Amanda Seyfried in Gucci at the “Lovelace” London Screening

Posted on August 12, 2013

We’re gonna call this pretty and we don’t care who hears it, dammit.

Amanda Seyfried attends special screening of “Lovelance” in London in a Gucci dress paired with Givenchy sandals.

There are those who would decry the granny panty, and at one time, we were among their kind. But that ship has sailed and it’s time to just accept that the fashion world loves sheer skirts over panties and starlets love to keep hauling the look out for our judgment. Besides, it’s also time to admit that sometimes, on some people, it’s a look that actually works. Sexy schoolmarm. It has just the right amount of sweet and hot to it. The only thing we’re not loving are the shoes, which are nice, but do little for the look.

I really, really, REALLY don’t like the Virgnia Woolf hairstyle.

Besides that, the color is lovely and her hair color is beautiful and a really interesting shade of dusky blond.

I don’t care if the fashion world accepts it, the back of the dress shows why sheer is the work of the devil!!!!

  • S Moriarty

    Sister Wives Gone Wild

    • gailfl87

Or maybe what the girls on Breaking Amish would wear on the red carpet

  • NBG

The fashion world is smoking something very potent. This look is not flattering on her or anyone else I have seen in it.

    • gabbilevy

Seriously, when Amanda Seyfried looks lumpy, you KNOW someone is high on the cray-cray.

  • Fordzo

This is her big chance to rock some stripper/porn star shoes. Grab that brass ring, Amanda!

  • jmorino08

I don’t get sexy at all. More like flighty school marm who forgot to put her dress on over her slip. Tres unflattering, too.

    • MoHub

Or her slip on under her dress.

  • JasmineAM

The color is gorgeous, but this “dress” is an abomination. Those shoes are pure fug too.

  • berkeleygirl

Honestly, I’m not looking at the dress beyond the collar line – that color is simply too stunning around her face. Drop-dead gorgeous… (It also doesn’t hurt that Seyfried looks just like my niece, glammed up.)

  • Rachael

The dress makes her look much bigger than she really is. It widens her shoulders and hips and makes her head look tiny! Plus that hair is awful!! Also, not really digging that shade of lipstick on her. I’ve seen her do red lips before and she can really pull it off, but something about that shade is a big, fat NO!

    • Aurumgirl

True. It’s such a frumpy and yet trashy look at the same time, what with it’s matronly collar and sleeves and then its transparency. Looks bad on the model too.

  • hughman

I prefer picturing “Chorus Line Leotard” over Granny Panty. Then again, hope springs eternal.

  • jtabz

Oh, I think she looks really lovely and that it’s a cheeky choice for a screening of this movie.

    • makeityourself

I see what you did there.

      • jtabz

Ha! For once, I wish I could claim the pun was intentional.

  • TSkot

    Just looks wrong

  • Simultaneously dumpy and trashy. That’s an impressive combination.

    • 3boysful

Seriously–this is AWFUL. All that fabric makes her appear huge, and we know she’s teeny, even for a Hollywood gal. Plus, as been previously noted, it’s sisterwife who must sadly work undercover as a cocktail waitress. And @Insidiously:disqus called it with the Virginia Woolf hair. It may be the lighting, but even the makeup’s bad.

    • Mazenderan

Agree so much. A dress that makes her look all frumpy round the waist while simultaneously showing some arse-cheek is a horrible, horrible achievement.

She also needs to sort out her eye/lip balance.

She suits that shade of blue – but that’s about all that can be taken from this.

  • nannypoo

Wow. I hate her hair and makeup even more than I hate this ugly dress.

    • BP180

      Perfect comment.

    • Daisy Walker

That lipstick looks like her lips enter a room a full five minutes before the rest of her gets there.

  • AmeliaEve

It seems an odd thing to get fussed about amidst all the other horrors, but I really hate the proportions of the sleeves. Two inches shorter would give a much better balance, I think. And if you aren’t going to put on a slip, then just go full out and leave the last several buttons on the skirt undone.

    • Lizzyisi

I agree with you completely about the sleeve length and the buttons on the skirt. I’d add that if you’re not going to line the whole top–just the front of it–you need to forego the strap around the ribcage and leave your back completely bare. Use adhesive bras or a backless one.

I was surprised to like this as much as I did.But it needs a few tweaks to be perfect.

  • alyce1213

Nope. I’ll never give up the fight against granny panties, especially under sheer skirts. Never!

    • conniemd

Me either. I don’t see what’s sexy about it. I get bras under sheer, but not panties.

  • Karen Belgrad

Maybe it’s the model-resemblance, but this would look AWESOME on Mena Suvari!

  • Sara__B

I was trying to think what would make this look better, but I give up. Too much is wrong. The fit is unflattering, the sheer back is tacky, a belt is needed, the hair is blah, the shoes are boring, and her lips stand out way too much in this crowd of bad styling choices.

  • Danielle West

Is she allergic to getting a pedicure?

    • Plin

Yeah. I actually like the look (on her): it’s a great color, and she has the right attitude to pull it off. I even like the hair and makeup (again, on her, not so much in the abstract).
But dear me, those TOES! Yikes. They’re making me twitchy.

      • Magatha

And yet: her toes are prettier than mine. Sometimes I’m not even sure I’m a girl.

  • crash1212

GAH. There isn’t one thing I like about this look…from the dowdy length of the sleeves, to the granny panty (I don’t care! I will not ever be OK with that look.), to the length of the dress, to the buttoned up to the neck blousey thing, to the messy dog-ear hair to the undone toe nails…and her toes seem to slip over the parameters of the shoes when she walks. Just – no…try again.

    • MoHub

For me, it’s not so much that it’s a granny panty but that it’s visible underwear regardless of cut. She just looks as if she forgot to put a slip on; there is nothing sexy about the see-through.

  • fiddlecub

I just can’t get behind you boys on this one. Head-to-toe fugly. Hair, lips, dress. Dumpy silhouette, weird sleeve length. I like the color, I guess…

  • amber.

  • bertkeeter

Looks better on her than model…not loving the granny bra any more than the granny pant!

  • elemspbee

yes, pretty. what’s happening with the blousoning up top, which is causing unpleasant proportions, to my eyes anyways?

  • CPK1

    Love it.

  • Lori

If this was lined instead of being shear over granny undies & bra I’d fight her for it. As is, she can keep it.

  • Anathema_Device

Eh, they can haul out all the granny panties they want, I really don’t care for them. There are some exceptions, probably, but I can’t think of any right now. I sorta maybe kinda liked this until she turned around. I love me a shirtwaist dress, but all the bits don’t come together here for me.

    Except her lipstick. GREAT color.

  • Qitkat

Well if our favorite uncles say this lifestyle of dressing is pretty, I suppose next we’ll be fawning over grannie pantie wedding gowns.
    I &#*^%*%ing can’t wait!

    • demidaemon

  • sagecreek

Seems a little Leslie Fay to me…

  • Jan de la Rosa

My mother would never let me wear those sandals without a pedicure outside my room. She needs motherly love or something…

  • MilaXX

I miiight like this on a taller, gal, but Amanda is too tiny for all that. Plus the shoes are also wrong and her feet look busted.

  • gg80302

I think she looks really pretty. But really, no time for a pedi?!

  • Kristie Cochran

Is it me or does she look like a young Jodie Foster in the top couple of pics? I think it’s her downward gaze and closed smile.

    • I JUST said that. Sorry I didn’t see yours first!!

      • Kristie Cochran

Glad to know I’m not the only one who sees the resemblance.

  • SewingSiren

This definitely works on her. The color and sheerness are quite beautiful. Although I think it looks best without the harsh flash and completely see=through effect.

  • JauntyJohn

It is Amanda’s own loveliness that makes this look. To me this is the uncommon instance of the wearer elevating the outfit rather than the reverse, where the clothes help transform the person in them.

To me the whole ensemble looks an Esther Williams costume, where she would drop the sheer piece before diving into a gigantic lillypad of chorus girls in a pool 20 feet below. Oh, look, she’s already got her hair styled to wear the swim cap.

I will say that the movement of the skirt, even in these still shots, looks very pretty. And given the subject of her film, I also hat tip her smarts to go for something pretty and flirty but not vampy and va-va-voom.

  • hellkell

I’m going to fight sheer skirts and granny panties to the death. Gladiator sandals wore me down, not this!

  • procrastinatrice

I am with you uncles, I think Amanda makes this work. I even love the Virginia Woolf hair! But I will admit that it looks a lot better without the flash lights.

  • Trisha26

    Just no.

  • formerlyAnon

She’s pretty. The dress is sparkly.

It’s also a transparent shirtwaist over an old fashioned bathing costume or playsuit or something. Which is odd, but the color is nice on her and it has spangles. And she’s pretty.

  • Amy909

no to the hair, shoes, and what looks like unclipped toenails??

  • In thumbnail, I TOTALLY thought that was Jodie Foster. Especially because of the blue. Anybody else see it??

  • sleepycat

    Love this look

  • boweryboy

My initial thought was, “But… she’s wearing granny panties under a sheer dress!”

And then I scrolled down to TLo’s comments and they shut. me. down.

  • Imasewsure

I love this – even the shoes but maybe other shoes would be better… dunno. but I think this is sexysweet and unexpected

  • Lilithcat

    Loathe granny panties.

But even aside from that, this dress makes her look dumpy.

    • filmcricket

I’ve decided the sheer-over-lingerie thing makes 99% of the population look dumpy. Like, I have seen eensy-weensy KStew and Lea Michele looking dumpy because of this combo. I really think the only people who can make it work are models, or former ones (Charlize Theron could probably pull it off).

  • Anniebet

Hmm, the bands at the elbows combined with the blousing of the top make her look refrigerator shaped, and we know she isn’t. Don’t mind the panties, although it’s getting a tad overdone now and borrriing. Limp hair in front isn’t her best look, but I do like the back. She’ll do, but I’d expect something more special for this event.

  • E. D.

The skirt seems a bit too long and TLo are totally right about the shoes.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

    Disco sister-wife. Love it!

  • Warrior89

I have irrational celebrity dislike for her. That being said, I’m not a fan of the dress in general, but it looks good on her. And I like the shoes A LOT…but maybe not with the dress?

  • LaSylphide

Sorry. Aside from the color and the polka dots, I hate it. Does the world really need to see panties AND bra? Underwear is called UNDERwear for a reason.

  • Jessica O’Connell

The only part of this look that I like are the shoes…

  • mhleta

I’m guessing that in person this dress reads more like it does in the first few shots and not as glaringly see-through as it does in the last few. In which case, I’m on board. This is my favorite blue and it probably moves like a dream. Could Christina Hendricks do this dress? I’m thinking yes, with a few tweaks to the neckline and a longer foundation under the bottom.

  • Tatiana Luján

The dress would be a lot better if the sleeves were short.

  • AC Simons

I think these are the only red carpet shoes she has – they’re the same in every photo op. Not crazy about the dress – the neckline is just too high.

  • teensmom99

Strangely, I think this only works in the pictures where you can see how sheer it is. The buttoned up part is actually kind of unflattering–only when you see the skin underneath does this look okay. I think fully lined, this would look good only on someone tall.

  • MoHub

This looked promising in the thumbnail. I’m soooooo disappointed!

  • filmcricket

This is multiple levels of awful. All I can say is that blue shade is lovely on her. That’s it.

    • Howard Sturrup

this oufit looks better on the model

  • Getoverit

Love the dress on her. Not digging the Carolina Ingalls hair or the shoes. Why don’t these starlets get their piggies done?

  • styrch

Would someone please giver her a better pedi?

  • Candigirl1968

I’ll take your word for it.

  • Dan_In_NYC

Did it really need to be sheer in the back? Methinks no.

  • Kate

For some reason, I love everything happening with this outfit.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The only thing I don’t like is the hair. I think she could’ve slipped neatly past the sexy schoolmarm look with different hair.

  • Shawn EH

What if they were granny running shorts, or, horror of horrors, a granny slip? Or even a granny miniskirt? Same dark color, just not as long as the sheer overlay? I don’t think it’ll ever not look wrong to me, like a weird bathing suit.

  • Jenny Moss

    she couldn’t get a pedi?

  • Jen

Her head looks nice. Designers need to start providing the right undergarments with their dresses, because while I don’t care for the dress, the visible bra AND straps is murdering anything remotely redeeming about the dress…

  • marlie

I sort of like this, except that it doesn’t seem to fit her terribly well (especially in the bust). Other than that, I’m actually not offended by the granny panties this time.

  • It IS pretty… I want to love this, normally I would (maybe with a slip instead of a panty, cmon Mands) but it really needs to be fitted around the bust area. I hate when dresses are cut at the waist but the top half is billowy. I don’t think it works on anyone, but especially not a girl with a rack.

  • NoveltyRocker

Conservatively buttoned to the chin, sleeves and hem cut long and modest… ALL pantylines visible… I think this wanted to be some kind of clever juxtaposition but just reads as a confused mistake.

  • v m

Sheer dress over granny panties : indifferent. But toes hanging off the edge of a shoe, I cannot abide.

  • irielle

This really looks like a Chloe Sevigny dress to me.

  • quiltrx

Take this off immediately and send it to Florence Welch–she’ll figure out what to do with it.

  • NYCRecessionista

I absolutely love this look on her – it’s sexy and demure all at once … and I don’t even mind the granny panties here.

  • Jecca2244

I LOVE this dress. and want it for myself with the underlay to the hem. yes, please.

  • guest2visits

Still hate the see- thru dresses but I have to admit – if this is one movie premiere ripe for a look that has borderline taste issues; this would it. Sexy in a sly way. Amanda looks very pretty.

  • kathrineb

I love this colour on her but this look is not my cup of tea. It’s very hard to pull off two really blousey loose pieces in the one outfit.

  • Tippi123

She’s worn these shoes before, hasn’t she? Also, does she have fungal nails? That would be sad. With or without fungal nails she’s one of my favourite lady stars!

  • demidaemon

Sorry, TLo, but this is a big NO all around to me. Bad color, mumsy pattern, and sheer skirts over granny panties. YUCK.

  • loopy
