Face-Off: Gwyneth Paltrow vs Cate Blanchett

Posted on August 19, 2013

Or as we like to call it, “Smug, Blonde, Fragrant White Lady Cagematch!” Who is giving the best face in their latest ad campaigns, darlings? Is it:

Gwyneth Paltrow for Hugo Boss Jour Pour Femme Fragrance

Or could it be:

Cate Blanchett for Giorgio Armani Armani Sí Fragrance

To quote the lesser Cher: As IF. We literally gay-gasped at the sight of Cate and rolled our eyes at Gwyneth.

  • gabbilevy

Heavyweight vs. featherweight. C’mon. Not even fair.

    • Garcia Loca

Not to mention, ad-Cate looks just like RC/pap-Cate, whereas ad-Goop looks like Julianne Hough. She wishes.

      • 3boysful

I was seeing Julianne, too! Weird.

      • kim bunchalastnames

        shopped beyond all recognition.

    • butterflysunita

I know. This competition almost made me feel sorry for Gwyneth.

      • sojourneryouth

Especially with that stupid tagline! I’m sorry, Gwyneth, but it really won’t be you day, Sweetie, so you can stop with the smuggery. Kate’s around, being fierce with every breath she takes, taking you to school.

    • acevedob

Exactly. I mean, Gwyn is just like: “hi there I’m Gwyneth Paltrow and everyone loves me..” Meanwhile, Cate replies: “Gwyneth, I will kill you with this..” and shoots fierceness like poison darts.

  • StellaZafella

    Hands down Cate.

  • savicevic

Cate’s giving FACE. Plus I like her make up/everything better than Gwyneth’s.

  • RussellH88

This is so uneven that it’s insane.

  • Karen Belgrad

It’s like putting a paint by numbers versus a Da Vinci! It’s People Magazine versus Vogue! It’s Justin Bieber versus anyone with a modicum of talent!

  • princessricky

the face is def better, and i’m sure she’s still shopped, but cate actually looks like a real person.

  • Introspective

gwynnie as usual is visibly trying to be prom queen. cate is *just* the queen of giving face. regal oozes from her pores. that is all.

    • Rhonda Shore

Gwynnie can’t help but look coy. THis is no contest! CATE!!!

    • marlie

YES. Gwynnie is projecting “LOOK AT ME!” while Cate just… IS.

      • demidaemon

Also notice: Cate only needed her face and a hand. Goop still needed half her body.

        • Little_Olive

A bad move, because 1) it takes away from the quality of the campaign and 2) that is some weird boob placement.

    • Little_Olive

The whole thing seems pretty amateur to me. Gwynnie’s attitude is not alluring, is conceited. Don’t they know modern consumers are not about the prom queen aspiration anymore?

  • Oh thank baby Jesus. I thought I was in some horrible universe where this could ever be an actual comparison, meaning Cate could in some way lose to Gwyneth.

Goon on Cate’s ad for showing the faintest hint of lines.

    • AnaRoW

That’s the way I felt during that whole Best Actress Oscar debacle of ’99. Unfortunately that time it turned out not be an alternate universe.

    • UsedtobeEP

Interesting is so much more alluring than, well, not.

  • jeanzhane

    Not a fair contest.

  • valerie saenz

    Cate by a landslide.

  • Barb Rayhttp://www.google.com/

Please, Gwynnie looks like an ANTM contestant next to Cate.

    • valerie saenz

I was thinking the same thought.

    • demidaemon

An ANTM contestant who gets booted before they go overseas.

      • Barb Rayhttp://www.google.com/

        Oh, snap!

  • NBG

That is some kind of Photoshop job on Gwynnie’s hair. Does that color even exist in nature?

    • ballerinawithagun

That lemon yellow hair is horrible!

  • abish

“Boss Jour” just seems like a newfangled way for American tourists to embarrass themselves while trying to bond with the French locals.

    • kimmeister

They might end up thinking they are the boss du jour. Even the name of Cate’s perfume is better.

      • StellaZafella

  • kimmeister

I’m intrigued by the placement of Cate’s eyeliner.

    • StellaZafella

You made me go back and look again, Kimmeister:
There seems to be a slightly downward wing to the liner that follows the natural fold of her eye crease (I don’t know the Latin for it) but this extends the eye outward and, coupled with the intensity of Cate’s gaze (I refuse to say ‘smize’ here) gives her a greatly enhanced feline glare sort of like a cat saying “So…the canary’s missing and there’s feathers in my water bowl…prove it…mrowr!?!”

  • nannypoo

Gwynnie throws in a little peek of boob and Cate still wins.

    • Griffinqueen

A peek of boob that still **sigh** has no support. She looks like if she straightened her back, those suckers would roll down to her waist.

      Cate eternally.

  • Tanya Wade

When I see Cate’s face I’m inspired to climb mountains. Shakespeare Barbie is giving me “I’m so sorry you have to do the mopping today, lesser mortal” smugness. No contest.

    • marlie

Yeah, Gwynnie certainly has a mean-girl, rich-bitch vibe that Cate does not.

    • stephbellard

      LMAO @ Shakespeare Barbie.

  • Emily Smith

That’s not a fair fight at all. That’s like “who makes a better hobbit, Elijah Wood or Orlando Bloom”. Come on now. Gwyneth is no Galadriel.

  • Nolo Contendere. It’s Kate.

    • Victor Beiramar Diniz

      it’s Cate with a C, much like Liza with a Z… 😉

  • Ana_ragu

anyone else think that the flat flat flat abdomen on gwynnie was photoshopped? not her fault, but gad, I resent that kind of image manipulation!

    • NMMagpie

Yep… I do that kind of stuff for portraits all the time. Folks actually expect it. 🙁

      • Ana_ragu

well, to be honest, I can see why *I* would ask for it, if I were having a portrait done. but I’m not a celebrity, looked up to and adored (sometimes) and a role model….;-)

  • SewingSiren

This is going to be a landslide. CATE!

  • NMMagpie

Cate is serving IT like only she can. #CateFTW

  • Sara__B

Gwyneth made me laugh. Cate wins, no contest!

  • Jackie4g

How much does my computer hate the Disqus format? That’s how much everyone hate Gwynnie. even if she said something sensible (unusual but possible) you guys would laugh at her.

  • Mary Carpenter

Is it really a fair fight? They photoshopped any kind of character out of Gwyneth’s face.

  • Inspector_Gidget

I think Photoshop is the real winner here.

    • valerie saenz

      Cate’s hands have been shopped.
Everything Paltrow has been altered for smoothness.

  • bxbourgie

Cate FTW. All day, every day. I need Gwyneth to crawl into a hole somewhere and never re-emerge. Tired of that chick.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

    “And bonny Kate and sometimes Kate the curst;
But Kate, the prettiest Kate in Christendom
Kate of Kate Hall, my super-dainty Kate,
For dainties are all Kates, and therefore, Kate” Wm.Shakespeare

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love Taming of the Shrew- you win!

      • Ginny Ellsworth

Credit where credit is due. Jackie4g made me think of it!

“How much does my computer hate the Disqus format?” and I mentally added, let me count the ways!

    • demidaemon

Winner! Especially for using one of my favorite comedies!

  • kipper

I am far from a Mrs. Martin hater ( like the band/ LOVE the mother ) but come on, this little battle should now be the Webster’s definition of the word : spanked.

    • charlotte

Well, I like the band (at least I used to), love Gwynnie’s mother and strongly dislike her.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

I like the Mom and the band is decent.

    • marlie

I LOVE the band, but I still can’t stand Gwyneth.

    • marlie

I LOVE the band, but I still don’t like Gwyneth.

  • marlie

    Gwyneth… whatever. Cate… LUMINOUS.

  • SugarSnap108

I just had an unprecedented moment of feeling bad for Gwyneth Paltrow. It’s gone.

    Cate is a goddess.

    • Donna Tabor

  • Jaeda Laurez

The Paltrow looks boring. Cate looks like “SI,” because how could you even think to say “No” to those eyes?

  • Carrie Levin

Cate looks like she smells good!

    • Ginny Ellsworth

I was just wondering that! Looking at the pictures, Cate smells enchanting and Goopy smells entitled.

  • CNM

“Today is going to be your day”?!?! That is a nauseating GOOP phrase.

  • PeggyOC

Is this even a contest? Cate, all the way.

  • housefulofboys

Si! As if there is any question.

  • hughman

“I fuck the Tennis Pro.” vs. “Fuck tennis.”

    • formerlyAnon

      You have a special genius.

    • StellaZafella

I might as well just stay logged onto this site as long as you have anything to say…just to “like” your insane humour!

  • Jamie M.

    Cate all the way.

  • lehen

gweneth looks like “surfer barbie” next to cate. not even a contest.

  • Chuck Barthelme

What I love about Cate is that her sexiness seems to come from somewhere inside of her. It’s hard to put a finger on what it is about her. It’s almost an aura. Totally agree, she blows Gwyneth out of the proverbial water.

    • marlie

She exudes charm. It’s effortless for Cate.

  • flamingoNW

Anyone else think the peek of boob on Gwyneth has a bit of photoshop magic going on?

  • TerryMarie

That’s the best Gwyneth’s hair has looked in ages, but it’s still no contest: Blanchett in a lay-down.

    • Kelly

Surely that hair is photoshopped or a wig or has extensions or *something*. It’s far thicker, heavier, and healthier-looking than GP’s usual hair. I’d be surprised if her actual hair could ever be made to look like that.

  • MilaXX

Pfft! Was there ever a question? Cate by a land slide.

    • Ginny Ellsworth

      Wasn’t Landslide a Stevie Nicks song? 😉

  • berkeleygirl

Cate – she doesn’t even look PhotoShopped!!! GOOP got a lot of – unnecessary, I’d add – help. Boo to Boss!!!

  • unbornfawn

Like, this is even a contest? Cate by a landslide and she is smoldering and she doesn’t even have to show a glimpse of one of the girls.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

goop is a robot… an annoying one

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I like the way Cate’s hand is resting on the “S” in “Sì”. Cate looks better and so does her ad.

  • stayl

Does Paltrow really move products? I repeatedly see her on the list of lowest selling magazine covers every year. I see her Estee Lauder ads more often than I see Estee Lauder ads with Joan Smalls and Liu Wen. I’d rather see those two. Now this. What a charmed life some people have.

    • Not applicable

i get the sense that she is very well connected. The old adage of it’s all about ‘who you know.’ In her case, I believe it can never hurt to have Steven Spielberg as your godfather…

  • Imasewsure

I know it’s blasphemy but I don’t like the Cate cover at all… I actually have to give it to Gwynnie and her “real girl freshness” here…. Sorry love me anyway please

    • Adriana_Paula

Unborn fawn love is unconditional love, m’love.

  • Wendy Lane Bailey

Cate! It’s not just that she’s gorgeous, which doesn’t hurt, but that she looks like she has something to say. Style & substance win every time…at least they should.

  • joancarol

It’s not even fair. Goopy vs ethereal.

  • ringthing

Goop wins smug face, that’s for sure.

  • formerlyAnon

Can’t possibly be a fair face-off, since both are at the mercy of photo manipulation, photography, and the ad campaign’s choices.

That said, it’s Cate’s photo I find more compelling.

  • Scott Cooper

To be fair, the photo editing for Cate is far superior.

  • carolynmo

    Cate, no question!

  • Cate looks lovely and natural, Gwenyth looks fake and pretentious. Cate all the way!

  • ThaliaMenninger

As IF. Cate is a goddess.

  • Not applicable

    yah! me too!

  • Monkey Toe

Gwynnie is lucky to be able to stand upright after all of her organs were removed to amke her torso that small.

  • Pudgy Possum

    Cate is first-rate!

  • BazoDee

I’m so happy you added that last sentence! As if indeed! I wonder who got paid more though?

    • Julie

      Pretty sure Cate did.

    • María José Benites Peralta

Well, Cate. She was paid 10 million dollars for the campaign.

  • Belvane

That black eyeliner and matte lipstick aren’t doing Cate any favors, but her hands look lovely.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Goop got hit pretty hard with the photoshop stick and she’s fighting outside of her weight class. Cate. No question. TKO.

  • Qitkat

    As if! Ditto.

  • minervathena

I mean, it’s Gwyneth Paltrow vs. SHE WHO WOULD BE A QUEEEEEEEEENNN [insert terrifying Galadriel image here]. No contest.

  • alyce1213

    Oh please. As IF.

  • crash1212

I think they both look great and as they’re going for different things, I refuse to choose. I will say that’s the best Gwyneth’s hair has looked in ages.

  • giddypony

Hate hate hate Gwennie’s boob peek

  • kmk05

Cate’s giving so much face it’s unbelievable. CATE FTW!

I find that the lack of any sort of shadow under Gwyneth’s boob (not the one we see via her cleavage) is really strange. That slightly blurred effect is also not really doing her any favours. The Photoshop is a bit weird all round, unfortunately!

  • MoHub

I’m getting a Catherine Deneuve kind of vibe from Cate, and that’s always a good thing.

  • d4divine

    Same here!

  • uprightcitizen

I’m not one of the ones on the Paltrow hate train (there’s no room on that train; it’s packed), but I fail to see how a side-eyed, obviously pained smirk is going to make anyone want to buy a perfume. And besides, when it comes to an amazing “look right through you” gaze, Blanchett is practically unbeatable. There are stars who could give her a run for her money in a campaign like this (Kate Winslet comes to mind), but Gwynnie isn’t one of them.

  • queeniethebold

    Gwyneth: cheap, obvious, smirky.

    Cate: Cool, beautiful, knowing. Perfection.

  • LaSylphide

Oh please. Is there even a question who would win a G vs C face off? Cate all the way.

  • GorgeousThings

Oh puh-leeze, it’s not even close. Kate FTW.

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

Cate wins by far, but even her fragrance is more elegant. I love that name!

  • sagecreek

What did they do to GP’s face? It doesn’t even look like her.

Regardless, she ain’t in Cate’s class.

  • deelup

Does the perfume Gwyneth promotes come in a collectible airbrush shaped bottle?

  • mjude

    bowing down ONLY to Cate

  • Danielle

How is this even a question?

  • CeeQ

Yeah no contest. Cate all the way.

  • JDreesen

i am concerned about the part that says the fragrance *features* Gwyneth Paltrow.

that’s the kind of tagline i’d maybe expect from a perfume called Hugo Boss: Soylent (“de la” femme instead of “pour”, natch).

  • stubbornthoughts

This just isn’t even fair. Gwen looks really tampered with, and that toothless smile is seriously freaking me out.

    Cate looks positively lovely.

  • decormaven

“She wins in a waltz,” – Cate

  • ashtangajunkie

Cate by a big, fat landslide.

  • MoHub

Gwyneth seems to be selling Gwyneth; Cate is selling the fragrance.

  • mrsdalgliesh

Even the positioning tells the story. Gwynnie is going off somewhere and you, the viewer, are left behind. Cate has settled down and has eyes only for you.

  • Judy_J

Cate looks like Cate. Gwennie looks like a bad effigy in a Madame Toussad’s rip-off House of Wax.

  • pippitypup

Are you kidding? Goopy vs Galadriel? Elf Queen vs …whatever Goopy is. Looks human, but isn’t as human as your average orc.

    Galadriel FTW!

    • conniemd

This picture of her reminds me of the scene in the Fellowship, where Galadriel greets the Fellowship and reads the minds of Boromir and Frodo. GOOP is smirk, Cate is POWER.

  • demidaemon

Pfft. Cate Blanchett by a mile.

  • NinjaCate

    Lol at “the lesser Cher”.

  • elemspbee

uh ya. this is not a fez off. not in the same category at all. Gwyneth giving fake sweet smile; how could they approve that look for the product?

  • iheartbuffy

uh, why is this even a question?

  • greyhoundgirl

Agreed, of course. Cate has mystery, connects to the viewer (wait–you mean she’s not looking deeply into my eyes?), a sense of luxury. Gwyneth– just another blonde smirking at the camera.

  • René Christoffer

Oh.. I’m just really tired of the constant slagging Gwyneth off comments.. superficial and way too easy..

    • Nondescript

Yeah, I do like Blanchett more than I like Paltrow, but the Paltrow hate gets old fast. She’s fine at what she does. She’s very pretty. It’s not her fault few actresses can compete with Blanchett giving face.

  • Dagney

    CATE. duh.

  • cowper

Goop might have a good day now and then, whereas it’s Cate’s DECADE.

  • Therese Bohn

    Cate by a mile! Wow.

  • Cameron Turner

    Cate for sure…

  • Cate, hands-down winner. Gwyneth is a wannabe.

  • Shawn EH

Neither is flattering. I like Cate edgier, and I like Gwyneth more invisible to human eyes.

  • Laurie Landry

    You had me at Cate.

  • Lilyana_F

Not even in the same orbit these two…

  • pugluv

Cate Blanchet is GORGEOUS and classy…Gwyneth is neither.

  • Betsy

Gwyneth is TRYing to be sexy. Cate simply IS sexy.

By the way, I’ve never cared for that smirk that Gwyneth has on her face. It’s the “I’m still in middle school and don’t want you to see my braces” smile. Nor the “look over your shoulder and out the side of your eye like you have a secret” pose. No one wants to KNOW her secret.

  • LJCdoc

As if indeed. You don’t even have to ask; Cate all the way.

  • e jerry powell

As if. Tilda Jr. wipes the floor with the GOOPster.

  • anotherkate

Cate Blanchett makes me want to buy her ridiculously expensive SK-II skin-water-serum thingy. Her skin is insanely perfect.

  • María Foulquié

    as if, in deed

  • E. D.

Cate over Gwyneth. Always. I can’t think of a single way, except maybe shilling $600 T-shirts, where Gwyneth would win.

  • paintedfish

Cate wins, hands down. Also, Jour Pour Femme makes me think of my “ladies’ days”. I think I’ll start using that now. “Sorry honey, it’s my jour pour femme.”

  • Passionflora

    Cate, unequivocally.

  • Gina Mondzelewski Small

Why all the love for Cate? She looks like she’s been drugged.

  • conniemd

Gwenneth may have had Shakespeare in love with her, but Cate wore a Ring of Power. BAM.

  • Anniebet

    Class vs no class.

  • If I were to see either of these ladies on the street or in the supermarket, I believe that Gwyneth would be more attractive. She has a friendlier face. But Kate’s ad wins hands down. Kate gives great face; that’s all there is to it. Her features are more dramatic. Look at her lips! She is stunning in this ad.

  • stephbellard

FYI: To my generation, Clueless’ heroine is NOT the lesser Cher.

  • AnneElliot

    Cate FTW. No contest.

And when did Gwyneth get boobs? Are those just photoshopped in for the ad? Please.

  • lrhoff

    Cate has it hands down!

  • Peeve

Is it me, or does Gwyneth just look smug? (Sorry if that’s been mentioned before. I haven’t read the other comments yet!) I have never found her all that terribly attractive, so it might just be my own bias. Cate looks stunning.

    • Lisa McKissack

not just you. I think that’s her default face.

  • María José Benites Peralta

Cate always win, no matter what. She is ridiculously beautiful and actually looks like a real model. Gwynnie on the other hand…

  • Tatiana Luján

It’s a shame that every inch of both theis skins are photoshoped, but Cate is certainly gasp – worthy.

  • par3182

    It’s a rematch of the 1998 Oscars!

So where the hell is Fernanda Montenegro’s ad?

  • sisterb67

God help me but the minute I read that the Boss Jour fragrance is “featuring Gwyneth Paltrow”, my brain went immediately to the Sex Panther cologne from Anchorman (“It’s made with bits of real panther, so you know it’s good!”).

  • Puh-LEEZE. Gwynnie might have been good in a ’70s ad for “Charlie” (remember Shelley Hack?) but Cate is giving me Catherine Deneuve for Chanel (“You don’t have to ask him. He knows what you want.”) flashbacks, in a good way. No contest.

    • MoHub

Glad to see I wasn’t the only one thinking Deneuve. And yes, I’m old enough to remember Shelley Hack and those Charlie ads.

  • Sweetvegan

“lesser Cher”! LOL! An awesome movie, even if she is the lesser Cher.

  • oklund

I’ve always had a hard time telling them apart, but Blanchett wins every classiness contest.

  • Oh Cate. No other words.

  • DominoEstella

you guys are funny, of course Cate

  • i dont think i could judge those two fairly if i tried.
to be honest, cate looks a little scary here.

  • Sushy Gooroo

I must admit I am not an expert but honestly I always thought they were the same person, and the Gwyneth one was that person when she was drunk.

  • putacorkinit

Pity there wasn’t a shot of Tilda Swinton to finish off with, advertising WD40.

  • Ms_Flyover

You had me for a minute, boys. Call it scroll down “phew – not losing it”

  • Sunraya

Gwyneth has her Joker smile on again. Batman lives!!!

  • PeaceBang

Although I want to smack the smug smirk off Gwynnie’s face, I think her hair looks great with some volume in it. Very “Talented Mr. Ripley,” in which she looked fab (and was also p’owned by Cate).

  • kimiakay

Photoshop photoshop photoshop. Photoshop robots. Yuck. And I agree with kingderella, Blanchett does look scary.

  • Cate used to have freckles. Wonder where they went.

    • kookee

no she didn’t. you obviously haven’t seen pics of her when she was in her teens-early twenties. she always had a milky complexion.

      • I just read about how she had to have each freckle applied for when she played Katherine Hepburn in that Howard Hughes movie. But check out Oscar and Lucinda – with Ralph Fiennes. She’s very freckled, and truly it looks quite natural.
