Stephen Amell on the Set of “Arrow”

Posted on July 19, 2013

Stephen and his pecs are back on the job.

“Arrow” star Stephen Amell heads to the set for a night shoot in Vancouver, Canada.

Y’know… looking at these pics, we think we just realized something that kind of annoyed us about the show – which we like in a general sense, but still have catching up to do because we found the mythology to be a little overwhelming for a first season (and this is coming from someone who’s been reading the adventures of Ollie Queen since about 1976 or so). It’s this: it has no style. Look at what he’s wearing. The very definition of generic. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not suggesting plaids and skinny pants for this character. But there’s no real “look” to the show, is there? Then again, as long as he’s shirtless for at least five minutes out of every episode, it doesn’t much matter, does it? Still. Something more than a sea of dark business suits and colorless casual wear would be nice every now and then.

Maybe because he’s a superhero so his day drag has to blend in, be nondescript? Clark Kent was no fashion plate. I dunno, I have an actor friend on this show & I still don’t want it, so what do I know?

It’s – Surprisingly Not Horrible, Rand Ortega . Sometimes it actually lifts itself in the realm of “Brilliant for CW” or even the dizzying heights of “Pretty Darned Good”.

Amell is a real surprise – he’s improved a lot as an actor during the first year, so it’s clear he’s determined to be more than a pretty face and a hunky bod (though he’s both of those, Gods know!). A lot of the younger, mostly female cast is pretty abysmal, but it’s got plenty of action and occasional flashes of intelligent writing.

My wife and niece watch it to see Amell and David Ramsey’s Diggle (the Black guy in the suit right behind Amell in the fourth shot) take their shirts off (Do you prefer Vanilla or Chocolate Beefcake with your television show?), and I watch for Emily Betts Rickards adorable geekgirl Felicity Smoaks (she, Colin Donnell’s Tommy Merlin and Amell are the best younger actors in the cast by far). And, I can appreciate two ripped guys showing off what they can do, too….

Even just reading the name “Stephen Amell” makes me shudder uncontrollably with lust.

caaaant wait. The absence of Arrow from my TV is painful.

  • madscntst

I’d be delirious if he wore Daisy Dukes and skin tight t-shirts. That’s a look, right?

  • Diego!

OMG his neck got wider!!! And shorter! 😛 hahahaha #SausageFriday

Agreed with your comments. He’s suppose to be the son of an industrialist. I know the years on the island were rough but he is suppose to be pretending to be the same reckless lad with the bad wig in the flashbacks. oh wella s you say as long as he’s shirtless…

  • Maybe it’s to give it an any time, any where kind of feel?

Just keep up the half-nekkid workout scenes and I’ll keep watching (know what you mean about the mythology though — I’ve been reading Green Arrow pretty much since there was a Green Arrow and between the changes in the character in the comic books over the years, the character as portrayed on Smallville (who was also really pretty), and the Arrow mythos, sometimes my head hurts when I’m watching the show.)

Now, the best pic of Stephen Amell is him hanging by his arms, shirtless, while the perfectly-suited John Barrowman prowls around him. This year’s big bad is going to have to be pretty amazing to out-do Malcolm Merlyn.

My fav was the double shot of lushesness when Ollie was practicing with his bodyguard John Diggle. I had no idea he was packing all that underneath that boring suit.

I let Felicity carry the style burden. It’s not blow-you-away style, but she’s the only character that doesn’t dress out of the Talbots casual section.

Ollie was always a flashy, stylish guy. I mean, he didn’t become Charcoal Grey Arrow now, did he?

Thanks for this, TLo. Maybe next time you can gift us with pics of Diggle and his arms.

The ads certainly have style: Heath Ledger’s from the Dark Knight; figured the show must be the same.

  • largishbearishAtlish

Remember The Cape? lots of style, even the clunky/charming Greatest American Hero had its own odd style- but you are very right…I have kind of wandered away from this show (I forgot to tape an ep and lost the ‘thread’) but this show does not have that ‘look’ that most shows of this ilk do…good call T’lo.

  • Oliver Queen was totally a dandy (see – his facial hair) so I can see why a “just a dude” version of him is annoying. I am annoyed by his lack of Van Dyck facial hair styling; I suppose it would make him look like a hipster, but c’mon, liberal, fashionable Ollie would totally be some form of hipster today (though it did always make the secret identity thing silly, especially once he became mayor of Star City).

  • Just Me

This is how I would dress my husband…this is how millions of women dress their husbands. Fitted enough to show off his gym time, but not so out there he won’t be able to get dressed by himself if she has a business trip for a week.

I still can’t get over the fact he married crazy Cassandra from ANTM. I love when reality tv and real life converge!

Stephen Arnell has a great physique and is a very attractive man. But his pectoral muscle attachments are high in the center and low on the outside, making them look droopy. This is coupled by the fact that he just does not train the upper pecs enough. Shirt off he’s fine (mostly). But in a clingy top they don’t look so good. This is what I see, more than the drab and styleless clothing.

  • i think the “look” is supposed to be “christopher nolans batman on a tv budget”.
but i agree, its not a very interesting look.

  • Meredith

I’m surprised not every show has “a look”. After reading the Mad Men blogs, I assumed that was the costume designer’s job on every show.

I watch it for Paul Blackthorne. I adore him.
