Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy at the “Lovelace” NYC Screening

Posted on August 01, 2013

We love this dress, but we’re not convinced it’s the right dress for Amanda.

Amanda Seyfried at a screening of “Lovelace” in New York City in head-to-toe Givenchy.

Givenchy Resort 2014 Collection/Model: Dalianah Arekion

LOVELOVELOVE that skirt but it either it needs to be taken in at the waist or she needed to ditch this one, because it’s pretty much erasing her natural shape and making her look blocky. Givenchy managed to make an all-denim dress look chic as hell, but we’re thinking non-models – even movie star-shaped non-models – will have a hard time with a denim skirt AND a denim bodice. It’s all too heavy.

Her hair and makeup are gorgeous, we have to say. We don’t like the over-the-shoulder mermaid hair 99 times out of a hundred, but Amanda has exactly the right kind of old-fashioned face for it.

  • Put that hair in back where it belongs and this is an IN!

    • charlotte

She has the most amazing hair, so I understand that she wants people to see and envy it.

      • Kristin McNamara

I WISH I could get my hair to do that!!!

  • Hildegerd Haugen

    Hate that makeup.

  • Kathy_Marlow

The waist needs to be taken in, see how it bulges? It’d be perfect if not for that

  • It IS a great dress, and it really squares off her torso, and shortens it.

  • Joey Melliza

    She look fat!

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I would kill to look that “fat.”

  • filmcricket

It is kind of swallowing her whole, isn’t it? Too bad, because the colour’s great on her.

  • newleaf1

I don’t know – that dress strikes me as just being a bit fussy. Too much going on. But I’m not much into frou-frou, like that skirt. And I would be pissed if I were that tiny and my stylist put me in an outfit that made me look blocky like that.

  • gabbilevy

This dress looks like it needs someone with more of an hourglass figure, since Amanda has that rail-straight figure. Something about the makeup (maybe the lipstick color?) is rubbing the wrong way.

    • Jaeda Laurez

that’s exactly what I was thinking- you need boobs and hips for this dress.

    • MilaXX

Agreed, a curvier figure would be better.

    • RebeccaKW

Yea, the lips. That is not her shade of red.

  • kimmeister

It’s amazing how her feet are posed exactly in such a way so that we can’t see what kind of heels she has on, in every single picture!

  • clairellis

If the dress was winched more at the waist it would look a million times better. As it is she’s still a beauty. Love the hair and makeup.

  • Diego!

I love love love everything here but the big red lips. Maybe a tone down would have been perfect. But she is looking gorgeous!

  • Amy909

Can’t see the heel of the shoe, but the front looks too platformy for me!! I like the hair, but just wondering, is the more acceptable alternative to have your hair behind your ears rather than over the shoulder? i have long thick hair, and do the over the shoulder thing, but apparently a lot of people hate it on here. Putting it behind my ear makes my ears look big lol what to do!

  • Danielle L

It’s a great dress, I’m just not sure how much I love it on her. Shorten the hem and I would be on board.

Can’t wait for the movie to come out!

  • MilaXX

I like it, but I think it needs a belt to help define a waist.

  • Love the bare shoulders, the silky hair and the bold lip. Not loving the dress or the shoes.

    • demidaemon

I agree. Her face and hair are to die for here. The dress is a big ol miss.

  • Jessica Freeman

Its one too many ruffles going on with the skirt. I think the hair and make up is a little too much for the denim dress.

  • Adriana

This strikes me as Kristen Stewart’s dress…but Amanda does look pretty good in it.

  • decormaven

Wish she had gone for the chunky bootie, even if it is summer. Those strappy sandals are too lightweight for the denim. Also, those delicate bracelets are lost in the shuffle here.

  • zuzu

I’m amused by the guy in the minions T-shirt behind her.

  • aeb1986

I love that shes wearing a darker color, I think it brings out her features beautifully. But I agree, the shape doesnt do much for her. I think Michele Williams would look fab in this

  • wontons

Is there a dress? All I can see are LIPS. That lip color is so harsh on her!

  • chowwander

Not sure it’s the right dress for ANYONE.

  • The Versatile Chef

If you didn’t tell me what this movie was all about, I’d be able to tell anywasy by the crowd of guys standing behind her.

  • SewingSiren

    She looks lovely.

  • marlie

I like the dress a lot, but it does need to be taken in at the waist, and she needs to be reminded that the wide-legged stance (first picture) isn’t very flattering.

  • hughman

It looks like the kind of dress that when you take it off, you can just stand it in a corner.

  • appliquer

The dress is pretty – it’s the shoes that don’t work.

  • amber.

Maybe Jennifer Lawrence could pull it off.

  • bertkeeter

Hair and makeup beautiful! Skirt shades of Dolly Parton….only it would be in powder blue denim!

  • SylviaFowler

This girl needs a better stylist.

  • Lori

This is probably because of the 80s clothing discussion we had the other day about Carrie Diaries, but the ruffles on this are giving me prairie skirt flashbacks. I could have done without that.

  • Eric Stott

Nice dress, you’re right – odd fit and proportions.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t think the dress isn’t right for Amanda. I think the styling is wrong for the dress.
Edgier shoes, a less cute hairdo and some cool jewelery were needed to make this work.

  • amanda siegelson

i’m surprised no one here (that i see, anyway) has commented on the very strange photoshopping of the model’s picture onto that street background as opposed to actually having her stand on one.
does givenchy really not have enough money to shoot models on actual streets?

    • desi_girl

I think it might have more to do with never being able to find completely isolated streets and sidewalks in Manhattan and enough space to set up lighting equipment so that the dress could be captured in all its glory.

I found this entire campaign quite strange when I saw it for the first time.

    • Qitkat

And I just hate unnatural plastic poses like that.

  • Anniebet

She’s amazing in that close up. But, girl, where did your waist go? The dress is clever, but looks stiff.

  • LipstickForPigs

Dude in the minion shirt in the background is all “Where the porn stars be at!?”

  • Qitkat

I’m amazed that this is denim. It’s a great blend of hard and soft elements. But somehow it’s not working to its best advantage. Perhaps it needs more casual shoes, and lighter makeup. She couldn’t be more made up if she were going to be on the Oscars red carpet. Isn’t there a happy medium for toning it down?

  • largishbearishAtlish

I think the zipper really kills the outfit, all I see is that, like a bad ‘swath’, kill that and I think its fine….(okay, not as bad) and that HAIR! yech. looks like Cousin It from the Adams Family miscarried on her shoulder….want to lose 15-20 lbs? cut that monster off your shoulder….are their teeth under there sucking on your throat like some creepy parasite? or causing your lips to puff up that loud red color?
I think the dress is…interesting, would love! to see it in another brighter color (esp with her pale coloring)

  • Random Compliments

I guess I’m alone in this, but I think she looks amazing. This might be a WERQ for me.

  • CommentsByKatie

Looks like Angelina Jolie make-up. I thought this was Angelina at first! Not sure I like it as much on Amanda.

  • MzzPants

I dunno’…I think she looks quite perfect and very French, head to toe.

  • pop_top

Amanda wears some great short dresses, but it seems like they’re never fitted for her height.

  • mickiemonkey

I think she looks timeless and classy. The model’s booties are giving me a migraine.

  • Sam Smith

Do not like the red lipstick, yes she is going for porn star makeup nod, but does not look good at all. I really luv the dress.

  • lehen

oh man, that lipstick color was MADE for her

  • guest2visits

I think she’s managing to pull off a dress that I don’t really like all that much; she’s very beautiful.
But I love the booties the model has – I wonder who makes them.

  • Tuneful54

OUT. It’s like one look down to the bust (40s siren), another down to the knees (upscale hillbilly denim–yes, I said it), and a third down to the ground (prom shoes that aren’t the right color, and I get a twisted ankle just looking at ’em).

  • Claudia

I feel like its the mermaid hair that’s contributing to feelings of blockiness….

  • Getoverit

The dress makes her look like she has Bratz doll snap on legs and shoes. Also, milky skin is pretty and healthy, but this makes her look pale blue and proud.
