Allison Williams in Valentino at the 2013 MTV VMAs

Posted on August 26, 2013

We’ll start off by saying she looks gorgeous; so gorgeous, in fact, that this might be an all-time style Personal Best for her.

“Girls” star Allison Williams attends the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in a Valentino dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes, and Paige Novick earrings.

Valentino Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Juliana Schurig (ELITE)

But MAN, does she look like she’s at the wrong event or what? In a sea of faux-grills and crotch dresses, Miss Priss here looks like she might faint from all the vulgarity on display. It’s the VMAs, not your wedding, dear.

We tease because we love. And because it’s second nature to us. Really, she looks very pretty.

Y’all hit the nail on the head. Gorgeous, but boy does she look like she accidentally got out of the limo at the wrong place.

  • Danielle

Stunning, but SO not the right venue.

  • Constant Reader

Nancy Kerrigan’s 1994 Olympics costume. On an extremely pretty girl. That’s all I can see.

    • largishbearishAtlish

drat! some one beat me to it!

      • Kent Roby

Same here, dammit! Great (or twisted?) minds, I suppose!

        • Constant Reader

I suspect all great minds are a bit twisted. 🙂

          • NYCGlamourpuss

The good news is that the dress got a 9.5 from the Russian judges. The bad news is that when she stepped out the limo, she was immediately knee-capped by Jeff Gillooly.

    • NBG

Should have known that people in this group would beat me to the Nancy Kerrigan reference! 🙂

  • Sweetie, I don’t know which person on your team of make her a star people told you to go to this event. Fire them. Then have a long hard talk with your style team about venue and blowing their wad on a crap event like this.

  • sagecreek

    I can’t believe I like this, but I do.

    • chubby ballerina

      Her makeup is perfect.

      • Little_Olive

Except… someone went a little overboard with the inner-eye-corner brightener.

  • fuchaforeva

Lo unico que le falta es el misal y el rosario! LOL
The only thing missing is a rosary and the little bible you get @ your first communion! LOL

    • Betsy

I’m SO happy I’m not the only one who had this First Holy Communion thought. Needs little white gloves and a lace veil. Oh, and patent leather Mary Janes. We’ll call it “Adult First Holy Communion: You’re Never Too Old!”

      • fuchaforeva

        HAHAHA totally!!!!

      • Louise Bryan

Wouldn’t the padre be worried about clothing malfunctions with a hem that short?

        • Betsy

Since she isn’t a 10-year-old boy, the padre couldn’t care less!

    • AnneElliot

Yes!! The model’s white clutch looks like she’s carrying a white leather-bound Bible.

    • Aurumgirl

      You beat me to it.

  • fuchaforeva

She had celebrated her first communion earlier that day….

  • kimmeister

    Her makeup looks flawless.

  • Jacquelyn

But yeah, totally not VMAs, though with the crop this year so far, this is like a nice palate cleanser.

    I want those shoes.

  • Betsy

SO glad she opted NOT to have that hiddy BIB thing around her neck, like the model!!

  • alyce1213

This is a dress I’d love to look at close up and personal. It’s exquisite. Why she wore it to the VMAs is beyond me.

    • The amount of detail is intense. It’s giving me bridal. Maybe Vegas Bride at current length.

  • fuchaforeva

The model’s shoes look so much like MY first communion shoes from 30+ years ago! Wtf???

  • fuchaforeva

I would totally wear that dress for my wedding in city hall in NYC (if I had one)

  • StellaZafella

Okay, I get it…Allison’s going someplace NICE afterward.

    • largishbearishAtlish

      dinner maybe?

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Lord, can she rock that post-Kennedy era elegance or what? Totally wrong for the venue, but lovely nonetheless.

  • ashtangajunkie

Waaaayy too classy for the VMAs.

    • PastryGoddess

      You beat me to it.

    • Little_Olive

How sad is it that we are criticizing an outfit for not being slutty :/

      • ashtangajunkie

It’s more a criticism of the VMAs, in my opinion.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

Isn’t it a bit too on the nice side for VMAs? I’m kind of offended for Valentino that this dress was in the same room as Miley’s exposed tongue (although it’s been forking everywhere).

  • jilly_d

  • Shawn EH

Yes, and at her height, she still killed despite all the sluttier getups. She had that confident glow.

  • MilaXX

It’s pretty but not even close to being venue appropriate.

    • sagecreek

True, but given how the evening went, it’s not all bad to be known as the gal who looked classy.

  • SugarSnap108

Second wedding. I can’t think of another event where a woman could wear this.

  • ChelseaNH

Auditioning for the Nancy Kerrigan biopic?

  • neonseattle

very pretty. i want to know what lipstick she’s wearing.

  • TSkot

    Missing a belt.

    • alyce1213

No, not with all that detail.

      • TSkot

Such an obvious seam at the waist needs a self-belt to hide it.

        • alyce1213

Not to beat a dead horse, we just disagree, but I can see that this is not a simple flat seam that needs to be covered. It’s stitched to look almost like a self-belt. It’s not as defined as the model’s, which clearly is piping.

          • TSkot

            No, but thanks for sharing.

  • Janet B

  • bayusc

You guys are really seeing something that I don’t on this one… Really not much to this…

  • marlie

She looks great – best I think I’ve seen her look – but WAAAAY too classy for this event.

    • Heather

Agree – but isn’t it better to be Too Classy than to be Too Trashy?

      • marlie

Oh, absolutely. My mother taught me well. 😉

  • Blair Sylvester

points for looking like herself/looking at ease but i wish she had more fun accessories. It is still summer

  • Call me Bee

Awww I like this a lot. It does give off a “skating dress” vibe, but it’s a gorgeous dress (the detail is awesome–looks like hand-done beading…) The short length and killer heels keep it looking too twee.

  • She *does* look very pretty here and the shoes were a great choice, even if the venue wasn’t.

  • twigg

She looks like she’s the chaperone.

  • GillianHolroyd

smart move eliminating that neck yoke detail.

  • Qitkat

One thing I can really really appreciate about Valentino is that they know the meaning of A Collection. Allison chose a beautiful look from this one, the virginal schoolgirl temptress, fall 2013 version, and wisely decided or was advised to remove the collar yoke, which did indeed take it into communion territory. I can well imagine she was one of the grownups at this event, as I imagine most of the rest of the attendees thought they were going to the adult video awards. Is there really much of a different in the costumes chosen by attendees at either one?
Grandma will be in the pew at the back praying for their immortal souls. /cackle/ ;-p

    • ballerinawithagun

The Virginal Schoolgirl Temptress still works for old school rock. Procol Harum, Whiter Shade of Pale, One of sixteen vestal virgins… I wish she would have worn the model’s shoes, don’t care for the black with this, but at least they fit!

  • largishbearishAtlish

where are the ice skates? when does she do the double axel?

very pretty, but ditto all the ‘looks like at wrong events’. this is delightful and oddly wrong for the VMAs (maybe if she had a stuff monkey sticking out the side, or a purse that was an actual refugee child?)

  • I forgot to mention that she was a great guest judge last week on Project Runway. She did not disappoint.

This dress looks like a wedding dress, but most the other attendees looked ready for the red carpet to Dante’s Inferno. Tight clothes. Vlugar. Utterly boring. No imagination left with the usually suspects.

  • Monabel

It’s refreshingly discordant with the prevailing stuff at this event.

  • imakeart

    are the shoes red?

  • kim bunchalastnames

i think this is fine for the venue — the short hem is the saving grace. and the black shoes. LOVE.

  • d4divine

Between Anna Wintour and daughter showing up at The Met Ball dressed for a garden party….and this…WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!!! She does look pretty though….

  • p_capet

  • Persiaa

    First Communion dress?

  • stu844

but isn’t she usually prissy and conservative when it comes to dressing? what should she have worn that would have been appropriate for both her and the venue?

  • quiltrx

Ice skater wedding dress. But she does look very pretty!

  • SewingSiren

I think it needs a little something at the neckline. Kinda like Valentino showed it .

    • BrooklynBomber

Totally agree, though it seems no one else does. And as much as I hate booties, I think the shoes on the model work great with it (though I do like the color of AW’s otherwise boring pumps).

  • AnneElliot

I’m not crazy about the mesh in the top, but she’s definitely classing up the joint. And bless her for wearing a pair of elegant, tasteful pumps instead of hooker heels.

  • KikiAvocado

the hair and makeup don;t go with the dress and the dress does not go with the event…but all separately, the hair makeup and dress are beautiful on her!

  • Erica_Vuitton

I bet she thought the mesh was so edgy! I kid I kid, the whole look is beautiful (loooove the oxblood shoes) but she just looks way too classy for the VMAs.

  • Dan_In_NYC

Personal best, and completely wrong for the VMAs

  • Sara Brams-Miller

She really does look beautiful. But I mean, really . . . would you expect her to wear anything showing a lot of skin?

  • I am so totally wearing (something like) this on my wedding day. Brilliant inspiration!

  • Leah Elzinga

    that FACE.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Yes, TLo! First thing I thought was that she looks like she’s the bride at a more casual wedding – perhaps her second time down the aisle. Or it’s a Vegas wedding but she wanted to be a little more dressy. Or it’s 1971, and while she’s waiting for Elvis’ divorce from Priscilla to go through, she’s dropping hints to him with the dress.

Or I could be over thinking this too much…

  • formerlyAnon

She looks lovely but it IS almost bridal. Which is odd because she’s young enough that she ought to be able to wear this without it looking too bridal, but that’s not how it strikes me.

  • MarissaLG

I think she should have left the collar. It adds a lot of interest and makes the look edgier. She’s so pretty it makes me want to punch a wall, though.

  • Tracy_Flick

It looks slightly tennis-ice dancing-first communion, but she looks great so I can’t get too worked up about it.

  • Honey, whoever did your make up, never let them go. Even if it means a dungeon and handcuffs. They are seriously talented. 🙂

This is the best face you have ever given, and what a glorious sight it is to behold.

  • HM3

  • Lilyana_F

This gives me predominantly ice dancer.

  • kathrineb

She looks great. Not a massive fan of the netting but its one of those things everyone loves….

  • I mean she’s beautiful, but she’s just so generic.
