Ciara in Zara in New York City

Posted on August 22, 2013

We’re not as angry about sheer garments and visible undergarments as some of our Bitter Kittens. There are ways to do it right, as far as we’re concerned. Granted, very, very, very few celebs ever really get it right, but bless them, they keep trying.

Ciara leaves NBC Studios in New York City in a Zara top and skirt.

It’s a shame, because she looks really pretty here and we like the whole outfit (could’ve used better shoes, though). But that sheer panel in the middle is way too distracting – and not very flattering, actually. We’re kinda distracted by the sheer part of the skirt, too. It’s like random panels in the outfit are sheer for no good reason. This could’ve been a really gorgeous look on her (and we’re sure the lady-oriented don’t mind the peeks), but there’s an odd hint of desperation to it.

I agree. I love the pattern of the skirt, but the sheer weirdness ruins it. Too bad.

    • Lime

Just realised I have that Zara skirt! But it’s black instead of white. With that beading, it was love at first sight.

  • Probably should have gone with a black bra…? Anywho, this is one of the best I’ve ever seen of Ciara so I’m all for this look. Weird sheer panels and all.

(I love sheer, by the way.)

    • Rhonda Shore

Absolutely with the black bra…with sheer, might as well go over the top and make the whole look more purposeful…and w/a black bra it’s more Irma laDouce-like…

  • Sobaika

Forget the sheer bits. I can’t stop staring at her LEGS.

    • Just Me

Chile, these leg shots were a painful reminder of just how long it has been since I worked out my lower body. Those legs are little baby Tina Turners in the making.

      • kimmeister

They’re a painful reminder that despite the fact that I work out my whole body like crazy, my legs look nothing like that.

        • Just Me

*Bowing my head* You win the “That Bitch Has Got Better Legs Than I Will Ever Have on My BEST Day” Bitten Kitten Award for today.

    • No kidding. And it’s amazing how much better the legs and feet look when the feet aren’t in bigass platform shoes.

  • marlie

I really like this, and I’m not even bothered by the sheerness of the top. The skirt looks like the lining has ridden up a little, rather than it being intentionally sheer. Either way, fix that little mistake, add some metallic shoes or something, and we’d have a pretty fierce look.

  • Chipster

All I can focus on is that Hanes bra she’s wearing.

    • kimmeister

If you’re going to show it, might as well have picked an interesting one, not just a T-shirt bra.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

Agreed. This look could have been uplifted by a better underpinning. That bra is too much like underwear, the kind of underwear you aren’t supposed to see.

  • MoHub

The sheer stuff bothers me less than the fact that the skirt seems to have been made from a chenille bedspread in a PR unconventional materials challenge, such as the opening challenge in season 3.

    • 3boysful

I think they’re actually beads, so just imagine how uncomfortable that skirt would be to sit in!

  • sugarkane105

I think she looks gorgeous. Chic, even. I don’t mind the peekaboo bits.

  • kimmeister

How many rings does she have on, 57?

  • Nicholas

If this upsets anyone, I’ll advise you to skip the upcoming TLo post on the Naya Rivera photoshoot by none other than our very own Terry Richardson.

    • Thanks for the warning. But now I am intrigued and can’t look away!

  • Sheer doesn’t bother me either, I’ve reached the point of acceptance. Ciara tops my list of Lady Crushes, and I love seeing her here in a great idea of an outfit. But I’m not wholly sold on this one. I hope she keeps making efforts like this though and gets more face time here.

    • decormaven

Yes, I’m pulling for her to get an A+ stylist. This gal could really pull off some looks, with just the most minor corrections.

    • demidaemon

I’m impressed by your acceptance. I refuse to become immune to its problems, though. Improper uses of sheer must die, and it needs to be phased out so that we can maybe appreciate it again.

      • I associate sheer with the 80s and by now, just a form of dressing. Now ILLUSION netting on the other hand….that shall never be accepted.

  • Jen

Maybe in her closet lighting it didn’t look sheer and this was an accident…..

  • hughman

I’m all about Sassy Limo Driver in the last pic. “OH GURL, YOU IS WERQING SHEER. ALL THE SINGLE LADIES!”

    • kimmeister

Meanwhile, someone behind her is wearing a red Wilma dress in the middle of the day. Is that common in NYC?

      • hughman

Well they are at 30 Rock.

      • Not to single you both out, but this is a perfect example of why we ask people not to comment on the civilians in the background. First comment is a relatively harmless joke, followed by a second comment that opens up the topic a little more while at the same time sounding vaguely critical. Within 5 comments, someone will start criticizing the outfits of passersby and after that, it’s only a matter of time before a totally uninvolved bystander has strangers on the internet discussing the whiteness of her teeth or whether or not her skirt is flattering.

        It. Always. Happens.

We know neither of you meant anything by it and we normally just delete this kind of stuff, but it’s been happening so much lately that we had to address.

To all the Bitter Kittens: please do not comment on civilians or passersby in any of the photos we post, even if you’re saying something complimentary, because, this being the internet, someone is going to disagree with you eventually, leading to “Really? You like that girl’s dress? I think it’s kind of ugly.”

        • Monzerrat Ontiveros

Got it: No star no joke

        • hughman

Thanks for the heads up. I was unaware of this request!

          • kimmeister

            Same here. Noted!

    • bellafigura1

I think it’s not cool to assume he speaks that way, just sayin’.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

The girl in the red pants who’s giving that look stink-eye is just the best part of my day.

  • Imasewsure

This is gorgeous on her (but I’m imagining a sexy cami underneath which would have fixed a lot of the problems here). Too bad.

    • ballerinawithagun

You are so right, a sexy cami would have been perfect!

  • TonyGo

Y’all can have Gaga’s Hot Ginger Handler, I’ll take Hot Daddy Bear Handler, please and thank you.

  • Sara__B

Such a beautiful woman. It’s a shame her bra pulls the focus from her lovely face, hair, legs, and dress.

  • sagecreek

Wouldn’t it hurt to sit down in that skirt?

    • Might be like one of those massage car-seat covers taxi drivers sometimes have? Acupressure for the arse.

  • Rand Ortega

See that little girl in the red pants? My sentiments exactly.

  • neonseattle

sooo pretty. it’s a shame about the sheer parts.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

I would love to see JLO in this… I bet that she would make this work!

  • tb

(Off Topic) PLEASE, TLO, please get the Lounge ready. I need a drink STAT. (STAT is what one of our managers here JUST learned! “Hey! You! I need that drawing on my desk STAT! ” “This figure needs to be finished by tomorrow STAT””Hey go get my coffee STAT on your way to the light table” I just blink ….**crickets**…….**crickets**…..with statily statness. I need the lounge…i need the lounge…

  • JaCory Deon

She looks quite pretty here but the peek-a-boo bra is the wrong note for me. Still whoever paints this chick now is earning their check because it’s always right.

  • nannypoo

A very beautiful outfit that needs a lining.

    • conniemd

This totally. I am in love with the beautiful beading and glamour of the outfit.

  • Jessica Freeman

I am not so sure that the sheer top is what bothers me as much as her shiny bra. It’s distracting, she should have gone with a matte bra and it would have been an improvement. The bead work is really pretty, but I don’t think it serves the work for it to be sheer.

    • poggi

I think you’re right. Even the shape of the bra is really distracting in this fabric. A more subtle bra in texture and shape may not have looked so obvious through the shirt and really wouldn’t become the focus of attention..

  • JauntyJohn

I feel like Superboy when he was learning to control his X-Ray vision and would look through random things.

The color is total luxe on her, and at least the undergarments are a coordinating color so it’s a more subtle, and therefore more interesting, effect.

  • James Wurm

I always wonder if its the camera flash that’s the downfall of these garments. That in normal to bright light, they look thin, yet generally opaque, but once that flash pops, its bra city

  • Janet B

If you are going to wear a sheer dress, don’t wear boring undergarments.

  • I love the texture of both the skirt and the blouse, and Ciara is so beautiful. I hate to see her wear clothes that you can see through. It is possible that the clothes looked different to her in the house. I recently left the house in shoes that didn’t match. :-/

  • NoveltyRocker

Staring straight into the camera with every single step into her car—she is breaking a fourth wall I didn’t realize existed with paparazzi photos. Seeing that bra is about as sexy as seeing them hanging in target. When they’re all functional, and not some kind of arty piece on their own, they should just not be seen under or peeking from clothing, looks like a damn mistake.

  • alyce1213

Scrolling down, my first thought was “It’s a shame . . .” because the visible underwear detracts from the exquisite beading and fabric. A very sheer, fitted slip would’ve been better.

  • stubbornthoughts

She looks so beautiful here, but she also looks completely aloof to the fact that we can see her bra.

  • Trisha26

This looks like her stylist didn’t do a lighting check. Not sure Ciara knows how sheer it is.

  • Dan_In_NYC

I would be in love with this look – minus the sheer stuff. She has the skin tone to pull this off. Some of porcelain skinned favorites might want to, but would look completely monochromatic if they tried. I’m giving this an ALMOST.

  • elemspbee

Actually, the outfit is quite nice on her. I don’t find the sheer panel offensively distracting. it’s the face is doing, or attempting to do, on the first three pix that distracted me. She’s gorgeous, perfect face, but she doesn’t seem to know what to do with it. Though, she doesn’t have to do anything!

  • MilaXX

Well her hit single is called Body Party. Just sayin’

  • Jacob Bowen

I think the skirt is BEAUTIFUL, but combined with the top makes it too old-lady (well…slutty old lady). It is just too baggy and gives her a faux-fupa.

  • AllegraS

Have these people never heard the words “camisole with a bra in natural shade” There are some fabulous Modal ones all over the place, but I guess the stylists never got what camisole means. Sheer is a wonderful naughty bit but I believe what we leave to the imagination is always more beautiful than what we see – or show.

  • MissFern

If you’re going to show your bra, make sure it’s a cute bra.

  • dschubba

“Hint of desperation” might as well be Ciara’s last name.

  • demidaemon

At least she’s wearing a proper bra. That’s all I’ve got.

  • shelley514

Why does Ciara always look so stiff though? Is it maybe her wigs? She puts a stiff wig on the top of her head and the stiffness just radiates downward and through her entire body.

  • Holy smokes, is she ever fit
