Sarah Michelle Gellar in Izmaylova at the CW, CBS and Showtime TCA Party

Posted on July 31, 2013

Buffy is serving up dominatrix-executive realness.

The Crazy Ones” star Sarah Michelle Gellar attends the CW, CBS and Showtime 2013 Summer TCA Party in Beverly Hills, California in an Izmaylova dress paired with Jimmy Choo pumps and Dana Rebecca Designs jewelry.

Jimmy Choo Black Suede Studded Pointy Toe Pump

This is a pretty great look all-around, but for an industry event like this, we’re thinking it might’ve been a good idea to tone down the severity. For us that means softer hair, which is not a hard call to make in this instance because the hairstyle she’s got is downright awful. That’s clearly a walking-away dress but that is so NOT walking-away hair. And we’ll just say it: it ages her. Moving down, we’d switch out almost all the jewelry for simpler pieces; diamonds and white gold or silver, very understated. And then to bottom it all off, we’d toss the (admittedly fabulous) pumps and put her in something with an open toe or back. If we really wanted to be trendy about it, we’d put her in white shoes, but we’d be terribly conflicted about that. Whatever the choices, she’s got a good dress there but needs to soften everything else considerably, including the makeup.

We’re trying to picture her as Robin Williams’ daughter in her new show and having a really hard time with it. Sure, she’s kind of naturally brittle and fast-talking, but we’re thinking it’s gonna be a hard sell for the audience.

The make up and hair is aging her badly. This had so much potential.

    • GorgeousThings

‘Zackly! She looks about 10 years older thanks to the hair/makeup. Yikes! Fire your stylist, girl – you’re much better than that!

      • Louise Bryan

        Glenn Close realness.

      • Kristin McNamara

Her hair looks like what I call “saltwater hair”. As in…. You know how sticky and knotty your hair gets after swimming in the ocean, and then you brush it off your face with a towel? This is what that looks like when it’s dry an hour later.

        • Amber J

It really does look like that.

I also remember the late 90s, when “beach hair” was something that was in magazines everywhere as a “how to do” look.

      • Amber J

I actually looked up her age because she looks like she’s in her mid-40s in these pictures. She’s only 4 years older than me. Dang, that is some bad hair/makeup.

  • marlie

I love the dress, but I wish she’d worn different shoes. And her hair and makeup are a little harsh.

ETA: BUT… so happy to see Buffy back on TV!

    • majorbedhead

Yes, me too, although I really hope it’s better than that show she had a year or two ago, whose name I’ve forgotten, but began with an R, I think. Man, that was bad.

      • marlie

Heh, I don’t even remember what it was.

        • barbarienne

Yes, I am ashamed that I knew this.

          • marlie

That’s right. She played twins. I watched the first couple of episodes before I lost interest.

  • Nancer

    I don’t care, LOVE her!

  • Buffy needs to stake whoever did her hair and make up. Harsh and so very unflattering.

  • MilaXX

The hair & face are far too severe and aging. She could lose all the bracelets. This show has stinker written all over it. That probably means I’ll be pleasantly surprised and it will be a hit.

  • Diego!

I luv huh!!!!! <3 I haven't seen her in ages! She surely did age well!!! But that hair is dreadful and her make up is so so. Apart from that, she is rocking that dominatrix dress.

  • anotherkate

That’s not a great makeup job, also. Looks like she got a tan and her makeup artist didn’t have the next shade darker on hand.

  • sagecreek

I would love to see this new show succeed, but the initial pieces I’ve seen are not promising. They’re too much in awe of Robin Williams, and you know what happens when no one is around to rein him in…he goes all manic and it’s not good.

Still…I hope it works! Ringer was just awful.

    • majorbedhead

Ringer! That’s it. God, yeah, that was depressing to watch. I couldn’t finish the season, even WITH Buffy and Horatio Hornblower.

      • WendyD

Here, here! That they managed to squander both of them was a complete waste!

  • Shawn EH

She looks more like Erica Kane Jr. all the time!

  • Yulie29

Her hair color is closer to Spike’s than to Buffy’s. Leave the lighter shades to James Marsters, dear.

    • iheartbuffy

      LOLOLOLOL SPOT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MiracleMaxie

At first glance I thought this was Patti LuPone.

    • Shawn EH

      No you didn’t!

  • Vanja

“Robin Williams’ daughter in her new show and having a really hard time

She probably takes after her mum.

    • turtleemily

Those of us with super-high arches also wish our arches actually touched the sole since it would mean much less back pain. 🙁

      • Vanja

I have them myself and when my ship sails in the first thing I’ll buy, will be gorgeous custom fitted shoes.

  • Scoobydrew

I think that it will be a hard sell for the audience as well … she’s always going to be beloved Buffy to a big part of the world, which is a great thing considering the awesomeness of all things Buffy, however as an actress that has to be challenging.

I hope it does well, and as with all things Buff , I’ll tun in … I watched that Ringer show for way too long because of beloved Buffy.

    • iheartbuffy

yeah. me too. I want those 22 hours of my life back.

  • NBG

Hair and makeup are terribly aging. Whoever decided on that color and gave her that raggedy updo deserves a Buffy-era spin kick.

    Ummmm…love the shoes?

  • kalisa

Is SMG 50? When did she turn 50?

    • iheartbuffy

I blame her nose job or whatever other not so great and unnecessary plastic surgery she’s bad. The make up does NOT help.

      • Goldie

Unless she’s gotten botox, no plastic surgery. She’s still got the funny little bump at the end of her nose that she did when she was Buffy. I suspect no botox either though, I can detect the faint hint of lines in her forehead and around her eyes.

        • iheartbuffy

watching Ringer, it really really looks like she’s had something done, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. She doesn’t exactly look like herself anymore, sort of like whatever the heck Portia de Rossi did to herself. Nothing huge but enough for me to raise my eyebrows

          • Goldie

Well, she has lost most of the softness in her face. But, age and two small children can do that to you.

        • iheartbuffy

AH! I figured it out…. I think – she’s definitely had botox, but around her mouth and cheeks. Or collagen or something to that effect. Her smile definitely isn’t as big as it used to be

    • ampg

I took one look at these pictures and said, “Fifty and Fabulous!”

      She’s 36.

  • Imasewsure

Kind of predicting that the new show is going to stink in spite of the star power…. hair is awful… dress would be fine with some fun shoes (although I do love those pumps in general)

  • NoveltyRocker

That’s an expensive looking thumb ring.

  • sweet_potato

    What’s up with that hair?

  • AnnPopovic

I’m excited for the new show; Williams is sober and if anyone can get him to sit down and shut up for a second, it’s Buffy…so I’ll tune in. Nanu Nanu, yeah?

  • Yeah, that’s not the hair you want to debut at an event for “The Crazy Ones.”

  • iheartbuffy

OH GURL, your nose job is SIN. And you have such good hair… at least for 7 seasons of BtVS and sort of in Ringer. Welcome back to the spotlight, pull your shit together. And I like your dress but it’s kinda too big. And give this Whedonversefangurl your shoes. Please.

    • Hermione

Actually, I don’t think she’s had a nose job. That looks like the “distinctive” nose she’s had since Buffy and before.

      • Goldie

My thoughts too. Her face has lost the roundness it had when she was younger but the nose is the same.

  • largishbearishAtlish

I kept wondering if she has had ‘work’ done? the cheeks look a bit severe, but it might just be the outfit- it DOES age her, and makes her (to me) look more brittle… lighten it up…. we want ‘funny, happy’….

  • decormaven

I’m getting a Lana Turner vibe, circa 1958. This look is aging her. Bad stylist!

  • silaria

*stares* I just… I don’t see Buffy at all. Admitted, I’m terrible with faces, but she looks like a completely different person.

    • iheartbuffy

      for reaaallllzzzzz

  • dashransome

She really needs a good colorist to work on her hair. Whatever shade its been bleached is so light that it reads gray. She needs some more golden tones or something.

  • majorbedhead

It seems like she’s really trying to disassociate herself with her Buffy look, which is valid, but that look really suited her. There’s got to be a way to have her read grown-up Buffy. This looks like Buffy right before she broke free of the grave.

I can understand an actress having a hard time moving on from such an iconic role, especially when, as I understand it, she was heartily sick of Buffy by the time it was done. This, however, does not seem to be the way to do it.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Actually, I like the outfit and the shoes, but I totally agree about the hair. Something sleek and very “Veronica Lake” would have been perfect with this look.

  • iheartbuffy

  • barbarienne

My first thought was that she was trying to get the hair to live up to the title of the show. Holy crap, whoever did that to her hair should be shot. The makeup person should only be beaten, but harshly.

Even the dress is kind of aging, but it could be fine if the accessories and hair/makeup were youthful and fresh. Girl, I know you’re a mom and all, but you’re not the mom of a 30-year-old. Fire your people and get new people.

  • bertkeeter

    Looks dated…No punch….

  • chowwander

More like Robert Palmer video background girl realness.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I wasn’t prepared to see Buffy look this old and severe.

  • quiltrx

She looks really harsh. The hair is making her naturally-a-bit-pointy face look really jagged. I agree, too much ‘severe’ in one package.
LOVE those shoes! And the dress isn’t bad.

  • formerlyAnon

Hair & makeup tragically not good. LOVE the shoes. In an ideal world she’d get the head fixed and then replace everything between it and the pumps to work better with the pumps.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Oh, Buffy! This is no bueno! She is only 36. The hair has got to go.

  • MrsBug

The minute you said “Dominatrix-Executive”, this is the first thing that came to mind: the inestimable Lucy Liu

  • hellkell

What’s up with all the body glitter lately? No need to take “poledance” so literally.

  • Danielle L

Has she looked this old for a while? Or is it just the hair and makeup? I suddenly feel ancient.

  • librarygrrl64

Can we please ban thumb rings, especially bedazzled ones?

  • Sophia Vaccaro

I like the jewelry, but agree about the makeup. Still, i can’t complain, love her, listened to the “Once More, With Feeling” album today, actually.

  • gefeylich

But…Bob Benson and Old Christine’s brother Matthew are also on that show! I will watch it just for them, and also because I still have a soft spot for Buffy. She may look like someone’s well-put-together mom here, but I know she can override the horror that is Robin Williams.

And I love those pumps – like starry skies for the feet.

  • Crystal

I just wish she weren’t SO BLONDE and SO TAN.
