vibe from the hair, but other than that, no major flaws. Still working it!

    • Valdri8

So agree with the LE hair; I was going to refer to it as MOB. If she had depoofed it just a bit; as it is now I give it a WERQ IN PROGRESS!

  • Isabel

Jeans are fine! She looks fab except for SJP eye makeup.

    • luciaphile

Her eyes are bigger and rounder than SJP’s so I think it sort of works.

  • teensmom99

Strangely hip and age appropriate at the same time. There’s something a little Beverly Hills matron about this and yet it’s fun. Okay, I always have been a fan . . .

  • Frank_821

she does look pretty great. I keep thinking about Jane in the early days of her career and she often played that sweet engenue types like in Any Wednesday. Then she became Barbarella

  • Respect. Mad, crazy, all the respects. But, my honest impression is something looks different from her more recent features here (probably only make up or wig related) and it is causing me to feel like this looks more like an impressive impersonator, than Jane herself.

    • formerlyAnon

I don’t follow her closely, but this is a more obvious wig than usual, IMO and it’s a different eye treatment than I remember.

Which is fine, she’s 75 or so, for goshsakes.

      • Cz

I look forward to wearing fabulous wigs when I am older.

        • formerlyAnon

I’m hoping I can afford fabulous wigs when I am older, and enough household help that I think they’re worth the effort. (She said, contemplating the ever-larger amount of time and effort it takes to maintain a gently declining go-out-in-public standard.)

          • Cz

            And a personal trainer.

  • Julie

I, too, aspire to age loudly.

  • susan6

The eye is a bit too smoky, but I’m loving the sequined jacket. It reminds me of a scene in a family guy episode…
Lois: “Who threw out my sequined top?”
    Stewie: “You’re 43! Accept it!!!”

    No way, Stewie. No way.

  • Diego!

I LUV HUH and this is a most definetely WERQ to me! You teach them how it is done Jane! 😀

  • hughman

I adore Jane Fonda. Love her, love everything about her, thinking about being her for Halloween.

That said, not loving the smoky eye here. It’s coming off a little too “Sunset Boulevard” for my taste. And not in the good “werqing the turban” kind of way either. More in the “Max is moving the body from the pool so I had to do my own makeup” kind of way.

    • GillianHolroyd

      I’m getting a Pat Buckley flashback myself…

    • MoHub

You nailed it! I couldn’t figure out why I found her look so creepy, but you’re right: It’s Norma Desmond desperation.

    • Darva Sutra

Bowing the f down and praying to goddess Jane that I look half this good at her age! She is 99% perfection with this look, I do agree that the smoky eye technique here is a bit amateur. A medium gray shadow is applied to the inside corners of her eyes – this is a “no” at almost any age. Should have been a light nude instead, and then properly blended into the smoke eyeshadow effect on the middle to outer corners.

  • SissyLou

Hmmmm, don’t mean to go against the grain here but I think she looks a little scary. Especially in the second picture. She can, however, sport a pair of skinny jeans.

    • majorbedhead

Yes, I agree. Her eyes are kind of freaking me out.

I think she looks great, but the hair is a bit too much.

    • sojourneryouth

I love her too (her autobiography is among my favorites, ever), but there is something strangely off about how she looks here–like she doesn’t quite look like herself. I don’t know what it is. I thought she might have visited the “dentist” recently, but she doesn’t seem pulled or tightened, just different. Chin implant, maybe? IDK.

    • MissMariRose

I’m with you. That makeup is giving her a case of the Crazy Eyes.

  • Jeanne leCube

She looks horrible. Why do we have to pretend that she looks great when she obviously looks like she’s trying way too hard? This outfit wouldn’t look good on anyone of any age. And that eye makeup looks hideous.

  • MilaXX

    BAM! Lady looks good.

    • MoHub

I refuse to say how good someone looks—especially in relation to her age—when she’s had a boatload of work done. We might all be able to rock our age if we could afford enough plastic surgery. Give me Queen Helen’s crow’s feet and laugh lines any day.

And just once, I’d like to see an older woman sporting her natural grey hair and owning it.

      • filmcricket

Define boatloads, though. I mean yes, she’s had some work done. But she doesn’t have scary MTM face. Or Loni Anderson face. Hell, Carol Burnett’s face is more unsettling.

I don’t like the eye make-up and the hair is disturbingly Barbara Mandrell (in fact the whole outfit is a bit aging country/rocker) but I’m seeing plenty of crow’s feet here.

      • Matthew Vella

Jesus judgement. There’s nothing wrong with getting a little work done, she looks great AND there is no way someone could look that good simply by having plastics surgery. Being incredibly healthy has as much of an influence on your looks.

  • lilyvonschtupp

I never get over how much she looks like Henry, even at this age.

    GO JANEY!!!!!!

    • alyce1213

I love the strong family resemblance, Peter too. What gorgeous faces.

  • alyce1213

    WERQ, that’s all.

  • mmebam

    Werq it out, ma’am!

  • Monica De Leon

    this bitch….<3 she looks amazing

  • YoungSally

Think the outfit is great — but she doesn’t need a different shade of eye color on each wrinkle….it’s too harsh….maybe that will be my makeup mantra at 70-something – put on all the eyeshadow you want – then take at least one color off. I agree that the hair is aging.

  • I’ll see that WERQ and add a DAMN. Way to raise the bar, Jane.

  • Lizzy

Love. Agree that the hair is a bit much and eye JUST alittle heavy, but I will let her have those just for the amazingingness that is the rest of the outfit and the fact that she doesn’t appear to be fighting the aging processes too much.

  • bertkeeter

Not loving the “Rona Barrett” hair n makeup styling! All young BK’s please google Rona Barrett for reference! Great bod at any age!

  • Dan_In_NYC

That’s some wiggy looking hair – would love to see something more modern. Otherwise, fab!

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

My opinion of Miss Fonda, not that I am worthy of having an opinion about Miss Fonda, is that forever she had this huge shadow cast over her by her family, her father, her name and heritage. There was always something about her that was trying for more. It improved her acting, giving it a hunger and rawness that most any other actress couldn’t do. But there was this impression, to me at least, that going on in the back of her head was always this idea that maybe she wasn’t good enough, maybe all this was because of her name and her dad, and that was what her inner ‘audience’ was — trying to measure up.

Now, she’s clearly beyond that. She knows she’s a legend and it would be beyond fake of her to not own it. There’s modesty and there’s fakery. She can own it while still being modest. Or she can own it and say, “well modesty, I’ve told everyone and everthing else that was hampering my life to go fuck off, so you can go fuck off too.” And since then, Miss Lady has been going out and getting it and owning it, because it truly is hers to own and nobody who values their own life would dare step to her.

Yes, she looks older — she looks like a lady in her 60s who has had FABULOUS and appropriate and inanely flattering work done, but she still looks like the most fabulous older lady in the world. With that said, no amount of surgery or ass kissing could ever produce the glow and the smile that she has here. She KNOWS. It doesn’t matter how she knows or even what she knows. SHE KNOWS. SHE IS. She has achieved god-tier levels of fabulous. To steal from the Velveteen Rabbit, once you are fabulous, you can’t be ugly, except to puny mortals who don’t understand.

    That is all.

    • demidaemon

  • Morales Mike

    75. She’s f-ing 75. That’s a goddess folks.

  • Joanne Abrams

Inspiration to us gals over 60.

  • Jeanne leCube

    Sorry I didn’t drink the Kool-Aid.

  • snarkykitten

    bowing down!

  • gubblebumm

aging loudly instead of gracefully will be on my tombstone

  • nannypoo

When you are wizened yet wonderful tons of makeup and hair are the only way to go. She looks great.

    • 1964edithgrove

On the other hand, too much foundation will always stick in your crow’s feet and be quite unattractive. Ask me how i know.

  • Terri Terri

The hair is giving me 1970s “Frost and Tip” TV commercial.

  • formerlyAnon

Go her. She’s mid-70s for goshsakes.

I’m more than 20 years younger and aside from still having enough of my own hair to style and 50-something skin, she’s got my best look beat all hollow for fabulous.

    • rajf

      ^^ you’n me both.

      • Constant Reader

        Me too!

  • ankali

How the HELL is she looking that amazing in those pants? All that aerobics in the 80s is paying off big time.

  • LaSylphide

Don’t much care for the eye makeup or the dated hair, but Jeez Louise, aside from those minor details, she look fabulous. Her plastic surgeon should be given a sainthood. And those LEGS!

  • CeeQ

Holy smokes she looks amazing! No duck lips. No weird ass clenching pose. Just ramrod straight posture & regal poise. Take notes young & not so young Hollywood! This is how it’s bloody well done!

  • boweryboy

    Hate the shoes. Lurve her!

  • e jerry powell

And understated just enough that we know it’s not her movie premiering, while still keeping it fabulous.

  • LauraAgain

    No no no no no.

One big no. Her plastic surgery is all over the place and the make-up is way too heavy handed. Also, some women just don’t know when to give up the idea that they’re not 35 any more. She has a nice figure, but to me she’s trying way too hard.

    • Agreed. that makeup is WAY too much and Grandma in leather pants is always terrifying. Sure, she’s in good shape. Better than I, god knows, but *I’M* too old for those pants at 46. And so was she.

      • Shawn EH

Ungrateful! Didn’t she teach us all how to work out before anyone else?

        • formerlyAnon

I had that video. Not the leg warmers though.

        • I’ve been ignoring those workout admonitions for a long time now.

          • Shawn EH

Well, look what happens when you don’t!

  • unbornfawn

    Bow down bitches.

  • PastryGoddess

From now on I will be calling her Jane-Fucking-Fonda. Or I can just call her Miss Miss Lady forever and ever amen

  • DeTrop

Close-ups are deadly. They do no one any favor. That said, she is in fabulous shape. If only I worked out along with her on all those exercise tapes instead of just watching them. Grrr.

  • Therese Bohn

    Rock On Jane!

  • Scott Cooper

Loudly? Yes. Gracefully? There’s more than a touch of cosmetic surgery there, not to mention a state of the art wig and foundation garments. And the eye make-up makes her eyes look too close together. But there is no denying the effect is startling, striking, and memorable.

    • AmeliaEve

There is definitely plastic surgery, but she has one of the finest face lifts I’ve seen in Hollywood. Unlike so many stars, she still looks very much like herself, not some wax doll effigy. It’s delicately done and shows her inherent beauty without reworking it from scratch.

  • carnush

Her figure is still out of this world. That sequin jacket is super fab.

  • I think she looks great here, but it seems off season.

  • Shawn EH

She is going to rock it as Nancy Reagan in The Butler.

  • NOLA_gal

If that lady hands out DNA infusions, I’m getting in line. Smokin’

  • TerryMH

Sorry to disagree. All I see is cliche: aging actress desperate to look young via filled lips, fake veneer teeth, banal 80’s hair and skin texture stripped of texture (minus the eyes) curtesy of Botox and peels. . . or maybe I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I just listened to her give a Ted Talk about aging awesomely, haha.

  • Joe Schmartin

I’mma disagree with TLo (and agree with Scott Cooper down there) on the eye makeup. It’s applied too heavily on the inner corners & lids and makes her eyes look bizarrely close together. And Judy Bernly wants her going-out wig back.

That body, that posture, and those amazing legs, on the other hand…WOW!!! Atta girl.

  • Danielle

Go ahead, girl. I ain’t mad atcha.

  • Sonja Brisson

She is a STAR and sui generis — can do no wrong!

  • Getoverit

Hanoi Jane looks awful in this outfit. Horrid.

  • Ann VerWiebe

Jane Fonda was really the first celebrity to aggressively push fitness as a lifestyle. I remember doing her workouts daily when I was in college. And, the proof is in the pudding – she’s still fabulous!

  • MissDelaware

I just caught her on Netflix in a terrific French movie called (en Anglais) “All Together” — it’s wonderful, and she does the whole thing IN FRENCH. If you’re a fan, well worth checking out.

  • She looks fabulous. She has great taste. Beautiful eyes, but too much makeup, IMHO.

  • Guest

she DOES look fabulous … but when did she start to resemble carol burnett?

    • Donna Tabor

Maybe when they both shared the same surgeon.

  • Terri Terri

Dye it white and she’d have Paula Deen hair, oh no!!

  • Clydette Wantland

She’s freaking rocking that!! Love it. Love her. Go Jane.

  • Tarquin

From the neck up, she looks like a cross between Naomi Watts’ Princess Diana and a Rupaul’s Drag Race version of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall…

  • vitaminC

Everything but that wig. Jane, baby, invest in some better hairpieces!

  • ailujailuj

she was outrageous in the Amanda de Cadenet interview. made me love her a little bit.
