Aubrey Plaza in Peter Pilotto at the 2013 Imagen Awards

Posted on August 19, 2013

There is just way too much dress going on here.

Aubrey Plaza attends the 2013 Imagen Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Peter Pilotto dress paired with Christian Loboutin pumps.

Peter Pilotto Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Tess Hellfeuer

It’s like a fractal dress; it hurts the brain the longer you look at it. We’re trying to come up with something nice to say – like maybe the colors aren’t bad on her? – but we’re far too distracted by far too many elements in one garment. And yet the one thing we can’t stop focusing on is the kind of fucked-up bustline. Go figure.

It’s all bad, Aubrey. Go home and try again. And yell at the person who talked you into this one. Yell harder if they also talked you into those yellow pumps.

    • Kiltdntiltd

Wow, that is one major mess of a dress. Totally ill considered in every respect. Back on the rack it goes. I can’t think of anyone who’s dress it might actually be.

      • kmk05

I just realised why her posing is so awkward! it’s because she’s keeping those black flaps from ‘winging’ out at her sides. And it’s a good thing she did, because the model looks ridiculous. I guess that’s how we know it’s actually no one’s dress.

        • Kiltdntiltd

And atop everything else wrong with that,…thing, the sequin work looks amateurish and stupid.

          • Rhonda Shore

The flaps look like gils or whatever fish have that help them breathe…i don’t think anyone would look good in this dress, not even the model does. And what’s with the yellow shoes? The geometric hair is good though…

            • Monabel

              With you on the hair.

      • neeva

        How about Solange?

        • Kiltdntiltd

I dunno if even the Mighty Solange is up to this “garment”.

          • demidaemon

The only thing that could “wear” this dress is a bonfire or a garbage bag.

    • Alanna

Not only yellow pumps, but yellow pumps that look way too big and uncomfortable.

      • MilaXX

Barbie accessory. What is the fascination with these chalky looking white/pink/yellow pumps? Especially when they pair them with darker colors.

    • Kiltdntiltd

Something nice? Her hair and make up are fine.

      • Sarah

The thumbnail ain’t bad. I think she might’ve looked good in those colors – were the dress not insane, of course.

    • conniemd

Is there any Peter Pilotto dress that doesn’t have too much going on with it? That’s always seemed his signature trademark to me

      • Kiltdntiltd

Really. Just edit out those white panels, and we’re onto something.

        • Targettaste

Yes, those white panels were what killed it for me.

          • demidaemon

I think so much editing is needed on this that it wouldn’t remotely be a PP dress at the end. Which is probably what would be needed. Also “PP” as an acronym and moniker for this designer is entirely appropriate.

    • clatie

Again with this designer. I DON’T UNDERSTAND.

    • mjude

its bad enough it’s monday & then to start off with this. boo hissssssss

    • Karen Belgrad

She skipped the Pinterest nails in favor of an Etsy dress!

    • ashtangajunkie

I’ve yet to see a Peter Pilotto dress that doesn’t hurt my eyes.

    • annabelle archer

Bless the comedic actresses, they struggle the most. She tried, and she should be encouraged, yet I have nothing positive to affirm.

    • Alte Kaker

Oy…When the dress looks awful on the runway model, no mere actress should attempt it…

      • marlie

Especially not an actress without the clothes-wearing cred of someone like Cate, Zoe, or Nicole.

    • jmorino08

The dress is wearing her, not the other way around! That’s a dress you really have to sell. And she’s not even trying.

    • Just Me

scroll down fug. that was painful.

      • homespunner

        Scroll any which way fug.

        • Just Me

The thumbnail wasn’t bad. You really couldn’t see the full bodice and her hair and face were pleasant. And then I opened the post and started to scroll. I got to her waist thinking it could not get worse. And then I saw the skirt thinking well this must be it then. And then I got to the shoes. The experience was like watching a car wreck in slow motion.

    • MoHub

      She as batwings!

      • Ginny Ellsworth

And should have music playing as she walks…nana nana nana nana batwings! Thank you so much for my morning giggle.

    • kmk05

Her hair is so flat! It’s like everything is being sucked into the vortex created at her midsection!

    • Jamie M.

    • marlie

That is one FUGLY dress. Not the way I wanted to start the work week. :P

    • Elizabeth Phillips

The top part of the dress could work if the rest of it were black. And very simple.

    • mlle

I know it’s a tiny nit to pick in a dress so awful that it’s a whole head full of lice, but it’s driving me bats that the bodice is sagging on one side. Did her stylist forget to pack enough fashion tape?

    • giddypony

nothing on this fits, and she knows it.

    • elemspbee

oh my. bust line, arrow cut pointing to her privates, that last photo stance is tragic.

    • cluecat

The dress is an abstract painting. I see sparkly ocean waves….and a tuxedo? Also, front slit? Is this a thing?

    • nannypoo

I think she dresses badly on purpose, like Zosia Mamet, trying to look as bad as possible so her feelings can’t be hurt if people criticize her when she tries to do it right. That way she can’t get hurt, because she already knows it’s bad.

      • MilaXX

nah, she’s just a bit fashion impaired. Her hair and makeup are fine and she occasionally gets it right when she keeps it simple. Someone is trying to dress her beyond her pay grade and it ain’t working.

      • Qitkat

Zosia Mamet would never come near this dress. I think someone convince Aubrey that she could wear a quirky designer dress without considering she is much shorter than the model, and that the alterations would ruin the lines.

        • demidaemon

To be fair, I don’t think this is anyone’s dress. I’m guessing her stylist thought “any PR is good PR” and shoved her into it. Because this is a worst dressed list dress.

    • MilaXX

The closer the picture got, the uglier the look. Word to lady stars, if it’s ugly on the model, you don’t stand a chance.

    • Gaby

Reminds me of those silly slip-cover “garments” for wine bottles; this one is like a sequined lounge singer tux.

    • crash1212

That is one ugly dress on a really cute, talented woman. Burn it, ditch the shoes – keep the make-up and hair.

    • SugarSnap108

Could she possibly look more uncomfortable? And I don’t blame her … Well, I blame her for agreeing to this.

    • MaggieMae

Peter Pilotto? Too much? Naw…. (OF COURSE it’s too much!)

    • Laurie Landry

The white things on the abdomen are really odd and the shoes are just horrible.

    • mhleta

I could forgive the awkward top if she’d worn it with a black pencil skirt. It’s the bottom of this dress that I find completely heinous.

      • conniemd

I think that’s true of a lot of bold printed separates. Both top and bottom are too much and paired separately with a plain color (often black) they would look less eye scrambling. (I use the term “print” loosely to describe this outfit)

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

Peter Pilotto needs a 12-step program. He can’t seem to help himself, throws everything he thinks of on a garment.

    • Monzerrat Ontiveros

I love it, and her face and hair look awesome

    • Stella Zawistowski

All I see is the giant superhero mask around her waist.

    • kimmeister

Her boobs are one deep breath away from popping out of that weird bodice.

    • Carrieanno

I wish I hadn’t moved on from the Eddie Redmayne post.

    • Pudgy Possum

Her hair and make up are nice, though!

    • imakeart

Agree that none of it works. And I get that the shoes are borrowed, but the things must be 3 sizes too big for her.

    • Aurumgirl

      Dear Aubrey,

Fire everyone associated with this “dress”. Every one.

    • Jaeda Laurez

So much ugly contained in one outfit. And then the pumps. And she’s smushing the sides of the dress with her arms. No bueno.

    • bertkeeter

      “TORTURED” is the new black!

    • CatherineRhodes

      Project Runway bottom third.

    • Valdri8

PR pet store challenge – the team chose the aquarium backdrop

    • Qitkat

I think this dress might have looked fabulous on the hanger, which is why it was probably chosen. It fits well on the model, with her height, showing off all the different elements properly, as they were designed to be shown. But someone has poorly altered this to fit Miss Plaza, and in doing so, destroyed the proportions which are so integral to the garment. That is why the white looks so odd on her, as the bodice has been chopped off top and bottom, as well as the skirt having been shortened.

I’m probably one of the few bitter kittens who often likes Peter Pilotto. He creates fascinating garments with elements that ought not to work together, quirky, memorable outfits that certainly aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. He ought to be mighty pissed here that someone altered this dress drastically enough to destroy the proportions of all the different elements, leading to a dress that garners, rightfully, all this criticism. Aubrey actually looks very pretty here, at a quick glance, and the colors are flattering.

      • demidaemon

I respect your POV on PP. I also respectfully disagree with it. That said, I think PP is a designer who is a bit of “throw everything and the kitchen sink and see what sticks” sort of designer. It can work–on a rare occasion–but the only person I’ve seen wearing his designs that can remotely pull it off is Kerry Washington. And even then, it’s very divisive.

        • Qitkat

I’m not sure why I like the original dress. It certainly isn’t something I could possibly wear even in a pretend universe of being able to afford it. Something deep in my lizard brain, I expect!
Thanks for the respectful disagreement, not many places online to find that these days.

    • alyce1213

The people responsible for this are insane.

    • mmebam

I like the print a lot, actually. But it calls for a simple dress.

    • LaSylphide

I appreciate color and pattern, but I have yet to see anything by this designer that used either very effectively. It always looks like he’s trying to cram as much of both into Every dress just so it isn’t boring. Which it’s becoming.

    • d4divine

There should be a disclaimer on the label of this dress that say, ‘we highly recommend a height of 5′ 8″ minimum to pull off this dress’ I don’t mind the crazy on the model…her length spreads it out a bit…on Aubrey, it’s all scrunched up and crazy…I can’t even begin with those yellow shoes…

    • demidaemon

Hurk. That’s a vomit dress, in so many ways.

    • librarygrrl64

“There is just way too much dress going on here.”

I think that about every Peter Pilotto dress.

    • Peeve

Jeez, that is one fugly dress!

    • Courtney Cne’

Peter Pilotto needs to learn to edit. Every single one of his garments is overwrought and over-designed. His clothes give me headaches.
