It’s cute, but I don’t think retro, at least styled like this, is her bag. She’s very fresh and modern, and this is decidedly not. Ship this look on over to Kiernan Shipka and break out something neon.

    • jen_vasm

Adele will not be pleased that Lily (or the Glamour UK stylists) totally hijacked her look.

Her little fashion pole dance has sold me. Sold me, I tell ya. I will go see her YA movie and pray at my newly constructed Lily Collins fashion icon alter. I hope she can act as well as she wears clothes.

    • marlie

I’m right there with you. I tried to read the book and I wasn’t impressed (YA fantasy novels are my secret addiction), but I’ll go see this movie anyway, because she sold me on it.

      • Cali Sherwood

I don’t blame you for not being impressed. The author made a name for herself (eventually leading to a book deal) by plagiarizing published books in her fanfiction and being a huge internet bully, and not by her actual writing talents.

        • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com Kristel

It’s interesting that that whole opps plagiarism “it was a game I was playing with my friends, except for those long passages I stole because I didn’t think anyone would recognize it and even though I’ve written several hundred thousand words of this story I still don’t trust my ability to get it right” thing never gets mentioned – that’s the thing I’ll always associate with her name. (But I must just be jealous, obvs.) (Seriously, though, I just went and checked her Wikipedia entry and it’s not even mentioned in passing! I think it rates a mention, at a minimum.)

          • Cali Sherwood

Her legal team tries to remove all accusations of plagiarism when mentioned as Mortal Instruments essentially is one of her plagiarized fanfics with names changed (which may be also why that series is underwhelming, she wrote the fics 10 years ago), though they never refute her internet bullying. Which was quite horrible.

Normally I’m really excited when someone gets their start in fandom (for example, Marissa Meyer was a well know Sailor Moon fanfiction writer before publishing Cinder), but I have a hard time rooting for CC as she’s never taken responsibility or apologized for her actions. : I have a feeling she thought people would just forget about what she has done.

I hope this gives a big push for the actors in the film, though!

          • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com Kristel

Is Mortal Instruments are rewrite of the Draco Trilogy or something? (I’ve never read any of her original fiction and only skimmed parts of her fanfiction back in the day – I remember the Draco Trilogy as taking an excruciatingly long time to say not much of anything. I didn’t make it too far in, though. It got old pretty fast.)

Yeah, it’s pretty great for Lily Collins, at any rate. (I have no idea who else is in it because I get most of my pop culture who’s who from here, and she’s the only one who seems to get featured!)

          • semirose

Yup Draco Trilogy. I hear you, I got through the first one and half the second before being like nope, can’t slog through this anymore. Of course I was all of 13 at the time. Gosh all that CC drama, wasn’t there a thing where she asked people to donate money to her for something that turned out to be a lie? Even so I love Lily Collins and I know movie adaptations sometimes take a lot of liberties so maybe I’ll go see it. Maybe.

Yeah I wish fic wasn’t associated with those two. If it was like Naomi Novik I’m sure the out look would be more positive (well, if people can be nonjudgemental about the slash and porn) since both her original and fan work are really well written.

          • Ashley Ellen Wilson

I don’t know ANYTHING about this series or author, but your mention of Naomi Novik caught my eye, as I’m a HUGE Temeraire fan. Could you please elaborate a bit? Was she originally a fanfic author? For what? What’s her drama? Please and thank you :)

          • semirose

Oh so many fandoms, she goes by astolat and is still super involved with fandom (she helps run Yuletide and is very involved with AO3). I first started reading her SGA work but its all pretty fab.

          • duckgirlie

I can’t stand CC or the Mortal Instruments, but it’s really not the Draco trilogy with the names changed. Some of the individual scenes are similar, and there are some back story elements that get re-used, but the plot itself is completely new.

          • http://the-afterimage.blogspot.com/ lae

Totally agree…there are so many great fanfic authors out there from so many different fandoms with incredible skills and I wish CC and the 50 Shades of Grey person weren’t the only ones associated with the fanfiction-turned-original-author story in the media ):

    I don’t understand placing a red dress against a slightly-less red background.

    • SugarSnap108

I don’t understand having a Pepto-colored cover at all. But yes, in this case it’s especially perplexing.

      • mlle

It reads as a holiday cover to me.

  • Karen Belgrad

Are we sure they didn’t release their Valentine’s Day cover a few months early?

    • Heather

      Valentines, or Christmas.

  • Danielle

    So much red. My eyes!

  • filmcricket

She should wear this kind of make-up more often. The heavy brows with the heavy red lips she’s been sporting lately is just soooo much for her wee little face; I feel like someone thinks she’s Salma Hayek or Penelope Cruz when she’s not. This is much fresher and younger. Love the hair, too.

  • formerlyAnon

Do not think that hair style is flattering – her face looks too small to me.

  • MilaXX

Very cute. Reminds me of Marlo Thomas circa “That Girl”.

  • OrigamiRose

I’m just so relieved she wasn’t wearing the Gucci dress.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

      word.

  • http://piblet.tumblr.com/ Anastasia

This is very Trudy-Campbell-esque — and while I’m always a fan of Janie Bryant’s amazing picks for Miss Brie, this look ages Miss Collins.

    • charlotte

      That’s what I thought. Full-on Trudy.

  • marlie

She’s been knocking it out of the park lately. I love this cover – she looks fabulous!

My only criticism… it seems a tad bit “holiday.” Otherwise, lovely!

  • gabbilevy

Oh yes, Lily. Audrey, not Audrey-bot, is your wheelhouse.

    •  Cαrlσs Quiñσnes ♐

Oh yes.. she has that sparkly playfulness that Audrey used to have..

  • AlisonS

Did I miss the rest of August along with September, October, and November? Because that cover is pure December Holiday.

  • teensmom99

    Love it–better than the model.

  • decormaven

No jewelry? Red dress against a red background? Was there a stylist present? There’s more to it than slapping a couture dress on the cover, you know. No infraction ruled for Ms. Collins; she continues to lead the style pack.

  • Crystal

She is really attractive. And I love that hair.

  • CommentsByKatie

    Trudy Campbell Realness.

  • Monabel

That dress doesn’t fit either woman in the upper chest.

    • quiltrx

It’s like it was supposed to be doing *something* design-wise in that area, but they didn’t quite go for it enough to look intentional. So it just looks ill-fitting.

  • oatmealpie

Put tights on her and she could be Zoe 2.

  • DuBey2

This D&G dress is getting lots of press. Its also featured in the new (but not on the cover) InStyle issue, and looks great there.

    • DuBey2

Oh, and I personally like her with the big hair.

  • guest2visits

Cute dress but the background is awful for it. For a minute it looked like an old issue of Ladies Home Journal.

  • MaggieMae

Lily is knocking it out of the park.
