Elizabeth Banks on the Set of “Love & Mercy”

Posted on August 15, 2013

Lizzy is serving up some late ’80s realness on the set of her new movie.

Elizabeth Banks on the set of the Brian Wilson biopic, “Love & Mercy,” in which she play’s Wilson’s second wife, Melinda, in Los Angeles.

Love your big-ass butterfly belt and pantyhose, girl. It’s a look. You’re gonna need a couple cans of AquaNet and some teasing time, though.

I’m pretty sure this woman once tried to convince my mother at the mall that Avon perfume kept away mosquitos.

    • kimmeister

So are their “Skin so soft” mosquito repellent wipes just repackaged perfume?

      • hughman

Well in the 70s it was just called “hand cream”.

      • formerlyAnon

        Hand & body lotion.

      • MilaXX

I think it was lotion and they found out by accident that it repelled mosquitoes and then they expanded the line and used that to their advantage.

        • kimmeister

Now that’s what I call serendipity!

          • demidaemon

They do work. We have some in the house right now, as my mom is an Avon lady.

          • kimmeister

            I have some, I know! :-)

          • Linda LaPaz

            It was originally bath oil.

          • Louise Bryan

As I recall, I find it at least as repellent as a mosquito would. Nasty smelling stuff.

    • Getoverit

Ha! We swear by Avon’s Skin So Soft for the skeeters. Not as chemically ridden as the bug sprays but work well.

  • kayleymaybe

The shoulder pads are what do it for me.

  • tonibaloney

Didn’t Carrie wear a butterfly belt like that for almost an entire season of SATC?

  • kimmeister

My shoulders are eternally grateful that I was only a child in the 80′s and didn’t have to suffer through gigantic shoulder pads in my workwear.

  • nannypoo

I always loved those giant shoulder pads. I thought they made my hips look small.

    • VictoriaDiNardo

      What – they didn’t? Oh no…

My sister had a bra with should pads attached, so that she need never be pad-less! I just settled for pinning them into my dresses. I recently found a bag of should pads in a fabric bin I was cleaning out, looked at them, and put them back in. You never know!

Mine had velcro that you put around the bra strap. So if the blouse or top shifted, you didn’t have extra breasts or shoulder pads in the middle of your back.

I had several pairs of these (in different colors). Oh the shame!

I attached my old shoulder pads to hangers. Works great for knits. :)

  • Qitkat

What a cute white dress! I giggled when I got to the lavender house slippers.

    • 3boysful

What? Stars don’t wear stilettos all the time?!

  • Julie Chase

Those nails are giving me SUCH flashbacks to being at church with my mom when I was little. I would tap on her long painted nails during the homily. Heh.

    • flamingoNW

I was just going to say – the nail color is a perfect detail

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I love her perfect, flawless skin. The rest…. ehhhh, my life wouldn’t be empty without it.

  • MilaXX

I had one of those giant belts. I wore them with my tightest jeans.

  • Jen

Well her ‘handler’ looks pretty cute.

  • Tanya Wade

I can positively SMELL the Jean Nate!

    • bellafigura1

I dunno, I’m thinking we fast forward to Charlie, circa Shelly Hack.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

        Yeah, that sounds about right.

      • Rand Ortega

I can hear Bobby Short singing the jingle, “Kinda Free, kinda WOW! Charlie!”

      • meowing

I recently cleaned out stuff lurking in a bathroom drawer, and I’ll be darned if I didn’t find a bottle of Charlie! Hey, I might try a squirt & see if it turned. Question is, though: how would I know??

  • Beardslee

A skirt with some drape and length was a wonderful thing. At least we could move in the ’80s.

  • CatherineRhodes

Talking about ’80s style — how about the long acrylic fingernails?

    • Jessica Freeman

In hot pink or fire engine red.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Definitely Revlon Red with a tiny 14K gold heart in the nail of my ring finger.

PS That polish left little red streaks on everything I touched.

  • Nondescript

Damn, that first picture literally looks like a 1980s romance novel cover. Her hair looks like it was painted lovingly by an artist that really likes wavy hair. All that’s missing is Fabio.

  • aahlife

She is drinking my favorite beverage, which is what I happen to be sipping right now. Tejava – tea – nothing else – no additives or sugars. My drug of choice – especially when a mid afternoon (right now) pick me up is required.

    • random_poster

Me too! I threw a lemon wedge in mine. Virtual *clink*!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Her hair in that first picture is everything high school me ever wanted. FLASHBACKS!

  • conniemd

Don’t need teasing and aquanet to be a California surfer girl. High teased hair didn’t keep when you went to the beach a lot. I don’t remember it being that big in California. She really does have the California girl look, though.

    I had that Barbie!!

  • SummerSquash

    Those nails are perfect. Flashbacks.
