Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Vanessa Hudgens in Temperley London

Posted on August 16, 2013

Well, it appears her recent foray into simple and chic was a short-lived experiment, kittens. Either she fired a stylist or she was briefly using someone else while she was in London because there’s no way anyone can veer so wildly from patchouli-scented hippie girl style to classic Euro chic style, to the following, all in the same summer.

Vanessa Hudgens attends the WWE and E! Entertainment’s “Superstars For Hope” event in Beverly Hills, California in a Temperley London dress paired with an Edie Parker clutch, Anita Ko and Coomi rings, H. Stern earrings, and Saint Laurent pumps.

We actually really like this dress. There’s just one problem. It’s Cate Blanchett’s dress. We picture her standing in a slip just behind the scrim, checking her watch and tapping her foot impatiently;  just waiting for Vanessa to be finished with it so she can get on with wearing it like she was supposed to. At the very least, it belongs on a much taller woman. One of Vanessa’s most consistent style mistakes is that she doesn’t take into account what does and doesn’t look good on her because of her small size. She tends to wear big and grandiose garments when she gets dressed up. She gets swallowed up in them.

And save that Pinterest hair shit for your peasant blouses and cutoffs, honey. This was not the dress for it.

Oh the hair. How many blonde extensions had to die for that awful up-do.

    • kimmeister

I think I just got eye cancer just for looking at it. To clarify, it’s not the style that offends as much as the color.

  • Diego!

GURL… THAT is NOT your dress, shoes, hair, make up and nails! Please go back to your house and read Vogue or another fashion magazine to get the idea how to dress properly.

    • Jessica O’Connell

THANK YOU for mentioning the nails. Perhaps it’s because, unlike many ladystars, apparently, I can grow my own nails rather than buying some out of a box, but these square monstrosities could only be more tacky in my opinion if she dedazzled them or something. HATE THIS TREND.

      • Diego!

You are welcome! ^^ I think Vanessa borrowed them from a porn star… I don’t know why, all women who do porn, “wear” these nails O_O

        • formerlyAnon

And one has to wonder how frequently they painfully stab their co-workers. (Or, that’s at least the kind of thing *I* wonder about.) ETA: Or, maybe, they see that threat as a plus? . . .

          • Little_Olive

You betcha. Since porn stars are now forced to wear condoms, there has to be a “danger” element in the mix, no?

      • Lily-Rygh

Sadly, I can’t grow my own, so I am reduced to nails from a box. But Jesus H, they don’t look like THAT! She looks positively witchy, which, on her, is not a compliment.

        • Jessica O’Connell

No offense meant, if taken! I know I am rare that I can grow my own nails and feel lucky for it. And sometimes false nails can look great, but when they look like this, better to just let the world see the short nails, I think.

          • Lily-Rygh

Oh, God, it takes SO much more than that to offend me! I was just giving a shout out for those of us who aren’t lucky enough to be able to grow our own long nails but still know better than to leave the house looking like poor Vanessa here…

          • Jessica O’Connell

Oh yay, just wanted to make sure! Yeah well, she’s not known for her good style choices…

      • OffToSeeHim

The thing is, I can grow my real nails out that long if I choose – but… why would you choose to? If I had millions of dollars, you can bet my nails would look good. Those are just distractingly awful.

      • kimmeister

Scratching an itch with natural nails is the BEST THING EVAR. My husband is so lucky to have me to scratch his back. :-D

      • mhleta

The only thing worse, IMO, are the pointy ones, or the ones with the convex curve. Creepy and very unattractive.

      • mrspotts66

don’t come to new jersey. they’re everywhere. ugh.

        • Jessica O’Connell

I’m from Jersey and was just at the shore for a week. Thankfully, I didn’t see much of these. That would have ruined my vacation!

    • Jessica Freeman

Thank you for making my comment for me. I hate to think square tip nails are coming back in style…

      • Diego!

Hey! Another Jessica agrees with me haha Yes, please see my other comment where I explain the other Jessica where Vanessa got these disgusting nails :P

      • Morgendorffer

Oh they totally are. I got a manicure recently and the woman painting my nails had giant, long, square monstrosities. I was kind of impressed that she was still able to do other people’s nails while she had those things.

      • filmcricket

I’ll take square tips over those claw-like things that JLo and a few others have been sporting lately. In general I feel that nails that prevent you from being able to do things like dial a phone are unattractive, but they are doubly so when they look like actual talons.

        • Jessica Freeman

Personally, I’m not a fan of any long nails unless they are naturally shaped. I can’t grow my nails out either, but I also use the computer and phone a lot and find any length cumbersome. Jlo and the likes have minions to dial for them, I’m sure of it. =)

  • Meg0GayGuys6

I feel like this is her happy place. She seems way more comfortable in this than in the Euro Chic stuff she was wearing before.

It’s not my happy place, but definitely seems to be hers.

  • formerlyAnon

I like the dress a lot, but as you say, it’s a little much for her.

I would like the hair if the top of her head & braid were tidy and not sprouting frizzies and stray bits so copiously that they must have been intentional. (I actually like the braid + tendrils around the face, I think it works with her face and the dress.)

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Had the dress been a mini, I could have given it a pass.
Had the hair been not quite so disheveled, I could have been reasoned with.
But, it is as it is, and it ain’t good.

      • demidaemon

        Most definitely agreed!

      • mhleta

        And cut the sleeves off!

  • greenwich_matron

Ironically, it fits her so well. Maybe a little long in the waist and sleeves (no comment on the hemline).

  • Emily Dagger

Gurl, that is also not your hair. And I mean that both stylistically and literally.

    • ampg

It took me several seconds to figure out it was supposed to be hair at all, honestly. I kept thinking it was some kind of hemp fascinator or something.

      • kimmeister

It would have been 10,000 cooler had it been a hemp fascinator.

      • Monabel

        Hemp fascinator!! Thank you!

  • JasmineAM

Never mind the fugly dress, those nails and hair are not your look.
As a 5’3″ girl, I’ve realized that there ate just some things I can’t wear. You need to accept that too, Vanessa.

    • formerlyAnon

I am about the same height and over 50 and STILL have to sternly talk myself out of some things that just don’t work. It’s very sad and I can see how someone her age who’s getting Really Nice Clothes offered has a hard time with it. Which would be why one employs a trustworthy stylist and trusts them – but that must be way more difficult to do than to advise or there’d be fewer misses on the red carpet.

    • Morgendorffer

Indeed. Short people and tea-length hems do not mix.

  • HVM

You had a good run there Vanessa. But now your hair is really awful and the sloppy placement of your braid is making my eyes twitch. Go away.

  • oatmealpie

She applied the self tanner all the way down to her ankles and got distracted (last photo).

  • charlotte

    Girl, that ain’t anyone’s hair.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

There is a dead cat on this girl’s head. Oh, Vanessa, call your London stylist and beg for them to come across the pond for you. Beg, darling.

    • demidaemon

Poor. poor kitty. It did not deserve this end.

  • NDC_IPCentral

    Tacky, head to toe.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I don’t want to alarm you, Vanessa, but it seems a rats nest landed on your head.

  • Danielle

Girl, that’s not your hair either.

  • Just Me

Why??? She can look so much better than this. Sadly, she is giving the impression that SHE thinks that she looks fabulous, which counts for something, but not enough to save this look. Not your dress, honey. Mama says no.

  • miscorrections

Send it to FloWelch, go home, and apply gin liberally to your fevered brow.

  • hughman

My Grandma Rachael wore this to my cousin’s bar mitzvah. “Look!” she told me “Sophie spilled wine all over it and not one drop is showing! From my mouth to god’s ears!”

  • Eric Stott

I like it up to where it gets all those sheer panels.

  • Amy909

Agreed–the dress, while beautiful, it not for her, and the hair is just way too pinteresty! And I’d just like to add that I hate (what look like) fake long nails! especially on young women! at least they aren’t pointy i guess.

  • Dylgeah

    That’s a whole lotta look.

  • Tatiana Luján

The hair and nails are a disaster, the shoes are boring and the dress, while beautiful, is either too long or too short for her.

  • MaggieMae

On the scroll down, I was expecting more black and less gold. But no, that pattern kept on growing all over. Too much!

  • Trisha26

Gorgeous dress. That hair looks like things got rowdy at the beer hall.

  • Karen Belgrad

Holy crap… now we have to contend with Franken-hair too???????

  • MilaXX

Please call the London gay. He seemed to like you.

    • kmk05

It’s actually day and night, when you compare both looks. It’s just really sad.

  • nannypoo

She’s a pretty girl who seems to try to make herself look as bad as possible. Here she has succeeded.

  • lehen

ugh – those nails. are we really doing the long, fake, square thing again? please no.

  • BrooklynBomber

Cate Blanchett’s? I thought it was Judy Dench’s!

  • alyce1213

The embellishment is stunning. Maybe this would have worked better on her slim and above the knees. And gosh, no pile of crazy tousled hair — a sleek ponytail. If you’re gonna wear an elaborate dress, let it speak for itself.

  • Folk Devil

Psst, Nessa, there’s an animal on your head, and by the looks of it, it’s dead. Just thought you might want to know.

  • marlie

This is not her dress, and even if it was, she’d need to have it hemmed, and have a more sophisticated ‘do.

  • sagecreek

I am full of pride…as I scrolled down, I kept thinking “CATE BLANCHETT.”

I have learned well, I have.

  • sariebee

On the other hand, she’s succeeding with her fashion more than most, because you all are continuing to talk about her even though she hasn’t done anything noteworthy careerwise in 5+ years. Good job, Vanessa…?

  • Karen Dickerson

no no no no no no

  • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

Doing your hair to match the embroidery in your dress is not a good idea. What’s with the blond braid? I actually like the dress. For someone else.

  • NoveltyRocker

But where is the bird that lives on her head?

  • Angela_the_Librarian

The nail are seriously scaring me. The hair would maybe..maybe be passable if it was all the same color and didn’t look so sloppy.

  • ewes_urn_aim

    She made my eyes vomit.

  • DilettanteDeconstructed

    That poor, fried hair. :(

I could see Nicole Kidman in that dress too.

    • MoHub

Pretty much anyone a tad older and a head taller.

  • unbornfawn

Definitely not her dress. Love the dress. Just very wrong on her.

  • Lesley

i’m just waiting for her to kick off her shoes and start dancing around chanting in latin, while casting spells of course.

  • conniemd

I’d like the dress even better if it was sleeveless.

  • Nondescript

Man, I’m sitting here impatiently tapping my foot until Cate Blanchett wears this too.

  • d4divine

No comment because I agree 100%

    • d4divine

She really should call Stevie Nick’s seamstress…style aside…Nick’s is a fan of this drapey flowy look…but her clothes never seem to swallow her small frame. Stand Back Vanessa!!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Somebody distract that poor girl and I’ll snatch that dead animal off her head. Doesn’t she have any friends?

  • CommentsByKatie

I think I sympathize with Ms. Hudgens’ mistakes because they are the same ones I would make if I were a red carpet star. I’m very petite yet I love the crazy garments. For my wedding dress, I wanted something enormous and covered with jewels and wings and levitating and multicolored…yet when I tried those dresses on, I just looked awful in them and I had to let them go. I am ending up in a pretty simple silhouette. But if I were a red carpet star? Girl I would go all out sometimes even if I looked like a hot mess, for the fun of wearing the crazy couture garments. I say, let the girl play. She looks like she’s having the time of her life. And it isn’t completely awful, for her at least. :)

  • mhleta

Gypsy Grandma. Seriously, put her in sensible shoes and a black veil and shes there. Ye, Gods. What an awful thing to put on a tiny, cute young woman.

  • Leah Elzinga

that hairstyle is the best argument against ombre hair I’ve ever seen.

  • stubbornthoughts

    Audible flabbergasted gasp upon scrolling.

  • YoungSally

I thought it might be a Rachel Z dress.

  • kmk05

…..HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NO. I’m sorry, I just can’t. This is ridiculous: the hair in particular is just insane. It’s rendered worse by the ombre effect. The hair is busy, the dress is busier, and her makeup doesn’t go with anything else.

  • appliquer

Girl, people are lying to you. Look in the mirror and go with your gut. This is not it!

  • Florence Whytingale

Absolutely agree with you, TLo. That dress is perfection – just not on her.

  • Anniebet

It looks like a small animal died on her head.

  • superemang

you can’t pull off a temperley. sorry honey.

  • Imasewsure

Wow awful… Bonaroo hair and a stolen dress!!

  • housefulofboys

Too mature dress finished off with old lady nails + old lady polish.

  • anniemcc

OMG, never could the phrase, “Girl, that’s not your hair” be better applied. Because it’s OBVIOUSLY NOT HER HAIR. Like, *literally* not her hair.

  • amanda lynn

    HER NAILS AREN’T POINTY!

  • MarissaLG

    It’s all so…trendy.

  • librarygrrl64

I actually like the dress, but the styling is awful.

  • ralish

I know she’s an actress, but she always looks so happy. It’s kind of refreshing– maybe that’s why I usually give her a fashion “pass.”

  • luckymom22

No duck face! That part I love.

  • Carol

At least she’s not making the duck face in any of these pictures.

  • Stacy Feng

    I can smell the patchouli….
