Emmy Rossum in Moschino Cheap & Chic and RED Valentino

Posted on August 28, 2013

Let’s discuss this look, darlings.

Emmy Rossum celebrates the release of Ali Larter’s new cookbook “Kitchen Revelry” with Perrier-Jouet at Sunset Tower in West Hollywood, California in a Moschino Cheap & Chic sweater paired with a RED Valentino skirt and a Rebecca Minkoff clutch.

Moschino Cheap & Chic Gem Embellished Monochrome Sweater. RED Valentino Black A-line Skirt with Ivory Trim.

We thought it was super-cute at first glance, but something about it seemed just a little off to us. Upon conferring, we’ve come to the conclusion that both the top and the skirt are very cute, but they don’t feel quite like they belong together. The shapes don’t pair up all that well and the twee little bow sash doesn’t really go with that heavily beaded neckline. Proof (to us, anyway) that sometimes you can’t even pair up two B&W pieces without having them fight each other a little. We still maintain that she looks pretty cute, but there’s this feeling that it’s not working as well as it should.

    • Random Compliments

I love this. I think she looks fresh, young, comfortable and cute.

      • Jessica O’Connell

I love this too. I actually thought it looked like a dress until I scrolled down to see the separate pieces.

    • Diego!

I think she looks gorgeous and she knows it! Good for her! It’s simple and chic. I love it!

    • sagecreek

So cute, but I’d lose the belt.

      • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Agreed. The belt makes the outfit look like it’s trying to hard. Which is a shame because it’s as adorable as she is.

      • Louise Bryan

It’s not clear to me that the “belt” is removable. It just looks like part of the skirt.

        • Getoverit

At first glance the belt looked fake, like it was just stiches on the skirt. Almost cartoonish.

          • conniemd

the description of the skirt is “black A-line skirt with ivory trim” which suggests it is not a “belt” but trim made to look like a belt.

    • Granny panties

I think she looks great. I generally like her style.

    • GSMSF

I think she looks cute, but why is she wearing winter clothes in August? Is this some fad or something?

      • sagecreek

        Hey, at least she’s bootie-free.

      • Isabel

Remember, that in winter, the ladies wear sleeveless dresses!

    • hughman

      Hello Doily!

      • rh33

        Hughman, you make my day!

    • crash1212

I suppose it shows my ignorance that I thought the skirt was actually going to BE red….right?

    • moxie_lady

I adore this, I call it a WERQ! I actually thought it was a dress, that’s how well I think the two pieces harmonize. Also: want the bag, love the ring. And: perfect low-key fresh makeup, SHINNNNNYYY hair. Serious hair envy. Gosh, she’s purty. ETA: Do we know who makes that clutch? No way could I ever afford it, but inquiring minds want to know.

      • capybara_cafe

I, too, thought it was one piece at first glance. I think it’s adorable together.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I agree, I think this totally deserves a WERQ!

      • Golfkat

The clutch is a mirrored octagon clutch from Rebecca Minkoff! :)

    • Trisha26

      Def twee but very cute.

    • MilaXX

It’s just too twee for her and doesn’t really suit her personality to me.

    • andreawey

I think it’s adorable and I especially like the skirt, the belt makes it look like a cartoon skirt….. not sure what that means but it’s cute

      • kimmeister

I totally thought the belt looked animated too (in a good way).

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Works for me, in fact I love it.

    • Sarah Thomas

If this is a glimpse fro mthe future and she’s wearing it in December, then I love it.

    • TigerLaverada

I think the top & skirt look really good together. I wish she’d brushed her hair though. But I think that of a lot of these starlets with messy floppy hair. I’m old.

      • moxie_lady

So funny, I am seriously envious of how coiffed yet carefree her hair looks. If you want to see messy, floppy hair, come see me pretty much every day (I’m super curly though, so there’s that?).

    • bassfemme

At first glance, I thought it was a trompe l’oeil belt/bow. Even though it *is* real, the look feels like a tuxedo tee shirt.

      • ampg

I didn’t realize it wasn’t until I saw your comment. That makes me like it less, actually.

      • sagecreek

Oh, thank you, bassfemme, I had exactly the same reaction.

      • ballerinawithagun

I just assumed it was trompe l’oeil since it is Moschino and they love that surrealism thing. But you are correct, the belt moved!

    • Eric Stott

Tired Secretary. Looks as if she picked up her jewel box and brought it with her.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

That skirt is super cute. But as always, it’s about her million watt smile.

    • Imasewsure

She looks high in that first shot…. and her shoes are boring but I like the outfit. Not earth-shattering but cute (and she looks high)

    • Jacquelyn

Great individual pieces, LOVE that skirt, but it’s too much together. It feels like slightly scandalous funeral wear. Needs a pop somewhere, maybe in the shoes?

      • capybara_cafe

I just love the phrase “scandalous funeral wear”, lol.

    • capybara_cafe

I see what you mean about the beading on the top, but I still think it looks super cute together. And I’m in love with that clutch <3

    • Tatiana Luján

      I love it.

    • Leah Elzinga

Also, it’s not November, but I suppose that’s to be expected at this point.

    • kimmeister

That sweater is “cheap and chic” for only $566. Why, I find that kind of change rolling around in my pockets every day! [/sarcasm]

The clutch is amazing though. We wantsssss it.

      • moxie_lady

I grit my teeth every time I see that moniker! So distorted. It doesn’t help that I covet pretty much everything they design. That retro, cartoony look is so up my alley (if you knock off a zero or three).

    • Eric J.

Looks like a great first-day-of-school dress.

      • Eric Stott

Yes! If the skirt were a few inches longer it could be Catholic.

    • decormaven

Something about it gives me an Alice in Wonderland vibe.

    • Lizzyisi

“We still maintain that she looks pretty cute, but there’s this feeling that it’s not working as well as it should.” I totally agree, especially because that bag is so very evening glamorous and the outfit is daytime. Hair, make-up, little earrings all look nice with either the top or the skirt (but not both, because they don’t quite work together), but that bag makes no sense with the outfit.

    • nannypoo

If the beading from the top were switched with the little sash it would be a perfect naughty French maid costume.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I want to like it, but it leaves me with the feeling that it would like really cheap (and not in a good way) in person.

    • bellafigura1

Exactly right — cute apart, not cute together.

    • LauraAgain

I think it works. Her hair looks a bit sloppy, though.

    • CommentsByKatie

Love her, love this look. J’adore the bag.

    • guest2visits

I don’t like either of these pieces. I’m just amazed they look as good as they do on her.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I feel this is Taylor Swift’s ensemble.

    • Donna Tabor

Au contraire, T-Lo. The sum is more than the whole of its parts, in this case. Neither of those pieces are much on their own, but together they are super cute.

    • Sonja Brisson

Why does everything just look like a costume and not couture lately?

    • Alloy Jane

Yeah, I agree with the uncles. I saw it and thought “I like it but I don’t like it.” I really do love the skirt with the cartoon bow. I think if the beading on the top was just an outline in smaller beads, it would’ve worked. Ah well, almost.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Ali Larter has done a cookbook? Is that an expected career move? Anyway, I understand going big with the twee for a cookbook launch.

    • merciblahblah

She is gorgeous, and I am insanely jealous of her hair. And I WISH I could pull off the “no-makeup” eye makeup and not look like I just woke up after a 72-hour sleep binge. Alas, I cannot…

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.com/ Catherine

I think those pieces look perfect together – and I really love her simple makeup!

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I really like this a lot! And I don’t mean this as an insult in any way, but the design is just a little “kitchen-y”, which since it’s a party for a cookbook makes it perfect. It’s stylish, cute and totally appropriate for the event.

    • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

I think she looks fresh and and she knows it.

    • Tanya Wade

Well call me one twee mofo, I love it! One of the few celeb outfits I know I could wear and rock. Not as well as Ms. Emmy, of course. Never.

    • MaggieMae

Add me to the chorus of LOVE IT.

    • ConnieBV

I love it, belt and all. She needs some twee in her life, this kid’s too serious.

    • Laura Renee

      Flawless face and hair.

    • fuchaforeva

This is SO mismatched! Those pieces don’t go together AT ALL, it’s so obvious I can’t believe her pro people did not get it. Anyway her image is always so boring, she cries for a make over, some edge, some funk and sass.

    • Danielle

      Well… I like the clutch a lot.
