Kristen Wiig in Viktor & Rolf at the “Girl Most Likely” Screening

Posted on July 16, 2013

Once again, we’re very happy to see a ladystar sporting V&R on the red carpet. And it’s a ladystar who needs to be handled like a baby chick, because she’ll run straight into drab, earth-toned  dresses again if we scare her too much.

Kristen Wiig attends the screening of “Girl Most Likely” in New York City in a Viktor & Rolf white silk poly duchesse A-line short dress with a perforated leather bodice paired with a Roger Vivier clutch.

Roger Vivier “Paint Box” Clutch

We give her a lot of credit for picking something like this, even if it is well inside her Amish-plain, neutral-toned wheelhouse. But it’s at least got some cheek and edge to it. And we really like those bright pink/salmon pumps she’s sporting with it. We even like the clutch. But this look is clearly missing something. We think she needed some big, mod jewelry and a more ambitious paint job than that on the face. But she’s not the girl to do that sort of thing, so ultimately, we think this isn’t the dress for her. But this is not listed as a “Girl, That’s Not Your Dress,” because we think with the right styling, it could totally be her dress. But she’s not a risk-taker or someone who takes things past a very limited point, style-wise.

This really seems to be a theme with our celeb style posts lately, but there’s a lot to be said for committing to a look. If you’re going to wear the Rosemary’s Baby dress, then you should commit to interpreting that style for the rest of the look. This is a good effort and the shoes show that someone knew where to go with this look, but it doesn’t quite go as far as it needs to.

disagree! I think she looks adorable. Good for her.

  • Rhonda Shore

This is one of the best looks I’ve ever seen her in!

  • elleg929

She is literally wearing a bib.

    • gabbilevy

… and somehow, it’s working for her.

      • Domo_Konnichiwa

I don’t know. To me the bib elongates her face and emphasizes her chin.

      • anneland

Bib not working for me. I’m not sure it would work on a teen, let alone a more mature woman.

  • decormaven

Oh, dear uncles, from your lips to a stylist’s ears. If the stylist had picked up on the Rosemary Baby’s vibe and accented this look accordingly, it could have been so much better. Here, it’s just ok.

    • Annarosa

What I don’t like is her attitude: she always looks awkward or too shy. There’s nothing really wrong in all her looks, but I always have the feeling that she’d rather be somewhere else. I don’t know why.

      • SylviaFowler

I think she always looks depressed or pissed off.

  • MilaXX

Bland, party of one. Those shoes look horrible with that dress. She always loses it in the shoe department. I think this calls for a strappy sandal.

    • VioletFem

Agreed. At first glance, those shoes looked like bland silly puddy pumps. I think she should have gone for a bolder color (like the green she is sporting on her ring) or a pair of strappy sandals.

It looks better on her than the model, at least. Especially since the model’s dress isn’t hemmed properly(!)

    • MRC210

Agreed, and I’d like to thank Kristen for going with a longer length as well. The model looks like she forgot her pants.

    • barbarienne

Oh, I disagree. (Not about the hem, which is indeed visibly wrong.) I think it looks much better on the model. If nothing else, the bib looks a lot smaller on the model.

    • SonOfSaradoc

First thing I noticed was the hem upgrade on Kristin.

  • frannyprof

Major step in the right direction. Clean, polished, and fashion-forward.

  • ashtangajunkie

I like it, but I would like it more if she had put a little colour on her lips.

  • nannypoo

It looks pretty stiff. Cute, though.

  • marlie

The dress is fine, but I have to disagree with TLo on the shoes. They’re just barely NOT nude, silly-putty pumps. Barely. And I’m over her monochromatic hair and face. Do something with your hair, missy, and put on a lip color other than BLAH every once in a while.

(Sorry, she makes me ranty; she’s always been on my irrational celebrity dislike list.)

    • kimmeister

Yeah, the shoes look very pale peach to me, rather than bright pink or salmon.

  • Handled like a baby chick or dressed like a baby ready for soft foods? Can you tell I don’t like the bib action happening here? Also, the ear rings are horrible. They make her lobes look split in half.

  • mjude

i so love the RoseMary’s baby look. if only…..

  • NMMagpie

The hemline in the PR shot is tragic. Thankfully, it was managed much better on Ms. Wiig.

  • venusvelvet

She looks nice but a perforated leather bib would be too stiff on anyone -it looks like my car roof.

  • Tatiana Luján

I think that dress is ridiculous and nobody should wear it.

    • filmcricket

I could see maaaaaaybe the younger Fanning in it, but otherwise I agree with you.

      • I can’t help but wonder what horrific platform clod hoppers Elle would pair with them.

    • Ms_Flyover

Thank you. I thought perhaps I was the only one thinking it was a boxy white sheath with a lace table runner tacked on.

  • d4divine

She looks good, but a cool piece of jewelry would make it pop and look a bit more sophisticated.

  • conniemd

Oh TLo, you must be eating some farm raised pale salmon, because these pumps are not salmon colored. Real Pacific Northwest salmon is vibrant pink/orange and not washed out. True salmon colored shoes would have rocked that outfit

    • SylviaFowler

100% agreed. Those shoes are NOT salmon-toned. They’re more like… tuna.

  • semirose

Well…its not tragic and if the bib were different somehow it could be cute. But its the right direction and I love that clutch.

  • Diego!

Is she pregnant?? She looks tired, she barely combed and brushed her hair and make up is so so.

  • crash1212

I don’t hate this, but I’m not in love with the sleeve length and how that joins together with the bib placement to make her look ever so…saggy? It’s just not doing much for her shape.

  • She never comes off as a celebrity to me in her RC looks. She always seems more like someone in, like, off broadway or regional theatre, who has to dress up for a fundraiser or something. Smart, pretty, not interested in the celebrity, but doing her job anyway.

  • kolokOlchik

Oh Kristen, why do you doubt your attractiveness? You can be funny and pretty at the same time, and you ARE!

  • maggiemaybe

I am not convinced that any grown woman should wear a tiny dress with an eyelet bib attached. That said, she looks pretty good.

  • Wow. I think this dress is ugly, period, and it does nothing for her. The color, the length, and the stiff bib in the front all look awkward. I love Kristen. Maybe she’ll eventually become chic like Tina Fey did.

  • I have mixed feels about these a-line trapeze dresses – I think they’re so cute on skinny/less-curvy girls, and then I hate them for looking so terribly boxy and unflattering on busty, hippy, big-butted me. I’m jealous!

  • omg_dora

The dress has no shape on her but she still looks great. I think it’s the color of the fabric combined with her makeup or something — her face is glowing.

  • The main body of this dress is beautiful – the fabric practically glistens. Don’t know if I can say the same for the panty-liner pad stuck to her collar, though.

    • Rika

Oh, no, it DOES look like a panty-liner! And now I can’t un-see it.

  • f_yeah_marie

The design of the clutch reminds me of a candy bar. Mmm, chocolate… Also, I’m not feeling her hair.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

The clutch is shaped like the Sky Bar candy bar. It had four sections, each contained a different flavored creamy filling, all covered in milk chocolate.

  • barbarienne

I would order a complete ban on all bib-like features of clothes intended for adults, but on the model the bib area looks smaller, which makes it cute and mod. Ms. Wiig is 5’5″ (according to imdb), which I guess deviates enough from the dimensions of a professional model to make this dress go all disproportionate.

  • susan6

It’s a little too twee for her. Hand it off to Kiernan Shipka.

  • alyce1213

Her hair is abysmal, her makeup is lacking, the dress is marginally okay (pantyliner bib), the shoes are not really bright pink/salmon, and the clutch doesn’t really suit the outfit. I think she’s not quite stepping it up. And this is HER movie, right?

  • Dan_In_NYC

She has SO MUCH raw material to work with (good hair, thin, good proportions, pretty, personality in spades). I has a major sad that she can’t more consistently deliver a Wow look.

I am holding out hope that she will transition, like Tina Fey before her, and Kathy Griffin before that, into a funny lady who can serve some fashion.

  • judybrowni

A dress with a built-in bib is never a good idea past toddler age, in my opinion.

Yeah, I get the ’60s vibe, even if I was wearing something similar in 1964, it’s cause I was a tween.

  • Trisha26

If this is where fashion’s going I’m not buying a ticket. It’s a shapeless sack with a lobster bib. At least her stylist pressed the hem, unlike on the model.

  • Michelle Wilson

    I think she looks adorable.

  • Sonja Brisson

I can’t believe tlo likes this. Every bit of it is wrong. She’s lovely and could look fab. A woman this hip and funny must have her fashion gays! Where are they? She needs you! Gee, even the darts are wrong.

  • PeaceBang

Hate the dress, love the woman wearing it.

  • bertkeeter

Would work on a waif aka “Mia Farrow” back in the day! She’s not skinny or lanky enough for this look.

  • demidaemon

All I see is a futuristic waitress’ uniform. Like the Jetsons kind of futuristic. Which, while cheeky, does not work for me at all

  • putacorkinit

I agree. A nice splash of red on those lips, not too much, not too little, and then she’s show ready.

  • Nimith

It’s a bloody great bib on a white smock! Mental patient couture?

  • Lesley

i think she looks adorable! i tend to believe less is more with jewelry, so i think some heavy jewels could have been overkill with this. one thing i am dying over are those heels. love the color!

  • Watts

60s bridesmaid dress with a baby bib tacked on. Blech.

Also, the hem in the picture with the model looks terrible.

  • another_laura

Sorry, this is not working for me.
