Nicki Minaj For Marie Claire Magazine

Posted on July 10, 2013

Darlings, a video game version of Miss Nicki graces the August cover of Marie Claire:

Nicki Minaj covers the August 2013 issue of Marie Claire magazine in a Fausto Puglisi dress from the Fall 2013 collection photographed by Saitoshi Saikusa.

Now that we think about it, there really should be a video game version of Nicki, shouldn’t there?

On the most important message she’d like young women to take away from her music: “Don’t lose the fun side of you, the part of you that fantasized and had a great imagination, but don’t ever get complacent because there’s always someone gunning to take your spot. You’ve got to work like it’s your first day on the job every day. That’s what I do: Work hard, laugh later. I just don’t want people to think that you can get this any other way. You can’t get it with a pretty little smile. You have to put the work in, and that goes for anything you want to do.”

On what pisses her off instantly: “People who don’t own up to their mistakes. They’ll make every excuse in the book, as opposed to just saying, ‘Damn, yeah, I fucked up.’”

Okay, that’s fierce.

      Bringin’ it, totally.

    • Jennifer Swegler

If I’m really good this year, can I please have those Nicholas Kirkwood shoes in a size 9.5 US? Shoe LUST over here.

Oh, and she does look fierce in that second shot. The cover shot simply makes me hum “I’m a Little Teapot” under my breath.

      • SRQkitten

“I’m a little teapot” – Jennifer that’s priceless, now I can’t undo that when I see this picture! And honestly, that’s the best i think I’ve seen here (but will own up to not looking at her most times cause her look is often too out there for me)

      • SugarSnap108

Those shoes are fantastic. I’d break at least one limb trying to walk in them, but I’d still try.

    • jelenawoehr

She looks fantastic and the full interview really shows how she personally understands the fan community that’s sprung up around her. Nicki knows what she’s doing. She and Gaga are the two master brand-builders and community managers in pop music who seem to me to really be personally managing their character design and development, not leaving it to a staff/label. This latest reinvention as “edgy bombshell” seems to follow the rumors that she intends to drop the elaborate self-parody and release a serious hip-hop album next year… can’t wait, it’s about time there was a female artist in Jay’s lane.

      • SpillinTea

*Giggle* Did you say Nicki Minaj…in Jay’s lane? *ROFL* As far as image, yes, Nicki is on POINT with her branding. But as far as actual talent on the mic? Nahhh sis. The only woman who had a chance was Azealia, and she went nuts.

        • jelenawoehr

I don’t know, call me crazy, but I think the MC we saw on Monster is still in there. Face it, nobody would have bought her debut album if she hadn’t come out of the gate with a crazy gimmick in her first major label release, because there wasn’t an existing market interested in a female rapper in the Jay mold. She may release total junk and prove me wrong, but I suspect she knows how the fame thing works and she’s intentionally set herself up as a gimmick-propelled image-over-talent Barbie just to set the stage to release the album she REALLY wanted to make and set up critics to get all worked up in excitement over getting to be all contrarian and counter-counter-culture with “I never thought I’d say it, but Nicki Minaj just dropped the rap album of the year” reviews. The only thing critics love more than tearing down the artist everyone else loves is boosting up an artist they used to hate — gives them that desperately craved “so legit s/he’s willing to change past opinions for the sake of realness” reputation.

Man I have spent WA-HEY too much time on this theory.

          • SpillinTea

Oh no doubt she has talent like she showed on Monster, but I just can’t see her putting out an album of that level. The last fem-cee to do that was Lil Kim and we saw what happened to her…
For the sake of women in hip hop, I DO hope Nicki comes with something legendary, but I’m not holding my breath. Especially since part of her shine is getting siphoned off by that terrible (but SICKENING looking) Iggy Azelia.

            • jelenawoehr

Azelia has some talent and I’m not mad at her for getting famous by dating A$AP, you do what you gotta do… but I think having some legit competition from a younger, buzz-generating artist will help push Nick to put out what she’s really capable of. Especially when she seems to actually be taking the time a serious album needs for once. I mean sure she shot a few scenes in a movie, she’s doing features on other people’s albums, and she has the clothing line, but her major commitment is this next album and she’s not hurrying to do something gimmicky like releasing it the same day as her Kmart collection. That tells me she’s actually working on getting it right.

            • SpillinTea

This is why I love T&L. You never know when you’ll find a Bitter Kitten hiphop head and the like :)

            • jelenawoehr

Exactly! Nice to run into you :) such an interesting mix of commenters here, and somehow it’s the only celeb blog where everyone is intelligent and keeps it snarky, not downright MEAN.

        • muzan-e

Insofar as raw talent on a mic? Jean Grae. The woman kills me. But the branding’s not there and, so far as I know, never has been.

Now I’ll have to hunt down some Azealia. I love finding new recommends here! *g*

          • SpillinTea

Yassssss! or Bahamadia, Rah Digga, Mia X, Rocky Rivera, or any of the other slept-on ladies who can rock a mic :)

            • nancymae

Am I wrong to miss Missy Elliott?

            • SpillinTea

No ma’am! I’m still waiting on a Missy comeback. Especially since the Eve one was a flop. :(

        • nancymae

Wow! I loved reading this BK conversation. Azelia’s 212 was tha truth until she lost her flipping mind. Jean Grae and Bahamadia… WHAT?! As for Iggy, I will have to check her out… Thanks for the tip.

    • d4divine

I love the 2nd shot outfit, but her neck is not long enough for that choker and she looks like she is straining to appear longer, which she probably is…

    • HM3

I’m jarred by how…normal she looks on the cover. Is it the hair? Is it that her girls aren’t pushed up to her chin? Is it just the PhotoShop? Weird. But I like it.

      • Jessica Freeman

Its also because she doesn’t have her eyes bulging wide open.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Now *this* Nicki I could like. There’s life in her eyes and intelligence in her sound bites. More of this please Ms. Minaj.

    • Randy Noak

Is it me or is that cover shot super over-exposed? There’s so much shine bouncing off the side of her face, I need sunglasses.

    • Jonquil

Dammit. I just can’t help but like her.

    • Monzerrat Ontiveros

She has been working on improve her style, now she needs a new makeup artist and/or a plastic surgeon, she needs to do something with that face!!!

      • VioletFem

She does NOT need a plastic surgeon.

        • Monzerrat Ontiveros

maybe, but she can do better than that with the makeup at least…

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Clearly. I mean what *is* she thinking leaving the house with that perfect nose, gorgeous cheek bones, full, lush lips and symmetrical jaw line? Hideous. Elephant Man kind of stuff here.

And for the record, even if she didn’t have perfectly lovely features, to say that she is need of plastic surgery is pretty damn rude.

        • Monzerrat Ontiveros

Ok, just don’t over react, nowadays nobody can say that some person in ugly, i get that, and i said that because she has done a lot of surgeries before.

        • demidaemon

I agree with annabelle. Anyways, Nicki takes her make-up cues from drag queens, and those bitches know exactly how to beat a face.

    • Diego!

      Which version wears her hair?

    • Clueless_Jock

You know, Nina would look good in these outfits.

    • lrober03

Two Fausto Puglisi dresses in one day.

      • conniemd

My first thought was she stole the medals from that other dress. They look really strange on plaid to me.

    • anotherkate

Love her. She looks tall as heck in the second shot.

    • ohayayay

Video game Nicki would battle video game Mariah. Mariah would use her superpower glass-shattering upper range scream, while Nicki would stomp around in her Roman alter ego.

      Nicki wins, obvs.

      • MilaXX

Mariah has become far too much of a joke with her diva-ness. Her husband got dragged on twitter last night for trying to shade Beyonce.

        • kimmeister

I felt embarrassed for her when I saw the video for #Beautiful (after rolling eyes at the name of the song).

        • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

          Oooh. What did Nick say?

          • MilaXX

Something about Beyonce lipsynching. Seriously google it. The Beyhive went in!

    • decormaven

She definitely understands the concept of “working it.” For a not-tall person, she’s working every bit of her height. Kudos.

    • cowper

I feel like the cover is trying to make her look…white. She looks European, with those flat angular planes of her face, pale, pale skin tone and white-blonde hair. Haven’t we come a little further than this?

      • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

That’s my only critique. I think she looks fantastic, but I wish they would have turned the lights down a little and gone easier on the photoshop. I love her. Not a huge fan of her music, but she is wicked smart.

    • MilaXX

There’s a clip out there of Nicki talking about the differences between being a woman who speaks her mind and a man who speaks her mind that made me like her more than ever. These are really great pictures of her.

      • Jaeda Laurez

“I’d be drinking pickle juice right now.”

        • MilaXX

          YES!!!

        • SpillinTea

She went from my irrational hate list to “OK…I like her (but not her music)” with that one line.

      • formerlyAnon

I like her because she still seems to be having fun when I hear her interviewed or see her on something, and because I’ve heard from young friends who’ve worked her shows that she treats people working in even the lowest capacity with friendliness and respect. (I realize that their experience – a handful of shows in I think 4 cities over maybe 8 or 10 days is limited. But still, there are those about whom even that cannot be said.)

      • shorty j

I read somewhere that her whole over-the-top drag queen persona was basically a shot at sexism in the music industry. And that’s pretty much why I love her.

    • mjude

she really is pretty without all the garbage she normally wears.

    • SewingSiren

      Cute as a CareBear.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Isn’t Nicki Minaj already a video game version of Nicki Minaj?

    • Synnae

Wow- that second picture is fierce. Love that dress and those shoes!

    • Kate Andrews

Great pics! Also, you know how I’d answer “How to turn friends with benefits into something more”? By getting pregnant. (Sorry!)

      • demidaemon

Heh. Though problematic for certain couples (I’m thinking M/M and F/F, but obviously that is not this mag’s considered audience), and questionable for everyone else.

    • formerlyAnon

      Yes.

    • filmcricket

So nice to hear someone say you have to work hard to get success. People who default to “I just got lucky” irritate me sometimes, because – yeah, for sure, luck plays a part, but that’s the wrong message to send to people who want to emulate you. Most of the luck belongs to the circumstances of one’s birth (talented, pretty, intelligent, rich, Western, whatever) and the ones who succeed are those who work really hard at using all that luck to make something of themselves. It’s not a surprise that she didn’t last long on AI, which is like the poster child for people who just want to be “discovered” rather than make a true effort.

Sorry, rant over. Love the cover; she looks disturbingly neck-less in the 2nd photo & the poses are too similar to my eyes, but she is owning that dress.

    • kimmeister

Why did they Photoshop out the line where the two red walls meet in the second shot???

      • jelenawoehr

It was probably coming out of her head right where the part in that wig is.

    • JasmineAM

      Nope, still hate her.

    • bravobravp

my god could they white wash her anymore?
