Downton Abbey Ladies Season 4 Photo Call

Posted on August 08, 2013

The upstairs and downstairs ladies of Downton Abbey strapped on their heels, slapped on their warpaint, and shocked their fanbase once again with their bold and modern ways.

Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Phyllis Logan, Joanne Froggatt and Sophie McShera attend PBS History’s “Downton Abbey” Season 4 Photo Call in Beverly Hills, California.

Michelle Dockery in Elie Saab

We’d have put her in a different top and shoes, but this is still pretty good as-is, considering how many missteps are in poor Lady Mary’s red carpet history.

Laura Carmichael in Moschino Cheap and Chic

This is pretty cute. It might be a little too cute for a grown woman, but she’s selling it. It must be such a relief for her to get out in front of cameras without the sour face and without being made up to look like the ugly sister.

Phyllis Logan

This is probably the best thing we’ve ever seen her in. We’ve only ever seen her wear kinda loud, tacky-looking outfits, or matronly ones. This is stylish and pretty. Don’t love the color of the shoes, but that’s the only complaint.

Joanne Froggatt in Camilla and Marc

She wins this red carpet, hands down. She always was the most stylish of the cast. Not crazy about the hair, but the outfit’s gorgeous.

Sophie McShera in Zara

Damn. Daisy’s got quite the bod on her. It’s a shame the dress, tight as it is, kinda reads as “Sunday School teacher.” A more youthful print would’ve been a huge help here. And girl, that’s not your lip color.

  • Rebecca Damsen

Are Micelle and Joanne wearing the same shoes?

    • Dorothy & Michael n/a

      sure looks that way.

    • Emily

They are similar but I’m quite sure, after far too much scrolling, that they are indeed different.

  • hughman

Personally I wouldn’t watch a “Facts of Life” reunion but Mrs. Garrett looks nice here.

    • zenobar

      You are in tuh-RUB-buhl!

    • decormaven

      Killing it! [Bows down.]

  • Diego!

Joanne and Laura are the best indeed! The others… meh

    • Heather

Absolutely right! We are going to see more of these two in the future (and I think Sophie could be stunning if you took her in hand and showed her how to dress!)

  • Judy_S

Froggatt looks amazing. Laura Carmichael looks adorable. Everybody else looks really good.

  • Mrs Hughes throws me for a loop every time I see her on the red carpet.

  • I had NO IDEA that was Lady Edith. Like, none. And damn, Daisy. Damn.

    • majorbedhead

Me either! I had to scroll down to her solo shots, just to make sure that wasn’t a mis-label.

  • nyazgirl

Lady Mary looks amazeballs, just wish it were in a bolder color like that awesome lip she’s got going on.

    Enid looks bat-shit crazy

Mrs. Huges looks like a chaperone at a alzheimer’s community danc (But jesus, who wouldn’t want to forget those SHOES!)

Anna looks like she’s going to a middle school Sadie Hawkins mixer

Poor sweet Daisy got eaten by a flower-skinned python.

    I can’t.

  • MilaXX

Not loving Michelle’s look. It’s just bland. I like the piano dress on middle sister Laura. I think the messy hair keeps it from tipping over into twee-ville. Phyliis looks lovely. That’s a great color on her. I’ll even forgive the ugly shoe. Joanne FTW. I love everything about her look.Sadly Sophie’s dress verges close to sister wife territory.

    • Little_Olive

I was on the fence re. Lady Mary’s outfit because of the blandness you point out -it’s mostly that undecided beige-, but the ugly closure on those shorts seals the no.

  • Scimommy

Michelle D. is forever a ‘not quite’ to me. So sad, as she is so, so gorgeous. Laura C. looks totes adorbs. Love that dress! And yes, Joanne F. would have killed it if not for the hair.

  • Jamie M.

Good job, Edith! Tired of taking the back seat, I see.

    • Darren Nesbitt

      Edith is gorgeous!

  • JauntyJohn

Michelle: Lovely hair and make-up, straddles the line nicely between chic and pretty. Hate the jacket. Great gams, well shown off.
Laura: They keyboard motif is dangerously close to twee, but she is definitely pulling it off. Above the neck styling is A+.
Joanne: I’m sorry, but no matter how great that dress is, I can’t pull my eyes away from that shitty hair. Sorry.
Sophie: omg, SO close. Either a higher hemline (NOT a bath towel hem, but above the knee) or sleeveless might have done a lot for this dress.

    • Lilak

      Check, check, check, and check.

Joanne’s hair and makeup are always her downfall, aren’t they? (Gah … such potential!) They always pull me away from her otherwise fresh modern taste into Worlds Colliding territory: from the neck up and from the neck down in two different eras; that brassy shade of blonde that former-Soviet ice dancers used to favor before they had money; and (for some reason) the Kenny Rogers Broaster episode of ‘Seinfeld.’

  • smh4748

I’m so sad whenever I see “Lady Mary” photos from a modern event, because she just looks much better in costume. I don’t know if it’s trying too hard or what, but I can’t remember ever really loving something she was wearing.

I don’t like Laura’s dress much, but I think her hair and makeup look great. In the group photo, I wasn’t sure who she was–I thought maybe she was a new character!

I like the color of Phyllis’ dress, but I think the hemline catches her at an unflattering place. I understand she’s a mature woman and doesn’t need to show a mile of leg, but hitching it up an inch or two to right below the knee would be a little more flattering and not inappropriate.

Sophie looks great! You’d never guess she was hiding that under her costume–it must be quite a bummer to have to dress so plainly in every single episode. Her waistline is unbelievable. I actually like the dress–I agree it’s not the most youthful print, but somehow, I still think it works.

    • tb

I have Phyllis Logan’s dress in blues and greens, and I removed all that extra old lady flower detail at the top and it looks MUCH better. I feel all fancy now.

  • neonseattle

i’m always shocked to see them in regular clothes. i can’t believe how tiny daisy’s waist is!

  • Tracy_Flick

Sohpie looks like a real doll in that last pic.

  • Heather

I get that these are ‘real’ actresses and don’t get free clothes thrown at them, but these are still kinda scary (esp Mrs. Hughes).

    • Imasewsure

That explains a lot about how dull and “not quite” these looks are…

      • Heather

Indeed, but I have nicer/more flattering stuff than most of this hanging in my closet, that I bought for myself.

  • Shawn EH

Laura Carmichael is so ready to intone “Acting!” with a grand flourish, regarding Lady E.

  • Jaime

Based on the general outline, I’m pretty sure that while Daisy’s got a naturally small waist, she must be corseted within an inch of her life under that dress!

    • Isabel

      Or, it could be real!

  • Imasewsure

Wow you guys are too nice. This is still frumpy town

    • Imasewsure

Agreed… I don’t watch the show though so I guess that’s where all of the extra points come from… frumpy town indeed – looks like a dressy party at a slightly fancy school’s teachers lounge to me

  • I love Froggatt’s skirt – if I wore skirts at all (hate skirts/dresses), I’d totally wear that. Love the print.

  • flamingoNW

Really do not like Michelle Dockery’s outfit. Hate the colors hate the hair. Might like the shoes in a different context. I like the rest.

  • Tanya Wade

I would kill for Sophie’s waist, but Lady Edith wins this one for me.

    • omg_dora

I know, right? If I had a tiny waist and round hips I’d wear my skirts this tight all day, every day. Breathing would just not be a priority.

      • Amber J

as someone with a tiny waist and round hips, I wish I could find a skirt that could fit me that well. I could find pencil skirts a few years ago easily, but now everything seems to be cut absolutely straight with no allowance for curves. Finding a skirt that fits both hips and waist is impossible, so I’d have to buy 2-3 sizes up and get the waist taken in..and that gets expensive. I just need to learn how to do my own tailoring.

        • omg_dora

I know! RTW skirts usually too straight for ME and I don’t have a very defined waist at all. But I sew most of my clothes these days so I’m free to fantasize about my dream figure without having to consider ease of shopping 🙂

  • CommentsByKatie

Mary Crawley is killing it and the rest of them are forgettable.

  • homespunner

Joanne’s silhouette looks…weird. I had no idea that was Daisy. There’s a beautiful woman trying to get out from under that awful hairdo and makeup.

    • Tatiana Luján

I’m trying to picture her with a modern and flattering haircut. I can’t.

  • decormaven

Froggatt and Dockery are clearly the only ones getting designer duds thrown at them. All the rest of the fair ladies are left to shop ready to wear. Come on, showrunners, get the PR team hustling for loaners for all these women.

  • Tatiana Luján

    Laura Carmichael for the win!
They all look beautiful, some more than others, and even with their wrong lipsticks, prints, lenghts, hairstyles and shoes, you can tell that they made the effort to look good and the must have looked lovely in person.

  • marlie

Lady Mary – Love it. A serious “hit” for her.
    Lady Edith – Too cutesy.
Mrs. Hughes – Not a fan. It looks like the dress I wore to my 8th grade graduation.
Anna – Really cute look! Can you please hand over that skirt? Kthxbai.
    Daisy… AH-MAZING figure!

  • sekushinonyanko

Sophie is rocking some “Joan Holloway at the Easter Picnic” realness. Yowza at that bod. It totally makes me forgive the pattern.

  • Little_Olive

Joanne has is wearing Rachel Zoe 2010 hair. It’s not pretty.

  • nannypoo

I have always thought that Edith is the prettiest of the sisters. She looks really beautiful here despite being dressed as a piano.

  • Cousin_Rose

    I like Edith best :))

  • They all look great. It’s funny, this show is so easy to get absorbed into (in no small part because it is commercial free on PBS) that it’s still a bit shocking when we see the actors walking around out of their Edwardian drag, looking like their contemporary selves.

  • Anniebet

Love them all, but Joanne definitely stands out. Laura is adorbs, Michelle, cool and needs a new hairdo. The print on Phyllis’s dress is lovely, her shoes are hiddy. And our favorite Daisy needs different makeup, for sure.

  • Pudgy Possum

I never would’ve guessed Carmichael was that beautiful! Crazy!

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I NEED that piano dress. NEED.

  • e jerry powell

Piano dress is kind of shapeless.

  • jilly_d

Laura, no. that dress looks like something I would have worn to a 10th grade vocal jazz contest. Joanna FTW!

  • MemHey

Anyone else see Lederhosen in Lady Mary’s ensemble?

    • Amber J

      cannot unsee it now.

  • Qitkat

Seeing these gals in modern dress really shows how much of a difference makeup and costuming can make. I had to look up Phyllis Logan to see which part she plays. Worlds away from Mrs. Hughes, as is Sophie McShera from Daisy.

  • frannyprof

    LOVE Sophie’s dress!

  • boweryboy

Why is Laura Carmichael wearing a DoodleBop dress?

  • PeaceBang

Oh, British women. Oh, British women. I say this with great admiration for your talent: You all look terrible.

  • Kate

Daisy’s outfit, smile, stance all make her look like a 1950’s housewife barbie

  • smallgirlsaretrouble

Joanne Froggatt is giving me Natalie Dormer vibes here

  • kathrineb

Laura Carmichael is SO stunning and I love the outfit!
