WERQ: Janelle Monáe in Dolce&Gabbana at the 2013 BET Awards

Posted on July 01, 2013

Janelle Monáe attends the 2013 BET Awards in Los Angeles in a Dolce&Gabbana suit paired with Jimmy Choo ‘Lance’ sandals, Neil Lane rings, Norman Silverman earrings, and a Katarina Maxine choker.

We sometimes get a little bored with the repetitive quality of her style, but this is a deliciously chic way to interpret her standard. Love the pops of glitter and silver throughout. You WERQ that signature look, Miss Janelle.

That HAIR. To. Die. She looks fabulous, different, but still like herself.

    • Louise Bryan

I’ve always envied sculptable hair. It took washing my hair, putting it into a ponytail holder while wet, 50+ bobby pins and a hair net to put my hair into an acceptable ballet chignon. Which was usually falling apart by the end of class.

  • teensmom99

Love this way of taking what works for her and elevating it. Snaps.

  • lexilexi

That is one huge sparkling spider-like creature on her neck.

    • 3boysful

I know. But I would never have thought it possible to do that and the necklace, but it works here. File that away for a future red carpet–ha!

  • Rand Ortega

I’m obsessed w/ Janelle. She’s my muse & ideal. This is luminous. WERQ infinity!

  • PastryGoddess

She wins on sparkle and hair alone. Luv Huh

  • Android Janelle goes glam. I love it, top to toe.

    • MilaXX

lol, she seems to have a weird fascination with androids. Her fans call themselves fanDROIDS

      • gabbilevy

It’s actually a known pop culture reference, harkening back to Metropolis (1927) and the Maschinenmensch (Maria Robot). And while Janelle has made it her entire persona, so it seems, it’s recently been done by Beyonce, Gaga, Kylie, and Madonna and — I love this — apparently C-3PO from Star Wars and the Blade Runner robots are also based on Maschinenmensch.

        • Rand Ortega

This is EXACTLY why I love my fellow PUF’s & BK’s!

        • You are a font of fab info! Thanks for sharing this.

        • StellaZafella

RuPaul paid tribute to Maschinenmensch in the theme thread for the 4rd season of Drag Race as androids, as well…replete with a gold-plated body suit.

          • gabbilevy

Ooh I didn’t know about that one! Love.

        • Lucía Gavello

Even though I find the political aspects of Metropolis questionable, the movie itself was so beautiful one can imagine why many artists draw form its aesthetic elements. I think I heard Whitney Houston referenced Maschinenmensch in the video for Queen of The Night.

        • Bridget Smith

Fascinating! And it’s not just Janelle Monae’s persona: her albums are (more or less) concept albums that tell stories set in an android-populated world. Her first EP was actually called Metropolis: The Chase Suite, and it’s a Romeo & Juliet story about an android and a human. They get caught, and there’s a bounty put on the android’s head-parts. It’s quite good.

          • fursa_saida

That album is incredible. I always feel a bit bummed when people only fixate on her style–of course it’s meant to draw attention, but it’s connected to her music in a very clear conceptual way. But then, I’m a die-hard Bowie fan, so I have a huge weakness for that sort of thing.

          • gabbilevy

Yup! And her next album was called The ArchAndroid, and it’s part II and III of the story. It’s a great trio.

      • PastryGoddess

Well her last album was called the ArchAndroid and it was fabulous. She also talks about androids a lot in her interviews

    • Rand Ortega

Have you seen her video, “Many Moons”? You hit the nail on the head.

      • Precisely why I used the word android. (grin)

        • Rand Ortega

Of course. I should’ve known. You’re way ahead of me, Kiltdntiltd.

          • Not a bit of it, dear man. We just think alike.

  • crash1212

This is pretty close to perfection to my eye. Way to rock that lady suit Janelle!

  • MilaXX

Love her. She and Erykah Badu, put it down last night.

    • PastryGoddess

Between them and Charlie Wilson, I was done

      • MilaXX

Uncle Charlie gave me LIFE! That is how you do a tribute. He showed up young’uns half his age.

        • PastryGoddess

My whole house was rocking with all the dancing we were doing. I think I pulled few muscles

        • Introspective

charlie still had the moves and his voice is flawless. loved every minute!!!

also i need whatever skin cream pharrell uses because the glow of this dude’s skin for a 40 yr old burns me with envy.

          • PastryGoddess

            I believe its called “Cool”

          • MilaXX

I am positive Pharell has a painting in the antic. Dude does not age!

          • MilaXX

Uncle Charlie was looking pretty fly as well. I loved it when he said he didn’t want to sweat out his suit.

          • Introspective

agreed! charlie was clearly up there to teach the young fools how its really done…

          • fursa_saida

Pharell looks EXACTLY THE SAME and it freaks me out because I know a 21-year-old lookalike and sometimes I wonder.

    • Introspective

janelle looked gorgeous both in this look and her stage look… she was stomping and prancing like a pro in those black and white booties–which were fucking fierce.

erykah is my everything. she can do no wrong for me. janelle and erykah together made my head explode.

    • formerlyAnon

When Ms. Badu is on, she is ON. I’ve seen her onstage when she appeared to have wandered there by accident and without enthusiasm, but I always go see her again when I get an affordable chance because when it’s good it’s SO good.

(which sounds rather more like a relationship one should be examining carefully, possibly with the help of a counselor, than I meant it to . . .)

      • H2olovngrl

Hilarious! You are in an unhealthy co-dependent relationship with Erykah Badu. Too funny.

  • clatie

It was also about a zillion degrees outside, so I’m throwing in a bunch of bonus points.

    • H2olovngrl

I was thinking she was probably THIS CLOSE to melting into a pool of persperation. It has been hot out here! Definite kudos her way!

  • sablehunter

Gorgeous look but holy hell that neckline looks uncomfortable

  • Ashleigh

wow. Gorgeous indeed. Wish she’d crack a wee smile…

  • Emily Giovanni

YES. when I saw this today, I thought “I hope TLo gives this a WERQ.”

  • LuisaNL

    Now, THAT’s a WERQ!

  • JauntyJohn

She is fascinating, deeply talented and true to her personal aesthetic.

  • Stunning. Though, I am relived there are no stories of her passing out from heat stroke. I can’t imagine wearing a turtle neck and a suit in late June.

    • Donna Tabor

Some places are so air-conditioned that I feel the need for a turtleneck and suit. It’s ridiculous.

  • sekushinonyanko

I love that she sticks to her aesthetic. Nobody claims that boystars are a bore because they stick to suits and don’t throw on dresses.

  • Synnae

That’s a WERQ and then some. Stylish, classy, strong and very very her. Love it.

Also those pants are hemmed at the perfect length. We all know that is a skill most people here on TLO have not mastered 😉

  • Victor Beiramar Diniz

those choo sandals have been doing the rounds since early spring, haven’t they?

    • Gwyndall

You know a shoe has seen a lot of camera time when *I* can name the designer!

      • H2olovngrl

Alison Williams should have neen wearing them rather than the bugly ones she chose tonwear.

  • VioletFem

Love, love, love Janelle. She looks absolutely perfect here.

    • Patricia Gillett

Haha, just posted the same thing. Should have seen your post first.

      • VioletFem

        It can’t be said enough!

        • ItsDicey

          It really can’t.

  • e jerry powell

I dunno. At some point she needs to start rocking the mod stripey minidresses in public, not just in the music videos.

    • PastryGoddess

I wish she would, but I don’t know if it’s her thing. Her bod is cramazing. And “the booty don’t lie”

      • e jerry powell

        No, no, it don’t…

      • She said at Black Girls Rock! that she wears her “uniform” in honor of her family’s jobs in uniforms (Janelle worked as a maid before her music career took off, her mother was a janitor, her father was a trash man and her step-father worked in the post office). So I get why she doesn’t want to deviate too much from that, but I’d love to see her change it up sometimes too; I don’t think she’d be perceived as disloyal or not “real” for it.

    • And that bob!

  • ohhhhhh. i particularly love the hair. werq indeed.

  • Patricia Gillett

She looks lovely and I have no quibbles except to say that I am getting bored with the repetitive nature of those same damn Jimmy Choos sandals. They’re everywhere.

  • Jessica Freeman

A nice spin on her standard black suit. She looks classy and chic. WERQ.

  • BerlinerNYC

I am just so impressed that she has managed to stay true to her aesthetic while also evolving and not becoming a caricature. Her music, for those who haven’t really listened to it, is brilliant, as is her style. I’m excited to see America gradually catching on.

    • pookiesmom

I discovered her music pretty recently, and she is just AMAZING. ArchAndroid is one of my favorite albums from the past 5 years, for sure. She can do so many different vocal genres, I could’ve sworn at one point she was Ella Fitzgerald. Pure love.

  • julnyes

    Ah that hairstyle is DIVINE.

  • CeeRich

    WERQ indeed. *whitesuitperfectionsnaps*

  • I love her. Q.U.E.E.N. is my summer jam. And the music video was epic – I hope she considers the bob she had in the video when she gets sick of the top-knot pompadour (not that I’m sick of it yet, because it’s fab, but she looked so starkly different with her little clones, I didn’t recognize her at first).

    • e jerry powell

That’s the great thing about wigs, though…

      • Truth! I’m thinking of picking up some myself now that I have the pixie so I can change it up for going out – I want at least one that’s technicolor.

        • e jerry powell

Very Nicki Minaj. Twerk in the mirror!

  • MannahattaMamma

All starlets (plus JLo & Heidi K) please take note: a person can be sexy as hell and still be ALL COVERED UP. I’m no prude, but just please: do we really need all the giblets prancing on the RC, all the time? Methinks not.

  • redhead with tattoos

Ugh. UGH. She makes me want to flop around on the floor and give up on life because I will never, ever, EVER be anywhere NEAR this fierce and gorgeous.

All the snaps, Janelle. ALL THE SNAPS.

  • Sheneve Butler

Just once, I would like to see her hair from the back.

    • Headphone Princess

How come there is never a picture of her hair from the back? My hair is getting long enough that I’ve been able to try to imitate her normal throwback pompadour, but I’ve never been able to tell if it’s even close-I just used my imagination. I would LOVE to see how this looks even from the side, let alone the back.

  • River

    STUNNING. This is perfection.

  • formerlyAnon

Definitely a WERQ. Her head & jewelry are doing 80% of the work.

  • editrixie

I love her SO MUCH that I can forgive the sameness most of the time, and this just is such a fresh way to reinterpret her uniform.

  • SewingSiren

I love her style. This is a great look head to ankle. I’m not in love with the shoes (don’t hate them either) but a high heeled silver wing tip would have been a little sparkier.

  • Anniebet

Those Choos, in the last few months, have probably had more publicity pics than your average celeb. Whatever… she rocks them and the rest of the ensemble. That hair makes me want to pipe in some cream filling and sell it in a bakery.

  • Isabel

She will be in New Orleans this weekend for Essence Fest. Hope that her ‘do holds up. The humidity is powerful. Great for the skin, bad for hair styles.

  • LaSylphide

Love that tailored look with a splash of bling. And the hair rocks.

  • Lilithcat

It’s dreadful! The jacket pulls, the shirt sleeves are too long, the pants look tight (and not in a good way), she’s got an atrociously gaudy and cheap-looking brooch and another atrociously gaudy and cheap-looking necklace at her neck, so no. Just no.

    • surfergirl70

Agreed. The only thing I like is the shoes.

    • Hermione

Also agree. The suit is ill-fitting and the fabric seems cheap and very heavy for summer. The blouse and necklace are horrible.

  • Lucas

I have always liked her androgynous/drag/neo-50s style. I don’t even mind the “repetitiveness” of it, since it is so distinctly her and she looks so good in it. The first time I saw her on TV was when she performed live (at the Grammys a couple years ago I think?) with Bruno Mars and I was like…. WHO is THAT?!?!?! Then I bought her album and loved it.

  • beebee10

Agreed! I don’t go for the android thing, but love her style. She kills it.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

    Love her.

  • Dan_In_NYC

I’m clearly in the minority, but I’m not feeling this one and would love to see her venture into new territory. That said, I can concede it’s well put together.

  • WOW.

  • Who would’ve thought a diamond Facehugger could be so FABULOUS?

  • Love. Now that’s a “I know I look good’ face.

  • Sonja Brisson

I am so thrilled to see non-stripper styling and some elegance and signature style. Long live Ms. Janelle and her grown-up self. (Visualize a curtsey from me here. Hey, that is the correct spelling! Why has it been called out as an error?)

  • Testa Ibsys

nay. she is being choked by a very fabulous tarantula.

  • KtyDA22

I hadn’t heard of Janelle Monae before, so I just went and looked up some of her music.
I think I’m a little bit in love.

  • akprincess72

    She is so lovely!

  • Imasewsure

I usually can’t stand her signature look (just tired of it) but this is fabulous.

  • Danielle L

  • Diego!

She looks like Janet Jackson during the ‘Control’ era. AMAZING ensemble AND HAIR! WERQ WERQ WERQ!

  • GeorgiaMaude

I know, right? That sold it to me. How can you critique a style based on honoring working people? Love her.
