Emma Roberts on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”

Posted on August 09, 2013

She doesn’t look remotely comfortable in this dress.

Emma Roberts makes an appearance on the “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” show at Rockefeller Center in New York City in a cream colored dress with black accents.

It’s a combo of it simply not being her dress and it not being an appropriate dress for a sit-down interview. On the first point: it’s too fussy for her. She does really well in streamlined looks with a slight boho feel to them. This fussy princess shit is not in her wheelhouse. On the second point: it’s a very stiff dress, which becomes more obvious when she sits down, the illusion netting gets center stage when she sits down, and the irregular hem on the skirt seems to be providing her some anxiety when she sits down. It’s just not working on any level.

I really like this dress, and I might even like it on Emma, but NOT for a sit-down interview.

      • DilettanteDeconstructed

It looks like the costumes I used to wear in figure skating competitions.

      • snarkmeister

I just assumed this dress was chosen for its obvious callback to a couple of Julia’s dresses in Pretty Woman: the neckline is very similar to the red dress she wore to the opera, and the scalloping points to the black dress she wore to dinner with the old guy and his grandson.

      • Isabel

And the netting is not cheap! But it makes the dress seem less expensive.

      • MoHub

Illusion netting is the Devil’s textile.

    • Dan_In_NYC

You nailed it. “I’m uncomfortable in this” is written all over her face. And with her body and face, she should be serving knockout.

      • drdarke

“Fallon – stop trying to look up my dress!”

Honestly, she’d look more appropriately dressed if she was wearing her boyfriend’s shirt with heels, and nothing else….

    • Karen Belgrad

I think this would look better on a red-head Emma Stone, but in a rich color (emerald?)

    • JauntyJohn

It’s never a good sign when there’s no subtle place to clip the mic.

    • appliquer

Not a good look at all – even standing. Please, lemmings, end the black and white trend.

    • kinziesays

Random, probably dumb question I’ve always wondered about this site: where do T&L get these stills from? Also, where do they get the stills from Mad Men and Project Runway?

      • MilaXX

From having helped run a site once upon a time, there are services that provide pictures and some time the show’s PR will provide pics. Or you can do it the old fashion way and screen grab from your computer.

        • kinziesays

Interesting! I clearly know nothing about how these type of sites run. I always wondered about the Mad Men and Project Runway stills in particular. They seemed so impossibly clear to be screen grabs.

          • MilaXX

They might not be. Lifetime may be sending them to them.

          • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Mad Men is mostly screencaps with some promo photos provided by AMC. Ditto Project Runway and Lifetime. Pictures like these are purchased from the wire services; in this case, Getty Images.

    • DilettanteDeconstructed

Take off the weird tulip-like outer layer of the skirt and replace the illusion netting with a black panel, and I think it would work better. Maybe with a stronger smokey eye.

    • MilaXX

I’ll add another critique; she is too pale for a white dress & illusion netting will never match her skin tone.

      • Darren Nesbitt

Does Illusion netting come in only 2-3 tones? It rarely seems to match.

        • MilaXX

No, but if the dress is borrowed they are going to match the netting to the borrowers skin

    • teensmom99

      Too pretty woman.

    • Tracy_Flick

She looks like she’s about to cry in that last pic.

    • formerlyAnon

IMO, you left out that this is a rather strange dress. It’s more like a couple of leaves or flower petals folded up into an improvised container in which to put a gift. For, or from, the woodland fairies.

Which, I guess, when I type it out might sound like a great concept for a woman’s dress to some people. [gag]

    • Anniebet

I’m not a big fan of spray tans, but that might have helped her legs look less, uh…veiny and mottled? The dress is a huge misstep for her. Pretty face and hair though.

      • j_anson

Yes, god forbid a woman show evidence of having a circulatory system.

    • Cynica

That look screams “One wrong move and I’m showing my boobs and/or the good china.”

Kittens, my Madam Cleo prediction is that this is the next young starlet that we will have to witness implode. She is not easing into her fame, she doesn’t appear to have a decent style team, does that mean she is lacking support in other areas? My guess is yes. And at the very, very least, this is not her dress.

      • minnye

Well said. If I were in that position with that dress, I’d feel extremely exposed. And uncomfortable.

      • formerlyAnon

        Props for Madam Cleo reference.

      • porcupie

Also, there’s the fact that she committed domestic violence against her boyfriend.

        • Catiline

Yeah, this. Plus the PR attempt to spin it as “passionate young love!” was really offensive.

        • Laylalola

Weirdly, she’s getting almost as much bad publicity for trying to cut in line for a cronut.

    • stubbornthoughts

Methinks her publicist told her to wear something Susie-Q since she recently got arrested for domestic violence.

That being said, this looks terrible in the sit down shot.

    • flamingoNW

Everything you said, plus the black looks almost like duct tape wrapped around the sleeve. Weird dress.

      • Nayasabrina

I thought her arm was being redacted for some reason when she sat down. Certainly a random design element…

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      illusion netting *shakes fist*

    • Jeremiah Capacillo

Good Lord she’s worse than Lea Michele.

    • gurl boy

What at first appears to be a sleek simple look…after one second it became a fussy overworked bridesmaid get up!

    • Calinda_L

Also: the shoes. Honey, if you can’t walk in them, don’t walk in them. End. Of. Story.

    • librarygrrl64

Is it the dress? She always seems a little uptight and highly-strung to me.

    • largishbearishAtlish

Surely there is a ‘gays for hire’ open somewhere near her? Maybe a gay intervention? (do they do that) or T’lo can quietly slip a few phone numbers under her dressing room door? (maybe Lifetime can give her some designer phone #s…)
she looks pained in these pictures…I hope the interview wasn’t as ackward as the dress…sigh

    • Malice Grant

She, too, looks hungry. And cold. I’d recognize the blue undertones of a pink-skinned maiden any day.

    • conniemd

Her bare legs look really ugly in this particular dress, out of proportion or something, not sure what.

    • nannypoo

      Wow. So happy.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

      At least she’s not slouching.

    • https://twitter.com/athoughtfultree Robin Yé Chen

The overskirt should have ended above the underskirt.

    • Imasewsure

I like the dress but not for this venue. Also like all girly things, it needs combat boots

      • formerlyAnon

I’ll back you and the combat boots here. This dress needs grounding.

      • j_anson

I certainly think she would have looked less uncomfortable on lower heels. She’s giving off an air of really NEEDING that help with the stairs to the stage.

    • Darva Sutra

She’s trying to erase her Cronut Debacle of yesterday with this toothache-sweet dress. And the earlier MUCH nastier incident of violence against her boyfriend. Ain’t working, honey. But, how hilarious that she had a Cronut Debacle anyway? “Don’t you know who I am?” (Google it if you haven’t heard) Surely the grandiose delusions run deep in this gene pool.

    • Tracy Walker

I think the crazy in her eye might be more about her fear the domestic abuse incident will come up in conversation and less about the dress she’s wearing. Girlfriend rarely reaches this level of perky in real life.

    • Contralto

Look at Jimmy, such a mensch, helping her up the stairs.

    • Candigirl1968

She seems to be one of those people who does not have a clear personal style so folks keep throwing outfits at her – a la spaghetti on the wall – to see what might stick. As a result, if she stumbles onto something flattering that she’s comfortable in, chances are we will never see anything remotely like it again.

    • Diego!

She opens up her mouth in order to inhalate the most amount of air she can in that dress… Girl loosen it up a bit!!

    • BPlease

I cannot applaud an attempted cronut line-cutter. Her face-splitting smile was an attempt to not seem as cronut-shady as she is. Nor can I give snaps to someone in a ‘passionate relationship’ where cops must come and regulate a starlet from continuing to abuse (‘express her passions to’) her partner. This hiddy dress is the least of it.

    • Danielle

I liked it until I saw how obvious the illusion netting was.

    • kimmeister

      This is Audrey-bot’s dress.
