Selena Gomez in Dolce&Gabbana at the 2013 ESPY Awards

Posted on July 18, 2013

It’s like Selena got news of her vat-sister suddenly grabbing the style spotlight (after years of failing to land on it) and said, “Oh no. That’s not happening. It is ON, sister-bitch!”

Selena Gomez attends the 2013 ESPY Awards held at The Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a Dolce&Gabbana beaded dress paired with Casadei pumps and Neil Lane jewelry.

Dolce&Gabbana Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Sigrid Agren

Okay, that last shot is pure “Taste my beauty, world.” It’s kind of hilarious.

Anyway, we dig the dress. We think the shape and placement of that patch of beading is difficult for 99.99% of the population to pull off, but Miss Selena falls in that tiny group of tiny people who can pull something that waist-obscuring off. We have to admit it looks a bit like a holiday dress, though. If we were in the position to request alterations, we would have had the sleeves either removed completely or turned into little cap sleeves in order to make this into a more summer dress. We also would have advised against black pumps, because they take the look even further from July.

But she does look delicious, we have to say. And she clearly knows it.

Love the dress, like the three quarter sleeves just fine, but I prefer the longer hem. The beading is higher up on the model, too, which looks a little less awkward. Still very pretty.

    • Lucía Gavello

The sleeves and the beading work better with the longer hem, this hem length throws everything out of proportion for me.

    • d4divine

Selena is too short to wear the dress with a longer hem…she would’ve looked like a child playing dressup

      • NOLA_gal

Yes, but just a smidge longer would’ve balanced the look out better. The beading at the middle and the super short skirt make it look super top heavy.

        • d4divine

There is no escaping that the dress is for Fall…her stylist was probably trying to make it look as summer like as possible…this is also where TLo’s cap sleeve idea would come in, and the black shoes ARE NOT helping. Omg, imagine wearing that dress in the hot sun….

  • Clueless_Jock

    Delicious indeed.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

What a stunning girl. Your suggestion of cap sleeves would be perfect. I’d also prefer a few more inches of length.

  • CPK1

she looks great. I wish the lips and nails were not so glaringly red tho

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

My only quibble is that its a bit too much hair. Makes her already large head look really over proportioned. But it is a great overall look for her. A skosh less hair volume and I would have loved it.

    • majorbedhead

Yes, but at least it looks like it’s all her hair. And it is gorgeous. If my hair looked like that, I’d wear it down all the time.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I suppose the sub textual point then is that, when one has such glorious hair, one needn’t try quite so hard to show it.

        • majorbedhead

          True.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I don’t know, if that were my hair, you’d have a hard time getting me to ever down play it. I’d want to walk around Lady Godiva style. It’s gorgeous.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I’m not denying its lovely. It really is amazing hair. Its only that she is so very close to tipping over into Barbieland, with the volume of it..

          • rajf

If it’s a competition with the ‘vat-sister’ then amping up and showing off the volume would be part of the deal. That said, I agree with your assessment. :)

          • demidaemon

If she didn’t have that hair, how would she have been able to dive it up as in the last shot?

    • CPK1

yes, I am with you. It is veering into pageant territory. Beautiful hair but too poofy for the dress and makes her look a bit bobble headed

  • bertkeeter

Like the sleeves…nice to see them instead of the basic sleevless number! Agree on closed pump…. strap would look much lighter!

  • MartyBellerMask

I don’t care how expensive those rings are. Next to the red nails it looks like gaudy Avon costume jewelry.

  • Tess Danesi

She did need to shorten that dress to make it youthful enough for her but it is now a mere inch from from flashing the good china. I really hate the shoes with this dress for July. Makes it feel so heavy.

  • veleri

    red suits her.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Thursday is brought to you by the color Red.

  • formerlyAnon

For some reason, this looks over-polished to me. Perhaps because of the seasonal confusion factor (e.g. looking kinda Holiday Party). She looks fabulous, but leaves me thinking “what an odd way to make a living.” **

**ETA: And if that’s the way my mind is working today, this may not be the day for a fashion/pop culture blog!

  • Carleenml

I thought she was the same girl you’ve been showing all week. Which is why you’re the professionals and I work in a library.

  • Melanie

    Short enough for you?

  • MilaXX

oh look! Another D& G lace dress, how innovative. NOT!
At this point I don’t care if I ever see another one of these. Selena look okay, here, but the black shoes were a big misstep,

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

That’s the classiest and most grown up I think I’ve ever seen her. She looks like a legit starlet here.

  • nannypoo

I think she looks just fine, but I agree about the shoes and the sleeves. She’s young and she has great legs, so the length of the skirt is a good choice for her. My only real complaint is the icky manicure.

  • Alex

Cocker spaniel hair. Needs a ponytail.

  • SugarSnap108

Wish the hem hadn’t been slashed to such a degree. I’m getting a Charo vibe. Cuchi, cuchi.

    Gorgeous dress, gorgeous human, though.

  • sunsetwalker

I think if she cut her hair dramatically she would totally up her fashion game, I feel like her hair is weighing her down,

  • SylviaFowler

    Still looks underage.

  • Lori

I think shortening the dress this much threw off the proportions of the design. She has great legs, so I understand why she wants to show them off, but I think a little more length would have been better. Regardless of the dress length, she should have picked different shoes.

  • f_yeah_marie

It’s a little short, but she does look great. No comment on the cocker spaniel hair?

  • rissa42210

Girlfriend gave it the slut cut. I think it makes sense that she shortened it to better suit her tiny body, but I think she should have left a little more on the hem to make it look symmetrical with the top of the dress. That would have stayed truer to the silhouette while flattering her height. I know it’s hard, but sometimes a girl has to cover her thighs, even if they are fabulous. Show those fabulous arms instead!

  • Denise Alden

Though the ESPYs are probably not in TLo’s wheelhouse, I’d have loved some more analysis on the red carpet. Lots of those athletes have very challenging figures/bodies, and most of them looked spectacular (i.e. LeBron James). Also, the Hamm hosted.

  • stubbornthoughts

Gorgeous. But I really, really HATE the crossed-legs, I-gotta-pee-at-the-end-of-this-red-carpet stance. C’mon ladies, get it together!

  • decormaven

When the sleeves are almost as long as the hem, it might be a good thing to lengthen the hem a bit, especially with that beading accent at the waist. Just an inch or two extra on the hem would have shown that detail to best advantage.

  • pookiesmom

I…don’t like this. It looks like something an elderly prostitute would wear.

  • Imasewsure

Cap sleeves with this shorter length would have been perfect! Are you listening D&G? TLo should be consulted (and compensated) for your new spring line!

  • Alice

“taste my beauty” LOL! You guys have spot on phrases!

  • DTLAFamilies

She needs to take a good four inches off that hair/extensions.

  • Lizzy

It’s too short… there’s no way you sit down in that and not come in contact with things other than your clothes.

  • cowper

She’s too young to look this old.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

She wears red as only a brown-eyed brunette can.

  • Just Me

I think one stylist looked at the pictures of the “other girl” and said a HELL-NO-NOT-WHILE-I-LIVE and went to work on his charge. Somebody is trying to protect their corner.

  • MzzPants

To me, she looks like a child in mommy’s makeup.

  • lobsterlen

I suppose Selena and Heidi go to the same tailor.

Love the original. She ruined the look and now its too short. The symmetry of the bead work is all thrown off.

  • Danielle L

The press-on nails make me SO angry.

  • Synnamin

That hair is terrible, there’s way too much makeup, and I cannot express enough my loathing for lace dresses. I feel like she should be serving cocktails in Vegas.

  • Anniebet

The dress is yummy, the legs are amazing, shoes are meh, hair is juvenile, which is appropriate since she still looks 13.

  • Trisha26

Is there an “inch” rule (like the 5 second rule for dropped food) that says 1 inch above the knee for every year under 30?

  • Sadie-Ann

That hem is making me nervous. I think the lace style edge is making me think it is too short.
