Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman on the Set of “Sherlock”

Posted on August 29, 2013

Here you go, Fanbois/Fangurls.

Benedict Cumberbatch (and Martin Freeman) films scenes for season 3 of “Sherlock” at a New York Pizza Diner in London.

Why he doesn’t just wear his hair exactly like that all the time eludes us. Sure, he wants to not be associated with the role all the time and most men don’t really want the hassle of maintaining a hair color, but he never, ever looks “right” with his natural blond and he never looks as good as he does when he’s sporting curls of some length. And long, curly hair on a guy is not something T Lo normally advocate for.

It’s early morning and we’re both suddenly dying for a slice.

I don’t like this curly hairstyle on him… In fact, he is kinda meh to me LOL 😛

    • Getoverit

This is not nice, but he looks like a serial killer to me. Not that I have seen one up close, but what I imagine one looks like. The kind of look where if I was alone on an elevator with him I would promptly exit. I think it is the longer hair.

      • Diego!

hahahahaa You should dial *91 and as soon as he stares or says something to you, dial the following 1 and let the Police listen to his voice 😛

    • Toto Maya

Someone once said he looks like the halfway point of an Animorph changing into something else. I thought that was hilarious.

      • Diego!

        Hahaha you made me laugh!

  • Judy_S

Not blond–not since he was a little kid, except when playing blondies like Julian Assange. The natural color is auburn, probably pretty dark.
He seems to have become resigned to the curls. He wore this look during a whole series of public appearances over the summer (Top Gear, Japanese promotion of Star Trek into Darkness). However, I think his next role is Alan Turing and the curls will presumably be gone.

    • WendyD

He had to keep the curls because shooting of Series 3 of Sherlock was split into two parts and he had to come back and finish it. His Top Gear curls were GLORIOUS as his hair was even longer and getting some of its natural auburn back. The hair stylist on Sherlock is on Twitter and has said he’ll be cutting his hair soon after they’re finished for his next role. (Yes, I know WAY too much about Benedict’s hair.)

      • Judy_S

Right, but at the STiD premiere he had the long hair slicked back into a sort of messy pompadour. Up to this summer he has seemed to feel that public appearances required a more formal-looking hairstyle–trying to shove the Sherlock hair into a more “normal” shape, off his face. Now he seems to realize that if his hair is long for a role, curls are the way to go. (A fellow hair-watcher.)

        • Bethany NS

Ok, I can’t believe I just created an account to ask this, but what’s the twitter handle for the stylist? I too love the curls.

          • WendyD

            She’s Claire_cpj

          • Bethany NS

            Thank you!

  • marlie

I’ve never been a crazy BC fangurl (though I think he’s incredibly talented and his voice is enough to make my panties drop), but I agree that the dark hair and curls is the best look for him.

    • Aurumgirl

It’s probably because curls are really hard work to maintain. They don’t naturally look the way they do on him without a lot of coaxing and product and shaping and time. And for this role, his hair has to be dyed, too. It’s way easier to just straighten the hair for a one time appearance, even though that takes time too.

    • NinaBoo

He does a voice over for a car commercial and the way he pronounces “Jaguar” and “aluminium”…*swoon*

      • oekmama

        link please!!

        • NinaBoo

Or Google Benedict Cumberbatch Jaguar ad

  • leahpapa

My husband has been craving a coat like that since we started watching the show. I’m apt to hunt one down for him – it is glorious.

  • RussellH88

The Sherlock hair detracts from his otter-ness.

I cannot wait for that show to come back.

  • MilaXX

I didn’t hate his Star Trek haircut, but the color was a bit harsh. If he’s gonna blow out the hair, he needs a shorter cut.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

I wouldn’t consider myself a Cumberbitch, but I do think he looks best with dark curls. He’s another one that I don’t think is traditionally good looking, but something about him makes him very attractive. Not sure if that makes any sense but…

    • Just Me

He’s sexy, rather than traditionally attractive. The intelligence and the voice go a long, long way towards explaining his appeal to me personally. I would covet an evening talking to him about anything he pleases as long as he does a good deal of the talking. I would bring my “A” game and keep my long sighs of contentment on the inside.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

Hahaha good call. And I hate to admit this here (don’t kill me, BKs…) but the only thing I’ve ever seen him in is one interview on the Graham Norton show (the episode with him and Chris Pine) and you’re right, he was really sexy. The perfect combination of humility and humor. 🙂 I should add Sherlock to my queue.

        • majorbedhead

Oh, you really should. It’s so well done. Tense, well-paced, and holds your interest from the get go.

        • Qitkat

There’s just something about the Graham Norton show that brings out the funniest, more authentic sides of people. I’m not much of a chat show watcher except for occasional looks at the Jimmy’s, as Johnny Carson was and is the man for me, but GN is just so British, so uncensored, I just love him.

          • Goldie

I think it might be the fact that the Graham Norton Show serves alcohol to the guests, lol.

      • WendyD

Totally with you, I’d love to share a pint and just chat. We’re the same age and the topics he brings up in interviews are completely things that I talk with friends about and to discuss them with someone with THAT VOICE, yeah, I’d like that.

      • Carla_Charlton

And he’s been quite good in all the roles in which I’ve seen him, which also adds to the appeal as far as I’m concerned. As for his hair, I think his natural dark auburn is completely fine, in terms of flattering him. Style-wise, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen his natural hair not slicked back and so have no idea what it looks like otherwise.

      • fursa_saida

I find him sexy as Sherlock, but not really the rest of the time. I do think he’s ridiculously talented, though.

  • Beardslee

Embrace the curls, Benedict! They are your crowning glory.

  • WendyD

What are you trying to do to me?! I need to be a productive member of society and you’re giving me CurlyBatch?!
Dear Lord! I love Benedict in all his hair incarnations, but the Sherlock hair is simply perfection.
It takes a lot of time to get it perfect like this. “Twist and diffuse” is what the set hair stylist calls it. So I understand why he doesn’t necessarily want to deal with it all the time. But the color, oh the color.
And yes, AuburnBatch is his natural state.
Excuse me while I go curl up for awhile try to calm down.

  • misstressofsylar

I’ve read sonewhere he hates the curls..has Moffat and Gatiss published an actual date yet for Season 3? my friends and i were in agreement that aside from the busy scheds of their leads, they probably got pressured with all the theories about how he survived the fall and had to come up with a really clever positiob..oh well, there’s The Hobbit anyway for thos dying for a reunion of these 2..officially shipping Smaug and Bilbo 😀

    • Tina Power

Season 3 is allegedly debuting on January 1st, 2014. Allegedly.

  • Dan_In_NYC

He’s one of those where – I get it, I can see why people would go gaga for him. But he just doesn’t do it for me personally. And I actually feel the same way about Clooney.

  • BarniClaw

Benedict who? I loves me some Martin Freeman.

    • marlie

I didn’t really know who MF was until I saw “The World’s End” this weekend, and he was really funny in it.

      • BarniClaw

Oh, hooray! That’s on my list to see, and I had no idea he was in it. He pretty much ruined the American version of The Office for me for years.

      • random_poster

I’m raising my hand as a major fangirl, here. He started catching my eye in anything I’ve seen him in where he wasn’t the main character…”What’s Your Number?”, “Love, Actually”. I love this guy, and squealed when I found out that he and Simon Pegg are in a film together.

        • keall

Even better than that: they’ve been in three films together, actually. MF was in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” too. Not that I, like, obsess over everything Simon Pegg and Martin Freeman do, or anything.

      • MartyBellerMask

He was in the original “The Office”, the British Jim, basically. (Or the basis for Jim would be more accurate.) And of course “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.” 🙂

      • julnyes

You should watch his back catalog – he has been in a ton of quality programming (except Hardware – skip that because it is awful) like Love, Actually, The Office (UK version), Sherlock, The Hobbit, Nativity!, Wild Target … I could go on. He is fantastic.

        • formerlyAnon

I have to be honest. The Hobbit ruined him for me for a while. I’m over it now, though.

    • MartyBellerMask

Such a cutie pie and very talented.

    • Tatiana Luján

I Love Martin Freeman. So cute, so funny.

    • julnyes

I adore Benedict, but my crush on Martin Freeman dates back to The Office and I will watch him in anything.

    • MaggieMae

      Team Freeman! Team Freeman!

    • Akemi

THIS! He was SO awesome in The Office, and he is always so funny in interviews and such.

  • H2olovngrl

What a great way to start the day. First , George and Sandy, and now a little Sherlock and Watson! It’s gonna be a fun one today! If you are planning.on serving.up some of the rest of my favorites, I.will take some Bomer, Hiddleston, The Swinton and of course, Queen Helen, thankyouverymuch !

    • marlie

And maybe some Cate, if she’s available.

  • BuffaloBarbara

He does look better with the curls.

Anyway, they’re filming! I’d be happier to hear it was already filmed and in editing, but I’ll take it. I’m jonesing for some Sherlock.

    • gabbilevy

Pretty sure this is for the third episode– the first two episodes of the series are supposedly already in the can. (I recently went on a rewatch binge and my Sherlock anxiety levels skyrocketed)

  • Rand Ortega

He’s just so Lord Byron hot. He makes me wish they’d remake “Gothic”.

  • stu844

When I first saw this I thought, “Wait! Is it Sausage Friday?!” I was really happy for three seconds…

    • julnyes

They should throw in some shots of Gatiss looking dapper as Mycroft and silver fox Rupert Graves as well. This show really is a motherlode.

      • formerlyAnon

Rupert Graves *shouldn’t* be in my wheelhouse, and yet he is. There’s something about his eyes . . .

      • formerlyAnon

Also, add Vinette Robinson (plays Sally Donovan) to the motherlode of attractive. I could watch her all day and I like her voice, too. (ETA: I know she’s neglected because her character is unsympathetic. But it’s a shame.)

        • julnyes

We haven’t even touched on the lovely ladies of Sherlock – Una Stubbs (check out pictures of her from the 60’s though she is lovely now as well) , Louise Brealey is adorable, Vinette Robinson has gorgeous skin and of course THE WOMAN played by Lara Pulver.

As an aside, why don’t any of the Sherlock Holmes adaptations get Irene Adler anywhere close to canon? I think that character gets changed the most out of any of them.

          • formerlyAnon

True, though Lara Pulver is too pretty for me to appreciate.

And nobody gets Adler close to canon because 1) in canon she’s smart but otherwise her character is totally predicated on her relationships to men (i.e., her former lover & her imminent husband.) Not much there I *want* to see exploited; and 2) if they want to splash out on a girl character with an “interesting” subplot, she’s about it for memorable females in canon. Watson’s women are barely ghost figures. (Though one day I do want to see Mrs. Hudson written as secret mastermind of some kind.)

          • julnyes

I see your point, but I would like an Irene Adler who isn’t sexually interested in Sherlock for once.

          • formerlyAnon

I’d agree with that. Seems to be beyond the imagination of whoever’s making these decisions, though.

        • Tatiana Luján

She is hot. Everyone in that show is hot, but at the same time looks real, like people (hot and gorgeous people) you could find on the street.
Well, everyone but Anderson and the cabbie.

      • I adore Gatiss, I want to have tea with him and chat about horror films all day. #nerddreams

        • julnyes

In my #nerddreams he gives me a tour of his Victorian laboratory and then we would drink copious amounts of liquor while conducting mad experiments a la Frankenstein.

        • Tatiana Luján

I would talk about The Doctor with him. Well, that and any other subject he wants to talk about, I’ll just nod in approval.

  • sk888888

I, for one, am MORE than ready for Season 3! Bring it!

  • Oh it’s lovely Benedict! I don’t really care about his hair that much, although, if I had to choose, I’d go for either the Top Gear hair or his natural auburn curls…or the Star Trek messy, after-fighting-the-Klingons-hair, or… ok, I’d go for any type of hair. No hair/don’t care! He’s just glorious and a delight to watch in anything! Just wish Sherlock S3 would start already. It’s been 2 years since The Fall Mr Gatiss and Mr Moffat!

    • WendyD

Don’t blame Moffit and Gatiss, it’s because Benedict and Martin are such fantastic actors that they are in high demand and have had such busy schedules working on so many films the past 2 years.

    • julnyes

Shorter than the original fans had to wait after the fall – and they had to protest to get Doyle to bring Sherlock back to life!

  • Jacquelyn

    I love him.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Also, completely agreed that Benedict Cumberbatch and his hair look best when he’s sporting the Sherlock look. When I first saw a picture of him with his blonde hair I was shocked at the bad dye job and thought how much it didn’t suit him. It nearly floored me that it was a picture of him sans-hair dye.

    • julnyes

Are you sure? because he isn’t naturally blond.

      • Jessica O’Connell

Oh really? I’ve seen things in the past that say he is naturally blonde. Now I’m seeing some things say blonde, some auburn.

        • Domo_Konnichiwa

I’ve read that his natural hair color shows in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.”

        • julnyes

You can take a look at pictures of him from when he was younger. He definitely hasn’t been blond since he was a toddler.

    • WendyD

He’s naturally auburn. Trust me. As much as TLo know about celebrity fashion, I know about certain famous individuals’ hair. *cringes that it is true*
He’s blonde when he’s playing Julian Assange in ‘The Fifth Estate’ which is out this fall so there are publicity shots coming out for that right now.

  • Tina Power

From what I’ve read, Benedict doesn’t like his Sherlock hair because he thinks it makes him look feminine. I don’t know if he’s actually said this but that’s what been of it.

  • MartyBellerMask

Yes, that is a great hairstyle and color for him. Martin Freeman’s more my type though. ;-D

  • majorbedhead

First George, now Benedict. And it’s not even Sausage Friday. Yummy.

    • formerlyAnon

Yes. I had a micro second where I wondered if I’d lost a day and it actually WAS Friday.

  • Shawn EH

Totally agreed on the hair. His Sherlock coif is his best.

  • Joe Schmartin

You mean his natural *auburn*, right? 😉

  • Tatiana Luján

Martin Freeman is adorable. He makes the most awful clothing choices, but loves clothes and believes to be a fashionista. And he’s so cute. I wish he was shown more here, in TLo.

    • Denise Plank

Yeah, for me it is all about Martin.

  • formerlyAnon

Two different brands of attractive. Thank-you.

  • Tanya Wade

I know the fanboyz/gurlz will kill me, but I want a Sherlock with Freeman’s Watson and Johnny Lee Miller’s Holmes. Hey, I can dream….

    • formerlyAnon

Don’t know if I qualify as a fangirl but that actually sounds marvelous.

    • julnyes

I would love for the two Watsons to meet – Martin and Lucy on the screen together would make me collapse in joy.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like Benedict’s curls a lot, but I prefer his hair when it is his natural auburn.

  • Erica

We just started watching this a few weeks ago and are now huge fans. I keep promising the husband that a 3rd season is coming–now some visual proof.

If I had known MF of Hitchhiker’s Guide was in it, I would have started watching 2 years ago.

  • julnyes

So happy for the return of this show and to see them doing chat shows will be fantastic. Benedict is a sweetheart and Martin is wonderfully snarky.

The last picture is wonderfully lit. It reminds me of Hopper’s Nighthawks painting.

  • CeeQ

I am so hanging for the return of this show =)

  • haightcolevalley

I must disagree with most of the opinions r.e. the long curls – to me it looks like he’s wearing a mop. SO much better when it’s shorter, loved the Star Trek hair. He looked totally hot.

    • Tatiana Luján

I loved the Star Trek haircut too (the movie haircut, not the poledance haircut)

      • haightcolevalley

  • julnyes

So if these shots are spoilers – does this mean Episode 3 takes place in New York? Which would be funny considering the fact that Elementary is doing an episode in London.

    • WendyD

No, they are shooting at “at a New York Pizza Diner in London”

      • julnyes

ah, I didn’t read the captions.

      • MRT144

I love the mulberry st. sign

  • Apparently, he thinks the curls make him look too feminine. Silly man.

  • AnnPopovic

Benedict as a blonde brings to mind Dennis Quaid, and that’s not a BAD thing to bring to mind, it’s just…Benedict as a brunette brings to mind BENEDICT and that really is just SO much better….

  • Lily-Rygh

Dying for a slice of pizza, or a slice of the Cumber? 🙂

  • Do I want to know how much longer we have to wait, or will it make it worse?

  • Imasewsure

I heart this show so much! Can’t wait

  • I thought he looked best when he was in Frankenstein — curly ginger hair, sideburns. Perfection.

  • Akemi

I only find him attractive as Sherlock.

  • Betsy

You want a slice of pizza because you’re both dieting for NY Fashion Week!

And I ADORE this hairstyle on him. Can’t stand the slicked down version. Makes him look like card shark.

  • not_Bridget

That was a great look. I think his hair was lightened just a bit–more strawberry blonde than his natural auburn.

  • Apple Tree

Woah, TLo about Sherlock! Haven’t looked here since MadMen ended…

  • Anna Roberts

For fuck sake, his natural hair colour is not blond, it’s auburn!

  • Danielle

Someone on Tumblr once said that Benedict Cumberbatch looked like the middle picture on an Animorphs cover and now that’s all I can see.

  • clairellis

I am in live with him and it makes no sense. He shouldn’t be hot and yet he makes me wet just looking at him.

  • JP

Been offline for longer than I find acceptable, and come back to this yummy treat from you boys. Bless you! 😉

  • Alice Teeple

I think I know what it is about him – when Benedict has his natural hair color, he looks like a typical ginger. But when he dyes his hair dark, all of a sudden those severe features feel out of place and kind of exotic; add the sallow cheekbones and you have yourself a very striking profile. I agree he looks better with longer hair, but I’m partial to men with curly hair. What’s fascinating about his face is, it never looks the same- he’s a total chameleon. I barely recognized him in Star Trek because he’d gained about 40 pounds and looked healthy. Also the man is a dreamboat, I’m not going to lie.
