WERQ: Nicki Minaj in Roberto Cavalli at the 2013 BET Awards

Posted on July 01, 2013

If we know our Bitter Kittens, there will be much discussion of Miss Nicki’s roots, but we don’t care, because the rest of the look is straight up drama and fierceness.

Nicki Minaj attends 2013 BET Awards held at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles in a Roberto Cavalli dress paired with John Hardy jewelry.

You WERQ that Elvira look, girl. Scary Snaps.

Yeah, it’s boobtastic and yeah, the roots kind of grate, but we just love the intense attention-seeking qualities on display here. Her body looks amazing and we appreciate that the dress has just enough edge to keep it from being merely a “stripper Morticia” kinda thing.

Plus, nothing’ll ever make these two queens happier than a well-deployed Wonder Woman bracelet.

If only she looked a little bit happy about being there. And looking so good.

    • Little_Olive

I actually think if she wasn’t serving that face, this would have gone from werk (-ish, I am not agreeing with TLo’s verdict) to ridic. I mean, the sides are made of shredded plastic, the lace panelling is hideous, the babyheads are lactating in some prison… I say that face is saving it.

  • Rand Ortega

Can’t stop staring at the eyelashes. If necessary, she could just bat them & fly right out of there.

    • Darren Nesbitt

is that bad? She looks amazing far away. But RPDR up close.

    • StellaZafella

You, too can now have your own “Barbie Minaj” doll, complete with interchangeable eyelashes and choice of root colors…underwear and accessories sold seprately.

      • MikeW_Vegas

Do they sell underwear for this model? I would have thought it wasn’t available.

  • conniemd

If she ever decides to stop singing or loses her voice, she could definitely have a career as a WWE diva with those hoohas and that fierceness. Can’t you just picture Nicki grabbing the other diva by the hair and slinging her down, yelling “take that bitch.”

    • TAGinMO

Hmmm. Does “hooha” not mean what I always thought it meant? 🙂

      • MoHub

I think that word means what you think it means. (Thank you, Inigo Montoya!) Connie evidently meant hooters.

      • akprincess72

        I equate hoo-ha to ‘the good china’…

    • jen_vasm

I wish one day she would do some sort of ‘Unplugged’ sound & corresponding look: maybe a stripped-down, underproduced rap style and no wig/natural makeup/noncracktastic clothes. She’s a good enough rapper and definitely stunning enough to pull it off in a spectacular way.

      • MilaXX

Now you got me reminiscing over LL Cool J’s Unplugged.

        • jen_vasm

          Yeah. Good times, good times.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

sorry, but her boobs look weird…

    • formerlyAnon

If by weird you mean fake, hard and not fun to play with, I agree.

      • Monzerrat Ontiveros

        You read my mind

  • Jaeda Laurez

I know, but part of her whole schtick is looking like a “Barbie.” So unapologetically fake hair/eyelashes/contacts are all part of the drag. I’m just glad she decided to look like a pretty Barbie instead of the one that you did all the stuff to and then threw away after her clothes ripped/got lost.

  • colleenjanel

I think you boys might be smoking the good stuff. The dress is way too boobalicious. Not to mention that WERQs aren’t just about how you look but how you carry yourself. Nikki looks completely vacant. The ONLY thing I like about this look is the cuff.

    • AnaRoW

Therein lies my problem: the completely vacant stare. It’s actually distracting. I think she looks great from the neck down. Yeah, the dress is boobalicious but I don’t find boobs as off-putting as some. It’s okay to show them off sometimes.

      • Darren Nesbitt

I just tried to find a picture of her perfect barbie smile but she has this vacant face in all photos (even inside the theater while seated). Maybe the stylist also directs her on which face to use with this dress? Does a sexy Elvira dress not allow a soft human face? Either way I agree with this WERQ

        • colleenjanel

Vacant doesn’t belong with any dress. IMO, if you’re trying to imitate a plastic doll, that should disqualify you for a WERQ.

          • Darren Nesbitt

lol True. Is this her first WERQ (I’ve been rooting for her).

      • ThaliaMenninger

The vacant stare and perfectly penciled brows and lashes and everything else happening here make her look like something from Madame Tussaud’s. Watch out for melting wax! Those boobs alone are going to cause quite a puddle.

  • wina

    take note Christina….

  • Arjay Gallo

Actual goddess tbh. And I know I’m gonna be in the minority here, but I LOVE the roots. Since she got a new person to handle her wigs, I think she’s had it on lock.

    • ConnieBV

I think the roots work with the look. Madonna sure keeps rocking that look.

  • MannahattaMamma

I…just…they’re like attack boobs. If you even *look* at Miss Minaj wrong, they’re going to leap outta that dress & pummel you to the ground. Who needs a security detail with those things perched on your chest?

  • teensmom99

Sorry, I just can’t. It’s kind of you to want to throw Nicki a WERQ but I’m not buying it. The top half of that dress is just awful. Here are just some of the problems: The low cut thing with those cheap straps creating some sort of weird effect (can’t say keyhole when it’s that large–I don’t know what to call it) and the height of the upper horizontal strap and the fact that the material looks like a black lace bra.

  • Pepper Collins

    Mine too!

  • majorbedhead

She looks vapid. Mouth agape, dead eyes. Like an automaton stripper Barbie.

    • Glam Dixie

I’m pretty sure that if she tried to put an actual expression on her face, that caked on makeup would crack fall off in chunks.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

How is that not stripper Morticia? Dress is tacky as hell.

  • Her stoned out expression just reinforces her manufactured, product of a focus group on how to be a fame whore, schtick that causes me to hate her so. Yes, this is the best she’s looked in a while, but it’s not a WERQ for me.

  • SewingSiren

    She owns the artifice.

    • formerlyAnon

I wish she looked like she was having more fun with it though. Cause usually when I see film/photos of her she looks like she’s *owning* the fun – it’s the thing that keeps me kindly disposed. Maybe it’s just her posing face.

  • Julie Ree

And for the rest of today Dominatrix Barbie will be floating around in my head as a new art project…

  • Yeah. Her wig is a fail, unfortunately. It looks like in came it two parts: a middle part piece and a half wig piece. At least it could have been blended in properly.

  • Knightley

Sorry, but I’ve seen fiercer expressions on blow up dolls. Plus, the hair and the eyelashes….just no.

  • LuisaNL

She’s not werqing it ergo, it’s not a werq. I hate to disagree with TLo, but I am just not feeling it.

  • Glam Dixie

I glanced at the photo first and then started reading the first line and I thought for sure it said ,”If we know our Bitter Kittens, there will be much discussion of Miss Nicki’s boobs”, then I had to backtrack, oh ROOTS, lol.

  • joanna dash

Not feeling the “butt chest” look she has going on.

  • marlie

I kind of love this. The dress is attention-grabbing and sexy, without going “too far” as she is wont to do. Sure, the hair is problematic, and the dress could fit a teensy bit better, but she’s definitely serving it up here.

  • reminds me of one of the drag race contestants. she was boring, i dont remember her name, but she had this ridiculous breast-plate.

anyway, dont love the design of the dress, but she wears it well.

  • LaSylphide

Winner of the Golden Globes award.

  • CommentsByKatie

I usually hate roots or any two-tone hair, but I think it actually works with this look, somehow. Ups the drama.

  • Shawn EH

The hair gives me a Debbie Harry vibe, which is always good. But the bracelet is kind of a golden shackle, which is alternately fierce or disturbing. Can’t decide.

  • nannypoo

Her roots don’t bother me because it’s obviously a decision rather than an accident. Her hair color is not one I would choose for myself, but it appears to be a deliberate choice to have two dramatically different colors going on at the same time. Her style in everything she wears is provocative and often unattractive, and this dress is certainly boob-forward, but I think she looks great.

  • Agreed! But I think she looks gorgeous.

  • Darren Nesbitt

WERQs are based on the individual and their past TLO experiences right? So for Nicki this is definitely a WERQ.

  • I think the only time I really disagree with you is about Wonder Woman bracelets. I insist that to be considered well-deployed there has to be a pair of them. This looks lopsided! The hair, the face, the boobs, everything else is symmetrical, the bracelets should be too!

  • MilaXX

I like the hair. Since. the roots are intentional they don’t bother. I have issues with folks singing the explicit version of a song on a televised broadcast though. I think I heard maybe 3 words of he performance. The rst was one long bleep.

  • Jessica Freeman

That weird strip at her boobage bugs, and of course the roots. The rest is snaptastic.

  • TheAmericaness

    Chin down: WERQ!!!!

Chin up: DEAD!!!!!! What the hell? Is she ok? Did someone just roll her out like a mannequin and set her there? Wait? Is she a wax figurine? I’m serious. Come to think of it, I’m actually impressed.

  • mjude

i am fascinated by her eyelashes.

    • LaSylphide

Um, I don’t think they’re hers. 🙂 I’m surprised she can lift her eyelids.

      • mjude

i know they are not hers, they seem to be wider than her face!

  • Sonja Brisson

The fake eyelashes that actually go into the hair on the sides of her head and dragon lady scary pointy angry nails just leave me longing for elegance. Stripper aesthetic should be so over by now.

    • MilaXX

The BET awards was hardly the place for elegance. This outfit fit the venue perfectly.

  • Janet B

She looks stunned by the WERQ which is too bad since she looks fierce.

  • I actually don’t mind the roots. After all, the wig/extensions are fake. It’s not like she’s fooling anyone.

    • snarkykitten

so why bother with the roots if the wig is fake anyway?

      • formerlyAnon

It’s been a look for a while. An inexplicable one, but a look.

  • bertkeeter

Fromw what I’ve seen from thr BET Awards…this is fantastic!

  • MilaXX

ALL the hair Nicki wears screams FAKE HAIR. Subtlety has never been her strong suit.

    • Jane Patterson-McGuire

I don’t get the impression subtlety is something she’s even interested in.

  • Hildegerd Haugen

    I like this.

  • Sonja Brisson

MilaXX — my point exactly. There doesn’t seem to be room for elegance!

  • Lesley

too much boobage, it ventures on the line of trashy for me. this dress would look amazing on someone with a smaller chest, and the wig looks horrible.

  • jmorino08

    Not a fan. Baby heads.

  • Ashleigh

um….I kind like the roots?? [ducking]

  • xmixiex

I just don’t get how anyone else looking like this would get OMG BABYHEADS UGH and she gets a werq. buh?

  • Danielle L

That cuff is giving me life. Holy boobs.

  • unbornfawn

The roots actually work with the rest of the look.

  • I just had a mammo this morning(no lie) and my boobs hurt more now, looking at this.

  • Diego!

Her tits are squeezing and need air! She looks really good, but it’s not a WERQ to me. She is almost there tough!

  • maggiemaybe

A rather demur look for her, no?

  • Gloriana Reginata

For a change (since I usually loathe the “ombre” look), her roots really go with that whole tawny/black look from tip to toe.

  • TSkot

    Tacky as presenter-at-porn-awards shit.

  • GorgeousThings

Actually, I rather like the ombred roots. I like the whole outfit. The only thing that bothers me is that the dress is cut and fitted in such a way that it gives her “chicken cutlets” at her armpits.

  • samo_samo

LOL @ “Plus, nothing’ll ever make these two queens happier than a well-deployed Wonder Woman bracelet.” The cuff is fierce!

  • largishbearishAtlish

ugh, out out out. The ‘boobalicious’ part almost looks like a strapped over drawing..what next purple hair? orange wig? She is very high on my irrational annoyance factor list. Does she have talent(s)?

  • formerlyAnon

    “intense attention seeking” Ha!

As code for “make your boobs look like hard little cantaloupes and no fun at all (or maybe I’m just not wired to appreciate the look)” that’s pretty good. The hair is well within her usual ballpark, so whatevs.

  • Betsy

Exactly! I really love T Lo, but they are gay men. That means they don’t know about boobs. Like the pain of squishing the baby-heads to the point that they make *that* kind of cleavage. Not natural. And. Can. Hurt. Like. Hell. (Also, as far as I’m concerned, not attractive.) That’s a bigger drawback to the overall look than her roots will *ever* be. Next time, Elvira — erm Nicki — buy the dress one size larger, and have the rest of it tailored down to skin-tightness. Remember the rule of fit: always buy the one that fits your largest area — in your case, it’s definitely the breastages — and have a decent dressmaker take in the other parts.

    • StellaZafella

I don’t think being gay men has anything to do with it…ask any drag queen what it feels like to get that much cleavage from nothing more than ‘pec flab’. But I’m voting your comment up in sympathy because I know that, as much as it hurts to push all of that together…it hurts just as bad when you let it loose afterwards!

  • Anniebet

Sorry, I just can’t get with the program. This is too little too late to make up for all the years of ludicrousness.

  • Alison Jimenez

Too much with the baby heads!

  • silaria

…man, I’ll bet TLo regret coining the term “babyheads” now, considering it’s used on EVERY woman showing more than the standard amount of cleavage. IMO, there are no babyheads here – the dress is well fitted and while the boobs are certainly being pushed together, they’re not squashed by any means. She looks good, in a Vampirella kind of way, and I say that as someone who finds her music almost physically painful.

    • makeityourself

Well, those don’t look like babyheads to me. It just looks like she has three heads. Perhaps two of them are plastic; I don’t know. Either way, the dress is wearing her, instead of the other way around.

  • Lucas

She looks amazing, but I was kind of starting to depend on her red-carpet craziness!! For another celebrity to look this good would be HOT, but for her it is almost tame!! Where is the pope? Where are the sewed-on stuffed animals?? Why isn’t her hair electric blue or cotton candy pink????

  • ErmengardeGreen

Stripper Daenerys Targaryen. In kind of a good way!

  • I’m ok with the roots, but the level of cleavage makes me a little uncomfortable in a “I’m not sure I know you that well” kind of way.

    Hi. I’m old.

  • She doesn’t look like she is werqing it. She looks like she is holding her breath in it. Can’t get on board with the dress, the squeeze-o-boobs or the hair. Sorry. Not werqing for me.

  • kimiakay

Hey, I’m older, and I definitely don’t know her at all :)) She has a beautiful face and figure and I know this is her schtik and usually I like it. But all I see are boobs and roots. Broots? I’m also a little surprised her lip isn’t a little darker.

  • ailujailuj

now… if you gonna do roots and heads… thasss the way to werq it. she generally gives me a headache but this is definitely her look. nice cuts on the dress too. I’m coveting the ww power cuffs.
but her facial expression needs to be blurred out. reads “disoriented pornstar.”

  • titaness25

To be fair to her, I don’t think she’s physiologically capable of being anything other than boobtastic.

  • Trisha26

Are we sure this is really Nicki and not her Wax Museum clone? Adult Vid Awards all the way for me. No werq.

    • demidaemon

Adult Vids would have had a slit up to there and had it cut down to the belly button with the boobs glued to the bodice. This is much more elegant.

  • Aaminah Khan

Girlfriend, smile – or at least give us a little bitchface. You look great!

  • gracedarling

It’s a tenuous link at best, but ever since that Joe Zee photoshoot where she was glammed up in late 18th century gear, I can’t shake the image of her as being a kind of updated black Angelica from di Lampedusa’s Il Gattopardo. These are her widows weeds, naturally.

  • akprincess72

She looks like a ‘real doll’, which is not meant as a compliment.

  • mickiemonkey

Mammogram dress, hence her slightly worried look. But the rest of her, hot damn! I’m going to go eat a cheeseburger and get my curve on.

  • Imasewsure

I get the WERQ…. Love that hair and makeup (and kind of love that doll face expression too since it seems like part of the ensemble). I’ overlooking the giant cans too because that is just part of her thing…dress is fab on her(since I’m ignoring the cans)

  • demidaemon

She looks a bit subdued, for her. I approve.

  • Except for the hair, she looks good here. I don’t generally care for clothing that screams the need for attention or too much boobage for that matter, but her body rocks in this dress. The dress fits like a glove, and her body looks beautiful. Seriously. A great fit. I like those little side slat thingies.

  • lilazander

Sorry, too much boob, it’s ruining the effect her dress could have. The dress is kinda boring too.

  • Fred Vaughn

Guys, you MISSED THE BABYHEADS!! That’s rare for TLo.
