Selena Gomez in Antonio Berardi on Jay Leno

Posted on July 25, 2013

The hair is driving us nuts, but this is fantastic sit-down look:

Selena Gomez makes an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in an Antonio Berardi dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps, an H.Stern Ancient America ring in 18k noble gold with diamonds, and Lana Jewelry White Night earrings in 14k white gold.

Antonio Berardi Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Pauline Hoarau

Visual interest up near the face(which she then obscures with 5 pounds of hair, tsk), a short (but not too short) skirt to show off the legs, and the correct deployment of a kickass pair of black pumps to give the eye something to travel to. Nicely done.

Although it does look a little like a cocktail dress for Spider-Man.

A LOT like a cocktail dress for Spiderman – but it works. She looks great. You know – I hear what you are saying about her hair, but what I wouldn’t do to have a ton of thick long hair like that…

    • Sobaika

      Approximately $1500 in hair extensions.

    • MilaXX

On sale now at your local beauty supply store

    • Karen Belgrad

I never knew that Spiderman and Loretta Lynn had a baby!!!

  • Oooooooh. Spidey as a cross dresser? I LIKE it!
All the hair? Not. So. Much

    • StellaZafella

Let’s send one to Andrew Garfield…or would that be too cruel?

      • I don’t think this is Andrew’s dress.

        • Lanus

IDK, he’s a wee slip of a man, perhaps he’d rock this look.

          • demidaemon

I think it might be a wee bit short for him, as he has an wonderfully long torso.

  • Jessica Freeman

Ok, I am glad the Uncles saw Spiderman on this dress as well. I like it. Girl, get a hair tie and pull the hair back.

  • Latin Buddy

My aunt says that like men, women envy thick, full hair…so why not show it off? I’m a Latin gay man and I show off my thick Latin hair as if I’m J.Lo on the dancefloor. If you have it, why not flaunt it?

    • rajf

In my book, it’s the ratty ends that are an issue.

      • KSuKim

And they get trapped in your armpits. Who needs that?

    • j_anson

Yeah, I think most women would kill for lush wavy hair like that. And I gotta say, as someone with long wavy hair, every time I’ve mentioned cutting it while dating, there has been protest, so I don’t think it’s just a girl thing.

    • melisaurus

That would be cool if it wasn’t ratty looking extensions. And I say that as a semi-hippie chick who likes gross looking hair. Atleast kristen stewart wears her real hair…

  • filmcricket

The clashing lipstick bugs, but otherwise she looks good. She’s starting to look a bit older than 12, too, which is a relief.

    • SylviaFowler

      Yeah, 15.

  • MejoP

Selena’s adorable, but unfortunately she looks a bit like a black widow spider here. And the lipstick is a shade too orange. No problem with the hair, however.

  • Sobaika

Lipstick clashes with the dress. Whose idea was it for orange lips to be a thing?

    • kimmeister

Maybe it’s a delayed reaction to orange being the Pantone color of the year in 2012?

    • VioletFem

I love orange lipstick because it goes well with my skin tone, better than most red lipsticks in fact (I’m a medium/dark skin Black woman). However, it can be a little bit trickier to wear with certain colors. Selena can definitely pull off the orange lipstick, but I agree that it clashes with her current outfit.

      • Sobaika

Darker skin can pull it off beautifully, I agree.

      • Aurumgirl

But it’s not like there’s a shortage of orange-toned deep reds (like chili pepper reds, or persimmon….). Something a little closer to red would have been perfect.

And why yes, I would kill for hair like that (but I’ll be damned if I pay to have it woven in).

        • VioletFem

Orange-toned deep reds can look awesome, but the new orange lipsticks are a nice alternative as well.

          • Aurumgirl

Personally, I love them. And they are very flattering on me, so I’m partial. But it’s not a colour I’d ever wear with a dress that emphatically “red”. More like a colour I’d save for something more earth toned, or the colour of a blue jewel–sapphires or turquoise or topaz.

          • mlle

I like to wear them with leafy greens, both for the complementary colours and because wearing anything vivid with leafy green makes me think of flowers.

    • marlie

The same people who decided that bubblegum pink lips needed to be a thing, too. They all need to just stop.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I’m happy that she’s not wearing the standard stripper-pumps

  • ErmengardeGreen

    Her whole head looks ridiculous.

  • mlle

I love that shade of lipstick (both on her and in general), but it doesn’t work at all here. However, she looks awesome from the neck down.

    • AmeliaEve

Yeah, too many reds going on here.

      • mlle

And they’re from feuding families of red: the lipstick is very warm, whereas the dress has a lot of blue undertones.

      • MilaXX

The lips are fighting the top which are fighting the nails.

      • kimmeister

Not to mention the soles of her Louboutins!

  • gabbilevy

Her hair/makeup choices are always nails on a chalkboard for me. Her fashion gays are doing her much better.

  • MilaXX

She really needs to ease up on the hair extensions. I get distracted when the lips are orange-y red against a red top.

    • largishbearishAtlish

not knowing anything about hair extensions, but that looks like hours worth of time in the make up chair? or do you just stick them in like flowers in a bud vase now?

      • steeg of their own

Getting good extensions takes a LOT of time with a hairdresser. I think I read once that Cheryl Cole spends 4ish hours in a stylists chair for her extensions.

      • MilaXX

It depends really. There are so many different techniques. They can be clip on’s half wigs, sewn in or bonded.

  • She seems awfully together for a young woman. I hope she can keep her momentum in this direction that is all her own. Her best bud is supposedly Taylor Swift; hopefully the two of them can avoid drugs and alcohol.

She looks fantastic. I think all this hair is hers. It would be nice to see it styled differently.

    • marlie

From the very little bit that I know about her and Taylor Swift, one thing that they both seem to have going for them is that they’ve managed to stay relatively clean-cut as they’ve gotten older. And by clean-cut, I mean no sex tapes, DUIs, rehab, etc.

      • demidaemon

I will say that Selena generally seems a lot more fun than the Swift. I always imagine that Taylor would be a bit of a stick in the mud while Selena would go out for a drink, dancing, and karaoke and laugh at herself with you.

  • Showing my age, but she always looks like a kid playing dress-up to me.

    • alyce1213

      But . . . she is.

  • stubbornthoughts

If that hair was okay’d for television, then I’ve been fussing far too much over my own every day hair styles. Thanks for the esteem boost, SG!

  • cowper

Overtly sexual image is getting on my nerves. I saw the video for her latest single, “Come and Get It,” and it just looked so ungraceful (“Look! Let’s throw in some Bollywood!”) and….humorless. That is not how she comes across in interviews. Selena! You don’t have to let the marketing engine package you as this ravenous sex slave!

    • VioletFem

Agreed. Plus she still has the face of a 14 year old, so the overly sexual image she’s trying to push is just way too conflicting.

      • cowper

Yeah, it’s like she’s trying to play a character, but unsuccessfully. Why can’t she just be herself?!

      • SylviaFowler

Yes, if I had even attempted to dress and make up myself at 14 like she does, my family would have said, “You look like a hussy. Go wash your face and change.”

        • Bridget Smith

She’s NOT 14, though. She’s 21. She is just exceptionally young-looking, which must drive her crazy in real life, but which she’ll no doubt appreciate in 20+ years – and which, at the moment, helps sell her to teenagers.

          • demidaemon

I am one of those people. I’m 30 (soon to be 31) and still get asked how old I am at work. I do appreciate it, but it can be a bit annoying.

          • SylviaFowler

            Perception is reality.

  • marlie

I think the dress is a smidgen too short for a sit-down interview, but otherwise I like it a lot. And I really dislike the orange undertones in the lipstick. The hair doesn’t even bother me.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Spider-Man was my first thought too but agreed it is a cute dress. You guys should’ve also shown her wanna-Be Shania Twain performance outfit. Cage boots, hot pants, and an open duster jacket. Man… I feel like a woman…

  • alyce1213

Not crazy about the orange lipstick, but the dress is very cute, and she is at the age where she should show off her long, thick, gorgeous hair. If it covers a bit of the dress, it’s not a big deal for me.

  • Anniebet

Posture… the girl has it, at least for a couple of pictures. Amazing how much sitting or standing up straight can do for an image. Anyway, love the dress, and those are about the classiest black pumps like, evar. The hair is getting to be a bit much. Can you imagine how cute she’d look with a sleek chin length bob?

    • JauntyJohn

Posture, YES. So many of these girls, as my grandmother used to say, ‘schlump along.’
The hair… dear god, does no one in these starlets’ lives own a brush?

      • steeg of their own

Brushes plus lots of extensions can be bad news. You have to be really careful with extensions not to pull them out or get them crooked or hurt your scalp by brushing them too hard, etc.

    • steeg of their own

She seems to have good posture in general actually. It’s refreshing. I wish she’d give lessons to other actresses (Kristen Stewart, Zosia Mamet, I am looking at you and your terrible habits).

  • carpediva

“It’s not like ‘Phil Spiderman.’ He’s a Spider MAN.”

  • Sarah

Eyes or lips, not both, lest you end up looking like a crazy clown hooker #ahem#

  • Imasewsure

I don’t mind her hair in general but the slicked back hair on the model is so much better with this dress. She is a little cutie though

  • NBG

Cute look. I also have to applaud her for showing some restraint and not deploying Pinterest nails that match the Spidey pattern on the dress. You know some starlets totally would have.

  • LaSylphide

Is she wearing a red top and orange lipstick?

  • Sunraya

She looks like a lady when so many starlets look like street walkers – I’ll take it, hair and all.

  • MannahattaMamma

I’m sorry but the girl is wearing a lizard-skin breastplate. Outside of “Game of Thrones,” I’m not sure that’s ever really appropriate.

  • DamH

that’s some killer dress IMO. She would been better w/ less make up.

  • I like it (Selena’s outfit that is)…. I wish she chosen a darker lippy to match the red on her dress.

  • pattie capet

she always dresses well, i like it that she’s so reliable!

  • spider man was my first thought two. in the cap at the top, i thought it actually was a spider man costume, or maybe a t-shirt.

  • MaggieMae

I was a bit dismissive of her at first, but lately she’s giving off a “I’ve got my shit together” vibe. WTG, Selena! Manage that image, girl.

  • sunnycalif

She’s starting to look like a young Marie Osmond.

  • demidaemon

A cocktail dress for Spider-man–I need to see an artistic rendering of this image, stat.

  • What a pretty young woman, massive hair and all. Love the dress.
