Scarlett Johansson in Versace at Comic-Con 2013

Posted on July 22, 2013

LOVE this. It’s our favorite Scar look in a really long time, which isn’t saying much, because she’s a terrible dresser roughly 70% of the time.

Backhanded compliments, darlings! It’s a lost art form. Like using a hand fan.

Scarlett Johansson attends the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” press line during the 2013 San Diego Comic Convention in a Versace floral print dress paired with black pumps.

Versace Resort 2014 Collection/Model: Stephanie Hall

Sorry to be such a GIF about it, but it’s like we always say: a lady’s got to really go for color and boldness at the Con. It’s a requirement. Go loud or go home. The nerds have no time for wishy-washiness in their super-heroines. This looks fantastic on her, but we sure as hell wouldn’t have recommended black pumps. That’s a celebu-style micro-trend that needs to go. Don’t get us wrong; we love a good black pump. We just don’t think they’re the answer to every single outfit’s footwear needs.

Still, she looks great. And maybe the shoes were the one concession to her character, Black Widow. What do the Precious Unborn Fawns think of her SJP-style eyeliner here?

    • Mary Lauer

I think that makeup makes her look nothing like ScarJo usually looks. Not sure if that is a positive or a negative. Also, the dress is a skosh tight in the (amazingly tiny I am sure!) midsection.

    • NBG

Love this dress on her. So very summery but still “I work my ass off in the gym everyday to play a superhero” and thus, perfect for Comic Com

Let us not speak of the shoes.

    • SewingSiren

Agree on all points. The black pumps would be okay on an ordinary person, but surely she can afford to have a better match.

      • Jessica Freeman

Even I have a better pair of shoes than black pumps to wear with that dress…..

    • CeeQ

The eyeliner works for me, it gives her that edgy look without veering into drag queen. That dress is lovely and I am all kinds of in lust with it but yes, the shoes were not a good choice. Just makes the look all heavy.

    • Silly Grrl

<—uses a hand fan. I'm a hot bitch. I do think this is cute, but the black shoes don't go at all.

      • Cautiously Pessimistic

I was going to say, if anyone thinks hand fans are a lost art, they’ve never been inside an old church in August.

        • Silly Grrl

Well, I haven’t been inside a church much ever. I just decided it was too damn hot for me to not fan myself. Also, fuck covering my fleshy upper arms. BINGO WING POWER.

          • Cautiously Pessimistic

I went to a wedding in suburban Chicago a couple summers ago, and it really should have been a sign that there was a basket of fans set out on a table in the foyer. Beautiful church, but I’d have preferred air conditioning.

            • Silly Grrl

Oh hell naw! I gotta pretty up to come to your wedding and you can’t even have the courtesy to have AC? Nope.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

I have a small hand fan in my bag. Works great on the hot subway platforms to keep me from passing out.

I like the eyeliner on her and the dress, the shoes are too black for that dress.

    • random_poster

Great look for her, and I like the eyeliner.

    • gabbilevy

Coworkers and I were just talking about her Jersey girl makeup job in “Don Jon,” and this feels a little like that, but not trashy. She can get away with inner-eye liner, because unlike SJP, she doesn’t have small, age-squinted eyes.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Actually, what I like most is the light in her eyes and sparkle in her personality. She’s been showing up looking stoned and/or bored way too often. Face and hair are fabulous, dress is lovely. Let’s pretend she wore better shoes and call this a solid win.

      • Rhonda Shore

She looks great. But more importantly, what is going on with that model’s arse? Is it really shaped like that or is it a camera angle? Or is it a support garment, what is it called, and where does one buy it???

        • Domo_Konnichiwa

If you google ass lifters, your search will be short and sweet.

          • Rhonda Shore

ha ha…truth is…i’m not wild about confining undergarments, but the model’s butt is wondrous!!!

    • LuisaNL

The shoes don’t go, dislike the eyeliner and the hair is meh. It’s a cute dress and I like the colors but don’t love the print.
I don’t know, TLo, I think this is an out for me. Even if it’s better than usual (which it totally is, ScarJo!)

    • housefulofboys

Such a pretty dress and she looks kind of happy and natural for a change. BUT and it’s more than a quibble, HATE the raccoon eyeliner on her very pale face, it’s all I could see peering out at me. And, she couldn’t find a better shoe than black patent leather pumps? Puhleeze.

    • elemspbee

oh so close to a WERQ. She looks gorgeous in the dress. Her skin–perfection.

    • theblondette

Shoes are making me wince on a 31C (88F) day, and I imagine it’s far hotter there… Sandal, girl, sandal. Still, it’s a cute dress.

    • ceceliadid

A black sandal would have made more sense. The black balances the strong eye, but the pump is too heavy.

    • Diego!

This is not working for me… it looks like an outfit a housewife would use to do the garden or go to a local market to buy food. Sorry, it´s an OUT to me.

    • misstressofsylar

she and Robin Scherbatsky looked amazing on this panel. hope T-Lo would also feature Robin

    • carnush

The eyeliner and the heels belong with a different dress entirely.

      • kimmeister

Exactly this. She pulls off the SJP eyeliner well because she has big eyes. Such dark and staid shoes give me a sad when paired with such a light floral dress.

    • YoungSally

I like how the model has the nifty trick of being two-dimensional in her middle – while remaining fully three-D on the top and bottom.

    • TigerLaverada

I quite like the eye makeup, but I tend to like strong eye makeup in general, bright blue eye shadow excepted. The dress looks remarkably like a yellow linen sheath dress I made at age 15, except that one had the slit in the back — I think it was a McCall’s pattern. Looks good on her, though, despite it’s ordinariness. She, like Jennifer Lawrence, has got a truly rockin’ bod.

    • Nancer

Sorry, guys, I like the dress but I saw it in some other pictures and it is way too tight. It was pulling and bunching on her when she moved – not a good look. If only it was 1/2 size bigger!

    • cmb123

Dress is ill fitting and the shoes are awful. Love the color and the face though

    • RedRaven617

I like her eye make up. Hate the shoes. I think a low heel sandal would have been a better choice. And a more comfortable choice if she was going to walk around.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Don’t like her eyeliner. at. all. But the dress is cute as hell!

    • Trisha26

The dress is way too tight, shoes are wrong, eye-makeup is wrong, hair is making me sad. Otherwise, cute! LOL!

    • majorbedhead

I can’t believe that’s a Versace dress. It’s so cute. Almost demure. A skosh too tight thru the midsection, though, and the pumps are all wrong. Still. A cute Versace. Who’da thunk it?

      • DuBey2

I, too, had to check my contact lenses when I read “Versace”. However, I think the tightness kind of keeps it from being to “ladies tea party”, and, after all, the ComicCon fans need SOMEthing to make their hearts race! I also kind of like the black pumps (w/toe cleavage) to edge it up, or, as TLo suggested, give a nod to her Black Widow character. As to the makeup, maybe I am the only one, but to me, Scarlet can look like many different women, depending on the angle she’s shot at, her makeup and hair… that probably makes her very versatile for the movies. At least twice, we’ve been halfway through a film when I asked my husband “who is that actress?” or “Where is Scarlet J?” because she looks so changeable to me. I personally loved her best in The Island, and so I guess I’m always looking for her to be styled in that way (and Blonde, Very Blonde).

    • Jessica Freeman

I wished it fit better, but for ScarJo this is down right fantastic. I don’t like the heavy liner, or the black pumps. I still don’t like her as a blonde.

    • merciblahblah

I love it, if only because the print on that dress reminds me of the wallpaper in my grandma’s spare bedroom that I used to stay in as a kid. Oh, sure, she looks pretty and all, but I REALLY love that it makes me nostalgic for the days I listened to the Eagles on an old record player and read some of my aunt’s dirty books that I found in the closet.

Wow – I have officially derailed on this comment.

    • Jeremiah Capacillo

      Wow the model’s gorgeous.

    • mjude

she looks good, adorable really, but agree about the shoes.

    • MilaXX

I think the eyeliner is a bit heavy for that dress and I hate the black pump with such a summery dress. A sandal or even a white pump would have been better.

    • mmebam

I am categorically against heels at a convention unless you are doing the 30 minutes to one hour strut in your awesome costume for photos.

    • Emily Giovanni

Pretty dress, but it looks so tight and uncomfortable. When I am an A-list actress, I will be extremely stylish but also able to sit down at a moment’s notice.

    • Tatiana Luján

The eye makeup matches the pumps and neither of them are related to the dress.

    • Judy_J

Cute dress, hate the shoes, not a fan of the SJP eyeliner on anyone, including SJP.

    • ashtangajunkie

I like the eyeliner, the dress, and the pumps. I just don’t like them together. Pumps + eyeliner + less summery dress = yes. As it is, the eyeliner and the pumps look too heavy for such a pretty, summery dress.

      • MilaXX

yes, wear these shoes and face in the fall, with a Fall dress and it’s a keeper.

    • SugarSnap108

Pretty dress, but sandwiching it between heavy black eyeliner and black pumps was not a good idea.

    • Danielle L

I really do love this, and even the hair looks amaze.

    • julnyes

The eyeliner reminds me of comic book art, so venue appropriate?

    • marlie

The default is either silly putty pumps or black pumps. I guess the head has addled all of the stylists’ brains.

      • demidaemon

I’d rather see the black pumps than silly putty, so I’m okay with her choice here.

    • Little_Olive

The pumps are so wrong it makes me not love the rest; especially considering there is an eyeliner-pump mutual reference thing that has the dress wondering what the hell it is doing there.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I hate her eyeliner so much – maybe she was going for a Margot Tenenbaum sweet/dark thing, but it doesn’t work even slightly – it pains me, the black is so mismatched.

    • hughman

      I love it.

“And I stepped on the ping-pong ball! I just squashed it to bits. And then Bunny and I ran to the closet of the game room to get another ping-pong ball and the closet was locked! Imagine?”

      • stellamaris73

Top drawer comment of the day!

      • decormaven

        Bless you! Great recall.

    • conniemd

Will somebody please feed the model on this dress before she she shrinks her inner organs for lack of room in the midsection. You do need a middle to hold your stomach, kidneys, liver, etc.

As to Scarlett, love the dress, the hair is a bit meh.

    • decormaven

This fabric is very vintage looking- i can see a sleeveless Ship to Shore shirt with a Peter Pan collar made up in this selection. Minor infraction on the shoe choice, but still a solid win. It’s a fun, bright look for her.

    • Judy_S

I was startled by the thumbnail. She looks about 10 years younger. If that’s the eyeliner, go for it.

      • sweetestsith

I think its the eyeliner + hair. I don’t generally think she’s very pretty, but she looks REALLY good here. The bright blond (but not brassy) hair looks amazing on her, so much better than the mousy color and questionable (for her) retro hair styles.

Hate the shoes with it though. This would have been an excellent time for some beautiful summer sandals!

    • MzzPants

All I see is Fruity Pebbles.

    • Anathema_Device

This is one of the few times I would endorse a nude pump. Other than the shoes, this is all fantastic.

P.S. I love the use of GIF as the new version of “broken record.”

    • Just Me

She looks good. I like the heavy eye this time. It keeps the dress from looking too sweet, which would seem strange on her.

    • msdamselfly

The eyeliner does not suit that soft hairstyle and dress

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I think, given the venue and flashbulbs, the heavy eyeliner + subdued lip color was a good move, because it pulls focus to her face and especially to her eyes. Against the busy backdrop(s) and in the crowds, everyone will know instantly where to look.

    • Tracy_Flick

This is one of the only times I’ve ever been in favor of the heavy eyeliner. It gives it a 60s vibe with the dress, the pale lip, and the soft hair.

    • Erica Woods Tucker

I have to say…I’m tired of seeing everyone’s toe cleavage. It’s sort of freaky. I know everyone needs a heel, but the cleavage leaves me a little nauseous.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/marcadler Marc

“we love a good black pump” haha

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I’m making up a whole back story for how she wound up in those shoes and that dress. I think it will have to involve Mountain Dew, ninjas and a box set of Star Trek, Next Generation.

    • LaSylphide

Cute dress, but why oh why those shoes with it. Is there a reason?

    • RuthGo

Love the dress. Don’t like the shoes with it. The eyeliner makes her look like Connie Britton, I don’t know why.

      • ShaoLinKitten

She totally does look like Connie Britton here. The print is something Connie would wear, and it’s totally Connie’s hair.

    • ballerinawithagun

Hate the black, both the eyeliner and the pumps. Love the dress, but I could easily make it or probably find it on Etsy. Those buttons look like they’re from the children’s button section at JoAnn’s.

    • nannypoo

I like her with this makeup. There’s gobs of it, but it looks good on her. I also like her hair. Hate the shoes, of course, and the dress is too tight

    • teensmom99

NO! She is not the Lily Pullitzer type.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Don’t care for the pumps, the eyeliner is a mistake, her hair looks sad, and her bust looks squished.

    • crash1212

Dress is cute, if venue inappropriate. Hair, make-up and shoes are big misses for me.

    • PrunellaV

The eye makeup works on her because her eyes are big enough to handle it. SJP’s aren’t. Unless she’s deliberately going for the cigarette burn-hole look. (Kudos to whoever came up with that!)

    • Shawn EH

She’s hot but classy. Just like Black Widow. She looks chic.

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

Love the dress. The eyeliner’s a little harsh, but better on her than on SJP.

    • Linzenberg

And I just got a fabulous mental image of Uncle T and Uncle Lo lazily waving hand fans in intricate semaphore as they judge a parade of celebrities.

Oh, uh, ScarJo? I dunno, the fabric is a little 70s teenaged girl sheets for me. Whatever. I just want TLo and fans.

      • mhleta

Yes! While sitting in Peacock chairs and sipping mint juleps!

    • Anniebet

Meh, she should have used this occasion to go crazy. This is pretty darned tame for Comic Con. Black shiny pumps are the shoe equivalent of little old ladies with bubble hair.

    • DamH

I thought it was Dreama Walker (Don’t trust the B in apartment 23′s June)

    • MrsBug

I swear by all that is holy that my grandmother, an amazing seamstress, made me a bathing suit when I was 12 with this exact pattern. Of course, it being the 80s and me being 12, the pattern mortified me and screamed “Marsha Brady.”

    • mhleta

This print actually looks very Liberty of London, ie J. Crew ca. 2010. It’s a bit snug too, bunching at the waist such as it is. I do like her in color, though, and I agree, it’s an improvement over her usual struggles.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

love the dress, but the shoes are boringly awful and the eyeliner, no. when eyes are heavily lined in a continuous line all around, they tend to look smaller, like little pig eyes. like renee zelwigger.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Exactly about the pumps. It’s a lovely summer dress. Where are the lovely summer shoes?

    • guest2visits

Very pretty dress for her, but I thought the eye make-up was for a different outfit altogether. The shoes could have been a million other prettier things, too.
