Good lord, the VMAs are challenging for a couple of fabulously bitchy fashion bloggers like us. We’d look ridiculous telling, say, Busta Rhymes that he needs to be in a suit or something. Or wagging our fingers at any random starlet for showing too much skin. It’s a fashion freak show and as such, it should be celebrated, not tut-tutted or pooh-pooh’d.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways of doing it wrong. And we are nothing without our opinions, darlings. So as much as we want to just accept Adam’s overwrought personal style, we just can’t sign off on this look:
Adam Lambert attends the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in a Lanvin suit.
The all-grayness makes everything look drab and flat. That’s the number one issue here. We don’t like his penchant for Frankenstein shoes or makeup or the way he wears his hair and over-accessorizes, but we’ve pretty much accepted all of that as his own personal armor for getting through the world (which is exactly what personal style is). So while we don’t actually much like what he’s trying to do here, we can dig it as his thing. But even so… contrast is something some people need more than others in their clothing and Adam definitely strikes us as someone who needs it. White or black or bright pink – we don’t care what, but that shirt needed to be another color. We’re also not crazy about the open collar, which, when combined with the makeup and the jewelry and the hair, has a distinctly Lounge Lizard vibe, which doesn’t suit him at all.
And ohmigod those are the ugliest men’s shoes we’ve seen in AGES.
